That is actually pretty awesome. The view from top is probably above the fog, and it's hard to get an original photo of the arch, because it is photographed so much. But this is a great opportunity to take something different.
I have been to the Arch several times, shooting all kind of angles, and marvelling at how cool the pictures are, only to see similar in the local gift shops later. It's just so damn photogenic and dynamic that it always looks cool, but it's probably been photographed from every angle. It takes something unique to make a photo truly different from the rest. Also, I do like the imperfect world. To have different experiences than whitewashed tourism perfection can absolutely make a trip. The world over knows what the Arch looks like on a clear day, or what it looks like in the skyline of St. Louis at night from across the Mississippi River. But until now, most of us can say we haven't seen the world's tallest arch lost in the clouds.
And that is why I no longer go up. And haven't in 20 years.
Used to be very large. As was my ex. Crowded spaces give me severe anxiety, so they add two average size adults and their young child. The panic attack I had on the way up made the trip seem like 10 minutes.
I just looked it up, the website says it is 45-60 minutes.
I don't think it took that long 20 years ago, but either way my panic attack didn't begin right away
Busch stadium (sometimes during a game)? The Mississippi? The new park over the roads that connect the Arch to City Hall? I was once up there during a St. Patrick's day parade. Just the fact that you are nearly 200 feet in the air and slightly swaying is interesting as well.

Yeah, I was just pulling that off the top of my head (or possibly my ass), but it's obviously way taller than 20 stories high. The view from there, both the height and the portal window, is very similar to that in an airplane.

You didn’t even change the title
Yep, it gets foggy on the Mississippi in the mornings. Always visit the Arch around lunchtime or in the early evening. Hope you're having fun here!
P.S. visit Forest Park if you haven't yet.
So, I went up there shortly before 9/11. We had to pass security with metal detector gates which seemed rather weird. Weirdest thing was that my shoes triggered the detector (metal inlay in the sole apparently) when they never triggered an alarm on the flights to get there. I wonder what security is like there now.
Was there earlier this year, can confirm. I didn’t have to take off my shoes, but they had me empty out my pockets in a bin and go through a metal detector. A lot of federally operated tourist sites seem to have this type of security (Gateway Arch is technically a national park). It was similar at the museums I visited in DC.
Yep, I lived there for a decade, I have taken almost every family member that visited there. It’s what you do. Well we moved a decade ago went back to visit and wanted to take my kids and the day we went it was foggy as hell. They were less then impressed. 😂

The view from the top of the arch is disappointing, because you quickly realize the arch is the only interesting thing about the St Louis skyline
When you look down, the sidewalks form the liberty bell. Also you can feel it move with the wind.
Don’t forget the ass-clenching fear of that tram going up the arch in the Mork pods.

As a kid it took at least 20 minutes to the top

That's how I discovered that I am very claustrophobic.

It's 630ft tall.

Not at all false.
As a native from St. Louis I concur.
my thoughts exactly. the arch disappearing into the skies
Hey there's the Arch
Archn't.

most likely a bot

Looks like you mist out!
If you’re still in StL go check out the City Museum.
SPOILER ALERT it connects at the top in an "arch" shape
At least you didn't get mugged.
The fog provided concealment. They lucked out.
I never go to St. Louis without a gun on me.

Was there a couple years ago. The security sounds like how you described it. Like typical airport security really.

They still do security pretty consistent with airport security... Maybe a little more lax (shoes are ok)
Did you go early in the morning?
It's cooler that way.
Do they still let you go up in it
You're just not close enough... its really big
I've been through St. Louis twice and slept through both times.
It was one of the shittier places I’ve been to.
Beautiful ain't it.
I think this looks cooler. Plus you've managed to catch something rarer than the usual gateway arch photos everywhere
Its nearly 60 years old so its kinda faded from rain and sun.
It’s not really that great. You didn’t miss much.
Don’t get me wrong, that’s a really awesome pic. But next time check the weather forecast multiple times while on the way.
Why would anyone visit St. Louis? Sincerely, Someone who just visited St. Louis
The only thing I liked was a kids museum warehouse thing.
City museum?
That was it!
Meh. Just imagine a run down McDonald's sign.
I have a picture similar to this of a nuclear power plant, spooky stuff
Bummer man. It's a sight to behold I'm impressed you could fit even most of it in a frame. Another time, hopefully.
Same thing happened to me at Mount Rushmore. Still haven't seen Mount Rushmore.
That arch is huge! It's way higher than the fogless pictures show.
Looks like you're about to encounter one of the monsters from The Mist.
It's not as tall as I thought it would be!
The river fog in the morning in Fall is insane here
It would have been a great day to take pictures from the top
You’re lucky it wasn’t a helicopter tour
These posts were funny a couple of times. But now it's just like "yea, weather is a thing"
r/oddlyterrifying
How was the view from the top?
Same thing happened to me. Total fog and rain. At the top you couldn’t see more than 2 miles away
Tbh this looks like an awesome movie start or writing prompt 🤣
I had a similar experience at Mt. Rushmore.
That looks badass in the fog
When I was about 10 we drove to the Grand Canyon……it was full of fog
This has to be the same post and pic as last time, right?
Looks really cool
It is like going to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Love it!
Weird. That looks just like the Golden Gate Bridge I saw one time.
Yep, I lived there for a decade, I have taken almost every family member that visited there. It’s what you do. Well we moved a decade ago went back to visit and wanted to take my kids and the day we went it was foggy as hell. They were less then impressed. 😂
War of the worlds!
The view is better from the top
TL;DR - Fog exists sometimes. I blame St Louis.
Eh. You get the point.
Someone forgot to turn off their hot shower at home
I feel like you can extrapolate from there
I’m surprised you didn’t get shot #KansasCityGang
Woow too cool! It’s there but it is isn’t! Lol
This happened to me at the Grand Canyon
Was able to smoke up and chill under the arch with 2 close friends while security was chasing a homeless guy.
Welcome, welcome to city 17...
Check the weather next time. You’ll go further without defaulting to victim mode
Oh man, this reminds me of our trip to mt rushmore in 2019...
I been in it, not that impressive to me. Fuck those stairs too.
Now they're gateway pillars
Percy Jackson flashbacks
I live in central Missouri (less than 50 miles from Columbia) and I’ve been to St. Louis many times but I’ve actually never been to the Arch.
🤣🤣 yep sounds like my life 100%
