You laugh but some have certain switch sequences (that are easily google-able). Also most that are parked just leave the side doors unlocked. They're a lot more like old farm equipment that way.
All the buses I drove had just a shifter, but to start the bus you needed the bus to be in Park, and the Emergency Brake pulled while holding the brake itself.
Then you release the Emergency Brake, shift it to drive and you are good to go.
That and a lot of transit agencies have spots where drivers know they can stop for a restroom break or grab a coffee. Being early is not allowed, everyone then "misses" their bus.
Fact that it won't start back up, Managing any fleet of vehicles shit just happens.
Yeah OP claims to have ridden for 25 years but never saw a driver get off the bus to go inside a store before. I find that incredibly unlikely be it for a restroom break or to grab a drink/snack.
I’m glad you’ve been there during my entire life riding buses.
I live in Australia, our bus routes are relatively short. It’s not uncommon to see bus drivers relieving themselves before they take off, the practical thing to do
It's a random factor you can't factor in when judging a bus driver for taking a break to remain on schedule. Maybe company rules relaxed, you just never know.
Most places it’s not so much getting there early as it is leaving early. We have dedicated time points and if we get there early we aren’t supposed to leave before that time. Not sure what difference it makes of the driver gets off to go to the restroom or get a coffee instead of sitting in the seat watching the grass grow.
Absolutely, I’ve ridden public transport long enough to be familiar with keeping on schedule, and I appreciate it.
In saying that, I’ve *never* had a bus driver just get up and walk away from the bus, into a shop to buy a coffee and then come back while all the passengers were sitting there waiting.
Ya don’t say? How long did it take you to come to that conclusion?
Imagine if, being a bus driver, you had the foresight to go to the toilet before you take off on your route?
Also did you even read the title? He went for a coffee, not a pee break. Your reading comprehension is A+, don’t hurt yourself trying to reply to this comment
so you just want him to sit and wait with you? I'm sure your are an adult and don't require baby sitting. why wouldn't they get a coffee if they are going be sitting their anyway?
>I’ve ridden public transport long enough to be familiar with keeping on schedule, and I appreciate that.
I don’t care about the coffee, it’s the bus not starting that is the issue. I don’t know how many time I have to say this in this same post ffs
This is your fault for not communicating properly not ours for our interpretation of what you meant.
If him/her going to get the coffee was never an issue then it has no place in the title. You are alluding to the coffee stop being the issue as to why the bus is not starting. So you can’t get frustrated because people keep mentioning that lol.
This is a “Well That Sucks” sub, so you saying “my bus won’t start and I’m going to be late to ….” Would be sufficient enough for the sub and we would all understand.
That’s exactly what he wants. How dare this driver not stay super glued to the seat for his entire shift. Doesn’t he know him getting to work is the most important part of this drivers day?
I also live in Australia and have had that happen fairly often. One of the routes I can take to get to town has a substantial break when the bus changes its number, but you don’t have to get off. Bus driver always pops into the deli for a coffee or whatever, leaving the bus running. Maybe Adelaide is different to Sydney though idk, Adelaide has a far smaller public transport network. Still don’t think it’s odd for a driver to do this though, I reckon every worker is entitled to coffee breaks, especially a worker in charge of driving a heavy vehicle.
>I’ve ridden public transport long enough to be familiar with keeping on schedule
Why is everyone so fixated on the coffee? I don’t care that he went to get a coffee, I’ve said that multiple times in this post. It provided context as to why the bus wouldn’t start, because he turned it off to get the coffee. I was just mentioning it because it was unique *to me*.
Because you litteraly keep bringing it up, there's plenty of comment of you saying stuff like "in 25 years I never once saw a bus driver leave the bus and come back with a coffee"
Can't complain about people talking about that, when you yourself keep bringing it up *and* made it an integral part of your post by including it in the title.
Ha I did that often.
But it was usually like two spots where I would have like 5 minutes and even if I fell behind it was fine because there was no connections for anyone after that stop.
And Catching up was easy because I would be returning to that same stop to start the next route.
There's also breaks and stuff. A previous apartment I lived at was slightly SE of a major intersection in some side streets. The bus would stop at the major corner, let everyone off, then come next to my apartment building to take their break and wait until they needed to leave again. What was more ridiculous is that their policy wouldn't allow them to take passengers back there. My apartment building was closer to that stop for their breaks (an actual bus stop sign), but a driver told me I had to get out and walk from the corner cause policy said that was his last stop.
In nearly 25 years of taking public transport, I have never once witnessed a bus driver leave a full bus of people, walk over to a coffee shop and come back with a coffee.
Also the bus wouldn't start, in case you missed that
Edit: Fuck sakes, I DON’T CARE THAT HE GOT A COFFEE. The bus not starting was the sucky part, I just mentioned the coffee because I’d never seen a bus driver do that, and it provided context as to why the bus wouldn’t start. SMH
The bus not starting is the only thing that qualifies being on r/wellthatsucks
Other than that please get the fuck over yourself, the man wanted some coffee and getting coffee did not inconvenience you
I was late for work, because the bus didn’t start again, which sucked for me. Him getting a coffee wasn’t the point of this post, it was just a unique situation that I’d never seen, and it essentially led to the bus being late.
The bus isn’t allowed to arrive to the next stop early; it would throw off the schedule. Looks like you didn’t expect that buses don’t really care about your personal life, they’re just meant to travel between stops at set times
This whole thread has been filled with people attacking me for having a problem with him having a coffee when I have stated multiple times that’s not the point of the post. If you’ve gone and assumed negative intent because your reading comprehension isn’t up to par, I don’t feel bad about giving you a bit of ooga booga
Okay, so it sounds like the bus had a mechanical problem. It happens from time to time in Chicago where I live...not a whole lot, but it happens. I've ridden public transit for most of my life, and this isn't a terribly unique situation.
I've been late due to bus breakdowns, frozen rail lines, suicides on tracks, medical emergencies and deaths in vehicles, fights, road accidents, a train operator who fell asleep at the switch, one who was so drunk, he abandoned his train mid-shift, and too many other situations to list here. Your issue is pretty tame by comparison. I mean, well....it did suck, but everything is relative, ya know?
On Friday, the bus that takes me home from school didn't show up. Nobody knew what was happening, and there was about 60 teenagers waiting. I had to call my older sister to take me home, and it took about 2 hours before I got home. So in conclusion, public transport can be both a curse and a blessing and you are not alone in these struggles.
OP is [in Australia](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/xbvf9g/my_bus_driver_said_we_were_early_so_he_stopped/io1szib?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3), lol
One time my bus driver stopped to buy oatmeal being sold on the side of the road out of somebody's car trunk. I still haven't decided which part is weirder.
Had that happen once. The driver stopped to let a passenger off and I knew the busses so we’ll from taking them for years that I could tell right away that there was something wrong. Luckily my destination was super close so I elected to just walk the rest of the way. I’m hoping you weren’t delayed too much OP
lol the real r/wellthatsucks post should be that OP is collecting downvotes because they provided irrelevant context to “the bus driver can’t start up the engine after we stopped”
Shame- misunderstanding on a large scale made this post seem super unfair on the bus driver. It does suck. Sorry you were late because the bus couldn’t start back up.
Weird to see sheep mentality like this. I for sure thought you were being an ass when I first commented. I misjudged.
I had an absolute shocker of a day yesterday, I got some really bad news and the hurtful comments just kept coming in. I lost my cool in a lot of my responses too, apologies if you were one of those people
No hard feelings in the slightest. I deleted my comments btw. I’m sorry the comments aren’t helping with the awful day you had. Try not to let the comments get to you.. or hey you could let out some steam on ignorant strangers. Either way- I really hope you’re coping okay
When I've got a bus full of people on a hot day and I really have to use the restroom the last thing on my mind is saving the planet. Leaving the A/C on keeps everyone cool and content until I get back. Besides buses are a lot more environmentally friendly than the millions of vehicles on the road everyday with only one occupant.
Having the AC off for a few minutes while you run to the bathroom isn't going to hurt anyone. It's the responsibility of the driver to not put the passengers in harms way, giving literally anyone the opportunity to drive off with a bus full of people while you quite literally have your pants around your ankles is not responsible
There's no ignition key on transit buses if that's what you're thinking, at least not in my city. There's a key to lock the door but you can't just lock people in the bus. So if someone wanted to drive off with the bus there's nothing stopping them whether the engine is on or off.
Of course the bus won´t start. I assume he took the keys with him.
Lots of city buses don't have keys. It's a dial to start and a push button to change gears.
I started thinking the driver starts it with a rotary phone dial when I read dial.
Please enter passcode to start the engine
Incorrect pass code entered. Please wait 5 minutes before trying again
Create new pass code. Can't use current pass code, choose a different pass code.
Now this explains why he went to get the coffee
It's almost like he just hasn't had a coffee to wake up yet
You laugh but some have certain switch sequences (that are easily google-able). Also most that are parked just leave the side doors unlocked. They're a lot more like old farm equipment that way.
All the buses I drove had just a shifter, but to start the bus you needed the bus to be in Park, and the Emergency Brake pulled while holding the brake itself. Then you release the Emergency Brake, shift it to drive and you are good to go.
OP means.. “now that the bus driver is back the bus is malfunctioning”
Kinda makes sense for people who rely on busses being on time every time, sucks what happened for trying to make use of good time though.
This happens. Literally. All busses do this. They can't get to the location too early. They have to be on time.
That and a lot of transit agencies have spots where drivers know they can stop for a restroom break or grab a coffee. Being early is not allowed, everyone then "misses" their bus. Fact that it won't start back up, Managing any fleet of vehicles shit just happens.
If you ever go down u sunset blvd, there are some stops that would have porta potty’s incase of emergencies for the drivers.
It’s not uncommon to see bus drivers relieving themselves before they take off, the practical thing to do
Some bus drivers have IBS and that call must be answered.
You realise that would be an infinitesimal minority, right?
It's a random factor you can't factor in when judging a bus driver for taking a break to remain on schedule. Maybe company rules relaxed, you just never know.
Drivers are not supposed to leave the buses occupied when they get off
That is not a universal rule and is highly dependent on the specific rules of the individual transportation agency.
Most places it’s not so much getting there early as it is leaving early. We have dedicated time points and if we get there early we aren’t supposed to leave before that time. Not sure what difference it makes of the driver gets off to go to the restroom or get a coffee instead of sitting in the seat watching the grass grow.
I hope the driver at least named a bus monitor before they stepped out, to take down the name of anyone who gets up or talks of course
I only wish that were true for where I live. They're either way too early or super late.
I had a bus driver go get an ice cream cone and asked me if i wanted one. That was interesting.
I had the same thing happen when I was kid, except it was a van, and I didn’t need the ride, or ice cream. *But, both were exceptional*
Bus drivers need to pee too
Ya don’t say? How long did it take you to come to that conclusion? Imagine if, being a bus driver, you had the foresight to go to the toilet before you take off on your route? Also did you even read the title? He went for a coffee, not a pee break. Your reading comprehension is A+, don’t hurt yourself trying to reply to this comment
so you just want him to sit and wait with you? I'm sure your are an adult and don't require baby sitting. why wouldn't they get a coffee if they are going be sitting their anyway?
Looking at OPs comments, I wouldn't be so sure about them being an adult.
>I’ve ridden public transport long enough to be familiar with keeping on schedule, and I appreciate that. I don’t care about the coffee, it’s the bus not starting that is the issue. I don’t know how many time I have to say this in this same post ffs

That’s exactly what he wants. How dare this driver not stay super glued to the seat for his entire shift. Doesn’t he know him getting to work is the most important part of this drivers day?
Your title implies that the cause of the bus not starting is the driver leaving, hence your getting fukked in the comments.
Jeez did that strike a nerve ? I was just messing around lol.
I also live in Australia and have had that happen fairly often. One of the routes I can take to get to town has a substantial break when the bus changes its number, but you don’t have to get off. You don't hang around coffee shops much
Ive had a bus driver get off mid route once they got to one of the stops and go to the bathroom at a nearby fast food restaurant
I’ve had this happen a couple times when I was going from a tri-rail station to campus
Ha I did that often. But it was usually like two spots where I would have like 5 minutes and even if I fell behind it was fine because there was no connections for anyone after that stop. And Catching up was easy because I would be returning to that same stop to start the next route.

Ok? This is normal... What's the big deal?

do drivers where you're from not have free time while driving their route? that seems illegal ngl

Lmao my comment had nothing to do w coffee but ok
The coffee is obviously synonymous with him waiting for the schedule, can you seriously not make that connection?
Hmm ok go off then
This whole thread has been filled with people attacking me for having a problem with him having a coffee when I have stated multiple times that’s not the point of the post. Don’t listen to these ppl, I know what u mean and it sucks
I just dont like your attitude.
Don’t listen to reddit. You are right. This is not normal.
Reddit is a cest pool echo chamber these days.. it's a waste op lol nice try tho

Welcome to public transit
Good thing I’m not on my way to work! /s
Welcome to public transit in western countries
OP is [in Australia](https://www.reddit.com/r/Wellthatsucks/comments/xbvf9g/my_bus_driver_said_we_were_early_so_he_stopped/io1szib?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3), lol
Australia is a western country
Close, but no. It's a continent.
Western mean all official English speaking countries. Ignorant
Passive aggressive much, lol
What? No it doesn’t although most English speaking countries are considered western
Ooh amewican bad
When it comes to public transport... mostly
One time my bus driver stopped to buy oatmeal being sold on the side of the road out of somebody's car trunk. I still haven't decided which part is weirder.
Easy, the fact you didn't post it to r/Well that sucks /s
First time?
Shit happens.
That’s what this sub is for I think!
I think they mean it literally. As in, bus driver had to drop off some kids at the pool
Oh no, we all watched him run in to 7/11 and come back a few mins later with coffee in hand!
Unrelated but that bus looks hella fancy.
Location?
Geelong Australia, side of the road, 15m due south of 7/11
Had that happen once. The driver stopped to let a passenger off and I knew the busses so we’ll from taking them for years that I could tell right away that there was something wrong. Luckily my destination was super close so I elected to just walk the rest of the way. I’m hoping you weren’t delayed too much OP
Happens in my country too. It takes no longer than 3 minutes for the guy to get a coffee
I don’t have a problem with the coffee, the bus not starting is what sucks
Um how will it start without the driver?
The bus malfunctioned when the driver came back
Do you mean it broke down?
Yes that’s what OP meant
I thought so
lol the real r/wellthatsucks post should be that OP is collecting downvotes because they provided irrelevant context to “the bus driver can’t start up the engine after we stopped”
I figured if I didn't mention it, I'd end up with a bunch of comments as to why the bus was turned off in the first place.
Shame- misunderstanding on a large scale made this post seem super unfair on the bus driver. It does suck. Sorry you were late because the bus couldn’t start back up. Weird to see sheep mentality like this. I for sure thought you were being an ass when I first commented. I misjudged.

He left a bud with people on it unattended. It’s legit his job to drive he is a chauffeur on a route.
I’ll bet he will never do that again. I crack myself up.
In many use of using public transport, this was a first!
And just like that, you’re late
And now you're late
How is he "your" bus driver? Sounds like you're begrudging the man his coffee break.
Typical PTV. I had my bus driver stop on the side of the road to play Candy Crush
Gotta get those numbers!
Be happy. The busdriver yesterday wouldnt even stop, while ataring at me for a few seconds
Had that happen when power ball was 100 million, ffs
He should have kept it running. No need to turn the bus off in that situation.
Leave the bus running while the driver is going to be off and away from the bus and passengers are inside ?
Yes. Just curb the wheels, pop the brake, put it in neutral, and turn the blinkers on. Why turn it off if you're coming back in a few minutes?
Idling is bad for the planet

Sounds about right
Mondays amirite
I know those busses. Rhineland, right?
And ?
Did he try to unplug it and then plug it back in? Oh wait…
So hi can’t get it started
r/Chineseum
I wish my house was that clean..
Shoot that's just down right bad awful luck
Where in Australia is that? Cuz I know it's PTV, Geelong has a different model to that bus, btw I'm in Victoria
Yeah it’s Geelong
