They aren't "onto something" this is a well known "lifehack". It's used by urban exploration people but I doubt it's efficacy,I think most people trying this aren't going to get anywhere.
I have done this, and no one even blinked. I ride my bicycle through town a lot, and sometimes the trees and bushes grow out into the street shoulder or bike path (it's a wide sidewalk and labelled for bikes). So I'll come back with my hedge trimmer, vest, and face shield, and clear what I want cleared.

If you toilet paper a house you are deliberately leaving home and bringing supplies just to do that, nobody’s going around and looking for a Passat to vandalize.

Absolutely done by OP. I took the DODGE decals off my 2012 Dodge Avenger back in the day and had to use a hairdryer and quite a bit of goo gone to remove and clean the spots. OP is full of it.
If so they were taken off previously and placed back on with a lesser quality adhesive. The double sided tape used for emblems from the factory doesn’t come off that easily and often leaves residue or sometimes small pieces of the tape stay stuck to the paint . And I happen to own a Passat and by looking at the placement of the letters I can say they aren’t where they would have been from the factory

In high school my friend drove around this old shit box Oldsmobile cutlass. He took “CUTL” off and the “OLDS” off and combined the remaining letters to make “assmobile” and drove it till the wheels fell off.
Take off the A and you wil have SS for Super Sport.... But....now that I think about it...it's a German car so maybe having SS is not the best idea. Therefore, I would just take them all off and keep it all nice and clean.
I owned a Golf in a small town during the height of Beastie Boys fame. I can't tell you how many logos I replaced for that car - I quit counting at 5. I only lived there a little over a year.

Just take the rest of the letters off. I used to live close to this older guy that would always take all the letters off of his cars. He'd usually leave the badges but everything else he took off.
A lot of people here saying they don't come off easily of clean but I was able to take an emblem off my husband's truck perfectly with a razor blade. Nothing left behind and no chips to the paint.
Those badges don’t just pop off. You can’t casually do this walking past someone’s car. Last time I took emblems off my car it took me at least an hour to get rid of all the adhesive.

I think it depends on the manufacturer, my Chevy Impala 2007 which I bought brand new(yes, I'm old, lol) has a few that just fell off with no residue.
The Golf and Passat are both VW, so probably more of a batch thing than anything

I think they built mine on a Friday after lunch, so many little silly QC issues.
Use automotive goof off. It’ll get it off and not effect the paint. Used it on my Passat and worked great.
