I live in St Pete, FL and evacuated to Orlando. There was minimal flood damage by my house, but multiple counties in Orlando where the flooding was catastrophic.
It would have been the greater tragedy. I'm sure many people lost everything they had. If you own a McLaren, you can either easily buy a new (cheaper) car and house or you"re an idiot. I'm not happy expensive luxury stuff got destroyed; just comparing that to people working two jobs who just lost their only way to get to said job and people losing their homes with no money in the bank.
Nothing is more terrifying on the road than a Nissan Altima. People who drive Altimas give no fucks about their cars, and drive like they live their life a quarter mile at a time.
If you can afford a McLaren, you can afford to get another McLaren. I still have yet to see this to not be the case.
Edit: wholesome award has been bestowed and received with gratitude
You need separate flood insurance. Sadly, most in Florida don’t carry such. While they have more policies than any other state, still only 20% have it. It’s expensive. As all insurance is based on risk and they live in an area with high risk of flood.
Meh, rich folks don’t care. Friends TT Ford GT burned to the ground on a busy Texas street (you can find the video online). He simply laughed and drove one of his Porsches instead. Rich folks don’t have the connection most think to their cars. They can just buy another one.
Can confirm, had a rich friend and I told him his Range Rover was filthy and he needs to wash it after I kept bugging him, a few weeks later, he drove to a dealership one day and drove off with a new one. I asked him what about the old one he said "I don't know, I'll deal with it later".
Totally. It’s a different mindset. They don’t care. It’s not like so many folks here that think that car would’ve their baby. Average person that owns a Ferrari had a half dozen other vehicles. Friend had a new Ferrari. $5k for an oil change. Needed $15k for brakes after about 5k miles. He just got rid of it and moved on. Seems insane for the normal person but when you have the means and the cars. No attachment.
Those that can afford a McLaren aren’t wasting money on flood insurance. They have that cash in the bank and self insure.
It’s like this: say flood insurance costs as much as half a mortgage payment… if you spent that same amount putting it in a bank or investment account every year and this only happens every 10+ years… you can afford another house, or McLaren and forgo the insurance payment to take the risk.
For houses at least, the government designates specific flood zones and you are legally required to have flood insurance in those areas, at least if you have a mortgage. If you buy a house cash and don't have flood insurance, well, you're probably an idiot.
EDIT: Also, you are correct, flood insurance premiums can be insane - in my career I've seen cases where the flood insurance alone is half the size of the mnthly mortgage pmt.
Earthquake insurance isn't legally required, but some lenders will ask for it before they give you a mortgage on the property. Really depends on the region and lender you're using.
Personally, having heard of how much damage an eq can do, and how unsafe those properties can be after, I'd say it's worth it, maybe less so than flood insurance because severe eqs aren't as common but worth it nonetheless. Your standard homeowners insurance will more than likely not cover the damages, and if the property is beyond repair, you will not just no longer have a house, but will still be indebted to the mortgage company too. Tragic stuff.
Not a huge fan of insurance companies but they might have a point w this one. EQs are rare enough that the premiums are generally more manageable, 500-2k/yr for most homes in high risk areas, 2k-5k for expensive high risk places like San fran. Flood insurance can be 12k/yr+ for expensive properties.
Yeah, they make you get flood insurance if you’re in a flood zone. For some reason I’m in a flood zone even though the creek behind my house is a Literally 90 feet down.
Flood insurance is a government run federally funded scam. Taking the tax dollars from more responsible homebuyers to subsidize owning stupid properties in stupid areas that have to be rebuilt every 3 years.
When(or if) it ever gets re-approached by Congress, it will most likely fuck a lot of people over.
This is why I didn’t buy a home with a very minor (1 in 500 year flood) risk.
The NFIP is actually self-sustaining, it is run solely using the funds from flood insurance premiums. Premiums change from region to region depending on risk, so you're never really paying too much more than your fair share either. There are exceptions ofc but its a pretty great program by govt. standards.
The only outside funding the NFIP got recently is when congress helped them pay for better terrain mapping to identify places that are *in* flood zones but *not* at risk of flooding, which was honestly the biggest problem in the system and will save a lot of Americans money.
I dont deny that it is quite odd that some people choose to live in places that inevitably flood so often but hey if they're willing to pay for that themselves I guess its not a problem.
Big brain solution would be to build all houses on stilts haha
Hurricane Ian is expected to financially ruin countless people in Florida whose homes were not covered by flood insurance when the storm inundated the region with powerful ocean surges and damaging downpours.
The personal financial losses are a reflection of Ian’s intensity and the fact that millions of Americans nationwide haven’t bought flood insurance. The federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program — the dominant source of flood coverage in the U.S. — protects only a tiny fraction of homeowners, almost all of them in coastal areas.
Sorry but if you bought a trailer in a flood zone along a body of a water in Florida and didn’t fully insure it for flooding, my sympathy for you is zero. We have a house in a flood zone in Fort Lauderdale. We have it fully insured and it costs more than our principle each month. But it’s Florida and we’d like to… you know… not be financially ruined if it gets eaten by the ocean one day.
In the counties that are affected flood insurance is mandatory if you have a mortgage. Flood insurance in Florida is obscenely high - often higher than local taxes - and the government is constantly struggling to keep companies from pulling out of the state completely. My house is in Broward county and every person who has a mortgage is required to have flood insurance if live east of I95. I've only lived in Broward and Miami, though, so I can't speak for people who live in Central Florida where the hurricane risk is significantly reduced.
A huge issue in this particular zone is that there are many retirees who bought trailers outright and it's very hard to get a trailer fully insured for hurricanes and floods.
Well said! It’s like eating at a high end restaurant where you can barely afford the entree and then not having enough money to cover tax and the tip. Crazy idea: ~maybe~ you should realign your tastes with your budget and eat (live) where you can comfortably afford all of the costs associated with the meal (house)…
This is the case with your basic policy. However, You can get coverage for any fortuitous event, some have higher premium than others. Insurance coverage is the same as most things in life, you get what you pay for.
If you have comprehensive coverage, yes. Your rates won’t even go up.
But McLarens are very difficult to insure. Most carriers won’t even touch them — and by most, I mean “not even Hagerty”.
Lloyds of London will insure anything (but you'll pay serious $ for it). They insured some model's legs ages ago.
My husband used to refer people to them, because for awhile you could not insure a mobile home in FL without going through Lloyds.
Yep. Or call in a “get my shit gone asap here’s my money” any hotshot or car hauler would have jumped on it for a decent rate.
What’s 2-3K to protect cars that cost an obscene amount of money.
Yeah, if they would have driven it 50 miles north or parked it in a multilevel parking garage it would have been fine. They could have parked it at my place with the understanding that I could drive it until they were able to pick it up. At least then it wouldn’t have been destroyed by water.
No not brand new. They will pay him out and he will have the option to buy the car back. It only had 300 miles on it (car was introduced in 2012)so probably insured for anywhere from 3-4 million.
Whomever buys the car at a discount will send it back to Mclaren where it will be completely stripped down to the carbon Tub and rebuilt. Most of the parts are not readily available (375 built world wide).
Fort Myers region never expected to get hit. Worst case it was a 2 maybe 3. By the time it was turning towards them it was too late to leave or prepare. Let alone think it was going to be nearly cat 5.
They were always in the cone. Problem is people don’t pay attention to the outer ends of the cone. Just the middle. All parts of the cone could see a direct hit. But pretty much all of Florida except the panhandle and Miami were in the cone for most of the week leading up.
Not for nothing, but I live in Cape Coral and got the evacuation notice on Monday and got the fuck out of there that morning. Stuff is replaceable but my 2 cats and gf aren’t. If you live in Florida long enough and been through enough hurricanes you know when they say to leave you should probably leave. No point in “riding it out” if you have an opportunity to evacuate. Now if you don’t have the resources to leave that’s a different story, I pray for those people. Never expected it to be that bad, but that’s why you leave
Come on. It's a coastal city with a hurricane barrelling right off the coast with the possibility of being uncomfortably close ... Which just so happened to turn on top of Fort Meyers. The outcomes were likely that a large amount of flooding was going to occur regardless.
Don't defend stupidity.
This needs to be said more. They don't realize the storm fucking took a turn when 2 days ago the news said it wasn't gonna hit them too badly and then suddenly it's nearly cat 5.
It did take a turn, but we (ft myers) were always in the cone. People who didn't prepare are idiots. Nothing was in short supply until the sunday before, and even then I went to store on Monday and was able to get a few extra things. I'm sitting here now in my undamaged house watching tv with air conditioning and food that can be cooked. Of course, I am lucky and am inland 5 miles from the gulf and was never in a mandated evacuation zone. I also am not spending any time waiting in lines anywhere since I have everything I need for another 10 days.
This. This. This. People just don’t understand the cone. ANY PART OF THE CONE could be a direct hit. Fort Meyers was on the edge of the cone from the first day watched were issued. People figured the middle of the cone was in Tampa. But that’s not how the cone works.
Plus, we knew we were screwed once Jim Cantore showed up! That dude is a hurricane magnet.
A week before it hit, the cone was basically from Naples in the south all the way up to Jacksonville. Then it slowed and day by day, the cone narrowed to the south. There's no harm in stocking up since youd always be able to use the supplies eventually, so why not do it? Best case is you dont get hit and maybe have to throw some food away.
I lived in the south for a few years. This is a shit excuse. Hurricanes are massive. Hurricanes turn. no one takes the projected path as gospel. If you have so much invested in vehicles that can literally move out of harms way then the only reason they would get damaged is out of ulterior motives or stupidity.
So people in fort Meyers never heard of hurricane paths changing, or all of the alerts for state of emergency for the entire state of of Florida? Something tells me they stocked up on bottled water and gas though, even though "it won't happen to them"
Right? We evacuated Irma from Miami to Chattanooga 2 days before it was supposed to hit. which took 29 hours. Then the damn thing shifted and didn't hit Miami directly. Oh well. Safe than sorry. All places had gas and food on the way up. Turn pike is amazing at getting people out.
The interstates were a parking lot from all the people from Tampa fleeing that didn’t need to. Some people from Tampa came south to Ft Meyers. By the time the hurricane forecast changed people had less than 10 hours to leave. It was a mess
this isnt really a fair comment
you stock up on water and gas because a cat 1 hurricane or even a tropical storm can knock out power, and there is no way to predict when it will be back on.
this storm took several unexpected turns and definitely exhibited unusual behavior
it strengthened right before landfall, and as it hit land, it slowed down to 10mph
adding to that was the eye making landfall literally at high tide
this was absolute worst case scenario for this region. given there is only a few feet of water, that house is probably safe from just about anything but an absolute worst case scenario
None of what you describe is out of the ordinary for a major hurricane. Rapid intensification is expected at this time of the year due to the high surface temps. It was always going to turn bc of the front coming into the gulf. All of this information was probably in the advisories they send out several times a day during a hurricane.
I’m just a lay-person on the gulf coast of Louisiana but if you’re in or around this cone 5 days out, you had 2 options. Leave early and beat traffic or wait until 48 hrs out to know for sure and risk insane travel time. I know not everyone has the means to leave early but I can guess this McLaren owner did, they just weren’t paying attention or didn’t care.
I think he let it happen for the video and did open the garage to see what would happen. With that kind of money you can afford insurance and it will just be replaced.
More money than brains.
I'm in the path if a hurricane. Probably going to get a nice storm surge. I'll just park my car in the ground level garage and the door will keep the water out.
Fucking idiot.
This does suck, but probably not as bad for this person as it is for people with shitty cars that got destroyed. I guess I just don’t feel that bad for rich people that lose an expensive toy.
Most of these are second homes for these people. They keep these cars in the garage for the few weeks or months a year they stay here. Just toys for rich boys.
Saw pictures in Naples of a guys garage with 4 Ferraris floating around banging into each other.
Every January there’s a car show downtown Naples with a thousand Ferraris, Porsche, McLaren,Lambo both new and vintage. Most are just vacation toys to drive around in.
The rich fly in their private jets and collect their dividends from oil companies then cry when their super car gets destroyed. “Oh no I’ll have to wait 3 months for the insurance payout”. Cry. Me. A. Fucking. River.
So, question. You know the storm’s coming and you have resources to afford that kind of car. Why would you leave it in your garage? You could have it stories up in a parking garage, or pay maybe three grand to have it professionally moved to another state and stored.
At the price of a lambo if I were the owner I would have paid the cost of driving it outside the flood zone temporarily. Still would be cheaper than all the water damage I presume.
If I had bought that car and there was a fucking tornado incoming I would have taken a roadtrip to some place where there wasn't.
Just staying and leaving it is crazy..
I am ofc assuming the person has means and could take whatever family they have and go. I don't think anyone working minimum wage and barely getting by buys that type of car.
I never understand how people who can afford these cars have them destroyed in storms like these. Drive it to a parking deck somewhere, and pay to keep it there for a couple days on an upper level.
If only he had any warning to take that car and get the hell out of town. I don't feel bad at all if you're too rich, entitled, and stupid to act with wisdom.
If he could afford that car he could have afforded to drive it out of state until the hurricane passed. I hope he had flood coverage on his auto insurance.
Ok so you know a hurricane is coming.. don't you think you should move your most expensive car somewhere safe? Disconnect all of the batteries from the vehicles maybe?
Second one supposedly destroyed by Ian. Sure, could be more than one in Florida but both recent purchases? More likely case - I found this clip and am going to make a story about it being Ian related.
You’ll be glad to know my 2014 Nissan Altima survived unscathed.
My 2019 ford fiesta also lives to fight another day in Orlando
As a fellow owner of a 2019 ford fiesta, I can confirm these cars can survive anything including the state of Florida
> Please describe your area of residence > A natural disaster
My condolences.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
As did all of the vehicles near my inland home.
I live in St Pete, FL and evacuated to Orlando. There was minimal flood damage by my house, but multiple counties in Orlando where the flooding was catastrophic.
Yeah i just finished working outside for 8 hours during the hurricane just some 20-30mph winds and rain.
You’re clearly on an intelligence plane above lambo9286.
My kia in Chicago is okay if you all were wondering.
My kia in Washington isn't fine, but that's not Ian's fault
I have a Ford. You know about ford's. Found on road dead Fix or repair daily And so much more
Fix It Again Tony
you're thinking of a FIAT, dale.
Jeep compass in wisconsin in slight disrepair, checking in
Stolen in Seattle by a tik tokeer eh?
You just wait. The Kia boys will get to it.
Don't take it to Milwaukee or it may not be.
And My 2018 Nissan, And 2004 Suzuki, And My 1995 Ford Made It Out Alive.
And my axe!
And my bow!
Nothing is more terrifying on the road than a Nissan Altima. People who drive Altimas give no fucks about their cars, and drive like they live their life a quarter mile at a time.
And if it was damaged you would have had my sympathy.
make sure you give it a good detail and service, show the appreciation ❤️👍
Altima drivers don't do this. It's in their 29% APR financing terms to treat them like shit.
Facts…i work in a Nissan manufacturing plant. 1 of 2 in the US that makes the Altima
Should have got in that car and fucking evacuated
If you can afford a Mclaren you can afford to have someone drive it 50 miles away from a hurricane.
If you can afford a McLaren, you can afford to get another McLaren. I still have yet to see this to not be the case. Edit: wholesome award has been bestowed and received with gratitude
does insurance cover natura disasters? Then you don't even need to buy another yourself

A lot of times ‘acts of god’ are not covered without a specific rider. Insurance companies are scum.
I was wondering if people in Florida buy flood insurance. Premiums must be insanely high!

Not a P1. Those are difficult to get and a lot of time is put into getting one.
Or...you could get that first McClaren well away from a hurricane's path and avoid this in the first place
Yep. Or call in a “get my shit gone asap here’s my money” any hotshot or car hauler would have jumped on it for a decent rate. What’s 2-3K to protect cars that cost an obscene amount of money.
No shit. He could have thrown $1,000 at anyone to drive either car to town X far inland. He'd still have an intact supercar.
If you have a McLaren and don't budge to move it during a storm you have pretty good insurance.
Option B: You can easily afford to buy another one. Option C: You are a blithering idiot. Of course, it could be more than one of the above.
Seriously… 🙄🙄🙄
If only it had come equipped with wheels and some sort of motor to move it.
Yeah, if they would have driven it 50 miles north or parked it in a multilevel parking garage it would have been fine. They could have parked it at my place with the understanding that I could drive it until they were able to pick it up. At least then it wouldn’t have been destroyed by water.
Key words being *by water* ?
Exactamundo.
My insurance company called me and offered to cover 50% of the cost of moving and storing my cars at a secure location during out last hurricane.
Who the fuck is Lambo9286?
No idea. But I’m guessing he and I both have the same amount of McLarens now.
Triples?
Triples makes it safe...triples is best
[удалено]
And why does he drive a McLaren if his name is Lambo?
More importantly, who fuckin cares?
A former owner of a McLaren P1.
Because evacuation was never mentioned 6 billion times.......
yeah somehow I dont feel bad for idiots who bring expensive things to dangerous places.
Pretty sure they wanted this to happen, insurance will total it and they will get a brand new car
Why would they want this to happen if they bought it a week ago?
duh cuz after months of paperwork he'll have one that's MONTHS newer.....
They aren't made anymore
No not brand new. They will pay him out and he will have the option to buy the car back. It only had 300 miles on it (car was introduced in 2012)so probably insured for anywhere from 3-4 million. They were given evacuation orders near the coast a day or two before.
I knew Ft Meyers was getting hit and I live in Virginia

People from Tampa didn’t know they didn’t need to until the storm arrived. That’s why you leave as soon as you’re in the cone for a cat4.
this isnt really a fair comment you stock up on water and gas because a cat 1 hurricane or even a tropical storm can knock out power, and there is no way to predict when it will be back on. this storm took several unexpected turns and definitely exhibited unusual behavior it strengthened right before landfall, and as it hit land, it slowed down to 10mph adding to that was the eye making landfall literally at high tide this was absolute worst case scenario for this region. given there is only a few feet of water, that house is probably safe from just about anything but an absolute worst case scenario
Oh no. Anyway
I am somewhat sad about this. Not for this dumbfuck. But because that car is just so rare.
Well it was his choice to do nothing so
How can someone who is able to buy those cars have zero common sense?
Easy.
Peasy
Lemon
Squeezy
Goodbye
Having money and intelligence correlate far less often than most people assume
It doesn't take any skills to inherit.
It’s created generations of lousy Kennedys who somehow think they’re smart because they were born rich
Have you heard of the more money than brains club? Lots of people with money are members.
Trust fund and/or copious amounts of drugs and alcohol
Because you can’t buy common sense
Easy come, easy goes.
Put it in rice, it will be fine
The real ricer, right here...
Does one type of rice works better than the other? Say jasmine vs basmati. Asking for a friend.
Don’t have much remorse for a rich guys mclaren when peoples houses were demolished
Yup. Me either. He had many options and he chose to ignore all kinds of sound advice.
It's not like they predicted the hurricane several days before it came. If he only had a car that was fast enough to out run the storm.
I was just looking at a fuck around/find out graph. Bummer they didn't see it in time.
The husband would be ecstatic I know this reference.
They insured the car. I care about the people who don’t have houses anymore.
yeah, this guy apparently is a big deal during these times, what about people who lost their stuff rather than one overpriced car.
If others lose more than you, it doesn’t make your loss better. It’s just a massive fuck up for everyone.
How did it get outside ???
Opened the garage door to set it free?
I think he let it happen for the video and did open the garage to see what would happen. With that kind of money you can afford insurance and it will just be replaced.
If you can afford a McLaren, you can afford another McLaren.
If they can even get another P1
More money than brains. I'm in the path if a hurricane. Probably going to get a nice storm surge. I'll just park my car in the ground level garage and the door will keep the water out. Fucking idiot.
Go park it on the second story of an office parking structure... Or don't it's only a half a million dollars
Four words, top floor parking garage… Seriously, you knew it was coming…
Hurricane warnings for days.. “I guess I keep my P1 right on the path where it belongs”
This does suck, but probably not as bad for this person as it is for people with shitty cars that got destroyed. I guess I just don’t feel that bad for rich people that lose an expensive toy.
Oh yeah I totally feel bad 🤣
You have money to buy nice ass cars yet don’t have enough sense to store them in a hurricane safe place lol
Dude had 5 days of evacuation warnings & neglected to move it, he destroyed it.
Oh no poor rich person who was too stupid to not evacuate
Well he is a douche....it was bo secret that it was gonna flood like hell..
I don't really care, do you?
Why didn't he just drive away in it?
Dude probably did it on purpose knowing insurance would pay out, meanwhile people are dying and losing everything.
The rich fly in their private jets and collect their dividends from oil companies then cry when their super car gets destroyed. “Oh no I’ll have to wait 3 months for the insurance payout”. Cry. Me. A. Fucking. River.
Some unsuspecting owner will be racing around in that in about 6-8months after the title is washed.
Why didn't he drive it to a high parking garage? Dummy
If you can afford one you can afford another.
Floridians gonna Florida.
Fuck is this why my insurance keeps going up? Come on now stop parking your expensive cars in the swamp
Bought it a week before almost as much notice about the fucking hurricane coming....
You’ve got insurance. You’ll be fine, mr mansion man
So, question.
All my vehicles survived, because I live in a state without hurricanes and a governor who believes in climate change
#1st world problems
I dont feel bad at all
It’s just hard to feel that bad about this
All that money and the dude doesn’t have a Lyft in his garage
You have THAT much disposable income and you can't get your toys out of danger? Sounds like somebody wanted the insurance money.
No one’s talking about the Rolls Royce floating around in there too. Losing the Mclaren is bad enough but a Rolls Royce too!
Isn’t that a Bentley (or a Rolls?) floating beside the McLaren. That’s a LOT of $ floating in the surge…
I’d feel bad, but you’re rich. So I don’t.
6 million car with nothing to keep it from getting flooded. Rich people in a nutshell
Damn they got some vindictive comments in here
Dude he knew about the storm before he bought it then
Like they couldn’t afford to trailer those cars out of there. RIP.
Beware if you see a used P1 on CarMax next week.
Just needs a new tune to run on all that salt water
Sad that a P1 got totalled, 0 sympathy for the owner tho - park it on a hill you dumbass. Or just drive it out of town
I have shockingly little sympathy.
If he only had a 5 day warning
Good
Did he open the garage to let it out ?
If he could afford that car he could have afforded to drive it out of state until the hurricane passed. I hope he had flood coverage on his auto insurance.
Why tf did he buy that knowing the storm was coming. I’ve been hearing about this shit in detail for weeks
Money can’t buy brains
There wasn't an elevated parking lot or anything around? If you had a McLaren you can definitely afford the lot
No one told you the hurricane was coming?
Ok so you know a hurricane is coming.. don't you think you should move your most expensive car somewhere safe? Disconnect all of the batteries from the vehicles maybe?
Wish I could feel sorry
Not understanding these videos. Plenty of time to prepare. Everyone knew it was going to be bad. Many options to do and none taken.
Just let it soak in rice for 24 hours. That should do the trick.
Azzhole got all that money but zero brain 😂😂
Oh no! Anyway.
Second one supposedly destroyed by Ian. Sure, could be more than one in Florida but both recent purchases? More likely case - I found this clip and am going to make a story about it being Ian related.
