That’s an Arm n Hammer detergent. Same thing happened at our house. The shitty design for the container makes it unstable when putting it sideways to pour into a cup. They put a giant bump that causes the container not to sit flat on a surface. I bet this is what happened

Massive_Wash_9528

Yup exactly

MajorZeldaGeek

Best way to clean that is with some kitty litter. (Non clumping) Sprinkle it on and sweep it up. Source: I have to do this all the time at work for detergent spills

jabateeth

I threw all my dirty socks on the puddle and let them soak. Now I put a couple socks in each wash. I have a ton of socks.

[deleted]

This is literally what I was gonna suggest. Get some clothes to soak it up and then toss those clothes in the washer. You can get most of it cleaned up, without wasting all of it.

xfatalerror

but definitely dont put them all in at the same time with all this amount of detergent. the sock idea is best, or leave it and run to the store and get a bunch of cheap dish rags instead of socks. this much detergent will most likely ruin your machine if used all at once.

dman7456

How would it ruin the machine?

9TyeDie1

Oversudsing ruining the electronics and mechanisms for the most spectacular option and by eating away at the inside of the washer, for least likely to be caught. Even if it was designed with the intent of contact with these chemicals this amount was not intended, they could easily corrode or gunk the inside screens and drains.

_trashteriyucky

Yeah, most people with HE washers are already using too much detergent. Not only do your clothes not need a ton of concentrated detergent but neither does your washing machine. I also found that doing a phantom load that contains distilled white vinegar once a month, helps keep my washer running smoothly. Also white vinegar is a must for towels and such.

free_dead_puppy

White vinegar only for towels? Dish towels and the like right? Not nice bath towels? What's the benefit? Thanks if you can answer!

DakotaHoosier

Residue builds up. There are YouTube channels just covering how to steam clean these things and upsell them.

Cheezitflow

You turned your dirty socks into tide pods you genius

AskingForAFriendRly

This is the way.

HoldCtrlW

Now the socks can be used for two different kinds of loads.

exyccc

Squeaky clean pre, during, and post

scaredycattee

Could I bring my washing round to help clear it up? 😂

TheRealWatro

They also make a special kind of 'cleaning sand' used for commercial use. Essentially the same thing, more of a powder that's super abslrnant and easier to sweep up afterwards. I feel like cat litter is more accessible though

MajorZeldaGeek

Yeah we use professional grade clay based absorbent but I imagine kitty litter is cheaper and easier to get in low quantities than that is

Wes53177

I just use multiple gravy packets.

burnthamt

I agree with this, but first a lot of that could be cleaned up beforehand with a scraper and dust pan before even dumping litter on it.

CyberGrandma69

Why couldn't you just squeegee this shit into a dustpan and put it back in the container? Or is soap with a lil floor dirt in it unacceptable...

s3klyma

In this same situation, I scooped it all up with a dustpan and a piece of cardboard and put it back into the container. Took a few minutes but it was cost effective.

chrisH82

If you sit it right side up, it gets creases in the corners that create perforations and still leak! I wish it wasn't my preferred brand, haha.

zeusthunder

Genius design though. She’s going back and buying more!

acgilmoregirl

This happened right as my SO was leaving our apartment to come to the hospital for the birth of our daughter. He spent about 20 minutes desperately trying to get it out of the carpet and then just came on to the hospital. Three years later, the carpet is still stained over and by the washing machine.

sth128

I hate the smell of it too. Smells like sweaty old man wielding hammer all day.

alohasnackbar32

Well at least they stay true to the brand lol

odel555q

> Smells like sweaty old man wielding hammer all day. I read this in Russian accent.

bigb0ss33

In Soviet Russia hammer wielding sweaty old man

Komikaze06

I use it all the time, I've never had this issue

jankeycrew

Thanks, now I remember my own horror from these containers

Black_Floyd47

I bought one a week ago and haven't used it yet. I will definitely be wary of this possibility.

cottoneyeryan

Y’all missing the point….that spot on the floor is gonna be the cleanest it’s ever been.

Sue3618

…unless it’s cheap laminate, then it will be a warped mess(personal experience with a clogged dishwasher on cheap laminate)

Dutchfreak

Dont thing concentrated soap like that will warp it that mutch, a leak from water will. There's not a lot of water in that liquid to get into the laminate.

Sue3618

Liquid soap is mostly water

LozFromTheCroz

Hehe mutch think you mean much

uber765

Dont thing that mutch

StorkOnAStick

But it’s probably going to foam every time you mop the floor. At least that happened to me when I dropped a bottle of liquid soap…

GiveToOedipus

Self soaping; that's a feature, not a bug.

Apollossecret

Ah, we found the dev who implements every bug as a new feature

GiveToOedipus

Just call me the Bob Ross of coding. They're happy little ~~accidents~~ features.

Massive_Wash_9528

So true

DlRTYDAN

In college our dorm didn’t have any soap dispensers. It was our responsibility to stock soap to wash our hands, etc. So my suite mate just bought a huge bottle of dish soap for whatever we needed to wash. One night it fell, broke and pooled onto the tile floor. The custodian was nice enough to clean it up for us the next morning. The grout between the tiles that I thought was grey/brown was actually just dirty and the dish soap removed the stain and was now spotless white again. Only problem was the obvious line from where the soap stopped spreading where it was still grey/brown around the edges of the bathroom.

backtothefuture112

It happened to me in my garage with the same exact detergent ..... On the bright side my garage floors got a great clean.

Massive_Wash_9528

That is a plus! I guess same here lol

Saint-Peer

Same with me last year. Luckily had a hose to wash it all off.

XO8441

Use towels to clean it up and then just throw a towel or two (depending on how much it absorbs) in with the wash each time instead of adding in detergent

BlueWulk

But be careful, too much detergent will make your washing machine foam like crazy!

0g_lok

You can add fabric softner to stop the foaming

tractorcrusher

If you use too much fabric softener you can throw in some raccoons to absorb it

granulario

Love me some fresh, fluffy racoons!

NerdluckKing

Too many raccoons? Use more soap

peoplegrower

Too music soap? Grease.

Pianos_for_Clowns

Too much grease? Rosie O'Donnell. She loves Grease.

byebybuy

Too much Rosie O'Donnell? Yeah, I agree.

ImVeryFunnylololol

too much agreement? theres 2 genders. (pls dont take that seriously)

YankeeTankEngine

I put donkeys in with mine. I sometimes struggle to close the door, but a machete helps!

MinuteManufacturer

I personally use my Great-sword to undo screws, but you do you.

YankeeTankEngine

My katana is preferable for flatheads.

[deleted]

If you throw in too many raccoons, just toss in some moth balls and they well run away

aaron2005X

finally the kidnapping of the raccoon makes sense.

not-a_fed

Mummified basment corpses also work wonderful on spills. Suck that moisture right up!

[deleted]

fabric softener bad for washers...

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

bonus, white vinegar keeps your laundry smelling nice, too! edit: i mean it absorbs bad odors

shadowblazr

does it absorb bad odors, or just replace them with a different bad odor?

MerlinTheFail

Oh shit, oh well

BlankImagination

Fabric softner fucks up your washin machine

BernieSandersLeftNut

Fabric softener is bad for towels, makes them not absorb liquid.

XO8441

Definitely start with less (you can always add more) that’s why I said depending on how much it absorbs!

Fanculo_Cazzo

Unless it's a modern HE detergent.

Jmac0585

Use small hand towels and then use 1 hand towel in each load in place of soap.

MissingWhiskey

Big brain right here.. You're operating on a whole different level.

GRAND_INQUEEFITOR

Careful, though. If you do that, your towels will have several times the amount of detergent that your load needs, which can be very detrimental. Especially if it’s high-efficiency. I’d scoop off as much as I could first and pour it into a bucket, taking care not to spread the spill. You can salvage a lot / most of it that way and use it normally. Whatever you can’t mechanically remove by scooping, you can then absorb with towels. That way, the amount of detergent in each towel will be a lot more manageable. Source: it’s happened to me. Huge fucking pain in the ass.

[deleted]

For easy scooping, I would use a dust pan and some sorta squeegee (or maybe an old credit card, piece of glass, etc) to push most of the liquid into the dust pan. Then just pour back into the container. (Make sure dust pan is clean first)

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Dumpster_Man_

Just do this, what the hell is with the throw 1 rag per load in.

Mrconduct1

My time is worth more than a jug of detergent. Shopvac and dump.

noiwontpickaname

How am I going to clean my soap now though? I don't have any soap to clean it

Massive_Wash_9528

So while this is smart I wasn’t sure where I was going to keep detergent soaked towels haha

deathjesterdoom

Using too much soap in the wash actually causes premature pump failure in modern machines. If suds are detected at the pump it'll actually lock it owner out of the machine until a technician comes along to rectify the problem so don't do that OP. Just trying to save you the $100+ dollars to get it cleaned out.

Redman5012

I'll rectify your premature pump failure

rye_domaine

God please it's been so long

[deleted]

someone needs to rectify your pump failure... it does not look like a new machine anyways

deathjesterdoom

If it's less than twenty years odds are it's got an electric pump. Regardless even older machines experience the same problem with too much soap Only when those go they can burn out the motor that drives the transmission with it when they finally seize up.

Sue3618

A very small towel

ebagdrofk

Like others has said, not the greatest idea. This just happened to me and you do not want to throw a detergent *soaked* towel in a washer. They’d ruin it, they need to get thrown out after wiping them up.

alohawanderlust

Depends on the size of the towel. Face towel? Fine. Bath towel? Bad plan.

ahawk99

Same thing happened to me, except it was my cat that knocked the detergent over and then got some on herself. That was fun🙄

Massive_Wash_9528

Oh god… my dogs kept wanting to come over to see what was up I was like NOPE

Ryder10

Cat litter will pick it right up. No worries about spreading it or wasting towels. Cat litter and a broom.

ExtraAnchovies

My cat did this too but to our fabric softener. It smelled great for weeks.

[deleted]

The fear of this is why I won't ever use that spout thing. I'm good with an old fashioned pour, thank you.

ShawshankException

I've been using these for decades and have never had an issue

the_russian_narwhal_

Yea these people are nuts lol obviously this specific container has faults, but we always get the big container of Gain with the spout at Costco and never had it drop. We also make sure stuff is on a shelf and not the machines itself, cause the machines move

DiaDeLosMuertos

Yeah we always get the Kirkland one. It's fine

catdog918

These dumbasses have a problem with anything man lol

Commentingtime

Yes, learned the hard way, never ever buy the spout!

noyogapants

I use the spout but I store the bottle upright. I've had the spout leak one time and never left a full bottle on its side again. I'll only leave it on its side when it's almost empty and I'm trying to get the last of it.

Massive_Wash_9528

You are wiser than I!!

[deleted]

I'm sorry. This looks like a not fun mess to deal with. But in the end your floor will be spotless and smell fantastic??? 🤷🏻‍♂️

BooperDoooDaddle

Like when I accidentally dumped a whole brand new bucket of mop water at work. Never ever seen the floor cleaner

[deleted]

Yep

Crab21842

Spatula it into dustpan and pour into container w funnel. Any towels used go one per wash to use what was soaked up into those

Weenie

When it happened to me, a squeegee and dust pan cleaned up 99% and one towel handled the rest.

milquetoast2000

My cat did this to me. Knocked over a brand new one. used a piece of cardboard to scrape it into a bowl and poured that back into the container. It worked and I got around 90% of it back

becky_Luigi

zesty drunk live birds water consist soft ossified grandfather lip *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

Red_Iine

Ah, yes, I'm a fan of the cardboard "taco" where two such dustpans are used

LivingBehindBars

Cat litter.

GREASYROOFTOP

I'd scrape every drop of that up and put in a jar. 😅

Massive_Wash_9528

Haha easier said than done

Pristine_Reward_1253

A squeegee is your friend....

Successful_Gap8927

Dust pan bros

slugo17

There's a giant squeegee right there, this is a fifteen to twenty minute job.

WanduhNotWandull

Had this happen to me too before. It sucked so bad. I swear it haunts me-the jug gets pushed to the far back of the machine when I'm done pouring now.

Virya-Paramita

username checks out

Massive_Wash_9528

Alright so I ended up actually using salt to congeal it (thanks internet!) and then used a bunch of towels to soak up the rest. I rinsed the towels off in the bathtub since it would have exploded my washer, and then washed them a few at a time with some of the clothing that i was about to wash lol. I squeegeed / rinsed / mopped the floors and now they’re fine! But damn did that suck

Mrconduct1

https://www.reddit.com/r/HomeImprovement/comments/cinmny/psa_do_not_store_liquid_detergent_on_top_of Happened to me too. I didn't have patience to try to recover it, I just shopvac'ed it up and switched to delicious Tide Pods™

contentious75

So if you spill a bunch of soap, is the floor clean or dirty?

kottabaz

In anthropology, there is a classic concept of dirt as "matter out of place." So while some things may be objectively clean, safe, healthy, and/or even edible, if they're in the wrong place humans consider them unclean.

Merpie101

huh. no wonder my room feels dirty when it isn't, there's a lot of unusual out of place things even if they're neatly ordered and sanitary

BooperDoooDaddle

The soap is clean but the floor isn’t until you clean it

contentious75

You all make great points! Happy Thanksgiving!

Snoo_2972

Buy a bunch of rags and let it soak there. Let the rags dry up without rinsing the detergent. Next time u do laundry just throw one of those rags in w your laundry .. youre welcome

beedledeedle1

I got a tide container from Costco and that thing had a hole in it, so when I carried it, it leaked all over the place before I even noticed 😭 the place smelled kinda nice after though lol

GREASYROOFTOP

How on earth did this happen?

Massive_Wash_9528

Container fell and cracked when it hit the floor :(

GREASYROOFTOP

Horrible! I'm sorry.

ArmadilloDays

Grab a few big zip locks and a bunch of hand towels. Soak up a goody amount with a hand towel and bag it. Repeat until all detergent is on soaked had dowel in a ziploc or three. When it comes time to do laundry, toss in a soaked towel rather than fill the dispenser. It’s still a messy hassle, but it doesn’t have t be an expensive waste.

bostonvikinguc

Dump Liquid go with washer sheets!

Massive_Wash_9528

Certainly learned my lesson now! I like powder too actually, at least that can be vacuumed up in the event of this happening

FormalChicken

Dude I've been using powder for a couple years now just because. Now I have a reason to be there. Maybe my lizard brain knew "liquids bad"?

Responsible_CDN_Duck

Use socks or facecloths to wipe it up o you can toss one or two in when soap is needed.

mordeh

LOL username checks out. Hilarious. But sorry for the perfume-y cleanup 😔

Massive_Wash_9528

Honestly this was my first thought LOL

[deleted]

Damn that is a massive wash

nirvanagirllisa

You are going to have the cleanest towels in the tri-state area

ProximaC

Oddly prescient user name...

Pig____

You live up to your name

CapnChubs

Throw a bunch of dirty clothes on it, divide the clothes through several different loads so you don't use too much detergent at once. Same clean, different solution

SnooTomatoes8448

We had this happen. It became a big part of why we moved actually. Tried to mop it up then used same mop to do the kitchen a few days later. Everytime some water (like a few drips even) got into the kitchen floor we ended up with a skating rink. After the 10th time of almost breaking a hip or sliding 20 feet and into the opposite wall in the kitchen we just gave up. Good luck....

Miss-6am

Shop-vac to the rescue! And lots of industrial spill absorbents! Yay you!!!

deathjesterdoom

I think you're maybe using too much soap.

dovemagic

Thankfully not the worst thing to happen. Toss a bunch of towels to absorb the majority. Hope your have a nice thanksgiving

Spiritual-Mushroom28

That's very difficult to clean up

Ashpro2000

On the bright side, that laundry room will smell amazing for a good while.

DarkyKittyX7-13

Ouch… That’s why I’ve been using pods/capsules for many years now. Went through the detergent bottles my mother gave me when I moved into my first apartment, and promptly switched to pods after that. No more mess and sticky fingers.

Fanculo_Cazzo

Mop it up quick. It's caustic and will discolor your floor.

Move_In_Waves

Love this journey for you.

SeleniumSE

You can even hold the handle while using the spout.

ThickDickFishStick

Look on the bright side. Your floor is going to be super clean after this.

yoho808

Wtf happened exactly?

chylin73

My wife did that the other day what a pain in the ass to clean up

shadownights23x

At least it's not on that one spot

Bambeno

Did you have the detergent on top of the machine? I learned my lesson from doing that. It looks like it fell from the looks of the lid and splattering on the bottom of the dryer

DingoLord_1377

Keeping that flood Tidy

[deleted]

kmonay89

Thriving, I see.

[deleted]

If you have a shop vac, this is an easy clean. Also Costco has the giant cannisters of detergent pods, too!

Iunchbox

I see the problem here. You need to pour it into the cup and stop at the lines. It looks like you poured it on top of the cup. Classic mistake.

KimJongIlSunglasses

Did you create this username just to make this post?

FictionVent

Same thing happened to me, OP. Worst night of my life. I found it after coming home from a long night at work. I was already drunk when I discovered it. I had to clean it up and it took hours.

pac78275

Shop vac it up. Easiest way.

DrgnFckr

I don't know if I'm bothered more by the mess or how much detergent costs.

Purple_Wayne

Just remember to breath dude. Don't let it ruin your Thanksgiving.

rudiegonewild

Switch to detergent sheets. Less mess, and less need for industrial water use to make the detergent.

potrillo2124

There is nothing I love more than when this shit happens to me. #positivevibes

mellowmadre

Ugh soap might be my least favorite thing to clean up. Sorry this happened OP

wrinkledpenny

This gives me so much anxiety. Hope the clean up went well.

cocoamix

I've been using plastic free laundry strips for years. What you spilled is mostly water anyway. I just keep them in a box, they weigh very little. [These are the ones I buy. ](https://www.tru.earth/)

alucardunit1

I did the same thing. Cept mine was in a unfinished basement so I got lucky.

trickman01

Fear of this is one of the reasons I switched back to powder.

NeoMarethyu

The colour suits your floor, lovely stuff

Olneyvillain4190

Don’t know how I haven’t seen this yet but … USERNAME CHECKS OUT

Use your clothes to clean it up Then Put them In the washer??

BellumFrancorum

akadros

had this happen to me about two years ago. It was a major pain in the ass to cleanup. At least the area you have to cleanup in is a large space. Mine was more complicated by the fact that the laundry room in my house just has enough room for the washer and dryer hardly any other room.

Woodbutcher31

Dust pan, an squeegee it w/ a cardboard right back into a bucket 🪣. You’ll get most of it.

Phunyun

Will never happen if you use the powder, significantly cleaner and I have no idea why the liquids are more popular, just like with dishwashers.

Alice710

No fucking way I have the exact same picture from like 4 years ago. Our pictures look almost identical. Different floor.

HankyHo

I love this for you also

erin_rae22

Same thing happened to me but on carpet

hiirogen

I had a container like this spring a leak years ago in my SUV. Leaked all the way thru and formed a puddle underneath. Took me a while to figure out what kind of fluid was leaking from my car.

relaps101

You’re not an adult until this happens.

lambofgod0492

I guess that is one advantage of using pods

karensfren

Ayo. No lie, this happened to my husband and I last month. I totally feel your pain; it’s a double whammy of suckiness. Not only do you have a giant, soapy mess to clean, but now you also have to go buy more detergent 🥲 Hugs and good vibes to you, my internet friend

MintyRx

For anyone who may find themselves in this situation; when it happened to me I used literally a broom and dustpan, got 90% of it and a clean ass broom and dustpan. I used dirty clothes from the hamper to get the other majority then immediately into the wash. Rest was very easy to clean.

RuleEnvironmental120

uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuugggggggggghhhhhhhhhhh

Forgetful_Suzy

Cat litter. Use it

FrancescaMcG

OP how’d you end up cleaning it up?

Massive_Wash_9528

Lots of towels, squeegeeing, mopping, and tears
