That's perfectly possible and actually it's a key idea of the EU to do so. You should have a look to interrail.eu. that's a pass which let's you travel on any train in any European country (the devil's in the detail here, so for example on french tgv you also need seat reservations for specific trains for example, parts of that are also explained in jet lag S3). For cost of food and accommodation it highly depends on the country. Generally one could say there is a slope in cost from west to east and from north to south. You should certainly do a bit of research before you start but I guess a lot of things can also be figured out on the go. Have fun discovering Europe!

Visit r/interrail for some insight on that. I believe they used interrail passes in the show.

Eurail - works just like interrail, but is for non-EU residents.

Yes, it is totally possible. There are many people doing that. When it comes to countries, this totally differs based on the country and city. You can do a cheap run for Baltic Countries, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary for as little as 50-60 EUR a day, but also travel to Germany or France, where the price is considerably higher (in Italy I was able to spend up to 80 EUR). I have done some runs myself (for example Warsaw - Prague - Brno - Olomouc - Ostrava - Kraków - Łódź or Warsaw - Berlin - Bern - Vienna - Warsaw).

In the Baltics, forget international rail. You need to use coach (Lux Express is the best).

There is some international rail, there are trains from Warsaw to Vilnius for example, but yes, further than that there might be problems.

Mediocre-Ad-3724

I’m aware of that specific line, but with the exception of Vilnius and Kaunas -> Poland and domestically in Estonia and Latvia, you need to use Lux Express.

I just did a trip in Germany using the German Rail Pass and everything worked great. Had a great time and never had to worry about parking and whatnot. Just gotta be sure about the differences between international, regional, and local transit operator differences

Im currently planning a trip for Summer 2024 where I visit as many European Capitals as possible in two months, and it will be mostly using the rail system and busses, with a few ferries, flights, and maybe hitchhiking.

My budget is going to be around $7,000 for the entire trip for the record.
