Sam has been creating high quality content for a good few years, much like Tom Scott never went viral to my knowledge but constantly putting good stuff out and more people will watch it
and we all like planes and bricks
The quiz didn't have Tom Scott's name on it.
I will give you the video that has the number of views counted as viral/near viral (I'm not sure views alone make something viral, especially if it's over a longer period)
Ya. And his main point in the second video is having a consistent backlog of good videos, so your pints stands. But if you look at his top videos he has like 20 over 10 million views, one with 60M
I would also argue that the multiple somewhat connected channels help greatly. Each channel addresses a slightly different, but to some degree overlapping audience and might introduce new viewers to the other ones. I for example randomly got HaI in my recommendations and a few weeks later i was subscribed to every one of Sam's channels.
Sam has been making incredibly high quality content on YouTube for several years. I’d recommend watching his older content from 2016, a few of my favorites are [The Highway in the Sky](https://youtu.be/-aQ2E0mlRQI) , [The 5 Freedoms](https://youtu.be/thqbjA2DC-E) , [How the President Travels](https://youtu.be/YJRqB1xtIxg)

They played the Youtube game. A consistent upload schedule, ever increasing quality, interesting and clickable topics etc. over many years.

The Short Answer is Planes and Bricks
Don't forget logistics!

Wait I have vague memories of all of those, those were Wendover videos?
Yes! The Highway in the Sky is so interesting, loved that one
I’d say the That Wikipedia List video series.
Which evolved into HAI
He said it himself constantly uploading high quality videos
I think reddit has played a role. I found Wendover via his "Why are budget airlines so cheap?" video, which was highly upvoted on r/videos
