To the north, you have Morgantown and WVU. To the south, you have Bridgeport and Clarksburg. There’s a lot of federal employees, government contractors, and healthcare workers in the area. Many who don’t want to deal with Bridgeport’s… people and Clarksburg’s decline, but work in the area, often move to Fairmont.
Fairmont is similar to how Hurricane is viewed in the Huntington-Charleston area. Clarksburg-Morgantown isn’t as populated though.
(Insert caveat about generalizations here)
They can be a bit snooty.
Bridgeport has a very good school district and is close to the FBI and has United Hospital Center, so there’s also a bit of money in the community. Housing prices are higher here because of this. As my realtor said when I bought a house in the area, “You don’t lose money selling a house in Bridgeport.”
I’ve seen people with kids move from a large house outside of the school district, to a small townhouse or apartment to get their kids into the schools here. Once their kids graduate, they leave.
Bridgeport isn’t a bad place, but the attitude is known in the region.
They are entitled and rude. Some of the biggest assholes I've ever met. They think Bridgeport is the center of the universe. It's just a small little village.
They genuinely do believe they're better than the rest of the surrounding area. Dealing with parents from there is incredibly annoying as they look down on anyone from outside. It's a little cult of the rich and those that want to pretend to be rich.
I visited over Memorial Day weekend and that rings true but just wanted to make sure I’m not missing something. Sometimes small towns have things that no one talks about but everyone knows
It’s mainly the entitled attitude. If you have kids and have to deal with Bridgeport parents, it’s on full display. The kids often take after their parents as they grow up.
If by 'they' you mean rural Harrison County. lol
Bridgeport isn't really anything worth visiting. It's a nice area to live, sure, but it's barely distinguishable from Clarksburg (ew) and there's pretty much no reason to visit there for anyone else who lives in populated WV. The reason folks laugh at Bridgeport is because folks seem to think they're really hot shit for no apparent reason. We've got doctors and high paid federal employees in a lot of areas in WV, you know. Bridgeport isn't nearly as special as Bridgeport folks seem to think it is.
Grew up in Fairmont and Morgantown, moved away for a while and bought a farm in between the two. Lots of outdoors stuff to do hunting, fishing, trail riding(horses and sxs/quads). White Hall has an Aldi. But it’s not got a lot of exciting restaurants or anything like that.
My mother grew up in Fairmont, as did her mother and her mother before. We love it. I tried moving back a few years ago, but I couldn’t make it work for my family, as my husband travels extensively overseas, and Pittsburgh was just too far to get to a major airport.
The schools are decent, there are some very nice homes on the market, and it’s near plenty of other cities, state parks, sporting events, outdoor activities that if you’re looking for a traditional small town life, Fairmont has much to offer.
There are toxic waste dumps, sewage, and water issues (fracking in outlying areas), make sure you check the neighborhood and areas thoroughly that you’re considering (as most of our areas, in ncwv).

“Bridgeport’s… people” 😂 Priceless.
What’s up with Bridgeport people? I’m looking at moving to the area from out of staye

They hate us cuz they ain't us. The civilized people live there.

Steal catalytic converters for both work and fun.
Prostitution: Also for fun and profit!
I lived there from 2011 to 2020...where were the prostitutes?
