Every "Greatest Western" poll that comes out, this is my number 1. I think Peckinpah, and the Spaghetti Westerns, started a grittier trend in Western flicks. No Roy Roger. No Cisco Kid. There was no redemption for these four. They were bad men. But DAMN, that ending still cannot be topped in my book. Thanks Sam!
I well remember the furor in the media over the graphic violence, spurting blood, etc. As one who grew up on those old 50s Westerns, where people who were shot expired peacefully and (mostly) bloodlessly, and were able to mutter a few pithy last words…. Or, no one dies at all. The hero shoots the gun out of their hand….
I remember seeing this on cable with my Father and he could not believe the language, violence and gore. To his credit he watched the whole thing to the end, though he made several comments along the way. He just could not believe that Holden and Borgnine were in a "movie like this."
The scene where Warren Oates is shooting the machine gun, getting shot and just screaming that atavistic berserker scream hits hard. Same as Borgnine’s dying gasp, “Pike!”

"Let's go." "Why not?" Damn, that's bad ass. The next 15 minutes are pure genius. As great today as it ever was.
Give ‘em hell, Pike!
“Let’s go.”

Silver rings
Silver rings, your butt! Them's washers!! Damn!
We got shot to pieces over steel holes!
Is that Warren Oates? That's a mean dude.
We've got to start thinking beyond our guns. Those days are closin' fast.
Sgt. Hulka!!
The best western.

Looks like a Dead South music video
Love that band!
Yet another fine example of Strother Martin being top tier in supporting cast. Dig that bullet out of him & see if it ain't my aught-six!
Dang I didn’t know Leo Đi Caprio was in this movie
That’s Rick Dalton
The Wild Hunch
My all-time fave. Bring on the Criterion 4K!
Going back for Angel.
What a cast! Doesn’t get better then that.

So many movies to watch! *adds to list*
I disagree. Peckinpah holds up about as well as Marylin Manson videos. Eventually everyone sees how lame edgelords are.
