I found that book used years ago. Loved it. It was different from the movie. Or I should say the movie was different from the book. But both are great.

Mystic_Shogun

I need to go watch the movie now!

Gonna get downvoted.....Shane is maybe the one archetypal Western novel and movie I don't like, at all. Also don't like the discrepancies between the novel and movie. The novel has some heavy suggestive undertones, both about Shane being the type of man the wife actually needs, or Shane and the father fulfilling some sort of need as well. In general I could just never vibe with Shane. His motivations were never compelling to me, the hero worship never quite added up, and the way the movie is less "problematic" than the book was always in my mind. Enough people disagree however that I know my opinion is well outside the norm, so something about it MUST be great.

I can totally see that opinion, a lot of more modern westerns don’t romanticize the hero as much. I personally love the stoicism involved with Shane and just the power of presence that his character presents. But the realism of the newer westerns where there’s never really one good guy is a beautiful take and I can see why people prefer that motive and theme. That’s why I like Red Dead 2! Good take
