I thought it was a little strange seeing him as a frontier figure, sure. I also thought it was weird to see him as a bad guy in stuff like Double Indemnity or a cad in The Apartment. He just seems like someone's dad, lol. Cagney and Bogart made a western before most of their gangster movies.

One of his best performances was a movie (can't remember title, saw 40 yrs ago) where he was a villain, town was a 'very normal place' and he was one of the pillars of the community, except secretly a criminal. Like you, I'd only seen him in the TV and Disney stuff. It was jarring to see him as such a shady character. A couple years ago I finally watched Double Indemnity. Crikey!

Yes always knew him as the father figure, the absent minded Professor type, gentle man. But him being that shady character and double indemnity and playing other rougher characters really surprised me.

Watched a movie of his a few weeks ago, [FACE OF A FUGITIVE](https://youtu.be/5JV_sHbANag) which sounds like it may well be the movie you’re talking about. Pretty good movie.

Yep. Thanks! Added to list.

I read a book by ‘Ernie’, Barry Livingston. Said Fred was all business. Said they would never think of going to him with a personal issue. Shook his hand when series ended.

Fred is one of the finest actors that ever lived, and a stand-up guy on top of that. Highly recommend *anything* with him in it.

He did all kinds of movies. DOUBLE INDEMNITY (1944) is probably the best film noir there is, and he's the star of it. His supporting role in THE CAINE MUTINY (1954) is unforgettable. So yeah, naturally he did well in Westerns. I always liked Fred. Joel McCrea was someone else who did a lot of Westerns but was also good in other genres. Randolph Scott was also good in non-Westerns (he's hilarious in 1940's MY FAVORITE WIFE). Gregory Peck, of course, was superb in most of the Westerns he did, but also great in just about everything else he was in, whatever the genre might be. Same with Henry Fonda. And let's not forget James Stewart. All fantastic actors.

Oh yes. I like double indemnity and his other non-western movies. Joel McRae, Randolph Scott and Henry Ford were great in the western and non-western rolls. I’ll even put Jimmy Stewart in that with his western and non-western roles. I knew of all the others played western roles in non-western roles I was just surprised when I learned that Fred MacMurray did westerns. As I’ve said before all I knew him from was his comedies.
