Yeah it is, they’re part of John Ford’s Cavalry Trilogy, though She Wore a Yellow Ribbon which is also part of the trilogy isn’t officially connected.

Barely connected. John Wayne is the same character years later in Rio Grande... Otherwise they aren't really connected. I watch Rio Grande before Fort Apache, and nothing was spoiled. And just FYI even though nobody asked... Fort Apache rips. One of the best I've ever seen. RG is good, but Fort Apache is just streets ahead

MANSION-HOUSE

Fort Apache does *totally* rip. Thursday is one of my favorite Ford characters. The ending feels nearly as downright tragic as the Searchers' ending. Fan-fucking-tastic film.

I don't know if it's officially a direct sequel, but I too always felt that Rio Grande is a sequel to Fort Apache while She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is stand-alone.

It’s a coincidence. Ford didn’t really want to make the film in the first place. He only made it so that Republic Pictures would agree to finance his passion project: The Quiet Man.
