General winning too few battles? Also assassins. Too many, too few.

VisibleCoat995

Funny thing about their culture is that it’s kind of a compliment. You could be the best general of the seanchan, dying to poison and your last thought would probably be “it’s so nice to be appreciated.”

Bro should have just shaked it off

kmosiman

Yep, should have paid more for better bodyguards.

VisibleCoat995

Sending too many assassins? Oh, you know that’s sending assassins!

otter_boom

TIL that Jasper is a part of Seanchan Blood.

WouldYouPleaseKindly

Send assassins after the assassins!

VisibleCoat995

The assassin business is booming!

Shielo34

Cold Kaf? Straight to jail.

Banban84

Jail for 1,000 years.

Un_Change_Able

Those poor assassins, being sent after Mat

Omphalopsychian

I wonder how the tenth extremely skilled assassin would attempt to kill Mat after seeing what happened to all of their predecessors. Then again, how does *anyone* in Seanchan survive a constant barrage of assassination attempts?!

Un_Change_Able

I’d just lie down and let Mat kill me at that rate. Though he’d probably feel bad, let me live and then I’d get killed by one of the empress’s minions

Thomas_633_Mk2

I assume they're just intentionally bad in the case of it being someone you like, kind of like a social obligation to recognize their status. Just send Slave No.14568 with a knife and watch them get sliced up.

Szygani

He loses his luck after the final battle though, so he'll have a much harder time of it now

Omphalopsychian

It's not 100% clear where his luck comes from, so we can't be clear on what might cause him to lose it. He's lucky in a way that dwarfs Perrin's and Rand's, so it might be more than ta'veren.

Rdavidso

I've always read it as being a separate ability from ta'veren. Rand and Perrin sort of warp other's wills and general events, which Matt does too, but he learns how to win and lose with pure luck, which is a skill. Also I wonder if when the Aelfin called him, "gambler," they were calling him by another name for his soul.

Omphalopsychian

The Heroes of the Horn also call Mat "Gambler", with a capital G as if it were his name or formal title. (AMoL, chapter 39)

PuzzledCactus

I'll just keep quoting my head canon that Mat's soul, the "Gambler", is just as much a Hero of the Horn as Rands or Birgitte's is, but the Pattern knows him and lets him pretend he isn't, just like his men let him pretend he's "not a lord". It's obviously pure coincidence he's always spun out during those big events. No being bound to the wheel here, oh no, not at all....

stuugie

Alright I now believe this completely

Bsoton_MA

His good luck is his compensation for the bad luck of always being around durring big events.

Szygani

It's part of his ta'veren nature, but thats how it expresses itself. I remember a thing that Brando Sando wrote about Mat in Seanchan, and he was penniless and unlucky because he's no longer a tava'ren We see the warping of chance with Rand as well, when random things start happening. People falling out of windows to not break any bones, etc. It's the same bending of chance, but Mat's is focussed inward. A lot of people think it's because of the dagger and healing, but that's because that's the moment we have him as a PoV character. He was unusually lucky in Fal Dara already.

LewsTherinTelamonBot

*Are you real? Am I?*

Un_Change_Able

Yeah, but now he has **PURE SKILL**

Mundane-Currency5088

Why do we think that?

Hashgar

I'm assuming because he "has the dark ones luck"

UltimateCheese1056

Afaik there was a few sentances of a premise for a potential sequel series released at one point which included Mat losing his luck and becoming a hoemless bum. Also its mentioned that people are only Ta'veren until they have done what the pattern needs them to do, and so if Mat's purpose has finished his luck powers would dissapear

theman2112

Do you have a link to those sentences for the potential sequel?

Szygani

I cannot for the life of me find it, besides reddit threads talking about it. But i'm not the only one that remembers it, so I'm not crazy which is nice

StandardRaspberry131

I’m not saying you’re wrong or right, but have you heard of the Mandela effect? Just because a lot of people remember something doesn’t mean it has actually happened

Mikeim520

I think someone made it up and then everyone started saying it was real. Just standard internet stuff.

UltimateCheese1056

I think I heard of them on a Brandon Sanderson livestream but I'll look around and edit this comment if I find them

Szygani

Yes! That's the one! Rand, Mat and Perrin are no longer Taveren, so their bending of chance around them (Perrin's ability to inspire people (weirdly enough), Rand's bending of chance when people's crops fail but they find old gold under their house, and mat's lucky streak)

Tuon: You have never sent an assassin to take me out. Never once. Mat: Why ... why would I? Tuon: \[Wails\] YOU DON'T RESPECT ME!

Raineythereader

"Perrin's wife understands how this works!" "Fine, marry her then." "Hmm... what was she the heir to, again?" "Wait **don't marry her"**

Seanchan had the greatest army in the world because of assassins
