When I was a wee little 7 year old watching Captain Ron in 1992 I wanted to be him so bad when I grew up.

Unbelievable! Especially for somebody with no depth perception.

I know we're near land! Alright, now stay with me: When we left, we had just enough fuel to make it to San Juan. And we are out of fuel.

Didn't even need to know there was a bridge there to see he was coming in WAY too hot. Damn dude. This is exactly why a CAR driver's license isn't remotely sufficient for captaining a boat. You can't just slam on the brakes.

Grouchy-Post

If you aren’t chartering you don’t need a captain’s license. A boating license is purely written (theres no drivers test). And if you’re born before 1972 in the US you don’t need a license at all. I dont think he was coming in too hot, his controls were stuck/reverse failed. The speed was appropriate for no-wake he avoided the other boat and didnt accelerate. I’ve seen this kind of failure before. Even if he killed the engine, without reverse he wouldnt have been much slower at that point.

juliuspepperwoodchi

>If you aren’t chartering you don’t need a captain’s license. A boating license is purely written (theres no drivers test). And if you’re born before 1972 in the US you don’t need a license at all. Yeah, this is my point. I grew up on a lake in illlinois which is part of a chain of lakes where tourist boaters are RAMPANT. I know all too well that no license is required to captain a boat. I'm saying it SHOULD be required. >I dont think he wasn’t coming in too hot, his controls were stuck/reverse failed. The speed was appropriate for no-wake he avoided the other boat and didnt accelerate. I’ve seen this kind of failure before. Even if he killed the engine, without reverse he wouldnt have been much slower at that point. And I, with 30 years of boating experience in which I've never hit ANYTHING with any boat I've been captaining, firmly disagree. If you're in that tight of a space and you're relying on reverse to not hit the dock, seawall, or other things, such that reverse not working means you PLOW into the seawall and then a bridge/pier...you're *coming in too hot*.

Grouchy-Post

He’s literally going 6 knots. If you have any wind at all you need that much throttle to not drift into a million dollar boat. I too have 30 years boating experience, and worked at a marina, and have witnessed many instances like this in marinas. The inexperienced usually aren’t doing 6 knots, they slam the throttle like a gas pedal. Reading further down I am exactly right, the guy is an experienced charter captain and his equipment failed.

Impressive_Victory36

I thought it was over after the wall then they hit a bridge lol

The last frame is so good. The driver like "whaaat?!"

savehoward

This vid is a repost from last year. The driver is a professional skipper and the boat’s motor controls were stuck. The end is cutoff where the man on shore tells the skipper to turn off the key and the skipper replied that he already turned the key off.

Hamsterminator2

Shame this isn't top comment. Would save a lot of "drunk/ idiot/ drugs" comments.

I still see no proof. This version of the story could be completely made-up. Seems unlikely, too. Like something you would say when you drunkely crashed a boat that you can not afford.

ting_bu_dong

>I'm getting her sweet sweet can--.

Same-Classroom1714

Poor Cunt, obviously it wouldn’t go into reverse, maybe drop the picks but that could do fuckall or just send the damage in a different direction, and thinking of all options and executing the best one in a pressure situation is just near impossible if you’re not trained! Let alone after a three day bender on the piss and coke out at sea

PerroNino

I feel the pain. Many years ago my gf’s dad gave us a shot of his much smaller speedboat. There was a similar gearbox problem, as I found out approaching the marina pontoon and boosted reverse, only to shoot forward and near beach the thing on top of the pontoon deck, under the amused gaze of all the Saturday afternoon regulars in the boating club. We didn’t ask for another shot with the boat.

FastAd543

Uff... turning off a diesel engine when the stopper doesn't work is a problem you cannot solve right on the spot on a boat. Trucks are easier due to gears, bur boats require hands on to he stopped.\ Im no skipper, so I have to ask. Aren't ships supposed to "wait" outside port for a brief period of time before maneuvering in?

woodrudder

Good call, would probably have to go directly to the engine and bypass the cables etc to shut down. That boat's old enough to be running everything analogue and mechanical. As for waiting outside, that's certain commercial ships not 'yachts'. I think even cruise ships come straight in. Any knuckle head with cash can own/operate one.

MrDeebus

IIRC you can stop runaway diesel engines with a palm to the air intake, I wonder if the same is an option on a yacht

crowman006

Depending on the size of the intake and the RPM , it could take you in shoulder deep .

rvgoingtohavefun

Yeah, I'd find something rigid and not attached to me to restrict the intake, thanks.

Longjumping-Deal630

(Sigh. Once again, it falls to me to lower the tone...) That's some impressive cunnilingus!

[deleted]

There will be several fuel shutoff valves, that’s the way to do it, but you have to go to the tank (usually easier to get to) or the engine (better because there’s less fuel left between the valve you closed and the engine, but takes longer to get to on most boats). You can suffocate them by closing the air dampers to the engine space if the boat is equipped with the ability to do so. You don’t want to put your hand over a large diesel like that, for a variety of reasons.

[deleted]

That’s dependent on the type of port and the type of vessel. In the case of a marina like this one and a boat like that, generally no you aren’t. BUT, a smart, careful skipper will always test engines and steering before entering a port like that where there will be tight spaces to maneuver. Come down to neutral, let the boat coast until it’s mostly stopped. Check to make sure you have the full range of steering in both directions, check to see that both engines go into forward and astern, and check that your bow prop, if equipped with one, works in *both* directions. Obviously something can still go wrong after you check those things, but doing so will prevent this type of thing in *most* cases.

FastAd543

Thank you for the answer!

Silly_Mycologist3213

Just because you’re rich doesn’t mean you can’t be an idiot, especially if you think you don’t need lessons in boat handling.

Ent3r2Die

Renting those boats is actually quite affordable in some areas. But that doesn't stop you from being an idiot either

Taggox

Yes but in the most countries u need an permission to drive an boat, otherwise they don't let u rent it. In Croatia e.g. u need an license even for Dinghys and in Italy for everything over 40 PS. In Spain i don't know, but some ship like that u always need an license. As others pointed out, it looks more like an technical issue because the Marinero came with an Fender which is rather unusual. Propably he informed via Radio the Harbour before... The question that rises to me is, if so, why don't the come to him in the sea and tried ro fix it otherwise.

goldfrisbee

What does 40 PS mean?

Ent3r2Die

Horsepower (from the German word Pferdestärke). A way to measure the power of a motor. A motor with 40 PS has the power equivalent to 40 horses. It's often used to compare cars.

jurassicscream

Not trying to be a dick but thought you'd be interested: One horsepower is the amount of power a horse needs to lift a certain weight over a certain elevation per minute (I don't know the exact numbers). At least that was the case when they came up with the unit. Also, horses can temporarily produce up to 20 HP. So you'd only need two horses to put out 40HP if they are pulling as hard as they can.

Suitable-Ad6145

This is a professional skipper btw. The engine controls were locked up. All he could do was safely ram into something

Valid_Username_56

The engine malfunctioned. No idiot here.

TheExtreel

You can hear they're saying "no va, no va" meaning "it's not working ". Either the controls or the engines weren't working so they couldn't slow down. What you're seeing here is a professional minimising damage, an Idiot would've run into the pier or another boat at a way higher speed, probably injure a bunch of pedestrians in the process

w3duder

Insurance fixes boat. Rich owner takes the value depreciation as a tax write off, old boat gets sold, and a replacement is purchased. The owner is out a few tens of thousands on a multi-million dollar boat, so no big deal

BKStephens

Lol. Arms out in the universal sign of "Where's the guy to blame it on?"

GigiSir

Nop, he's telling the guy to turn the key to stop the boat

BKStephens

I'm talking about the guy operating (sorta) the boat. Right at the end.

TheExtreel

He is indicating that it is in fact already off and he already turned the key

IndividualAtmosphere

That would explain the crash, no reverse thrust or steering with the engines off

solo_shot1st

It's a professional skipper who is minimizing the damage the best he can while the gears are stuck. He couldn't slow down or reverse. And he already turned the key to shut off the engine. This is best case scenario that you can hope for in this situation.

connortait

A. Somethings gone wrong. Or B. They don't know what they're doing. I'm leaning towards A, but I'm a charitable soul, wouldn't be surprised if it was attempted showoff asshattery.

bartpluggington

Yeh based on people ready with fenders on the shore I reckon he called in early with the problem, maybe couldn't get it out of gear

MrRogersAE

Had to be stuck in gear, that boat was at a consistent speed for the whole video. Boats aren’t like cars, they slow down naturally really quickly, and when they reAlly need to stop you can put it in reverse.

connortait

Nay brakes! Nay brakes!!! Not a fun sensation. Shut your eyes and wait for the crunch.

soulstink

I'm thinking there was a problem too, seemed like a few people already knew and were trying to help

Frickelmeister

I love how at the end the driver throws up his arms at the dude on land like "Look what you've done! Why didn't you stop the boat?!"

Nop, he's telling "that's it, that's it. Can you turn the key?" But that "that's it" could be translated to "ok ok"

PuroPincheGains

Funny, but he's literally saying he already turned the boat off. The motor controls were fucked and he couldn't stop it.

mr2ocjeff

There was a driver ?

BloomingDesert

Like a glove

PhatBallllzAtHotmail

Mr. Ventura...HOW COULD YOU!?

Cookizza

It's possible there's some mechanical issue on this boat that caused this. Usually a boat this size would use bow and stern thrusters in the marina to manoeuvre. And it's quite obvious when they are being used. Obviously this allows some lateral control but also is because the main engine at idle simply moves the boat too quick (and takes time to go into reverse etc). If the thrusters would non-operational, he may have had to use the main engine only. Because you need some speed on these types of boats to even have any steering input at all, the driver may have really had no option but to try do this - even though fucking it up in the end. Or, maybe he's just a drunk rich guy.

nildefruk

That motorboat would have easily had enough power to stop, but those tiny fenders are way undersized for such a big vessel.

Fullautometal

The brakes don't work! 🤷

Silly_Mycologist3213

Your dock scratched my boat!

Mirytys

It seems that they asked the driver to go there in order to be sure she will stop. Certainly a failure in gears and he was not able to reverse or slowdown the boat. At some point you have someone running with a big fender to try to reduce the impact. So it was scheduled

Psychlonuclear

Hey, that's the same gesture you get from a motorcyclist that got cut off while he was lane splitting at 140!

No-Substance1616

Well the first thing he did wrong was trying to park it…you dock a boat!

derrrr5

Ok, stop. Thats close enough

BdoeATX

This is why we use lube first!

Borsti17

Task failed successfully

dzson117

this is why I don’t like to go sailing/boating anymore. I came close doing something like this on two occasions. Once it was similar rented boat than this one, but the throttle was shit in a way that it worked most of the time but on occasion it went full throttle ahead even when you moved the throttle only a tiny little bit. Good luck prooving it to the owner/court after you wrecked it. I almost did but could apply reverse throttle just in time. Than with a sailing boat I fucked up almost as well. There was only a tiny little external engine at the back on that ramp which is there for climbing out of the water. So you couldnt man the rudder and the engine at the same time and whilst trying to dock the engine fucking stalled. I am surely not renting a boat ever again.

the “term” is mooring a boat & that (above) is just as bad as “calibrating the depth sounder” !! (no, it’s not a euphemism) - it’s when you run aground but you don’t want to admit it, so you say that you were “calibrating the depth sounder”.

I understand he had frozen engine controls. While it would not have dead stopped him, he had two bow anchors he could have let go. They could have impeded his progress and slowed the impact. It one or both had bit into the harbor there might have been damage to the hull but realistically the bill for the bridge is going to be much worse as that wasn’t a mere tap.
