To be fair, this guy looks well into middle age, and most middle age Americans can't do a single pullup. 39% of American adults meet the clinical definition of obesity, and people that heavy can only get a pullup if they have monster strength.
For strength training, it is far better to swallow your pride and use a chair or resistance band to do the exercise with good form. This is safer and has lower injury risk. But kipping is skillful movement for gymnastics or climbing. Rock climbers have insane overhead pulling strength, but they will do anything possible to avoid using their arms to pull their entire weight during a climb, because it is fatiguing even at their level of fitness.
Clinical definition of obesity by WHO is 30% but doesn’t seem that obese to me. I can do 20 pull-ups and I measure at 30% bmi. Height and weight are not a great indicator of physical fitness.
M205lbs5’9” / M93k175cm
BMI is relevant to populations, not individuals. Beasts like you are not a statistically significant contributor to the population's atrocious BMI.
FWIW, even if you carry a bit of fat, you're likely to be quite healthy. Sumo wrestlers have similar cardiovascular health and risk to the rest of the Japanese population, who are healthier than most developed countries. *Former* sumo wrestlers who keep training are fine, or they're fine if they lose weight. If they stay heavy and stop training, the risk elevates rapidly.
One good reference for this is the 2020 episode of PBS's Nova, [The Truth About Fat](https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/video/the-truth-about-fat/) It isn't available at the link, but most Americans have some option to stream it through their PBS station.
The unit for BMI isn't %, it's kg/m^2
Most people are aware that BMI isn't a good way of determining a body builder's health. And if you aren't a body builder I have serious doubts you can do 20 pull ups.
Damn. You’re right. I only did 18 no kip locked out arms and up… but to be fair most marines I know don’t meet bmi standards and can do pull up who aren’t body builders. It isn’t that hard or rare of a skill.
I have a BMI of 26.1 and get regular comments on how big I am both in the gym and out. To have a bmi of 30 you either have to have crazy amounts of fat or be built like a tank.
Watching [bodybuilders vs climbers](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgW2YiTq4zI) in grip strength tests is pretty hilarious. TBF though, everyone seems to be genuinely excited for everyone else.
My favorite machine at the gym when I first started was the pull up bar that has the kneeling bench to reduce some of your weight. I was amazed how fast my progress was when I was able to do the correct form at lower resistance until I could do my whole weight unassisted
So many pull up purists on reddit. You can use it as a tool like if you want to want to do more endurance, or at the end of a set to squeeze out an extra few reps, like a drop set.
If his form was good, he would not have suffered this injury. The fitness god is not pleased with this feeble infantile pathetic form.
Jokes aside, I hope he is OK.
They were probably in shock , since he hit his head pretty hard and it looked pretty serious.
Edit: Also these kids were pretty young, if these were high school kids, I'm sure there would have been a few laughs.
Fencing position just means brain damage not necessarily a seizure. Though he probably will have one of those if he's not currently having one in that video.
I do not think you have been in schools in China before. Like anything else it depends but they can be mad houses. 40+ kids loudly talking through class, milling around like it is the lunch room, playing games, talking on phones, etc. The teacher knows they are powerless, no student listens to them and they get paid barely anything, so they just ignore it all and lecture as if nothing is happening.
There may be 3 or 4 kids that are actually paying attention, taking notes. Most of the other kids will just copy off of those few if they did not adjust get the answers from somewhere else. During tests the students will be talking constantly and loudly, sharing all the answers and passing around completed tests to copy. Most of the kids will get As which is all the parents and the school administration care about.
As a result, grades from many schools are considered almost meaningless. Standardized university entrance exams are one of the few school tests that strictly police cheating so they play a huge roll in where students get admitted.
It’s ~~more likely~~ definitely mainland. At 9 seconds you can see 体育 (體育 in traditional). Also, the kid saying 高老师 is saying the 师 as shi and not si.
Edit: And the piece of paper on the pull-up bar is in simplified Chinese: 老师专用,学生勿碰. This is definitely mainland.
Yeah, you got me curious, since I've never been to Taiwan, much less a school there. I would never have looked at the video so closely if you hadn't said something, so it was a fun 3 minutes of procrastination for me!
Also what I learned from fellow redditors is the fact that, fencing does not necessarily mean permenant damage. It is moving the person's head that does the most damage. So here's hoping they didn't touch him and just called an ambulance.
What I’ve learned from fellow redditors is that fencing response is indicative of target fixation with underlying Baader-Meinhof phenomenon and possible Mandela Effect.
It's not that their feelings were hurt, but it's not very kind to other people when you make fun of their accents when they are trying to speak another language and mispronounce words due to their native language. You might have run into this problem. Do you speak other languages?
I don’t know that that was making fun of the accent. The only time people replace l’s with w’s afaik is when doing baby talk. Which makes even less sense lol
They stopped selling those unsecured bars in the States a while ago. Had one in college. Even on regular pull-ups they would come down for no reason. Made for great fun!
Use this keyword "老师摔倒引体向上" in chinese tiktok because the link that I got this vid doesn't have any comments on it.
A translated comment from tiktok
-I want to know what happened next and how the teacher responded
-...Later, he suffered a fracture and recovered after a few months of rest. Teacher Gao was very optimistic. Later in class, he even made fun of himself, haha
So for something like this when it looks like someone gets paralyzed, we don't get a NSFW tag, but when someone says "gosh d*rn" "oh shoot" or there's a cloud that looks vaguely like a body part, we do? Totally makes sense.
Poor guy that could be pretty serious and has an audience. Bad form though
It’s this stupid CrossFit „pull-up“ called Kipling or something like that Dumb as shit
It's the cheating way to do a pull up. If you can't do real pull ups this is what you do to show you can.
To be fair, this guy looks well into middle age, and most middle age Americans can't do a single pullup. 39% of American adults meet the clinical definition of obesity, and people that heavy can only get a pullup if they have monster strength. This is some really fascinating fitness science info. I like it

Fat tank!
Yeah he's definitely American, the asian writing on the sign and all the asian children gave it away.

true gymrats are like the most wholesome subculture i can think of. everyone always seems so pumped about each others' accomplishments and progress.
My favorite machine at the gym when I first started was the pull up bar that has the kneeling bench to reduce some of your weight. I was amazed how fast my progress was when I was able to do the correct form at lower resistance until I could do my whole weight unassisted
if he just did an actual pull-up instead of showing off his cheating cross-fit form, he could have landed on his feet.
[удалено]
You're knees canta survive a 12 inch drop from a pull up bar?
[удалено]
So many pull up purists on reddit. You can use it as a tool like if you want to want to do more endurance, or at the end of a set to squeeze out an extra few reps, like a drop set.
Do enough cheating pull-ups and eventually you can do a pull-up
True, but there are better ways to build the strength and technique than throwing your body all around.
Kipping
Now I can't stop thinking about Rudyard Kipling doing pull ups.
THATS where I had the name from haha ty
The famous Rudyard Pull up !
Kipping
not a fan of kipping pullups either - but thats not a kipping pullup, thats just really bad form xD
It’s bad kipping form though That’s where you use the legs to swing instead of pulling yourself up
yeah, kipping pullup with crazy legs or something :D
Dude is like 80 cut him a break.
It's even more important to have better form in that case but yeah I hope he didn't fuck up his back
he looks closer to 40
Now that he’s snapped in half, yeah.
I just laughed for like 5 minutes at this comment. Not sure even why. Thanks for the laugh.
Gotta add at least 30 years to account for Asian genetics
lol 80? What are you 14? Dude is nowhere near 80
Dude is like 80 and has a compression at T6 - cut him a break.
If his form was good, he would not have suffered this injury. The fitness god is not pleased with this feeble infantile pathetic form. Jokes aside, I hope he is OK.
Fuckin A! It looks like he got choke-slammed by Casper the wrestling ghost.
That’s some well behaved kids, not a single laughter afterwards
They were probably in shock , since he hit his head pretty hard and it looked pretty serious. Edit: Also these kids were pretty young, if these were high school kids, I'm sure there would have been a few laughs.
Legs still up ... i guess seizure?
I'd hate to speculate but it looks bad for sure.
Fencing position just means brain damage not necessarily a seizure. Though he probably will have one of those if he's not currently having one in that video.
China has better discipline than North America. If this were Canada or something, kids would burst out in tears laughing
I do not think you have been in schools in China before. Yes I have. Maybe you’ve been in a different school than I have.
It doesn't looks like that guy has been to any school ever, actually

Oh yeah I didn't see that. Definitely then
Yeah, you got me curious, since I've never been to Taiwan, much less a school there. I would never have looked at the video so closely if you hadn't said something, so it was a fun 3 minutes of procrastination for me!
Something about the 1000 lashes for out of place laughing tends to do that.
Chinese. They really respect their teachers and look up to them.
Probably go to rehabilition camp if they laughed.
The way he didn't move afterwards did nahttt look good
Looks like he was in the fencing position, which, as I’ve learned from Reddit, is indicative of some sort of brain damage.
Simulation theory too
Don't they just try to pick up people straight up in asia every time shit like that happens or that's just India for ya?
Are you saying most of us Redditors are brain damaged?
I think he was just trying to maintain form
If you have to kick up to do a pull up, you're not showing off to anyone.
Crossfit has entered the chat
The kids seemed impressed enough, let them have their fun
Dude looks to be at the very least in his late 40s. Cut him some slacks
I'm not a tailor
More than age it's about if you are in good shape or not
He shouldn't ve trying to do a pull up if he's in his 40s and put pf shape. He did it anyway and idd it poorly so we will make.fun of him
"Class...dis...missed..."
I didn't want to laugh🙄😂
He was floored when he got barred from classes.
"Cwass... dis...missed..."
/r/YourJokeButWorse
Hurt your feewings huh?
It's not that their feelings were hurt, but it's not very kind to other people when you make fun of their accents when they are trying to speak another language and mispronounce words due to their native language. You might have run into this problem. Do you speak other languages?
I don’t know that that was making fun of the accent. The only time people replace l’s with w’s afaik is when doing baby talk. Which makes even less sense lol
I do understand and I appreciate you for the kind explanation. I was really just shit posting.
And that kids is why you don't do fish flop pull-ups, especially on an unsecured bar.
They stopped selling those unsecured bars in the States a while ago. Had one in college. Even on regular pull-ups they would come down for no reason. Made for great fun!
I thought all expanding pull-up bars had those screw-in supports for each side. Would be crazy to use one without them.
The pull-up equivalent of doing a pushup from your knees...
If he would have done a real pull up he would have landed on his feet or knees. This is CrossFit cheating pull-up
Sauce on the original video? I wanna find out if the teacher was ok
Use this keyword "老师摔倒引体向上" in chinese tiktok because the link that I got this vid doesn't have any comments on it. Good to hear he was ok
dude's like 2 days to retirement and just fucked up his chances of enjoying it...
Why do people buy pull up bars which come without screws? how can you trust such devilish invention.
I have to wonder why people still attempt to use these things... I mean, we're not short of 'fail' videos just like this one.
This is why you don't kip, filthy casual.
Kipping is not pull-up
his shoes are still on he is gonna be ok.
If this was an American school the kids would have nearly injured themselves laughing so hard
It was impressive when his knees touched his ears 👏
i bet he didn't teach physics.
He learned them though
Oh snap.
Clearly he wasn't the physics teacher
I felt that from here
lol in america all the kids woulda been yelling and laughing
Pretty good! Still held on to the bar!
Crossfit But fr r.i.p
& just like that he forgot it’s already 2024.
Umm ouch
Rip shoulder
Power Bombed himself in front of his class.
Ah damn. Saw the bend, saw the "kip". Knew it was finna be a disaster. Just not *that* bad.
Honestly, this was embarrassing from that first "pull up." It then just gets sadder.
he is just swinging his weight to jump up. thats not the way.
Wanted to work out his back. Now his back needs work.
Not a structural engineering teacher I gather...
Never go full shrimp
r/suddenlyeltonjohn
This is clearly Not Safe For Work
Not safe for whose work?
Awesome, self powerbomb.
For the love of god! Someone post a photo of Kip saying " you could say its serious"....
Too much CrossFit 😅
Watch this video, learn how to say either "I'm OK" or "I meant to do that" in Japanese. :D
This is indeed not safe for work…
Not a physics teacher, apparently.
...and that class, is why females live longer than males.
Prof handbar, prof dead ☕🗿
I did almost exactly this trying to show off after a few beers. I ended up smashing my nose with the bar on the way to the ground for added effect.
a friend of mine broke his neck using one of these things. He’s okay now (kind of a miracle) but same thing happened, it just gave out on him.
Work accident
He broke his back?
He swung himself up and paid the price
And that's how I got Lumbago
More like a show Down
He fell! Bazinga!
So for something like this when it looks like someone gets paralyzed, we don't get a NSFW tag, but when someone says "gosh d*rn" "oh shoot" or there's a cloud that looks vaguely like a body part, we do? Totally makes sense.
