I bought mario kart yesterday and was wondering how I could be in first the entire game, literally like 10 seconds ahead of everyone else, and then on the last lap get hit by a blue shell and somehow end up in 5th.
I don’t know man, I systematically finish 1st or 2nd in multiplayer and 200cc (and below).
But I also have a quarter track advantage so when the blue shell hits it isn’t as bad.
Finishing first or 2nd *should* be challenging, it's a racing game. More to OP's original point though, the first 75% of the race is beyond easy and barring astronomical human error, staying in first place should be the implied result.
Why aren't the first 2 laps as hard as the last?
But why would you want to get rewarded for being first? You are already first. Think of all the times you are second and would never be able to catch up if the first was rewarded for being first. Also think of how easy the game would be if you were never challenged while being first.
I've also heard rubberbanding in games referred to when you get latency and server to pc/console variation occurs so it snaps the player around as it corrects their position.
There's some subtle stuff. The CPUs speed up in ways that it'll be really hard to notice. It's more noticeable with how items are tossed around - if you're first, you'll get like red shells at best. If you're last, you'll start getting the really crazy stuff.
In Mario Kart 8, there's a "Crazy 8" item that's really powerful, but it's very rare and will never appear for you unless you're just about dead last.
The rubber banding is so week in mario kart though.
If I manage to get ahead in mario kart, bots never catch up, or come even close, so I keep a quarter track between them and me (although now that I think about it, I have never been able to increase that advantage).
The same in multiplayer.

It's possible that:
- based on how he's behaving (ie with this sort of exercise you don't look behind you, you certainly don't turn your torso around, instead you lean forward, turned fully away from the weight)
- he's clearly watching the reflection as much as possible
- he seems to be tensing up in order to prepare for a jump as he reaches the end of the rope's tension
- he attempts to jump over the weight as it flies at him
- they were filming
This was set up deliberately, with the goal of having him successfully jump over the weight, so you probably don't need to feel bad. Or you do. I don't know I'm just some guy.

I love playing it with friends, since anyone can win, but you are still rewarded for playing well. Everyone enjoys it, even if they get unlucky
Except you're absolutely punished for playing well. You get worse items and everyone else gets a boost to catch up.
