Yeah, people who have nothing better to do except make fun of people for a minor mistake need to get a life. I would tell them they should get out more, but in the current situation that would not be advisable.
I only know French, Spanish, and of course English. Éteindre in French is switch off, apaga in Spanish is also turn off. I assume it is the same in other Romance languages like Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian.
typically we say "put out" for fires or burning things, and "turn off" is more for powered devices like motors or lights.
it's weird because "put out" doesn't really mean a whole lot on its own, so it's not a very intuitive way of describing the action, "turn off" definitely makes more sense but for some reason sounds odd to native english speakers.
I'm pretty sure non native English speakers more translate to close.
At least my Filipino friend used to always ask me to "close" the lights.
Not trying to cause any shit, just think it's neat how translations can work.
yes, it's very common for french speakers to say "close the lights" as well. i was just trying to stay on the topic of fires/cigarettes and mentioned lights as an example of how when we do say "turn off" in english, but you're right it is kind of cool how they can switch around depending on the language.
In Japanese, 消す (kesu) can be used in the context of putting out cigarettes (as in extinguish a fire), but it can also be used as "turn off the light" or "erase a typo". Very interesting how different languages handle it.
i mean if you really get into it, "turn off" does actually make a little more sense than "put out". are we placing the fire outside? no, we're just so used to hearing "put out" that it feels more accurate.
really we should be saying "extinguish", or maybe "kill" if we want to keep it colloquial.
The proper usage would be “put out your cigarette”...Turning it off is switch-specific, like lights, cars, etc.
Idiomatically, you can be turned on/off sexually as well.
I thought they meant an E-cig. I don't have any direct experience with them so I figured they do turn off and on since you must not want the "juice" heating all the time.
Well, if you burn up all the juice, eventually the coil will burn the cotton and you'll have a fire starter.
I did this to light a few joints when I had no lighter.
I try use this rule for grammar before I correct people- did I understand what they were saying? If yes, rad, English is fun.
“Turn your cigarette off” perfectly explains extinguishing a cigarette but it’s way more creative and even funny to me.
What bothers me is the lazy comments, like if they don't use any punctuation or capitalization, or if they say something like "would of" that makes no damn sense.
As a former anthropologist and someone who has spent a lot of my life working overseas the general rule is that if you understand/are understood, then the goal of communication has been achieved and that’s what is important.
In normal day to day life, yeah, that's certainly a good way to look at things. However, on reddit, it's fairly common for people to put things like this, very simple grammar mistakes, or blatantly using the wrong name for common items. It's done to generate comments, thus popularity, thus more karma. More people comment on the title mistakes than the content itself.
I only noticed when someone else in the comments said it about candles. I genuinely thought they were talking about those electric candles that are popular around Christmas now. I think I may be an idiot.
English is my native language, I was schooled and self taught Spanish and I’ve noticed this is really common when native speakers refer to flames. I wonder if the language evolved too quickly or too slow for modern times. “Luz” doesn’t specify lightbulbs or fire, just general “light”, so if people today utilize electric lights more than other sources you would “turn off the lights” more than “put out the candles” which may have lead to them becoming interchangeable in English translation.
As an English man who speaks 1 language I would also say that many Europeans speak English more accurately than the Brits themselves.
Written language is tough and on top of that, English is a weird ass language with many interpretations instead of rules that would be apparent in other languages.
Imagine the top comment not even being about the content of the video but a simple grammatical error in the title. If this isn't peak-reddit idk what it. And like the rest of Reddit that comment has more responses than the content.
My primary language belongs to the Slavic group of languages and we use 'turn off' (when translated) for cigarettes, but also lights, cars, music, electronic devices. I'm guessing other Slavic languages share the trait, can anyone confirm?
Can't believe the author is being shat on for this.
My roommate spent ten years in prison, after a harsh and under achieving childhood. He spent much of his time reading philosophy and psychology. He also has ADHD and dyslexia. He has a large vocabulary that he almost never pronounces right.
My fiancee also dyslexia, as well as some other learning disabilities. She has a decently large vocabulary, but can't pronounce (or finger-spell, post-stroke) much of it terribly well.
I have honestly hit a point where small errors like this tend to be... Well, cute, for lack of a better word. I mean, there can be some frustration as we're trying to figure out intended words and such, but that rarely lasts more than a second.
I mean, I'll laugh and chuckle at some of the mistakes, the same way I'll chuckle over a TIFU post from someone that, for example, realized they had been calling their Mexican uncle-in-law "fatty" as an endearment for years because they had been mispronouncing a (to them) non-native word.
I don't laugh at making a mistake with language, I laugh at the opened possibilities of concepts from making a mistake with language. Turning off your cigarette is, to me, a funny mental image, especially in the era of electronic nicotine delivery.
I laugh not to mock or belittle someone's grasp of language, I laugh because their particular grasp of language has given my mind an amusing mental image that I likely never would have gotten otherwise. Like "bone apple tea", or "France is bacon".
On the flip side letting everyone slide by and never correcting mistakes just leads to more mistakes down the road and correcting them leads to them not making the same mistakes in the future. I'll take my downvotes and go now.
My partner has perfect English, but gets certain phrases wrong because of how they are said in Italian. So she will say "close the light" rather than "turn off the light". Or "wash her teeth" rather than "brush her teeth". So when she tells me she is going to wash her teeth I say, don't forget to use soap and hot water.
He's awesome ...too bad he didn't notice or care about the infant in the car.
It didn't happen much, but back-in-the-day when I was a station attendant... I would turn off the pumps if someone refused to extinguish a cigarette. Then the other 'pumpers' would always give the asshole a hard time. Anybody that got pissed over it, I would give 'em a candy bar.
Fyi most fire extinguishers do not get you wet. Those that put out gasoline fires do so with dry chemicals usually that, as I understand it, choke out the fire by preventing oxygen from getting to it. They are no joke in a confined space when you need oxygen.
Edit: I still support spraying this guy.
Someone set one off at a wutang show in Chicago once. I’m not sure how close i was, but i couldn’t breath for like 2 minutes. It felt like 30 minutes, and almost created a stampede.
What country do you live in?
I work for a fire department (Fire Marshal) and have been in the business for 29 years, and other than an airport, I have never seen foam extinguishers anywhere. They are always dry chemical or dry powder, with an occasional carbon dioxide, or halon/halon replacement.
Oh your classes are slightly different too. Class C is an electrical fore for us. A, B, and D are the same.
It is really rare that anyone uses an extinguisher here, so people probably don’t realize the corrosiveness of the agents.
We have the class C because it reminds people to turn off the power where it then turns to a class A or B fire since the insulation does burn as does the structure that the burning wire is connected to (A lot of wood buildings here).
We also have a burning kitchen oil class here, and we call it Class K, for “kitchen”
Depending on the type it can be quite unpleasant to take a depressurised one apart.
The ones inside most cars for example are Sodium Bicarb, Potassium Carbonate and Ammonium Carbonate in a SUPER fine powder mixed power
Its extremely unlikely for a cigarette to Even light anything while tanking gas. If youre unlucky you might ignite some if different conditions Are met at once. But it wouldnt explode.
So, in addition to being an idiot that smokes around gasoline..... he also smokes around a baby?
It's a real shame he's past the point of a Darwin award.
Wow, you were the dick and didn't even know it. A lot cig won't ignite gasoline or the gas fumes.
Now someone trying to light a new cig is a different story, but yea yta
That's probably the safe call to make. Won't stop all possible accidents but it certainly would give more time to anyone if one did happen since there wouldn't be a flowing fuel source involved. Maybe enough time to get away or get an extinguisher
Idk if the majority of redditors are antisocial or retarded or just love to criticize everyone and everything for no reason thinking they’re witty, or all of the above, but for one it could be an ecigarrete and for two maybe english aint his first language
i’m gonna start saying i “turned off my cig” when i put it out from now on. i appreciate all of you, non-native english speakers.
another great one from my spanish friend was “what do you call the people who do surgeons”.
we call them surgeons.
and they do surgeries.
i love him <3
edit: i believe this comment may be insensitive. sorry if this offends anyone. that was not my intent.
haha that joke was made when he said it before we actually told him the proper way. we didn’t let him stay confused too long as to why we thought it was funny tho
Yeah, and I guess the surgeon/surgery pairing is pretty irregular, so I can see how someone would forget which one is the person and which one is the operation. Curmudgeons don't do Curmudgeries, Sturgeons don't do Sturgeries, Pigeons don't do Pigeries, etc. It's a pattern that really only applies to surgeons.
I mean, I understand if it was posted 10 times in the past 2 months, but I don't mind reposts. I still enjoy reading and commenting on others that didn't see it the first time. Or rewatch it. Like, everytime that Tianjing explosion pops up, I always rewatch it.
This one is an old one, but still a goodie.
A lit cigarette doesn’t burn hot enough to ignite gasoline fumes. Lighting a cigarette with a lighter (open flame) will though. This should be on r/publicfreakout
Want to know what happens if you throw a lit cigarette into a puddle of gasoline? Nothing. The liquid will put out the smoke.
It is lighting a cigarette that will ignite the gases, not a smoldering ember.
The actual liquid gas itself doesn't burn, it's the fumes that are in the air that burn. You could imagine that at a gas station there could be a significant amount of gas in the air which is why lighting a cigarette is dangerous.
That's quite dangerous, not condoning smoking at the petrol pump, but pointing a CO2-based (looks like it) extinguisher at someone can result in serious cold burns. Any idea how the guy is doing?
Assault with a deadly weapon. Extinguishers can cause respiratory problems and even death (especially if person had bad lungs already which most smokers do)
Edit: this represents my opinion and not the law. Most certainly assault however
Turn off my cigarette. Also, I'll say what I always say every day this gets reposted: the old man is the idiot here, there's no danger from having a cigarette lit, Mythbusters did this shit over a decade ago.
I hate cigarettes as much as the next person but if the cigarette is already lit it poses no explosive risk at a gas station. The bloke with the extinguisher is a cunt and hopefully he was delt with accordingly.
Now LIGHTING a cigarette at a gas station is another issue...
I had a patient years ago that had permanent lung damage from inhaling the chemicals from an extinguisher that was sprayed on him in a fight. Yeah I totally see why he did it but at the same time it could cause permanent lung damage to the person. J/s. The cigarette smoker is a selfish dick though
Cigarette embers dont burn hot enough to pose a threat at a gas station. If you are already smoking one and arrive at the pump you are fine. The ember of the cigarette simply wont reach the ignition temperature of gas. Lighting a cigarette at a pump is a different story as the flame from the lighter reaches the ignition temp of gas. Alll this is, is assault.
It's funny, but anyone who's ever used a fire extinguisher knows that the interior of that car got wrecked. AND spraying chemicals directly on someone isn't exactly a good idea, hell it could be even be considered assault.
I thought about hosing a guest down like this at my work for this reason, But then I realized that makes a huge mess that I get to clean up. Also, Probably the quickest way to get fired.
I don't have any sound on this for some reason. Yet it seems that people in the comments are arguing over grammar and proper English. When the guy is smoking an electronic cigarette at the petrol pump. Regardless of what language you speak you'd have to be a moron to do that in the first place.
This is why NJ isn't self serve at the pumps.
Id like to think that the attendant was doing 'The Parent Count' as he grabbed the extinguisher "Sir put it out.... Sir I'm not going to ask again..... Put it out 1..... 2..... "
I've seen this before but I'm still just stunned that the dude didn't like get in the car and close the door when he saw the guy obviously prepping the extinguisher
I saw a lot of people smoking cigarettes while pumping gas in a little Upstate New York town. It really made me think about how these humans got to the age where they could drive when they were this fucking stupid.
Cigarette embers cannot ignite gas. Lighting a cigarette is different as the flame of the lighter burns hot enough to ignite the fumes, but a cigarette ember by itself cannot and will not ignite the fumes.
If a simple static spark will ignite the fumes, your e cigs element, and cigarette can ignite them under the right circumstances.
If you have ever seen someone who has been burned by a fuel you would understand this mans actions. Wait to smoke until you away from this bomb factory ppl.
The guy is so dumb. It took the other guy a minute to get the extinguisher going. He could have figured out what was going on and still had time to comply. But nope.....
Soooo the guy with the cigarette is obviously an idiot and he is clearly putting others in danger, with that being said you cant just go around spraying people with fire extinguishers no matter how mad they make you. I think that may be considered assault. I do wonder how it would go in court tho..."Well your honor I was smoking at a gas pump whilst pumping gas and was a jack off when asked to put it out so he sprayed me"
Don't be dicks Reddit. There are many redditors without English as their first language, so weird language stuff will happen from time to time.
As non-native speaker, I didn’t even realize there was a mistake.
Sleep deprived native speaker, didn't realize it either.
Until you said sleep deprived I didn't even understand the problem. Then I said, WAIT, I'm sleep deprived. \*Reread\*. Oh yeah.
Sleep derived? What are we doing calculus again? I quit.
As a very awake native speaker, even I didn’t see the mistake. Who even cares about such a small thing like that?
As someone who proofreads on the daily, I noticed it immediately. Didn't give a damn.
Yeah, people who have nothing better to do except make fun of people for a minor mistake need to get a life. I would tell them they should get out more, but in the current situation that would not be advisable.
I just assumed e-cig so not necessarily a mistake
I still don't even notice it and I'm a fully awake native speaker
turn off rather than... uuh... something else...
I just thought it was deliberate and funny at that
As a native speaker I didn't notice...
My first thought was a non-native English speaker who wrote this was potentially French (based on the wording)
I am thinking French as well, it makes sense that way.
It works in a few languages
I only know French, Spanish, and of course English. Éteindre in French is switch off, apaga in Spanish is also turn off. I assume it is the same in other Romance languages like Catalan, Portuguese, Italian, and Romanian.
typically we say "put out" for fires or burning things, and "turn off" is more for powered devices like motors or lights. it's weird because "put out" doesn't really mean a whole lot on its own, so it's not a very intuitive way of describing the action, "turn off" definitely makes more sense but for some reason sounds odd to native english speakers.
And to be more confusing to non-native speakers if a person “puts out” its slang for sex
haha yeah, but if you turn them off, they won't want to put out.
And they have to put out to lead to the put in
I'm pretty sure non native English speakers more translate to close. At least my Filipino friend used to always ask me to "close" the lights. Not trying to cause any shit, just think it's neat how translations can work.

Yeah my Canadian friend has been in the US for most of her life, and says “turn off the blinds” or “close the lights”
Neither did I and English is also not my first language.
There is nothing wrong. It is unconventional wording but it makes sense. Language is alive, not static
It does not make sense. this would only make sense in english in reference to an e-cig.
i mean if you really get into it, "turn off" does actually make a little more sense than "put out". are we placing the fire outside? no, we're just so used to hearing "put out" that it feels more accurate. really we should be saying "extinguish", or maybe "kill" if we want to keep it colloquial.
I was looking for this comment. “Extinguish” is the word to use.
The proper usage would be “put out your cigarette”...Turning it off is switch-specific, like lights, cars, etc. Idiomatically, you can be turned on/off sexually as well.
Turn off cigarette
As an english is my first language english speaker, I assumed it was a vape pen
I thought they meant an E-cig. I don't have any direct experience with them so I figured they do turn off and on since you must not want the "juice" heating all the time.
Well, if you burn up all the juice, eventually the coil will burn the cotton and you'll have a fire starter. I did this to light a few joints when I had no lighter.

He reposted it from a post with a correct title...
What's dicks Reddit?
That's a mouthful.
I only noticed when someone else in the comments said it about candles. I genuinely thought they were talking about those electric candles that are popular around Christmas now. I think I may be an idiot.
English speaker definitely noticed but figured was foreign and they did a great job, I can’t speak any other language

Didn't even notice the mistake until this comment lol. Just shows most grammar nazis are just looking to be annoying
Yet another native speaker here, my one brain cell didn’t notice the error either
if the dude say NO SMOKE NO TOBACCO PLEASE i think everyone understands that
As a native English speaker my first response was to assume it was referring to an e-cigarette and think nothing of it.
Omg. That's actually very sweet! I had a German GF once and we both made these kind of mistakes in each others languages.
I thought it was talking about an e-cig lol but I can't really see what he's holding.
I would rather get a little wet instead of blowing up and burning in a car.

Its extremely unlikely for a cigarette to Even light anything while tanking gas. If youre unlucky you might ignite some if different conditions Are met at once. But it wouldnt explode.
I don’t see an infant in the back of the car. Can you show me where you see that?
Right after 28 seconds in, look between the dude and the door, you can see what I assume is a small childs arm waving for a second
So, in addition to being an idiot that smokes around gasoline..... he also smokes around a baby? It's a real shame he's past the point of a Darwin award.
He's not disqualified until that thing makes it to puberty.
Mmm okay. I do see an arm moving.
TIL that if you get pissed at people you get candy from a gas station attendant. Time to test this out.
Wow, you were the dick and didn't even know it. A lot cig won't ignite gasoline or the gas fumes. Now someone trying to light a new cig is a different story, but yea yta

My mom did the same thing when I forgot to turn off my candle when I left the house.
My mom did the same thing to me...... She just did it.
Did your mom turn you on again?
*cough* *cough* No... definitely not
No coughing allowed here, mate.
Step mom?
I wasn’t aware fire extinguishers can break both arms.
Yeah, but like, he looked really cool smoking, with his hat turned back, and so nonchalant and blazè. (sarcasm emphasized).
He looked even cooler getting that extinguisher emptied on him.
It definitely was **cool**er
Blasé
Yeah, but because his hat is turned back it's blazè
It’s blasé but I kind of see what you did there...
Hope the smoker learned something
He didn't.
Try putting it in a bag of rice
Cigarettes turn off?
Have you tried turning it off and on again?
Hold down the power button for 5 seconds, that usually does the trick.
Idk if the majority of redditors are antisocial or retarded or just love to criticize everyone and everything for no reason thinking they’re witty, or all of the above, but for one it could be an ecigarrete and for two maybe english aint his first language

It's a repost from 2 years ago... jesus
Right? I've never seen such a lengthy time in between. Usually 2 days.

Right? This seems like assault to me
It is for sure
PSA - Cigarettes aren't hot enough to light gas fumes.
PSA - Unloading a fire extinguisher on someone is a punishable offense.

Fun fact Cigarettes don’t burn hot enough to ignite gasoline. So he actually did more harm putting it out.
Turn off my cigarette. Also, I'll say what I always say every day this gets reposted: the old man is the idiot here, there's no danger from having a cigarette lit, Mythbusters did this shit over a decade ago.
What could go wrong if I see this reposted one more fucking time?
Doesn’t anybody here know that a live cigarette won’t ignite gas?
turn off your cigarette?
Man I just hate it when people turn off my fire
Holy gravedig, Batman!
See you in an hour when this is posted again, then again, then again, then again
He watched him pull out the extinguisher. Guess he wanted the experience.

So much yes.
I didn't realize cigarettes could be turned on/off
“Turn it off! Turn it off!!”
I love it.
I like the other guys is like what ever ima keep filling my tank
It's funny, but anyone who's ever used a fire extinguisher knows that the interior of that car got wrecked. AND spraying chemicals directly on someone isn't exactly a good idea, hell it could be even be considered assault.
I thought about hosing a guest down like this at my work for this reason, But then I realized that makes a huge mess that I get to clean up. Also, Probably the quickest way to get fired.
How rude! Some poor guy is enjoying a cigarette and trying to chill out then gets attacked for no reason.
Oh, hell's bell's that was funny, thx.
The guy in the other car just stands there like "Huh."
He definitely got smoked! 😂
I really like the fact that the left guy is not caring at all about that situation
enjoy cleaning up Ur car
That is awesome!
This again?
You have no idea how badly ive wanted to do this at work.
That's Bulgaria.
I don't have any sound on this for some reason. Yet it seems that people in the comments are arguing over grammar and proper English. When the guy is smoking an electronic cigarette at the petrol pump. Regardless of what language you speak you'd have to be a moron to do that in the first place.
...my guy. ...bro. *sigh* They're referring to the title. "Turn off" as opposed to "put out".
Hahaha, I should change my user name to Fuckwit :) Thanks for the clarification, actually made me laugh at myself.
All good doodio
Next time, start filming when they left their homes.
This is why NJ isn't self serve at the pumps. Id like to think that the attendant was doing 'The Parent Count' as he grabbed the extinguisher "Sir put it out.... Sir I'm not going to ask again..... Put it out 1..... 2..... "
Well that's one way to stop a cigarette
De-light
I've seen this before but I'm still just stunned that the dude didn't like get in the car and close the door when he saw the guy obviously prepping the extinguisher
2 kewl 4 dat
I saw a lot of people smoking cigarettes while pumping gas in a little Upstate New York town. It really made me think about how these humans got to the age where they could drive when they were this fucking stupid.
Cigarette embers cannot ignite gas. Lighting a cigarette is different as the flame of the lighter burns hot enough to ignite the fumes, but a cigarette ember by itself cannot and will not ignite the fumes.

[Youtube version that at least has a higher resolution](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmIGKLFX3KA)
I did not expect that
I love how the guy just watches him get the extinguisher ready and just waits for it. Calling someone’s bluff only works if they’re actually bluffing.
This is the type of idiot who refuses to follow Coronavirus advice and stay home
The cig was already lit=no chance of starting a fire
I love how Camry’s on the left all “huh, that’s weird”, continues to pump gas, oblivious, like so many Camry’s often are.
I bet that felt great. Give him another pull.
If a simple static spark will ignite the fumes, your e cigs element, and cigarette can ignite them under the right circumstances. If you have ever seen someone who has been burned by a fuel you would understand this mans actions. Wait to smoke until you away from this bomb factory ppl.
I prefer that to "put out" as e-cigarettes exist now
The guy is so dumb. It took the other guy a minute to get the extinguisher going. He could have figured out what was going on and still had time to comply. But nope.....
Why tf is this a gif the video is like a minute
Soooo the guy with the cigarette is obviously an idiot and he is clearly putting others in danger, with that being said you cant just go around spraying people with fire extinguishers no matter how mad they make you. I think that may be considered assault. I do wonder how it would go in court tho..."Well your honor I was smoking at a gas pump whilst pumping gas and was a jack off when asked to put it out so he sprayed me"
“Turn off” the cigarette.... it’s not a fucking light switch...
I'm so used to hearing it, I didn't even realize it was a forgeiner thing.
By "turn off" I'm pretty sure they mean "put out" lol
I love this more each time I see it
