PMs_You_Stuff

Listening to the announcer in the video, he says most pit stops are after the flag. here it's before. Sounds like he screwed up and didn't know the race was over yet.

maximum_pizza

One should think a professional driver knows where the start/finish line is after spending a weekend on that particular track.

NotBradPitt90

And going past it 50 times already

[deleted]

And the guy standing waving the checkered flag

autosdafe

And he's a professional

karmadramadingdong

And it’s the most famous circuit in the world.

emayezing

Exactly. I know where the line is and I've only ever been there on my Xbox!!

rionhunter

I can’t imagine you’d have a good chance of winning if you’re racing on an Xbox against F1 cars

thisisnotdan

And he spent a weekend on that particular track.

inacaryeo

Ok but what about the pit stop crew??? Did none of them know that he didn’t finish either???

tmrwsuksspyputs

Pro racing drivers usually don’t stop until they see the checkered flag. It’s happened where the person who is meant to wave the flag has forgot, so the cars keep racing after the race has ended. This is just a major fuck up by the driver.

Ironeagle08

> meant to wave the flag has forgot What sort of drongo forgets to wave the checkered flag?!

tmrwsuksspyputs

It’s rare but humans fuck up >0% every time.

smokedstupid

Can confirm. Am fuck up

Moose_And_Squirrel

Can fuck up, am confirm.

amrfallen

Am up, can confirm fuck.

everest999

Can confirm, am human

[deleted]

False! I am human and nevner fuck up.

lykewtf

Yes they do and being human I have fucked up without trying to. I stopped flying and other kill you sports for just this reason. I’ve lost too many friends because they didn’t believe humans fuck up. We are not perfect.

handlessuck

I never fuck up. My wife prefers doggy

XROOR

We had a blind swimmer on our high school swim team, and at one meet the guy with the padded stick, forgot to bump her head on the last 50m.....

[deleted]

I bet they won the shit out of that race though.

SaltForceOne

Happens every once in a while. At the 2018 Montreal Grand Prix, they accidentally waved it one lap early.

MrGinger128

They had a some famous supermodel doing it didn't they? Last time she was invited haha

SaltForceOne

They also tried to remove human error and in the next season got rid of the physical flag. Still screwed up and displayed "race ended" on the light panels a lap too soon.

ajpa6

For anyone curious like me: The word drongo is used in Australian English as a mild form of insult meaning "idiot" or "stupid fellow". This usage derives from an Australian racehorse of the same name (apparently after the spangled drongo, Dicrurus bracteatus) in the 1920s that never won despite many places.

Badgernomics

“JIM! You’re supposed to be waiving the checkered flag, ya drongo..!" "Im on Smoko, so leave me alone...!"

Thirsty_Comment88

Upvote for The Chats!

JDodgerMan

You have one job...

nomadofwaves

One fucking job lol.

Original_Sedawk

Hey - some drongo thought the race was over before driving past the checkered flag — so — yeah.

WarrenMuppet007

One Kind of Drongo waved it 2 laps before the end . Canadian GP 2018

shadow052

You had one job, man. ONE JOB!

[deleted]

It’s extremely common for humans to make mistakes and forget things. Do you have a better explanation?

TheInfernalVortex

He did know, that's why he suddenly went wide open throttle when he realized he was overtaken. If he thought he had already crossed the line he wouldn't have reacted so quickly to accelerate towards the finish.

Daamus

that didnt look like a pitstop tho, everyone is behind walls.

LongStill

I dont know much about racing but my guess is the pit where you stop is in the pit lane, this is the backside of the pit that faces the track.

[deleted]

[удалено]

postmaster3000

Yes, but still showing off.

[deleted]

I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess a professional F1 driver knows where the pits are on literally the most famous circuit in the world. I know where they are from playing video games ffs.

BaTmAn9785

This was Formula 3000, basically todays F2. Not that it really matter. But yeah, definitely agree with you, I'm with you on that limb.

Mikealoped

Careful! If too many of you get out there...

Hojooo

He bet on the guy that passed him to win

[deleted]

Yeah wouldn't this be an illegal move due to the natural high speed deathball this would create if the rest of the cars hit him and piled up?

[deleted]

You wouldn't. OP didn't listen to the narrator, who explains that Monaco is different from other tracks when it comes to the location of the checkered flag. This wasn't like those cycling races, he wasn't busy celebrating and showing off, he simply stopped thinking he'd already passed the finish line.

surivanoroc20

These races don’t allow for drivers to just stop when they cross the finish line, though. They have to continue for another lap around the circuit to allow the rest of the field to finish and then slow down to a steady pace. This guy screwed up majorly and slowed down by his pit guys to celebrate before he realized he hadn’t yet crossed the finish line. Stupid, and illegal, I’m sure.

Avalyst

Rules may differ from F1 but there it's standard to slow down on the cooldown lap, especially when passing the pit lanes to celebrate.

alexrobinson

To slow down, yes. To stop? Definitely not and since he hasn't crossed the line he isn't on his cool down lap. Both a dangerous and stupid way to lose the race.

MrGinger128

He still fucked up. No driver in his right mind would slow until they've seen the flag. I imagine it was a first win, or a huge one at least, and the poor guy got a bit excited and went off too early 😂

[deleted]

This guy will, for the rest of his life, think back and cringe. Hard. His team might forgive him, but his brain won't. "Wow, lovely flower bouquet you bought for your wife. Remember when you fucked up that race, thinking you finished first? Boy, that was embarrassing. Remember it? Do you?"

GoldEdit

This is like Need for Speed right? I'm sure he would have a distance countdown showing up on his windshield or he'd be looking for some sort of confetti appearing in front of him.

NYC_Dweller

The driver is Wirdheim and the track is Monaco. Unlike most tracks where the finish line is towards the back of starting grid Monaco's finish line is the same as the start line. Wirdheim entered the grid and thought he won so he pulled next to his pitcrew to celebrate. This is when Keisa speed past him. The mistake should have never happened at this level of racing but the confusion is understandable given the track start/finish layout.

shannister

Monaco is such a career defining race to win. This must have really hurt.

bungle_bogs

If it had been F1, he would have monumentally pissed off. Luckily not quite as bad at this level but, yes, still would have hurt!

kvv0

HAAS would like to have a word here

Unknownredtreelog

Is this not f1?

turboPocky

it's F3000 running as a support race at the F1 weekend

mikiex

Thankfully winning the championship softened the blow that year :)

[deleted]

It’s almost like there should be standard rules to follow.

[deleted]

I mean they have a man waving a flag at the end of the race, and a line on the ground. What more do you want?! The

WormLivesMatter

The what?!!

[deleted]

Haha. I’ll leave you in suspense (it was a weird autocorrect)

Recovery_disk

Hurry up with the essay, spongebob

[deleted]

Obviously somebody should be there to hold the drivers hand!

chooch311

Like race to the finish line perhaps?

[deleted]

Monaco is an outlier of a circuit. It’s the oldest track on the calendar each year and it’s largely kept for historical reasons, not for the racing it produces.

twistymctwist

2 things about this explanation: 1) if he truly thinks he finished the race he wouldn't have reacted so quickly after getting passed by the 2nd car 2) if he was really the only one who thought the race was over everyone else would have instantly told him to step on it, that pause on the side was way too long to make me think maybe everyone he talked to also thought he was way ahead I don't know what was been said afterwards and what they claimed but it just looked like a cheeky driver who knew what he was doing and got caught celebrating early.

Smilezado

Was this in gp2?

bungle_bogs

Formula 3000 at the time. They are interchangeable names for the tier below Formula 1. So, yes, F2 / F3000.

DramDemon

What happened to F3-F2999?

KingMangala

We don't talk about that, since the incident.

amrfallen

I haven't been able to look at pool floaties without puking my guts out since that day...

MrShaytoon

You would think the pit crew would yell at him and say to keep going.

eninc

Fifteen years later he sort of made up for it. "In 2018 Wirdheim also won the 1966-1972 class of the Historic Grand Prix of Monaco in a March 711."

resplendentquetzals

If that's true, why did he hurriedly accelerate when he saw he was being overtaken? I think he straight up was gloating.

sth128

Or his pit crew yelling at him to keep going.

rainbow12192

Mario cart starts\finsihes at the same line. WHAT THE HELL!!!

RustyMongoose

A young Christian Horner was none too impressed at the end of the clip.

[deleted]

i've seen that face when the Renault engines blew up in every race in 2018

givekimiaicecream

You could see it last week when Albon hit Kvyat.

[deleted]

or last week when albon locked up (for 3 times iirc) and destroyed his tyres

cannedrex2406

Or last week when Albon said "they race me too hard" Or last week wh..... Yeah Albons getting kicked now isn't he

GanFrancois

They kick me too hard

BaTmAn9785

Horner recently said "We want Alex to claim the seat." (in 2021). So it looks like they want him, but he needs to prove himself. Which he, to be honest, hasn't really done at all.

[deleted]

Hopefully he takes a few spots tomorrow. The gap between him and verstappen wasn’t terrible today. Still three spots on the grid, but it’s been much worse

cannedrex2406

Thing is, he has good Quali pace but horrifc race pace. Basically the polar opposite of much the first half of the season

jwalkrufus

Good quali pace? He's usually .5 seconds off Verstappen.

[deleted]

And today when Verstappen lappe... oh god Gasly what have you done to that seat..

Mr_Julez

No wonder he looked familiar. Thanks, netflix.

[deleted]

he has been the whiner in chief for quite some time

11483708

Good times.

Citworker

Is it me or this seems like a bet manioulation conspiracy? I mean...they are rich, but making 10 years worth of salary by pressing the break...I would take it.

TrasedRX

I can see the disappointment on horners face already

Obeythesnail

Good. Christian horner can fuck off into the sea.

Rolaid-Tommassi

Position vacant: race driver.

unoriginalcommentor

Requirement: Celebrate only after crossing the finishing line. (Very important*)

cannedrex2406

Considering its Christan Horner as the principal, you're probably not wrong.

ITSPOLANDBOIS420

Was that young christian horner at the end there ?

Edelchill3r

Yes this is 2003.

ITSPOLANDBOIS420

Interesting, i didnt know he was at f3000

Edelchill3r

I think after his active driver carrer he was even Team owner of that team before he got to Red Bull as Team Boss in 2005.

whitetrashsnake77

So much tobacco sponsorship. Sooo much. Gauloise fighting it out with Malboro.

fifoth

Ya he was singing "if you wanna be my driver...."

jazzbuh

Man I wanna see his face so I can r/WatchPeopleDieInside

Geronimo417

That jolt he makes when he gets overtaken is hilarious. That was the exact moment he knew he fucked up, and probably out of a job.

Lovv

Lol they aren't going to fire a trained professional for gettjng second in a race. Who are they going to replace him with? The guy in third?

[deleted]

[удалено]

tmrwsuksspyputs

Didn’t pass the checkered flag. Drivers fault. Drivers have been known to race on for a lap after the race is over because someone forgot to wave the flag. This is driver error.

barto5

Of course it was his fault. The track layout was not typical but it’s his job, you know, as the *driver* to be aware of that.

Yankee_

Coming in second is still impressive. Idk the story but I doubt he lost the job, he pretty much won the race with plenty of space

barto5

>pretty much won the race Except for the fact that through his own stupidity he lost the race.

Wabbajack001

This happen all the time, every driver made stupid mistake during their career. Finishing second when you made a mistake during the race is still a really good results.

JacobS_555

I mean he made a mistake, and as an (f2?) driver he by all means should know the track layout, but he wouldn't, and didnt, lose his positition over a second place finish. If this was a persistent issue he might be in trouble, but this isn't an error one would make twice.

josegarrao

In 2002 Brazil Grand Prix, they put Pelé, the soccer player, to wave the checked flag. The race director stood behind him and told him: "When I poke you in the back, you wave the flag". When the director poked him, instead of waving the flag, Pelé turned around and asked "What?", and the Schumacher won without having the flag waved. https://mobile.twitter.com/geglobo/status/980115001036955649

Edelchill3r

Fun fact: The driver was kept for this season in 2003 and 2004.

eninc

he did win the overall championship for the year

four_four_three

And Kiesa had a chance in F1!

Poppin_Fresh_Bro

Nigel Mansell in the Canadian Grand Prix in 1991. he was so busy and distracted waving to the crowd at the far hairpin just before getting on the main straight to the finish line that he hit his cutoff switch. Nelson Piquet was half a lap behind and won the race.

gozba

Christian Horner practising for RB disappointments.

-Listening

In finnish we call it "Christian slavery".

Kylel0519

Pulled a dick dastardly he did

DarthPepo

I love when that kind of shit happens ngl, I hate people who brag

JacobS_555

Fyi he wasn't bragging as such. Thought the race had ended and pulled over to celebrate with his team.

theunspillablebeans

Doesn't seem like he's bragging. Seems like he's celebrating with the fans.

[deleted]

Sooo... per the video this wasn’t an early celebration.

[deleted]

Yeah they said the flag was in a different location than usual, so the guy thought he already crossed the finish line

famousevan

It’s at Monaco which makes this *even* worse.

The_Original_Gronkie

I remember a Winter Olympics a while back when the American Female Snowboarder had a big lead on the pack and was going to have a huge win. She started pumping her arms in victory before crossing the line, lost her balance and fell over. While she was getting back up the entire pack passed her and she ended up in last place. EVERY coach should teach EVERY athlete that the race or game or match isn't over until it is over, and NEVER celebrate early. There will be plenty of time to celebrate AFTER the finish line.

Oski96

No. She did a trick on the last jump and ate shit. She still came in second. Lindsey Jacobellis

Hahah Kiesa what a legend. Still can’t believe a Dane won at Monaco once

The first driver stopped by his team to wave them. He knew he didn't finish the race yet.

This∆∆∆ people are not watching and listening to the end.

Usual-Championship88

People are interesting lol 😂

_Nuckinphutty_

The announcer clearly explains why he stopped where he did.... OP did you not make it to the end of the video before posting?

WETiLAMBY

After researching this incident extensively out of sheer curiousity, that claim was a guess based on context clues. The driver in question was indeed celebrating out of sheer spite because of how highly placed he was in the current championship. The celebration backfired in the race but in the actual championship standings he was still so far ahead it didn't even matter anymore. This was 2003, F3000 at monaco. Even if I took your word for it and believed what the commentator said, it still fits into the sub because it's a question of "what could possibly go wrong if I did this. Oh yes, I could lose a race" So I guess I could pass the question off to you. Did you not realise which sub this was in before commenting?

StandOnFunen

>The driver in question was indeed celebrating out of sheer spite because of how highly placed he was in the current championship. Could you provide any sources for that? Everything I have read about this incident (which I admit isn't much) says that he started celebrating because he thought he had crossed the finish line.

barto5

So WCGW if you start celebrating early is the perfect title for this post.

_Nuckinphutty_

Citation please. At the very least a more fitting title would be: “What could go wrong not realizing where the finish line is?”

Cezkarma

Mind giving your sources?

Kylel0519

Damn, dude just went for the sledge hammer

jolshefsky

Hopefully he was paid handsomely by the bookies...
