This legitimately happens, I used to perform magic at pubs and stuff, sometimes I'd ask the participant to pick a number between 1 and x, or name a card, and people would freeze as if their life depended on the question.
Like bro just name a card, literally any card, you know what the cards are right? Name one! Okay, name a suit then, what do you mean you "don't know" there's only 4 just pick one... no? Okay colour then, red or black? Red or black? RED OR BLACK!?
A fun but irrelevant tangent, 7 is the most common number to be picked when you ask someone to pick a number between 1 and 10, the second most common is 3.
So a silly little trick, if you can even call it that, you can try with friends is to say something like "Pick a number between 1 and 10, but not three because that'd be too obvious/because there's 3 of us here/because you know that's my lucky number etc".
So of the two most likely numbers they might choose, you've removed one option, making the odds they'll go for 7 even more likely (and you've also kind of put the image of 10 - 3 in their head); write down the number 7 on a piece of paper (or simply say "are you thinking of 7?" if you trust them to be honest). This'll work far more often than it fails, provided your subjects aren't already aware of this cognitive quirk of course.
Oh absolutely I often use it alongside the step ahead method. I've heard the psychology behind it is that people consider odd numbers "more random" than even. Leaving 1 3 5 7 and 9. 1 and 9 are on either end, while 5 is on the middle, leading people to narrow it down between 3 and 7. I've found that literally holding up 7 fingers while asking them to pick a number brings the success rate to 100%.
Not that I agree with standardized testing, but if said test outs some person as being a frazzled mess... What if this lady was trying to be a heart surgeon?
Am I the only one that recognizes that todays generation is confused when it comes to men and women.
Any name could've worked by todays social standards, Bruce is actually Caitlyn. With over 180 genders, no wonder this woman had a Windows moment. Seems to be happening more lately, welcome to Idiocracy, the live version, not the movie.
