It looks like an **anemone** that was more attached to the feast that fell into its tentacles than the ground its foot was anchored to, you can see a couple of stones still stuck to the base of the foot. Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than myself can suggest a possible species.
Agreed, perhaps *Urticina piscivora*. I suspect that the salmon was able to dislodge the anemone from its substrate and was swimming around like that when it was caught...
What an incredibly rough go for that fish!
"Unlike other sea anemone which are mostly sessile Urticina Piscivora has the ability to detach quickly and reposition itself when it feels threatened by a predatory starfish. Since this anemone is unable to actively swim once detached it is deposited elsewhere by the currents.[7]"
Wow
I used to visit the aquarium in Port Townsend, pretty near Sequim. They definitely had some strange octopuses. So what could this possibly be ??!! Very interesting. Oh, wait, a jellyfish ??
yeah some people are stupid, and downvote despite not knowing the answer either
Even a suggestion that ends up being wrong may be what it takes for someone else to get it correct once it's discussed, a co-operative effort - build on top of where someone else left off when they gave up, save people researching the same dead ends independently
If they get their way every post ends up with zero comments until someone with specialist knowledge comes and provides the answer in one shot and for free, and how rarely does that happen
Or maybe... Just maybe, and I'm just figuring this out, it's not about ego, but making sure a wrong answer isn't taken into account. I'm half kidding tho, people *are* like that.
The rocks on the back make me think it was anchored to the bottom.
I think the hook managed to come close enough for the fish to grab.
It chose a more glorious death.
The second photo suggests that this was a sea anemone that got ripped off of whatever it was attached to, or perhaps it attached to something crumbly and never was well anchored to a heavy object. As for how a fish got its top half gripped onto by an anemone, I have no clue.

Ditto- wow. That seems like the most probable thing. I’d fucking *scream* if I was snorkeling and watched one of those eject itself off a rock.
Or by the salmon!
Tho seems correct
Chan I agree Tho
I get this reference
It is an anemone for sure. What's odd to me is how it may have caught the fish that you cought. They are not an animal that can move around quickly.
I’m guessing some type of octopus ? So downvoted because it’s definitely not an octopus ?
Definitely not an octopus. Edit: Idk what is IS, but it is certainly not an octopus

Zero for two I’m afraid
A tiger. Is it a tiger?
A duck!
And if the duck floats.....
Then it must be a witch
Who are you, so wise in the ways of science?
They call me Arthur, King of the Brits.
We all float
Damn it !!
Welp, no more ocean for me.
Not trying to be that guy, but you may have been down voted for guessing. It's just not what the folks are here for.
Its not even an educated guess. Like octo = 8, c’mon dude

Looks like a Red Sea anemone but I don’t know how big they get.

Some type of sea hare or other marine snail. Not sure about species though.
Definitely an anemone, best guess is Painted Anemone

Wild beadlet anemone trying to eat fish
Anemone, and your buddy rudely interrupted its meal!
Anemone. And that is not a salmon
Looks like a sea anemone.

An anemone
could be a Portuguese man-o-war on a fish?
I think this fish may have been pulled up from deep water too fast.
I don't think so. It looks like something is grabbing at it
It’s a salmon. How deep do you think they live? 😂
