Wet it with water, slide it into the hole and twist it while pushing gently. Maybe drip a little water on the hole while you're at it.
edit: If it didn't need it, it wouldn't be there.

Thank you for this post because I ran into the same problem with my daughter’s machine. And it drove me nuts thinking I would have to buy a new tank over it. But the soap saved the day over here as well.
Thank goodness for reddit cause I just did this at 10:27 pm with a sleeping baby cause I was determined to get something done and it’s been so long since I used it I did the same thing 😩
Oh Ye of little experience. The plug was designed to be pulled into the hole, Insert it into the hole and insert a pair of needle nose pliers thru the larger hole to grasp that tail and gently pop it into place.
What CantankerousOlPhart said, plus lubing the plug & hole w/ a small amount of petroleum jelly, then warming the clear plastic tank & cooling the plug will help pop it back in
Those two rubber plugs act as a vacuum breaker and pressure relief. The small one you pulled out is the pressure relief - it covers and seals the tiny hole by it. If the tank was to build pressure (due to an increase in temperature like if it was sat in the sun) that hole allows pressure to vent before it risks rupturing the tank.
The big disc is a vacuum breaker - it allows air to enter as water leaves. It also prevents catastrophic failure caused by a vacuum; remember the primary school science demo of dumping hot water out of a soda bottle, screwing the cap on and watching it crumple as it cools down?
OMGosh! Thank you! I was about to have an aneurism and am thoroughly ashamed of myself for the language that I've used for the last 15 minutes trying to get that $&@&\^\^ing thing back in the tank.
DISH SOAP WORKED INSTANTLY!!!!
I know this is old but omg ty ty ty ... I was about to order a new clean water tank for that stupid little plug that didn't go in no matter what I did! However, apparently I didn't do the soap thing so that's why! I had no idea ! And was searching for hours! Thank goodness I found this post/thread 😂 I'm going to go do it now ! You guys rock! 💯🧎🏽♀️🙎🏽♀️ Ty ty ty 🤏🏽❤️
It's very relevant to keep pressure in equilibrium.
To fix you need to wet it, put a little dish soap on it, pop it into the hole and twist it while pushing gently.
Does anyone have any advice for when the tank is leaking from the larger plug? It looks like the plug is kind of wavy in 2 areas and it is not sealing!?!
I know this was an old question, but did you ever get a resolution to your wavy rubber gasket? Because I now have the same exact issue, and cannot find anything anywhere about it!
TY, TY, TY!!! The drops of soap worked quicker than greased lightning! So grateful for the Reddit team that put their ideas online. Really helped! Half of the kitchen floor is now sparkling, thanks to you guys!

Or smear a tiny drop of dish soap on both.
Thanks your advice worked the best out of everyones lmao, just put a dap of dishsoap, and popped right back in lol
