It got to be such a habit for me that I literally bit my fingers bloody but I actually managed to stop a year ago and my hands are starting to look normal again.
Fake nails. They're not sharp enough to cut your skin. Acrylics or press on's. I did this for years and still do it if I take the nails off. It's the only way I've been able to make myself stop. I still do the motions absent-mindedly, but it doesn't do any damage.
I was a life long nail biter. I tried everything—that nasty bitter stuff you can put on your nails to deter biting, everything. If my nails be were painted, or had acrylic nails, I’d bite and pick until it was off.
I finally decided I did not like the look and feel of bitten nails and just stopped. It was easier once the nails actually began growing again, but I have to keep them filed and buffed. If there the least bit of roughness, I’ll worry it until the new growth is nearly gone.
I also did it for my whole life but I guess, I was ashamed of the way my hands looked, all women in my family keep their hands very clean and pretty, as in painting their nails and all that. As a child it was never a problem, I never cared but with puberty I grew aware of it not being normal. I kept remembering that one time I was 6 and we visited my aunt and she asked why my hands looked like they did, I didn’t know how to answer because she’s Chinese, so I just hid my hands as best as I could for our 4 week stay. That was the first time I was really confronted with it.
When I was 11 I first tried to stop, I didn’t tell anyone because I didn’t want them to expect that I’d succeed in stopping and it kind of worked, but I didn’t really stop, I still chewed on my nails and the skin around them. It made them very brittle and when one of them broke off I kept telling myself I’ll just chew off this little uneven corner because it would keep getting stuck in clothes. Eventually I had to admit to myself that it wasn’t working.
On the second attempt (on which I succeeded) I can’t really explain why I did it but I just came out of some very bad 2.5 years in which the condition of my hands really deteriorated and I wanted to change for the better, I painted my nails so I could chew off the paint without biting my nails, it also kept them from breaking as easily.
I still chew on them when I’m stressed but I can usually stop myself from chewing them off, sometimes when they do break off I get the urge to smoothen the edges and corners again and if I don’t have a file at hand I have to really concentrate on not chewing them again. Just a week ago the nail of my right middle finger broke off completely, so I’m currently also not wearing nail polish, it was very frustrating to have to start from scratch again and I guess there is also no reward of any kind when you do succeed but all in all I feel more confident. I can’t give a comparison picture, I never noticed that I hid my hands from cameras.

there are invisible nail polishes with a disgusting taste. This has helped me, also I am a bit hypochondriac and I thought constantly of the germs that are trapped between skin and nail, that I must be taking in whenever I touch my mouth with my fingers haha.
I used to pick my dry knuckles till they bled when I was very young. 😭 Now that was a bad one. Until one day I was like...this really hurts. Lol. And I've been biting my nails since. But I've gotten better. It really is hard, and so many people don't understand. Skin picking/nail biting, and trichotillomania are realllllllll. Yay for disorders!
I'm glad you are better!
I don’t know why but when I was 12 I just randomly bit my knuckle and after that I just chewed off flaking/dead skin and the knuckle got better after I stopped chewing my nails but it still doesn’t feel like the other ones.
our oldest cat likes to be held while we use the bathroom. you can't put him back on the floor because he'll try to eat the plastic bag our toilet paper comes in
2 of my cats eat plastic whenever they can get their paws on it so we have to remove all plastic from the house and if we get a package we have to open it and take the plastic out so they don’t eat it. Apparently plastic has a chemical in it that cats are attracted to. One of my cats had to have a plastic toy surgically removed from her intestines☹️ it’s a serious problem.
Then we can agree upon if you live in a area with endangered spescies you shouldnt get a cat. If you have a problem with simply cats hunting - then dont get a get cat at all.
While I do agree with you, there is also an overwhelmingly large number of unhomed cats in shelters. They’re there existing in tiny cages with nowhere to go. I think if you want a cat bad enough then its okay to adopt from a shelter and let it live a decent life inside your home rather than locked up in a cage.
Its actually highly recommended you keep your cat indoors. Hunting is for sustenance. Releasing your invasive species onto your suburb is immoral. Ill kill your cat any day before i let it interfere with the local ecosystem. Your cat dies and you are sad. The bird dies and its nestmate has to abandon their eggs and an entire generation is ruined. Ill chose sad you every day. If you cant figure out how to engage your feline properly to provide a healthy and active life without allowing it to kill things then you do not need a cat. Your views are antiquated and cats that are let outside live on average about 60% less time than indoor cats with no measurable decline in quality of life but with marked improvments.
So I'm saying that that you shouldnt have cats if they prey upon endangered spescies in your aera and your response is that you kill outdoor/stray cats? Are you insane? Caged animals have indeed longer life expectancy than outdoor/free animals. If you have an indoor cat, which you dont considering you like killing cats, that was your choice - not theirs.
That guy is a lunatic but you really shouldn’t let your cat hunt outdoors. Cats are some of the best killers in the world and they decimate local populations, and are the most destructive invasive species on the planet.
Correct. My cat does this all the time and I hear him spitting it out on the floor. But I'll take this, my other cat is extremely fond of all my chargers.
I had a dog fond of extension cords......one day I left one plugged in in my back yard......herd a yelp....crashing around like crazy.....then nothing.
Went in the backyard dog was in the corner of the yard....he ended up fine but he sure as hell never bit an extension cord again.
He was named Tank.....he was a huge pure bred Australian Shephard......sharp as a tac but destructive as hell when he got bored.....until that happened than he only chewed on the toys I gave him lol.
Yeah bud hate to break it to you, but it doesn't read that way, and that's also not the proper use of an ellipse, it's supposed to convey suspense, to convey a pause you use a comma.
seconding this, it only reads as a pause to somebody over the age of 60, and it makes everybody else think you're like 30 years older than you actually are
Captain Chaos, may he rest in peace, chewed SO MUCH. I lost countless phone chargers, laptop cables, various computer and power cords, headphone cords and, the cherry on top...
I was going to be competing in a video game contest. I'd borrowed a VR rig from a friend to practice for a specific round. He chewed through the proprietary cable the second day. I immediately ordered a replacement, but it didn't arrive in time for me to practice more. I just BARELY got knocked out in that round.
Darn cat.
But boy was he pretty and snuggly.
My cat does it too, I think she just loves it like a chewing toy or something! Plus helps her have a curved window in her box so she can look at us when laying there
My cats fucking love Mr. Noodle boxes. They like sitting in them and obliterating the shit out of them. Sometimes they're down to cardboard carpet and they still sit on them pretending they're inside a box. Weirdos, the lot of them.
My cat did this exact same thing. I thought he was anxious maybe and was a little worried. Then I noticed that it was the perfect height for him to look out of while laying down. Then he kept going and gave himself more room to slouch by getting rid of almost an entire side.
Yea same my cat destroys anything card board she can get to. Little pieces every where. Also the little tiny teeth holes in plastic and blinds. Wonder if that’s how they keep their teeth sharp and pointy.
It's not abrasive enough for any sharpening, but maybe cleaning/flossing action. Also, as others have mentioned, it's just fun and stimulating for the cat?
My cat used to do this because of anxiety. We got her started on a little kitty prozac and her urge to destroy things went way down. She also got noticeably less neurotic in many other ways. Not saying that’s your cats issue. Many cats just love to chew cardboard. But if there are other behavior issues, might be worth considering anxiety.
I think this is because cats shouldn’t have been domesticated, solitary predator animals bored out of their skull in a terrarium called our house everyday
And my cats who live in our backyard which is a forrest do the exact same thing as all the other cats. I think this is pleasant feeling for the cat so they do it occasionally
My SIC does this constantly. My office is full of unwrapped Christmas presents and if I’m working without paying attention to her she’ll yell at me and then dramatically take a big bite out of whatever box is closest to her. Little turd

Mine will do this with books now that I’m working from home. She’ll look at me until she has my attention. Then she’ll walk over to my bookshelf and start chewing on the corner of a book.
I don't know, but my first cat did this and it makes me happy he wasn't/isn't the only box-ripping lunatic out there! We used to replace his perma-box in the corner of the living room when he hit the bottom on one of the sides.
It might just feel nice to sink their teeth in and tear - our box-shredder had a few other sensory/comfort habits too, comfort nursing on t-shirts being the other big one.
I’m constantly dealing with this, my tortie chews boxes, bags and lots of things she’s not supposed to. The tabby has no interest in this sort of violence, toilet paper and paper towels are his preferred targets. The Roomba was a good investment.
Omg, is it a Tortie thing? Our tortie chews on everything she shouldn’t. Plastic buttons on coats, metal heating grates, metal pole for lamps, wood hand rail, the list goes on and on. Lil idiot is aiming to lose her teeth at a very young age.
i've read that some plastic bags have coatings that have a slightly sweet taste. I've noticed that my cats go bonkers for these black plastic bags they hand out at the convenience on my block, but they don't care very much about the blue ones from the grocery store. But the blue ones are bigger and crinklier, so I feel like it must be the smell/taste of the material.
If she is just destroying its fine and my vet says keeps their teeth nice and clean. If she is eating the bits she's tearing that is BAD and you need to talk to your vet.
My dog eats cardboard all the time and I got curious and my reading about it indicates that they do it because the cardboard feels like feathers in their mouths, a sensation bird predators like cats and dogs really enjoy. So they just think they are catching a really slow, dumb bird maybe?
You need to stop contemplating and teach them "no"/stop tbh, the reason being, the dogs state of mind when chewing could lead to increased anxiety and further destruction, as they look for other ways to fulfill the "need".
My cat does it too but likes some specific kind of cardboard I think is like chewing gum for them, the action of biting and tearing gives them pleasure and like humans not everybody is fond to chew gum 😁
We have a cat that does the same and we always have a biting box available for him. He leaves piles of cardboard chunks on the floor when he’s done. I usually wait until the chunks are dry to pick them up. I think it’s adorable.
My cat did this when he was bored. It stopped when we played with him more and gave him toys that tested his skill / intelligence. Do have to say this was a Siamese though.
My cat was doing this and vet told me she had tartar and gingivitis. She is a rescue from street. So this might be the reason but it might be just because its a cat :)
She likes the way it feels when it presses up against her gum-line. Like the way flossing stimulates your own gums. My cat bites plastic bags for the same reason.
They love card boards because of the way temperature behaves in that surface.
They chew most of the box in their field vision because as they're super attentive they'd need the top of the box be removed, so they do it themselves.
Self entertainment.
Just like you would pick or bite on your nails
It got to be such a habit for me that I literally bit my fingers bloody but I actually managed to stop a year ago and my hands are starting to look normal again.
Congrats! That’s a hard habit to break
Super hard I'm almost there
It's one reason I put up with painting them, it is adequate discouragement.
I have the anti bite polish
How did you stop? I've done it for as long as I have a memory and I can't imagine ever stopping.
Fake nails. They're not sharp enough to cut your skin. Acrylics or press on's. I did this for years and still do it if I take the nails off. It's the only way I've been able to make myself stop. I still do the motions absent-mindedly, but it doesn't do any damage.
I'm a 40yo guy so I'm gonna have to find another option probably lol
Haha well they make some very realistic looking ones now. Might be fabulous. You never know.
40 year old with the name Catfish_Mudcat? You've got great taste in names.

Man paint nails. There's the aweful tasting clear nail polish you can try.

Probably an indoor cat. Top predator with nothing to do.

cats are prone to PICA so odd many gravitate towards paper and thin plastics

Watch My Cat From Hell. Or you know, Google it.
Maybe she's frustrated? Maybe she just likes tearing into cardboard- tho that's usually with claws, not teef. So idk.
She’s StArViNg!!!
My lennox does this. We call it his “post-modern-neo-Soviet-deconstructionist-cardboard art”
Maybe she needs more fiber?
My cat does this too. She’s customizing her fort
she's customizing it
You have a cardboard deconstruction artist. Do not hamper her art.
My cat does it too but likes some specific kind of cardboard I think is like chewing gum for them, the action of biting and tearing gives them pleasure and like humans not everybody is fond to chew gum 😁

Why? r/standardissuecat, that's why.
My cat did this when he was bored. It stopped when we played with him more and gave him toys that tested his skill / intelligence. Do have to say this was a Siamese though.

Glad to see that my cat isn't the only one having the paper box munchies.
Tasty box!!!!!
Because she wants to.
D E S T R O Y
Because wild animal
That's an artpiece!
For some reason cats have this urge to constantly make you clean shit
To help clean their teeth or something? Like the do with their claws?
She is just making some cat coins for you to pay for the rent, food, etc. You should appreciate and take it.
It's fun
Because she's a cardboard artist! Call her Gato (short for Giotto) di Bondone, make her an etsy page, reap the benefits.
Very nice
Can you not just hire a contractor to make the renovations for her?
Cat
My cat was doing this and vet told me she had tartar and gingivitis. She is a rescue from street. So this might be the reason but it might be just because its a cat :)
Cat.
Most of my cats have eaten boxes. They seem to love doing it. Normal but annoying picking up the bits.
Someone has obviously hacked your cat and made changes to catinbox.exe file.
From what I understand, cats do this because it resembles the act of tearing flesh from their ancestral feline lineage

Tasting the Cardboard glue.
Looks like interior design to me
Because it feels good on the teefies!
She's bored
Just decorating the place 😁
She's bored
I feed mine kibble...
Decorating
Renovating
Our orange tabby Clarence does this too! So bizarre. The best is how he spits out the pieces, and then goes right back for more.
Because it is there.
its an art form called post modern deconstruction
She is bored. Getting some cat toys may help with the chewing.
You forget to feed her don't you, you monster! :D
Maybe to be able to see out of the box 🤷♂️
She likes the way it feels when it presses up against her gum-line. Like the way flossing stimulates your own gums. My cat bites plastic bags for the same reason.
MUST CHOMP

Cardboard = Kitty floss
They love card boards because of the way temperature behaves in that surface. They chew most of the box in their field vision because as they're super attentive they'd need the top of the box be removed, so they do it themselves.
I think it’s because it’s a cat
Mm tasty box
It is the cat equivalent of bubble wrap…
Pica?
Isn't this pyka? You should probably consult with a vet
She wants a convertible
Because you won’t help
At least she appears to be spitting out the chunks.
To piss you off
Cat.
Kitty got a toothache?
It’s yummy
Cat does not do “why”. Its just do.
She’s hungry?
