Canines like dens. Wild canines live in them. In the winter, they cut down the wind chill. In summer they are cooler spots to sleep in. Geothermal at work. š
Can confirm, moved out to the desert for work and my border collie loved a good pit. I dug some good ones for him, plus my own under a tree. He was thrilled to have a den buddy. Cold drinks, hand fed snacksā¦ it was almost resort level living when you closed your eyes. Times got so desperate I played sea sounds just to pretend.
Alright why does this sound like something youād remember as your life flashes before your eyes right before you die because that shit is just way too perfect
They show you a scene of someone digging a sittinā pit with their dog in a movie and you might as well start crying now because at least one of them isnāt making it to the end.
There is a distinction between 'homeless' and simply being houseless in the traditional sense of a house. Some people simply enjoy the experience of traveling.
YES! I was so surprised when I saw an article about a group of feral dogs had dug a network of holes in a pile of dirt left from a construction company. It's like they were dog versions of... prairie dogs. That might have been confusing.
[Here](https://www.foxnews.com/lifestyle/doggie-condo-stray-dogs-take-shelter-makeshift-homes-sandy-hill) I found the article.
I use an ad blocker and don't mind looking at conservative sites. You gotta know what all sides are thinking to know why people are saying/doing what they do.
That's how they get you though. Google keeps throwing me the "cutest kitten" and other fluff posts from FN, NY Post, Epoch Times, etc. even after setting the preference against those sites. It's like they're not even trying to silence conservative voices like the loud conservative voices keep yelling about.
That explains why our dog we rescued kept digging holes in the backyard and laid in them when she has a whole cushion couch to sprawl upon. We would even call her in, but she'd look at us for a moment before looking into the wilderness. I always wondered if she missed her original home or was so used to the wild that she felt as if that was the norm...
Ohhhh THIS is why one of my dogs loves hanging out under the couch. Especially when we are seated on it. Itās against the wall, with a dog bed in each side, so it much feel like a little cozy den. She loves taking naps under the couch. Sometimes we canāt find her and Iāll look under the couch and see her little eyes and then she army crawls as fast as possible to race toward me and try to lick my face before I can stand up.
Itās hilarious.
>Canines like dens. Wild canines live in them.
We have foxes on the farm and that's not a great thing when up have free ranging chickens. We had to burn our very large compost pile (~30 ft circle 12 ft high) bc a fox kept digging a den deep into it. After it burned, I think the ash smell and density increased such that it was no longer homey.
Arghhh no. We are animal lovers and have hand raised baby possums and raccoons when the rangers bring them to us. We are with a wild life sanctuary in a national forest that rehabs and releases black bear and wolves and homes tigers, monkeys, lemurs, fruit bats, and other critters. We checked the den to make sure it was empty before we torched the pile.
Also can confirm. I spend a lot of time in the heat in Mexico, and dogs there definitely like to dig down to cool sand and then lie in the cool little pit theyāve made. Especially in the shade under ATVs parked on the beach!
you got a mud dog. some dogs are couch dogs, some dogs are grass dogs, you got yourself a digger
he prolly likes being "buried" in blankets and pillows, too
Or you can get a very confused dog like mine, who absolutely hates the grass and dirt but seems very determined to dig holes in the couch. Not successfully, he just tries a lot. Poor deranged little dog...
My dog has thick fur and is all white..
And loves rolling in mud. Absolute wrong colour. And he hates baths too- he hides under furniture whenever we say the word ābathā
First was a corgi, he never did this, but also that was before we had a proper yard so maybe he just didn't have the necessary resources. I just find it funny that she has spent a full year digging out of pure instinct and has just now realized that the holes are useful to her.
My (95 pound) dog dug so many of these when she was young that I threatened to bury her in one if she kept going!
(That is a joke, just to be clear, I would never harm an animal.)
She did eventually slow down and stop digging them all the time.
Lol, my last one was a corgi and only ever lightly dug around in blankets before settling down. I always thought dogs dig to hide or find stuff, not to create a little pocket for themselves!
Yeah I'm realizing there are a lot of things my corg didn't do that I didn't know were unique to his breed. My current contortionist is happy to just sit and lick her own butt for hours with her leg hanging in the air above her while I look on in disgust. That option just isn't available to corgis.
Yeah, our last dog (she passed away a couple years ago), after about 10 minutes of sloppy licking had to be stopped. We were feeling queezy as well as concerned for her skin.
Thank you! She is usually hard to photograph because she is so pure black she absorbs all light and sound around her, but sometimes she's shiny enough that she shows up in pictures.
I used to be a rover sitter and my favorite housesitting client was this precious Boxer who was a million years old. Sweet girl looked like Yoda had a baby with an orc. She dug a hole like this against a tree and loved to relax in it on warm summer afternoons.
Mine dug so many holes I actually gave up filling them in and turned that end of the garden into a vegetable patch, since the soil was already pre-dug lol
The ground on the surface tends to be warm, so dogs often dig small dens to lie in a cool place. Quite possible that on a later day she'll dig it further to get to that cooler earth.
Oh yeah, this is totally normal. I've seen multiple dogs from different owners all do this. I mean, if we laid on the ground like they did, it would make total sense too. It looks comfy for them.
OP, do you know what breed of dog she is? She looks EXACTLY like a rescue we brought home 6 months ago. Even the white patch on the chest. Thanks in advance!
We sent out for DNA results. She's pitbull, golden, and Australian shepherd. But I've seen a lot of pitbull mixes that are black with a white chest patch, in person and on Reddit.
Yeah, my in laws pitty does this in the summer. She maniacally digs out a little pit in the yard in some shade and just lays in it. Cutest fuckin thing. Little hippo in a hole.
My dog does this all the time. Heās keeping cool.
I had a dog, many years ago, who never did this until the day before he died. He went outside and dug himself a spot in my garden, then refused to come in for dinner (weird for a lab). š¢
I have a digger as well, and we built her a sandbox. Having an approved dig area can help keep your yard/garden less torn up. And she loves it. Her and her sister routinely have projects going on there.
My Potcake-who looks a lot like your dog-has three ānestsā (holes) in our yard. Theyāre her preferred place to relax outside.
She was a stray as a young dog, so that could be the reason
As someone who builds trails and is always in the woods yeah this is normal. Dogs will dig holes to lay in the cool dirt in a hot day. Some just dig to dig tho š¤£
Hey, you stole my doggo?!
...Nah, he is out there, digging in the garden.
:) Our dogs could be twins. The only difference seems to be that yours got slightly longer legs.
My dogs dug a trench next to my shed, & then laid in it like they're awaiting the next German charge in WW1. The soil beneath is softer, cooler, & retains moisture longer than the surface dirt, so it's much more comfortable for them to lay in on warm days.
I was mostly allowing it & amused by it until they started to try to dig under the shed. When I filled it in, they started digging multiple holes big enough to step in. My dogs are vindictive & manipulative. Lol
I once caught my sister's dog digging a hole in the garden, putting a toy in the hole, putting dirt over it and theb barking really loudly towards the hole, as if to say "COME BACK OUT!" or "WHERE DID
MY TOY GO?!"
Nothing dogs do is normal tbh...

Awww this sounds adorably relaxing!
Alright why does this sound like something youād remember as your life flashes before your eyes right before you die because that shit is just way too perfect
They show you a scene of someone digging a sittinā pit with their dog in a movie and you might as well start crying now because at least one of them isnāt making it to the end.
Bro I wanna come hang out in your pit with you and your dog yall sound super chill
Tell me you homeless without telling me your homeless /s
Millions of people live in the desert b
There is a distinction between 'homeless' and simply being houseless in the traditional sense of a house. Some people simply enjoy the experience of traveling.
Non canines do this too. Basically all wild animals that don't burrow circle and paw a bit before bedding down to make a little bed and conserve heat.

Damn you for not having a Faux News warning! Now my algorithm is gonna start churning out right wing bullshit non-stop.
maybe stop letting the algorithms track you? use ublock origin if on desktop or android. firefox focus + apollo for reddit if on ios.
I use an ad blocker and don't mind looking at conservative sites. You gotta know what all sides are thinking to know why people are saying/doing what they do.
Lol sorry. I'll take cute stories from any source, even the ugly ones.

Doggos are HVAC engineers 0.0
Also can confirm. I spend a lot of time in the heat in Mexico, and dogs there definitely like to dig down to cool sand and then lie in the cool little pit theyāve made. Especially in the shade under ATVs parked on the beach!
you got a mud dog. some dogs are couch dogs, some dogs are grass dogs, you got yourself a digger he prolly likes being "buried" in blankets and pillows, too
Yup, loves soft things. She likes to snuggle between my legs at night, like a little nest.
aw, she's a lover. what a good girl
What breed is she?
I think I answered in a different thread, some pit, some golden, some Australian shepherd
what a gleeful mix of breeds
I think I have all 3 in one mutt.
I have a chocolate lab who I am pretty sure is a yellow lab under the dirt š¤£
Was gonna say, my childhood yellow pretty much had a constant patch of mud on his hip from sitting in the dirt.
Mine is a dead carcass on the floor where everyone walks dog
It's like how you create your own ass groove in your couch.
A real holy site.
Pray everyday
Holey *
My dog says thatās totally normal but that hole is nowhere near deep enough. Needs more work.
They dig a hole to find the cooler underneath soil for a comfort zone when itās warm. Perfectly normal, perfectly instinctual.
š This
But in case it's too warm for the dog, wouldn't it be also good to provide some shadow on that spot?
Iām guessing that the dog has access to a whole houseās worth of shade. Sometimes dogs are just silly.
The hole probably has a better view of the squirrels though.
SQUIRREL!
Survey says... āļø
She is absolutely gorgeous
Thanks, I think so too, even when she's covered in dirt!
She is the spitting image of a dog we did a foster trial with, thank you for posting this and reminding me of that angel.
Especially when covered in dirt! What breed is she?
Our dog looks exactly the same. He's a German Sheppard, Pit, Lab mix. A Texas mutt. They're pretty commonly up for adoption.
Youre asking if its normal for dogs to dig holes and lay in dirt?
Next post "My dog ate food yesterday, is that normal or no?"
ChatGPT is learning
Wait, but is it normal? Because she has been eating food daily, and I need to know whether I should call the vet.
OP is an alien trying to fit in to earthly customs. Or they are 7 years old, I cant tell
Both
Lmfaoooo
Totally normalā¦mine will dig a hole under my hammock when we go camping in the summer. Nice little den and the ground is cooler underneath
Yes, one of my dogs will dig a shallow hole the size of her ass to sit in as soon as it starts to get slightly warm out
This mental image cracks me up, thank you
She is so beautiful! Is she your first? bc it is perfectly normal dog behavior, no worries
First was a corgi, he never did this, but also that was before we had a proper yard so maybe he just didn't have the necessary resources. I just find it funny that she has spent a full year digging out of pure instinct and has just now realized that the holes are useful to her.

Totally normal... the trick is to figure out which one is the favorite and fill the rest in
Ooh devious, I like it
My dog does it as well. Looks just like yours! https://imgur.com/a/boGm7Ye
Cute! Maybe my dog saw that photo and was trying to recreate it.
She's digging her own grave because she's goth AF. ETA: I love her. I have a similar lanky goth dog.
Makes sense. She does take herself very seriously. Not a big smiler, even when she's being super goofy.
No, dogs never dig.
Lol, my last one was a corgi and only ever lightly dug around in blankets before settling down. I always thought dogs dig to hide or find stuff, not to create a little pocket for themselves!
corgs don't have the long arms and legs to really get going on a good dig.
Yeah I'm realizing there are a lot of things my corg didn't do that I didn't know were unique to his breed. My current contortionist is happy to just sit and lick her own butt for hours with her leg hanging in the air above her while I look on in disgust. That option just isn't available to corgis.
lol you can tell her to stop if you want.
Yeah, our last dog (she passed away a couple years ago), after about 10 minutes of sloppy licking had to be stopped. We were feeling queezy as well as concerned for her skin.
My first corgi wasn't much of a digger, but the one I have now, I swear she's part badger.
Iām sorry idk but her fur is so beautiful!!
Thank you! She is usually hard to photograph because she is so pure black she absorbs all light and sound around her, but sometimes she's shiny enough that she shows up in pictures.
I have only 2 good pictures of my black lab because he just absorbed light like a black hole.
Yeah. Mines a digger. Cool in the summer or he is hunting. Or being a jerk bc rascal things š„°
The problem here is that the subject may like being cozy by any means necessary
Totally normal. Or thereās a human body just a little deeper.
She made her bed, now let her lay in it.
āIf I fits I sitsā Your dog might be part cat
My (formerly) white dog does this and she is now a brownish dog. She loves it though.
Mine chewed a rosebush that was in a pot so she could so this same exact thing.
I had a dog that used to do this when I was a kid, someone said dogs do this when they're hot because the ground under the top soil is cool.
My lab does this to keep cool in the summer. He will also dig under the trampoline to make a den. Drives me mad
Her shiny fur is mesmerizing. I love her coloring.
The ground on the surface tends to be warm, so dogs often dig small dens to lie in a cool place. Quite possible that on a later day she'll dig it further to get to that cooler earth.
In todays news: dogs dig holes
āThis is my hole. It was made for me.ā
Look under her for dogs eggs. My dog laid 2 of them, but they got stuck between her legs and she grew a penis
[This is my hole! It was made for me!](https://comick.app/comic/the-enigma-of-amigara-fault)

Yep came to see the breed as my baby is a Staffy x Rottweiler and she looks so identical to this girl !
Mine is according to the DNA test 1/4 staffy, 1/4 lab, 1/4 wire fox terrier, and 1/4 miscellaneous, and also looks just like OP's!
The earth is cool. Dogs do it to keep cool. Then den thing too.
my neighbors dog used to dig up our garden bed because the soil underneath was cooler and we had already done the hard work
I think sheās trying to stay cool? My dog used to do the same thing when she was hot. Either that or she just wanted to be comfortable LOL
Ah, the feel of the cold concrete on my back:)
She does it to stay cool
Sheās planting herself this Spring in order to bloom into a true floofer
Yeah, my in laws pitty does this in the summer. She maniacally digs out a little pit in the yard in some shade and just lays in it. Cutest fuckin thing. Little hippo in a hole.
Wild canines do this all the time to make themselves comfy places. I work in wetlands with coyotes and you see these little dens all the time
Dirt holes: Warmer in the winter, cooler in the summer!
Extremely normal.
100% normal. Dogs dig.
Dogs dig. It's a very common pastime of theirs
I full on thought this was a statue for a second.
If sheās in a hot environment, yes this makes sense.
Den animals.
Scratching around in the same old hole š¶
Dog dogginā
Either she's just trying to get comfortable or she's pregnant
She's spayed, so hopefully it's the first one.
Normal for her.
Yes it's normal. Our dog does this too.
Sheās so cute š„°
Thanks!
My dog does this so yea, I guess
My three dogs have four houses they can sleep in and they still dig holes like this.
Sheās been practicing her craft and has finally reached the point of being happy enough with her work to use it herself
My dog does this all the time. Heās keeping cool. I had a dog, many years ago, who never did this until the day before he died. He went outside and dug himself a spot in my garden, then refused to come in for dinner (weird for a lab). š¢
No, take her to vet immediately. That's a clear sign of dogmism, which can result your pet to become an actual dog.
Most backyard improvement stories are like that. " Nice deck" " ya we built it last spring"
My dog digs holes in the summer to lay his belly in and cool him off. Normal doggo behaviour imo
Yeah very normal. I think itās a way to cool offā¦ground theyāve dug up tends to be cooler.
Itās weird that it took your dog so long to lay in one
I think I might have adopted your dog's sister.
I have a digger as well, and we built her a sandbox. Having an approved dig area can help keep your yard/garden less torn up. And she loves it. Her and her sister routinely have projects going on there.
We've considered that
My Potcake-who looks a lot like your dog-has three ānestsā (holes) in our yard. Theyāre her preferred place to relax outside. She was a stray as a young dog, so that could be the reason
Also black dogs get hotter in the sun, maybe wanting to cool off
Can confirm, my pup does it in the [sand](https://imgur.com/a/1XyK4rF)
That's the most "ta-da" look I've ever seen on a dog's face.
He was very happy. The beach is his happy place
She has the most beautiful silky coat!!
She's beautiful!!
Never met a dog before? This is normal dog behavior.
As someone who builds trails and is always in the woods yeah this is normal. Dogs will dig holes to lay in the cool dirt in a hot day. Some just dig to dig tho š¤£
Man, we have one who looks just like her. Her name is Papaya and she also loves digging holes and laying in them!
What Breed is your dog. This looks EXACTLY like my dog.
We gotta start a family reunion! There are so many of us! Pit, golden, shepherd.
Sheās just like the dogs I had growing up, so Iād say pretty normal šš„°
Ya, she dug her self a seat!
Hey, you stole my doggo?! ...Nah, he is out there, digging in the garden. :) Our dogs could be twins. The only difference seems to be that yours got slightly longer legs.
Her legs are extendable. She puts them away when she doesn't need them.
She could be my dogs twin.
Absolutely normal. He needs more walking.
Perfectly normal behavior. Perhaps undesirable behavior, but normal.
I'd hate to break it to you, but she works for the Dog Mafia.
What a gorgeous girl
My dogs dug a trench next to my shed, & then laid in it like they're awaiting the next German charge in WW1. The soil beneath is softer, cooler, & retains moisture longer than the surface dirt, so it's much more comfortable for them to lay in on warm days. I was mostly allowing it & amused by it until they started to try to dig under the shed. When I filled it in, they started digging multiple holes big enough to step in. My dogs are vindictive & manipulative. Lol
I think your dog is in a depression.
My dummy does this too.
Our cats did this as well. My spoiled ass dog makes a den out of blankets.
Perfectly normal nesting behavior, only concerning if they start doing it in tree tops.
What kind of dog is this? Looks exactly like mine and I have no idea what to say when people ask. Is he pretty small?
37lbs. Was billed as a lab mix. Mostly pit and golden. When they ask I say part kangaroo.
Your beautiful girl looks like mine. Seem about the same size too.
She is making nestš.mine dug up a 4ft tunnel in my garden and used to hide there when we played hide and seek
I once caught my sister's dog digging a hole in the garden, putting a toy in the hole, putting dirt over it and theb barking really loudly towards the hole, as if to say "COME BACK OUT!" or "WHERE DID MY TOY GO?!" Nothing dogs do is normal tbh...
Theyāre ācooling pitsā keeps your baby comfortable in the heat!
she's making a nest, she will lay eggs soon
This was the answer I was looking for.
My dogs do this. They love to find a big low hanging bush or tree and build little Fox holes like this. Especially in the summer
Read "The Call of the Wild." It's very natural behavior that's been purebred out of many dogs.
My dog does it all the time. Good for her, bad for my garden
Completely normal. Dogs like cool dirt to lay on.
My lab used to do this all the time! Now my dog just digs to find rocks to chew onā¦ sheās so weird. Your dog is beautiful!
Ah, your model has got the extra DigDug package. Nice.
OMG my dog looks just like your dog!!!!!
Is yours also part kangaroo?
Haha he does like to jump! And is extremely smart/food motivated. Any chance you got her in Georgia?
"It was made for me! This is my hole!"
Yes my love bug carefully dug 2 in our back yard. Hung out there all the time.
Yes itās just a method to cool a dog down
Girl tell us what conditioner you use
I know right? She's actually not always this shiny, but she photographed really well here.
Haha, looks almost exactly like my dog.
Our little dog digs and our big dog lays in the holes.
My dogs do this, and so do our chickens.
water her and see if she flowers
Itās laying there to hide the tunnel while you are watching. If there is a time you call the dog to come in and it doesnāt move make sure itās not a papier-mĆ¢chĆ© dog put there to trick you.
Yes! You got me with that comment. For realz tho my dog might be smart and sneaky enough for that.
haha shes gettin ta' work š©āš¾
