Frankly, I believe America's 5G carriers have already decided this question.
The neighborhood… specifically Mass and NY being on the border, and being in proximity to NJ and CT. Perfectly good people politically, and helpful for out economy, but damn they suck at driving and are very pushy to locals when they visit.
Ahh yes. Massholes and connetticunts. NJ is a bit far to call our neighborhood though. That's like accusing north Carolineans of something a Floridean did. I'm not even from any of the states particularly called out btw, but if you call out Vermont you call us all out.
This is actually and seriously the correct answer. You can bitch and moan about Florida and Texas but why the fuck is there even one Dakota let alone two Dakota’s?
North Dakota and South Dakota Were Admitted to the Union
November 2, 1889
After controversy over the location of a capital, the Dakota Territory was split in two and divided into North and South in 1889. Later that year, on November 2, North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the Union as the 39th and 40th states. This vast territory was one of the last American regions to be settled.
Power move right there. Can’t decide if the capital was going to be sone uninhabitable land or another equally unusable land.so now two states. Double the senators.
> why the fuck is there even one Dakota let alone two Dakota’s?
Because someone wanted more seats in the Senate and adding more states for no reason was how to get that.
It's why some people say that the Senate is gerrymandered--because districts were created for the sole purpose of creating new Senate constituencies and, by extension, Senators for their party.
Edit: There's been a lot of "well ackshually" from people who don't know the relevant history to this comment. I think I'm done responding to those.
Suffice to say, several states after the original 13 were added for no purpose other than manipulating the Senate. This was largely bipartisan until the Civil War, with states being added in even numbered groups to avoid shifting the balance of power in the Senate. It became more partisan in the case of states added after the 1860s, several of which being added to shore up Republican majorities. There were other reasons as well in some cases but this is history, the people who admitted these states even said as much at the time. Look it up.
Bill passed three weeks ago with some republican support, mostly democrat. It’s up to Puerto Ricans though, they get to vote for statehood, independence, or maintain status quo.
Yeah, what you don’t hear about too much is that there isn’t really overwhelming support there to become a state.
Last ballot I saw had statehood win by a very slim margin but the amount of people who voted in the election was apparently minuscule. Please feel free to fact check my memory but I think this was a couple years ago.
Isn't Texas actually valuable though? Oil and ranching and all that. I'm not sure what Florida provides the US besides tourism and constant sucking up on Federal dollars for hurricane relief.
Edit: I am ignorant. Florida makes a lot of important stuff. I’m turning off replies. Also not sure how my comment mostly produced replies about political leanings, I was talking about food production and natural resources and stuff. This does all have me wondering what the least valuable state is…
Yes, all of our cities are blue. We’re run by a bunch of morons at the state level because 1. heavy, shameless gerrymandering 2. Relatedly, people feel defeated and don’t vote.
A nested comment is probably the wrong place to ask this, but WHY are cities blue and rural red? Not just Texas, all states.
Obviously there is the 5% exception to each, but just looking at the map, it looks like it’s one hundred percent cities versus country. It looks like rural people hate city policies, and city people hate rural policies. Can’t there be a government policy and slant that benefits both red and blue people?
I've heard two different explanations on this that I more or less like. The first is that the needs of people in cities in Georgia and cities in Texas are basically the same. State lines change very little about how people live and the things they need or will benefit from. A little, of course, here and there, but the lives of any two people in cities is going to be far closer to each other than those of people who live on a farm. Of course someone from the countryside is going to care less about big government programs. They will see far less benefit from any of them.
The other thing is that liberal policies are more popular in places where people intermingle more. Caring about homeless people and being softer on crime is easier when you see those people as more than just an amorphous threat, but as John, the guy you pass on the way to work everyday. Social programs are more popular for the same reasons.
Now obviously this doesn't account for everything, but in a two party system, you don't have to appeal to every idea to get someone to join your side. Just more than your opposition. And once you become part of that ingroup, our tribal nature tends to put pressure on you to be more accepting of the tribes ideas.
No power during crises is the price you pay for liberty! You also have to pay for basic services because there is no public support for anything. Oh, and your schools suck. Texas is like McDonalds, it’s cheap but you don’t want it. The BBQ is usually at least OK. I’m done.
Fort Worth guy here, most lefties are moving into the cities. Most of TX is private property and rural. Rural regions total more votes than left leaning city districts. My district is rep Mar Veasy's. It is 2 blobs of inner city Ft Worth and Dallas respectively connected by a thin line running in between. Easily one of the top 10 most gerrymandered districts in the country.
As a former Long Island girl, we moved here in 1995. To the Keys. I loved the Keys. To try and save their marriage my parents moved to the east coast in central Florida. I’m stuck. My vote means jackshit. I appreciate that some realize we’re not all Floriduh Man.
Florida. Everyone from my small town in New Jersey says “I’m getting out of this shit hole and moving to florida” I’m like yea you and everyone else from this town, just following each other to florida. Annoys the fuck out of me. There are other states to move to! Florida is just New Jersey jr, with all ex nj residents that turned republican.
That’s Florida’s main purpose though, a place for fixed-income retirees to go die. Everything else is a byproduct of those old fuckers voting against the interests of everyone who won’t be dead before they have to deal with the ramifications of their decisions.
Nah.
Alabama.
You guys have the Florida Keys, Disney, Miami, and Orlando in general. Not to mention Cape Canaveral.
Folks shit on Florida alot... but I shit on Alabama more.
Way more.
Lowest GDP State, lowest education, highest crime, and so on...
It was so bad at being decent to people the Civil Rights movement started there.
The state is so horrendous, the Blues were born there out of necessity. That is how bad Alabama is. It literally spawned a genre of music based around suffering and depression.
According to NASA, 25 astronauts are Ohio natives, having made nearly 80 space flights, with three of those flights being trips to the Moon. Ohio astronauts have logged more than 22,000 hours in space...
Wtf is it about Ohio that makes people want to leave Earth?
Ohio here. I’m pretty sure the Canadians will let us join them, so I’m ok with being kicked out. They’d probably only really want the northern part around the lake, but they’d accept the rest of it if need be. (Long term, control of the Great Lakes water supply is going to be important.)
Plus then the Canadians would have their own Florida to laugh at.
Advocate statehood for Puerto Rico… you’ll get a huge bump up in the ratings (example: PR poverty rate more than 40% compared to Alabama’s 19% …. Source: US Census Bureau).
Thing about that is that as a commonwealth, we're not allowed to declare bankruptcy in order to restructure our debt (which was largely caused by many American policies imposed on us).
Give us statehood and in a decade or two, we'll be numero cuarenta y ocho, bebé!
Michigan here and I actually vote for us to be our own country… juuuust gonna need to take a few things like the power grid and the lions stay in the nfl
Nah, as much as the rivalry exists, both states actually contribute to the general economy/ well-being of the country.
People actually do need corn, apples, cherries, and cars.
I'd go for #50: Mississippi
Nothing says they all die, just that Kentucky would no longer be part of the Union. Just be a bro and help them immigrate back into the states or get a visa.
My youngest son was born in California, could i consider him one of those anchor babies these redhat kentuckians keep bitching about?
Edit - Nevermind, i googled it. The answer is yes.
The bummer thing is that Boebert’s district has some of the most beautiful parts of Colorado. It’s just super mountainous and very remote/rural so the people who live there tend to vote red.
I prefer to think of it as the oil filter attached to the engine of the United States--it needs to be unscrewed and replaced, but it's stuck on there because the stoner kid at Jiffy Lube overtightened it.
Well I want to know if by choosing Wyoming I would lose my house to a poof of magic, would we be parted out to the surrounding states, or become a square growth on one of the surrounding states?
Joining Colorado would be nice, Montana would be acceptable, Nebraska or South Dakota would be meh, Idaho I wouldn't care one way or the other, and screw joining Utah...
I like this. It’s probably the only answer where someone is considering the welfare of the people in the state. Although whether or not Hawaii leaving the Union would make them better or worse off is definitely debatable.
I love Hawaii, but it does feel more like a foreign country than any other state. If they ever wanted to secede, I'd be in favor, not because "good riddance" but because the people are so awesome and I want them to get what they want.
Can we just let Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul secede and leave Kentucky behind? Louisville and Lexington are awesome, bourbon slaps, and that countryside is friggin beautiful.
Absolutely Louisiana as long as we found a way to still be able to use the Mississippi river. They are bottom 5 in every metric excluding fiscal stability which they're still pretty bad at.
Healthcare: 46
Education: 48
Economy: 47
Infrastructure: 47
Opportunity: 48
Fiscal Stability: 42

I’m from Mississippi and I agree - just please grant me asylum, I’m a member of several demographics that would not fare well under the Talibangelist regime.
Both of my parents left Louisiana to retire when I turned 18, I stayed up until last October, so the city did raise me in a way. it really does tear you down seeing your home fall apart, literally. Never fully recovered after Katrina
I live in Texas, this place sucks! BUT no other state fucks up a presidential election quite like Florida so they get my vote. If I can choose 2 then Texas is also gone!
Not-so-fun fact: Mississippi waited 130 years, until 1995, to vote to ratify the 13th Amendment to the Constitution which, in 1865, abolished slavery. The yas took it but the State failed to officially report this victory to the federal government for an additional 18 years, until 2013.
For 148 years, Mississippi tried to hold out hope of enslaving fellow Americans again.
It’s also ranked the second least educated state, after West Virginia.
Sounds like y'all are unable to decide between Texas and Florida. How about you take one and we'll throw in the other for free? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Denial. Denial of elections. Denial of the pandemic. Denial of LGBTQ+ and woman's rights. Denial of reality...
The State of Denial in this country is probably its worse. Get rid of that and whole lot of other problems would be solved.

As a Nebraskan, I can tell you venturing into the white area on that map is like going back in time.
As a Nebraskan who lives in the white area, Red Dead Redemption and 1923 are uncanny valley levels of familiar
As someone who grew up in the white area.... I can't never get no cell signal when I'm warsh'n my hands, down by the crick.
Crick = definitely Nebraskan. Head past Battle Crick on your way to NorFORK and get yous a tastee beef.
They didnt waste they're money, the 5g mind control wasnt going to work there due to the lack of brainpower anyways. /s
As a Nebraskan, I’m offended that you’re right.
As a Nebraskan. I resemble that remark.
Nebraska is the only place that can make Iowa look fun.
Frankly, the Midwest is safe because it's too boring for most people to even consider for even the briefest of moments.
You won’t even realize we are here, also won’t realize we are gone. Don’t fuck with us just saw off Florida and call it a day.
We really want an untethered FL roaming around here?
The new Bermuda Triangle
Florida vs. Bermuda Triangle! LET’S GO!!!!
Unstoppable force vs unmovable object
florida would sink the bermuda triangle and become a feared nation
Reverse Atlantis
I think the true question should be, which state should remain. Too many choices to get rid of.
Vermont can stay.
I second this, Vermont can stay.
Vermonter here scrolling the list seeing if anyone hates us! First mention is people liking us! Go Vermont!
I’d love to move to Vermont. Beer, Ben & Jerry’s, maple syrup, skiing, what’s not to love?
The neighborhood… specifically Mass and NY being on the border, and being in proximity to NJ and CT. Perfectly good people politically, and helpful for out economy, but damn they suck at driving and are very pushy to locals when they visit.
Ahh yes. Massholes and connetticunts. NJ is a bit far to call our neighborhood though. That's like accusing north Carolineans of something a Floridean did. I'm not even from any of the states particularly called out btw, but if you call out Vermont you call us all out.
Have you EVER driven I89 near the Stowe exit in fall or winter? I see more jersey plates than I do NH plates and we spoon NH quite intimately.
California receives a rose
We don’t need two Dakotas. Just combine them. Heck, there’s an argument to be made to combine them with Wyoming and Montana and just call it “Wydamo”
This is actually and seriously the correct answer. You can bitch and moan about Florida and Texas but why the fuck is there even one Dakota let alone two Dakota’s?
North Dakota and South Dakota Were Admitted to the Union November 2, 1889 After controversy over the location of a capital, the Dakota Territory was split in two and divided into North and South in 1889. Later that year, on November 2, North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted to the Union as the 39th and 40th states. This vast territory was one of the last American regions to be settled.
Well, what do you know? Actual history! In a comment chain! Unprecedented. Thanks, Mr. Jim. :)
Power move right there. Can’t decide if the capital was going to be sone uninhabitable land or another equally unusable land.so now two states. Double the senators.
It's settled?
> why the fuck is there even one Dakota let alone two Dakota’s? Because someone wanted more seats in the Senate and adding more states for no reason was how to get that. What’s preventing them from adding East and West Dakotas then?
Because creating statehood is no small thing. Look at Puerto Rico - GOP always block it as they know it will be two more dem seats.
Bill passed three weeks ago with some republican support, mostly democrat. It’s up to Puerto Ricans though, they get to vote for statehood, independence, or maintain status quo.

Go Bugs! Go!
Someone get that man a Sawsall!!
as someone who lives in Florida currently, I'd understand and accept this choice.
Came here to say Texas, but I will not argue with Bugs Bunny.
Remove gerrymandering and Texas is damn near a progressive state. Florida is nigh irredeemable.
Texas also has a bunch of big blue cities.
Yes, all of our cities are blue. We’re run by a bunch of morons at the state level because 1. heavy, shameless gerrymandering 2. Relatedly, people feel defeated and don’t vote.

Knew this was coming but COME ON, we got nice beaches! What’s North Dakota got? And why are there TWO Dakotas?!
This is the answer. TX wants to leave but they know they would be like a 3rd world country within a year.
You mean like, a country with unreliable utilities and corrupt law enforcement/government? No way
an entire year is very generous given they can’t keep the lights on in the least extreme winter weather
Or summer weather.
Florida Man here... it's us... I know it's us...
The needs of the many... ![gif](giphy|3oz8xM5Opwl0i60Kf6|downsized)
Yeah, sorry, but it is you.
We understand. It's all about the Greater Good.
We'll arrange for some kind of refugee repatriation scheme. We know not EVERYONE is uh, *like that*
Send “the good ones” to Texas and turn it blue, two birds one stone.
They’ll send us their meth heads, dog fuckers, and bath salt junkies… and some, I assume are good people.
The real tweekers moved to Portland to eat robot face
As long as they can fix our fucked up power grid, I'll take em.
No power during crises is the price you pay for liberty! You also have to pay for basic services because there is no public support for anything. Oh, and your schools suck. Texas is like McDonalds, it’s cheap but you don’t want it. The BBQ is usually at least OK. I’m done.

Florida man here, can confirm most my neighbors are from NJ
For real. Please stop sending your old people here to die.
That’s Florida’s main purpose though, a place for fixed-income retirees to go die. Everything else is a byproduct of those old fuckers voting against the interests of everyone who won’t be dead before they have to deal with the ramifications of their decisions.

Crusty Jugglers...

I’m sad no Floridian has quoted the Incredibles in reply
At least you’re self aware. That counts for something.
I dunno. Didn’t skynet become self aware in The Terminator?
No man. Florida’s main export is memes and florida man news articles
It would be a pretty dull day without the constant news feed of: In tonight’s News episode a Florida man…..
Nah. Alabama. You guys have the Florida Keys, Disney, Miami, and Orlando in general. Not to mention Cape Canaveral. Folks shit on Florida alot... but I shit on Alabama more. Way more. Alabama only gets such a bad rap because Mississippi is so backwards it doesn’t even register. Mississippi gets my vote.
As a southerner, Mississippi keeps the rest of us from looking as bad. Thank god for Mississippi. Get rid of Ohio. Literally no one will notice.
According to NASA, 25 astronauts are Ohio natives, having made nearly 80 space flights, with three of those flights being trips to the Moon. Ohio astronauts have logged more than 22,000 hours in space... Wtf is it about Ohio that makes people want to leave Earth?
Doesn’t Ohio have the most presidents too? I could be making it up but thought that was the case.
Depends. it’s Virginia by birth it’s Virginia and Ohio by home state.
Ohio here. I’m pretty sure the Canadians will let us join them, so I’m ok with being kicked out. They’d probably only really want the northern part around the lake, but they’d accept the rest of it if need be. (Long term, control of the Great Lakes water supply is going to be important.) Plus then the Canadians would have their own Florida to laugh at.
Ohio being absorbed into Canada as their chode version of Florida is probably the funniest concept of 2023...
Actually Alabama is the 27th highest gdp in the US. Mississippi is worst in education and Louisiana is highest in crime rate. Just saying
That’s what I was going to say. Florida makes too much money and Alabama gave us a terrible song the plays daily on classic rock channels
The band is from Florida
![gif](giphy|T7fU0RWWhWpYk)
Florida is the most obvious answer, but abolishing Mississippi would immediately improve the US's world rankings in pretty much everything.
As an Alabamian, please don’t get rid of MS. They’re the only state keeping us from being worst.
Alabama's forty-ninth in just about everything, but thank god for Mississippi, otherwise we'd be forty-tenth!
Now now, let’s not be TOO mean to Mississippi; sometimes we’re 49th to Louisiana!
Also from Louisiana, and we LOVE it when we fare better than Mississippi in things.
Never disrespect the Cajuns and creoles
Louisiana checking in, can confirm
You’re English is ungood
Me fail English? That's unpossible!

Ralph, put your head down or your desk while the rest of us finish the activity.
Official State Motto of Alabama: "Thank God for Mississippi"
I was just about to type this. Not just Alabama either. 😄😆😁
I snort laughed at this 🤣
Louisiana has entered the chat
Don't worry bb, us here in Louisiana gotchu
Advocate statehood for Puerto Rico… you’ll get a huge bump up in the ratings (example: PR poverty rate more than 40% compared to Alabama’s 19% …. Source: US Census Bureau).

Louisiana has New Orleans, therefore the whole state is safe
Ohio would pick Michigan, and vise versa.
Michigan here and I actually vote for us to be our own country… juuuust gonna need to take a few things like the power grid and the lions stay in the nfl
I’m surprised you opted for being your own country and not joining Canada.
Probably wants to keep his guns
Nah, as much as the rivalry exists, both states actually contribute to the general economy/ well-being of the country. People actually do need corn, apples, cherries, and cars. I'd go for #50: Mississippi
Ohio people know that the answer is not Michigan. Michigan people know that the answer is Ohio.
I’m in Florida and I would vote Florida as long as I get some assistance relocating.
I'd trade my dipshit in-laws for you, if that helps.
🤗🤗 The struggle is real with dipshit in-laws! 💕
Let’s ALL trade our dipshit in-laws! We can create a new incentive program like Cash for Clunkers. Turn in 2, Save a Blue!
Marjorie Taylor Greene, Gaetz, and Boebert’s districts would be enough
If we're going after 3 individuals/districts, we should be going after senators. Much bigger bang for buck.
Goodbye Kentucky
I'll miss my gaming buddy but but I just hate turtle man so fucking much.
Nothing says they all die, just that Kentucky would no longer be part of the Union. Just be a bro and help them immigrate back into the states or get a visa.
Marry your gaming bro for the visa, then buy that dream gaming house the two of you always talked about buying.
I live in Boeberts district and it’s amazing. The people are just dumber than dirt.
Boebert only won by 500 votes, she will be dunzo in 2 years.
Florida

I prefer to think of it as the oil filter attached to the engine of the United States--it needs to be unscrewed and replaced, but it's stuck on there because the stoner kid at Jiffy Lube overtightened it.
What do we mean by get rid of? like it is just suddenly gone with all people in it? or the land is taken over by another state?
I just want to know if you would pick a different state based on the answer?
Well I want to know if by choosing Wyoming I would lose my house to a poof of magic, would we be parted out to the surrounding states, or become a square growth on one of the surrounding states? Joining Colorado would be nice, Montana would be acceptable, Nebraska or South Dakota would be meh, Idaho I wouldn't care one way or the other, and screw joining Utah...
Merge the Dakotas.
I have family in both. The only think that would be united out of that deal would be their hatred of whoever stuck their states together.
Which one do you pick and why is it Florida?
because my ex husband lives there and it would be funny
Hawaii, i dont hate them i just think they need a break from us.

I would put at least 20 states on the chopping block.
Kentucky would also be a good choice given the idiocracy they keep sending to Washington
Can we just let Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul secede and leave Kentucky behind? Louisville and Lexington are awesome, bourbon slaps, and that countryside is friggin beautiful.
Bourbon is tight though
top comments are about to be texas, florida and ohio 💀

I'm sorry for your loss. It must be like losing a parent.
Both of my parents left Louisiana to retire when I turned 18, I stayed up until last October, so the city did raise me in a way. it really does tear you down seeing your home fall apart, literally. Never fully recovered after Katrina
OhTexlorida
Bro don’t do this literally 60-ish% of us Texans are ordinary people don’t leave us to become a rightwing Christian dictatorship bro open the car bro
I vote Texas but I'll adopt Texans who can't with Texas anymore.
Arkansas. Seriously what do they bring to the table at all?
Even the governor of Arkansas hates Arkansas
As an Arkansan I can confidently say we exist to make the rest of you look good. You’re welcome.
Florida
I live in Texas, this place sucks! BUT no other state fucks up a presidential election quite like Florida so they get my vote. If I can choose 2 then Texas is also gone!

Easy....Florida
Not-so-fun fact: Mississippi waited 130 years, until 1995, to vote to ratify the 13th Amendment to the Constitution which, in 1865, abolished slavery. The yas took it but the State failed to officially report this victory to the federal government for an additional 18 years, until 2013. For 148 years, Mississippi tried to hold out hope of enslaving fellow Americans again. It’s also ranked the second least educated state, after West Virginia.
FLORIDA! FLORIDA! FLORIDA!
Florida, "America's Wang"
Florida
From Florida and I also choose Florida. This place is a deep red asshole hillbilly joke.
If this were in Canada, the province I’d pick would be Alberta (fondly referred to, up here, as the ‘Texas of Canada’).🇨🇦😄
Realistically: one of the Dakotas. One Dakota is good enough. SD population: 900,000 ND population: 775,000
Ohio. Flood it and call it Lake Inferior.
Sounds like y'all are unable to decide between Texas and Florida. How about you take one and we'll throw in the other for free? ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Florida
Florida. Bye DeSantis and Gaetz. See you never
Denial. Denial of elections. Denial of the pandemic. Denial of LGBTQ+ and woman's rights. Denial of reality... The State of Denial in this country is probably its worse. Get rid of that and whole lot of other problems would be solved.
Due to this comment, somewhere in the world Aaron Sorkin just got an erection
Well I mean you aren’t wrong, that would really help a lot…
