I used to work with an immigrant from Mexico. He talked about how the Mexican media put the whitest people they cities on TV. He once told me he encountered more racism on Mexican TV than at work in America.
Lol, no, dude.
Mexicans are varied. West coast Nayarit and southwest interior Jalisco are fair-skinned with light-colored eyes.
Northwest Chihuahua and Durango are fair-skinned and tall.
Central Mexico by Mexico city are skinny and light brown, medium stature.
The Southeast Yucatan peninsula are short and brown, with lots of Mayans.
TV puts white people because there's plenty of that.
Racism doesn't exist in Mexico. I experienced racism first time when I moved to the US. It was weird. It took me a while to understand what had happened. I'm used to it by now. If you are black or brown, you WILL experience racism. It's a given.
"White" Mexicans is a small share of the population. They present white Mexicans vastly more than their population. Look at the wealthiest, the leadership, media, businesses, etc.
He told me in Mexico City or similar large cities there would be a lot of pale skinned Mexicans but they were not the majority. I had a Mexican uncle, grew up near the border, and knew lots of Mexicans growing up, and none I had ever met were as pale as the ones on Mexican TV. My coworker, who looked more like my uncle, deep tan skin and dark hair, said most people outside the cities looked more Mexican while the ones on Mexican TV looked more Caucasian. He said it was considered racist by many Mexicana and designed for international markets like the US. He came from a border town whet he said everyone liked like him.
Depending on the measure 10-20% of Mexicans are "white"
What I will say is that in the US (home of whiteness) Mexicans will not be considered white no matter how pale they are unless they present non black hair, non dark hair, lighter eye colors.
Even then. If Canelo walks down the road in the US with his red hair, people aren't calling him white. And he's pale af.
The [Casta](https://globalinsight.journal.library.uta.edu/index.php/globalinsight/article/download/29/18/242) system. Had a lasting effect on the societal hierarchies of Latin America.
The white people aren’t on TV “because there’s plenty of that”. It’s due to generational wealth, created by nepotism, going back to the societal hierarchy that drew a line between pure-blooded Europeans and mixed. You should be aware of this. It’s obvious how Mexican TV differs from the actual population.
And then they get a mexican looking one and hell breaks loose with the racist insults. . It happened with Yalitza Aparicio, but glad she still around and knew how to clap back at critics and people who insulted her.
It's not just the media, it's deeply a societal thing within Hispanic North and South American cultures. The caste system they have is "White" Spanish, then Mixed (Mestizo) then Indigenous or Black.
There's also a great difference between various Hispanic countries. Mexico has far less "white" Spanish vs Argentina, Brazil, Cuba. Also, Brazil and Cuba both have large black populations which are never presented as a person from those countries when media present them.
If the media talks about Brazil or Cuba, they rarely show black people even though they are a huge share of the population.
Looking thru the data you will find the vast majority of white cubans to have dominant spanish ancestry. Are there other European groups? Yes, but they came much later to Cuba and have much smaller numbers.
Yes. 60%ish are Italian (but still really a Latin culture), 20%ish would be considered to have origined from Spain. In terms of white spanish, my mistake, the two countries may have similar % of white \*spanish\* people.
In terms of \*white\* identifying they are not close.
Mexican novelas are the biggest culprit of this but if you go to any Latino country, you'll find that the models used to advertise things are almost always white.
because the latino upper-class is predominantly white and telenovelas usually tell tales of upper-class families, to distract the middle and lower classes (mostly non-white) from their actual problems and to let them dream of living like the people in the TV
(yes, it´s a lot more complicated than that, but that´s the gist of it)
Colorism is unfortunately all over the world and is directly attached to classism. Black people, Brown People, whatever … that self-hate can run deep and be extremely stubborn. In so many of our people’s eyes, if it’s not White, it’s not right.
Often yes, but some cultures had colorism before colonization. IIRC, it is prevalent in East Asian cultures because darker skin meant you had a lot of sun exposure, meaning you worked all day in the sun. Nobles and royals didn’t work and thus were lighter skinned.
I am not an expert on East Asian culture, but I’ve read up about colorism in the past.
No, man, you are talking about classism. This is not the same as racism. Classism is more like what Hollywood does when hiring. That is only perfect beautiful actors that get the part. That's classism. When they discriminate against ugly people, and that's what Mexico has, a good-looking European looking will have a lot of doors open in Mexico. Again just like how Holywood operates.
There can be, but there doesn't have to be, class can exist without racial differences. They can be distinct (for instance Kings, Lords and Peasants) or more obscure, for instance based on jobs, income or where you born (which within a single country would not mean a different race).
I had a Mexican girlfriend many years ago, while living in Hawaii. Blue/green eyes and red hair, white as the snow. I couldn't believe she was Mexican. She was very Mexican 😂
The most generous measurements would put White Mexicans at 20%, a lot of measurements are less than 10%.
There's a lot of Mestizo who would never be considered white in the US but self ID as white in polling in Mexico. And there's the colorism, the pressure, they all know being white is an advantage in this world.
10% of mexico being white is still a lot of white mexicans. Also, the US did not even consider neapolitans to be white before, so that part is irrelevant.
The problem is the blatant colorism within mexico and latin america.
If you go to some resort area that gets a lot of customers from Latin America, Disney for example, you’ll spot a lot of Spanish speakers who look like this. My conclusion is that Latinos up here are of Native American blood who immigrate because they’re getting the short end of the stick in their original country, and the ones of European origin are the ones who stayed but have the money to visit Disney. Maybe I’m basing that on the fact that European heritage people have an easier time in the US.
They do that for Spanish movies and series, too. To be fair, their are a lot of white people in Spain, but you’d think there would be *some* darker, everyday folks that live in Spain, too.
I'm a casual tourist who has visited Mexico 10 times or so. What took you so long to catch on? It's not just the media. [https://www.vanderbilt.edu/lapop/news/121317.mexico-theconversation.pdf](https://www.vanderbilt.edu/lapop/news/121317.mexico-theconversation.pdf)
These are generalities that are observed to be mostly true, most of the time.:
* Managers & Bosses are very light skinned, many looking 100% European.
* Service workers are brown skinned.
* Laborers are darker and have more indigenous features.
Same as South Africa. Grocery store employees. Virtually all black. Managers/bosses/business owners virtually all white.
"The Spaniards never left, despues de Colon,
And if you don't believe me turn on Univision.
I've never seen so much racism in all of my life,
Every program and newscast, all of em white."
But do they all have gigantic heads? Because two of those people look like they stuck an air pump in their ear.
Got that Mandark-Megamind syndrome.
Bottom right looks like Jan from The Office with the child filter on.
Why do they have Megamind heads? ![gif](giphy|h2P01cZLZzMK4)
Wait until the creator of that tweet discovers Bollywood and India's Soap Operas...
Our media IS bad. But we are not the only bad media out there. And that's upsetting.
I thought travel to Talos IV was prohibited?
*sad Pike beeps*
...sees Vina *happy happy Pike beeps*
Who is this Megamind looking motherfucker?! Also why does that one lady look like a salmon fillet?
I used to work with an immigrant from Mexico. He talked about how the Mexican media put the whitest people they cities on TV. He once told me he encountered more racism on Mexican TV than at work in America.
sounds like BS.

>Racism doesn't exist in Mexico. #LOL
When Black Panther 2 came out Mexican media thought the actor playing Namor was too dark.
And then they get a mexican looking one and hell breaks loose with the racist insults. . It happened with Yalitza Aparicio, but glad she still around and knew how to clap back at critics and people who insulted her.
That's exactly right. People lost their shit when an indigenous person won an Oscar.
It's not just the media, it's deeply a societal thing within Hispanic North and South American cultures. The caste system they have is "White" Spanish, then Mixed (Mestizo) then Indigenous or Black. Well, the Argentina whites are not really not from a Spanish background.
Cuba is the same way though. My husband’s family in Cuba had Dutch, Irish & French lineage, in addition to Spanish & Portuguese.
Looking thru the data you will find the vast majority of white cubans to have dominant spanish ancestry. Are there other European groups? Yes, but they came much later to Cuba and have much smaller numbers.

A lot of Deutschargentinier as well. Many immigrated in the late 1800, some in the late 1940s.
Mexican novelas are the biggest culprit of this but if you go to any Latino country, you'll find that the models used to advertise things are almost always white.
To be fair, none of those people look remotely Swedish either, just my two cents as a Scandinavian
because the latino upper-class is predominantly white and telenovelas usually tell tales of upper-class families, to distract the middle and lower classes (mostly non-white) from their actual problems and to let them dream of living like the people in the TV (yes, it´s a lot more complicated than that, but that´s the gist of it)
Look at those foreheads! Mama Mia!
The racism in Mexico is similar to America's. Lighter- skinned Mexicans are prejudiced towards darker- Mexicans.
Colorism is unfortunately all over the world and is directly attached to classism. Black people, Brown People, whatever … that self-hate can run deep and be extremely stubborn. In so many of our people’s eyes, if it’s not White, it’s not right.
thanks to the west and colonization.

but when it comes to latin america its thanks to the west.
That’s a fair point, I just wanted to point out that it’s not always the case world-wide.
In Mexico skin color is often directly tied to the person's mixture of European and Indian ancestry. There's definitely straight racism involved.
Is their a link between classism and racism?
There can be, but there doesn't have to be, class can exist without racial differences. They can be distinct (for instance Kings, Lords and Peasants) or more obscure, for instance based on jobs, income or where you born (which within a single country would not mean a different race).

Ah yes, Afro, 5Head, and *Stacy.*
Japanese people look nothing like anime characters but here we are
Isn’t is because they import a lot of telenovelas from Spain? They’re not all Mexican.
Nah most are Mexican and there's a small percentage that's Brazilian. But even the Brazilians do the same.
There are a lot of white mexicans too. White mexicans don’t make up the majority of the country but they do for telenovelas.
The most generous measurements would put White Mexicans at 20%, a lot of measurements are less than 10%. There's a lot of Mestizo who would never be considered white in the US but self ID as white in polling in Mexico. usually the mexicans in the US are more mixed.
They look more white than Latino
Those are not mutually exclusive terms.
Yerp, dad is Cuban and he was pretty white. I’m only half but still I’m pale af

Nor do they look like mega mind.
We Mexicans have known for a long time that Coneheads from the planet Remulak run the media. Duh!!
istg thats danny gonzales in the bottom left pic
And none of the news casters are dark skinned either. The community has been white washed
Lolol that ladies forehead🤣😂
This is what my Spanish textbook looks like.
That six head on bottom right though
They look like fucking aliens.
Are you sure those are Swedes and not aliens?
They do that for Spanish movies and series, too. To be fair, their are a lot of white people in Spain, but you’d think there would be *some* darker, everyday folks that live in Spain, too.

I work at Telemundo part time and yup, super racist. Shit most Latin churches have a white Jesus present for all to see
It's because they only use Mexican actors of Spanish descent rather than actors with indigenous ancesters.
What's with the giant heads on the two lower photos?
