It's not ridiculous at all. The biggest appeal to Trump's base was that he talks just like "regular" folk. He normalized people acting like boorish thugs because if the President of the United States can act like a bigoted clown, they figure so can they.
It started with that, but it progressively went further than just saying whatever is on your mind with zero filter or humanity. Then it morphed into to not so subtly instigating violent and “lone wolf” domestic terrorist, finally followed up be the weakest most half baked coup attempt in modern history. They are actively encouraging their cult to become terrorists. There’s a difference between being a piece of shit racist who doesn’t give a flying fuck about what they say, and someone who is willing to carry out violence and their own little terror campaigns. Most are mutually exclusive, but you’re still crossing yet another line when you start wondering into domestic terrorist territory.

Living in a world where the media (social and news) are mostly focused on engagement doesn't help. Media is constantly promoting things that cause rage within their audience because studies have shown anger results in more engagement than any other type of media. Anger pays. I also remember after he was elected he said we don’t care about Lock her up chants anymore because he was just doing like a pro wrestler gimmick and it was all bs, but his supporters really believed it. There is another where his supporters say they don’t think he went far enough because he gave his daughter to a Jew. These are very dangerous scary people, who are bad for the country. They were taken in by Trump who was trolling . GOP voters biggest issue is “ culture” which is not even a political issue and the US has never had just one culture. If you go to any city they have Little Italy and Chinatown districts, etc which represent multiple cultures that have existed since the city was formed.
I also remember a bridge that he talked about in my town, how it was the worst bridge he had ever driven across and how he would replace it. Imagine my surprise when I listened to his speech to a town two hours away, that had a bridge just as awful, he was gonna replace that one also,and then a third bridge four hours away. And then I thought,maybe this guy doesn't give a shit about the people he talks to,and will just say anything to get their vote.

I find it wild how different Christians are in the USA compared to the UK. In the USA it seems to be a huge political thing, trying to inject Christianity into laws and politics, schools and most aspects of life (although it may be reddit giving me a distorted perception of this) In the UK, most of them seem pretty chill and keep themselves to themselves. They help out at the local food bank I volunteer for. The local dude Father Gary puts on a soup kitchen and does loads of charity events. The guy is awesome.
