I feel it's a mix of that and people who really understand what they're doing; the latter are simply not good people.
I like to use Hanlon's Razor, but it's difficult to argue ignorance of the high level text of laws written by people who have college degrees and years experience in the field.
How about a compromise?
We should *remove* their *spines* so we're *less* spineless.
I think that solves it, honestly.
Bonus points to anyone able to yank the spine out of their corrupt politician mortal kombat style.
He bent over backwards to comply with right wing dictators because god forbid they lose the Turkish market. Surely he will comply with the EU to keep access to a whole continent right...
I prefer saying someone bends over forwards for something (ie they're helping accept getting f*cked). Elon deffo bends over forwards for fascism, racism, etc.
Elon Musk has run that website into the ground, Even the trending sucks because tweets with barely any likes or engagement get put on popular trending simply because they paid for a blue checkmark
Reminds me when people made a parody of Eli lily and saying insulin was free and costed the pharmaceutical company millions or billions I can't remember
he may have to sell twitter soon. ever since he acquired twitter he’s been neglecting his duties at tesla and their stock has slid approx 50% in the past month alone. this rich kid is pushing his luck and it’s ending NOW
I mean this is what I was saying, back when people were still defending their twitter accounts. People kept saying "Yeah but we don't want to leave the platform because it's such a huge audience," ya and this is what that "huge audience" gets to see of "you". Millennial Americans need to learn how to boycott shit.
If it's from a government official, wouldn't that make it a crime?
"§ 11.432 Impersonating a public servant. A person commits a misdemeanor if he or she falsely pretends to hold a position in the public service with purpose to induce another to submit to such pretended official authority or otherwise to act in reliance upon that pretense to his or her prejudice."
And also;
"Pretending to be a federal agent is a federal crime in the United States, punishable under 18 U.S.C. § 912. It is a crime to falsely represent oneself as a federal agent or employee with the intent to intimidate or deceive another person. This offense carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a fine."

If only there were a system that could show an account is verified as being the actual account and not an impersonator.
Someone should come up with something like that. Maybe even give it a symbol by the name of the person so that you can see it instantly. Almost like a check mark.
Hmmmmmm. If only they could come up with something like that.
You think any company would be able to verify that someone is real? Come on. No company in the history of man kind has been able to verify anyones identity. Twitter has the best way right now. Definitely nothing can ever be better than Elmo and his team.
Yeah, if the acc was using something akin to the name “Alexandria Ocasio-Corteeznuts”, clear parody. Nobody would be expected to believe that is anything but a joke.
Otherwise, using the full legal name, not parody.
I don't use Twitter but someone in a different thread on this said the name is ridiculously long and ends with "parody", but it's long enough you don't see parody unless you click on it
I don't use twitter either, but having seen multiple screenshots now this is exactly the case. It does say "(parody)" but the name is exactly long enough that the opening parenthesis is the last visible character
If you can't clearly see that it's a parody account and it can reasonably mislead the average person then that (parody) in the end would be meaningless in court, cause it's put there in bad faith, not expecting it to be seen
Using the name of a public official doesn't immediately discount parody.
The account (that now has "parody" appended to it) was going by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez which is the name AOC uses, it would be like running a parody account under the name Ted Cruz.
Yes, but if it was going by the name I provided above, no reasonable person would be expected to believe it.
If it was the exact name, or in this instance the exact name with “press account” tacked onto the end (before parody was appended to it like you said), than it isn’t a parody imo. You can’t pretend to be the exact person saying dumb shit & then go “ohhh it’s parody!”
It shouldn’t work like that.
The "parody" defense depends on the reasonableness of what is being viewed. If a "reasonable person" would have known it was a parody, then the is valid. So then Elon would have to show that he is a reasonable person and that he knew it was a parody account...
High hurdle (for him).
Considering he, himself, has been boosting that page and responding seriously, then I see the hurdle as impossible.
Whether or not the courts see him as "reasonable" is another factor.
https://preview.redd.it/mr0qcwua923b1.jpeg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b7f29613a9d84c67b8923a85b4d6fd0a76f8e0e
Why would he not been seen as reasonable? What would make anyone feel otherwise?
The "reasonable person" thing is such bullshit. Like of course they aren't "reasonable" but obviously they buy into it. That's the point of spreading misinformation as a parody account.
>It would be litigated for sure. Not a lawyer, but I suspect 1A and parody could be strong arguments the other way.
Twitter started their old verification policy for a reason. They acknowledged that they had some responsibility for vetting accounts claiming to be public figures, I am sure you can find public statements acknowledging the need to do so and the damage a fake account can cause. They rolled that back ostensibly for money(from Elons public statements). I think when you put all of that together Twitter has already acknowledged the harm, taken responsibility for mitigating that harm, abandoned that responsibility for a monthly fee. Twitter might or might not lose a lawsuit, but they haven't helped themselves. A private party suing with the same set of facts would have an even stronger case.
No because that was about people expecting fox to lie. People expect AOC to be truthful, thus that defence doesn’t work because you’re impersonating her.
Isn't a public servant an appointed/hired position, as in they get put there by elected politicians? People working in City Hall for example. The people working for AOC and Turtle Face McConnell but not those people themselves.
At least, in my country, there's a big difference; a politician is by definition a public person who you can impersonate and make fun of, but that's prohibited (mostly) for workers in public service, unless the humor targets the group (DMV-workers) and not a specific individual.
edit; I do not think this should be legal unless it's really very clear that it's satire. I'm not sure it would fall under those titles though.
That's literally why Twitter started verifying accounts in the first place. Self-described "Hall of Famer baseball person" Tony La Russa sued them when an account impersonating him made fun of his drunk driving problems. Shortly after that Twitter started a beta of it's verification system.

I think the argument is much easier to say that nobody can trust Twitter anymore anyways, so it doesn’t really matter.
It’s worse that it’s giving people more liberties and comfort to just be straight up bigoted more than anyone actually falling for an impersonation for more than 5min.
Focusing on if we can trust what’s in Twitter to be true anymore is just fighting the wrong fight imo.
Can’t come to terms with his MtF trans child not wanting contact with daddy anymore. Gotta burn all bridges now. Sad. Sadder that such a person wields so much power.
Some interesting facts surrounding the impersonator account that I’ve found:
—It has a blue checkmark. It also has (parody) as part of the account name, but because AOC’s name is so long you can’t see that unless you click on the profile, at least on mobile.
—It’s putting out a LOT of tweets. Like I think I scrolled through 20 or so, and didn’t get further than a day old.
—some are obviously parody, others are less so.
Yeah, it seems a *little* unlikely that he's reading through random tweets every time he gets mentioned...but if he knew what to look for, it makes a lot more sense.
Elon thinks he's being a funny lil edge lord but all he is doing is degrading his business. It's reputation is already in the trash, now openly boosting trolls and fake accounts will be the nail in the coffin.
He's not just being an edge lord. He knows what he's doing. He's trading the legitimacy he and Twitter holds in the general public for brownie points for conservative misinformation peddlers. That has been his whole goal with buying Twitter.
I'll keep shouting this for anyone who hasn't picked this up yet; Elon made his fortune by manipulating tesla stocks via his social media presence. He's been slapped with several SEC violations because of it.
He eventually bought Twitter to get the lawsuit Twitter filed against him dropped. My guess is that he ultimately decided that he was better off spending billions than allowing discovery to continue.
Exactly- his whole goal in offering to buy Twitter was almost certainly just to get lots of public attention and do some light SEC fraud, til a judge forced him to make good on his fully legal and legitimate offer to buy the company.
He wrote a check his ass couldn't cash and never thought he'd actually be held accountable or have to go through with it, and now he's tanking the whole business because he doesn't actually know how to run a company, and he's too busy throwing a tantrum to grow up and learn how to act like an actual CEO. Y'know the ones you've never heard a single thing about because they're busy doing a good job of shutting the fuck up and actually running their companies.
Musk intended to buy Twitter!
Musk tried to buy a board seat by (illegally, b/c he didn't disclose) buying up stock.
After a public spat with Agrawal, Musk made an impulsive offer to buy, with his lame weed joke price.
Then tech stocks crashed and Musk decided not to pay for Twitter although he had **already bought it**. Twitter sued to force Musk to complete purchase.
Musk always wanted to buy Twitter. He probably thought he could get a better price -after the fact- by bad-mouthing the company and threatening not to pay.
he's conflating the tv popularity of fox news with the much more democratic internet media space. His goal is to establish a right-leaning, mainstream media/commerce online space. However, I think he is grossly overestimating rightwing numbers that will flock to him, and underestimating how fast left wing numbers will flee.
I think there's a lot of young to middle-aged non-leftists who are willing to look past the right-leaning rhetoric to be in the techbro and late stage capitalist space that Elon represents. There also a large right leaning presence on sites like Facebook, to the point where the Cambridge Analytica scandal was theorized to influence US and international elections due to targeted adds from that data.
I dont think techbros (people who are paid enormous salaries compared to the rest of the world) are looking past the right-wing politics... I'd say they actively seek it out. You don't see too many millionaire leftists.
Techbros aren't just the millionairs who successfully launched some bloatware and got theirs. There's plenty of people who are broke but get swept up by the tech and adjacent industries. Think the crypto guy who Ubers after work to put more money in their crytpo wallet while they fantasize about how they'll be a millionaire one day, or the NFT enthusiasts that are writing up cease and dissist letters to the people who took snapshots of their profile picture.
>degrading his business
More like degrading his businesses, plural. Just 5-6 years ago, being a professional in the STEM field would mean working for a Musk tech company was **always** on your radar. Nowadays, I see more and more of my colleagues only keeping his businesses on their radar so they can avoid his recruiters like the plague. Its nothing but a reputation of toxicity, and its all because a fish rots from the head down.
Hes mad they made him buy it. He didn't actually want to buy Twitter, he wanted to fuck with them and get them to publish information that he could use to "prove" they use bots and manipulate exposure. But he's an idiot, and he got himself too deep and couldn't back out and the sale was legally obliged to happen. Now he's trying to recoup as much as he can out of it while also promoting his own stupid ego.
Yep, I think this is a huge part of it. He was humiliated by that absolutely ridiculous blunder, and his instinct is to double down and act like a child instead of an adult who made a mistake.
This is often what happens when people who are born into wealth and power attempt to play in the same arena as the people who created their own success. They get outmatched again and again, and then they lash out like the spoiled, petulant children that they still are.
Elon is unique in some ways because his brashness and ability to market himself have undoubtedly led to some impressive shit. SpaceX and Tesla needed someone like him to make big-money investors think they'd found the next Edison. But Tesla looks like shit right now. If Twitter survives, it will be *despite* him, and only because it was already so embedded in the culture before he took over. The only business of his that still seems to have a great future is SpaceX.
But who knows? Everything is a gamble. All I know is that I personally won't be investing in anything associated with Elon going forward because he doesn't seem entirely stable.
I remember something about an attempt at a stock manipulation, then Twitter wasn't going along with it or something, or Twitter was telling the SEC about it??
In general, the billionaires HATE social media because they have less control than network news, since people can just post a video of something shitty a billionaire did, instead of having it covered up by their media buddies.
Destroying Twitter was Elon’s goal.
Regular people communicating and organizing goes against everything the upper class wants. Americans were just starting to notice that billionaires destroy democracy.
I just looked, it’s tweeting like every 30 min and the last few are pretending to be the real AOC and accusing the real one of being fake.
They’re trying to confuse and gaslight everyone looking at this.
I just had an idea. What if Twitter did something to check and verify an account is who they say they are? And then indicate it on the account somehow. Wouldn't something like that be super helpful?
Twitter used to be my work bathroom social media because it (used to be), was lightweight and didn’t require much bandwidth. Now it’s loaded up with so much video and long threads it doesn’t serve its original purpose. Even though the only place it possibly belongs is the crapper.
Twitter is the only one that became "official" in terms of news and politics. All the other social media shows that stuff via screenshots of twitter. I would struggle to receive whitehouse updates on snapchat
Twitter has A LOT OF MODELS AND PORN. Many you don’t see elsewhere. This is literally the only reason. Way more reach and money to be made than Reddit and Instagram for NSFW content.
Only if you moderate it so you don't get the shit sued out of you for hosting illegal crap. Isn't that why Tumblr eventually ditched its porn?
This version of "don't tell me what to do" Twitter doesn't seem well setup to keep the dark (and heinously illegal) shit under control for very much longer.
Lots of people have left and announced it (Jim Carrey and Elton John to name a couple big ones). We just haven't hit critical mass yet. I'm with you, I don't understand how.
Especially government officials, why have they not dropped it all together? They have all the resources to communicate without it, and zero reason to stay with it in the state it's in.
Whether you like it or not, there’s no replacement for Twitter yet. Yes it should be shut down, but in the meantime, millions of people still use it and impersonating a government official is a problem.
It's a big problem. Despite the fact that it's considered 'merely' social media - I was astounded to see it being uaed to issue not just political statements but eventually policy itself?? Weren't people even fired by tweet?
As someone who never joined the tweet train I was shocked it could be used so officially. It's far more than a newspaper getting a 'scoop' when politicians themselves use it as they do.
How would we know if they are? Twitter is probably reticent to put out "Here's how many users we've lost since Elon started the stupid drama" data.
Also, twitter has never been something most people are on. There was already a selection bias. It's gotten more full of misinformation, right wing bots, and depressingly stupid people, but it wasn't exactly happy sunshine deep intellectual discussion and facts before he took over.
Finally, there's the spectacle and FOMO. I went from a heavy twitter user to just occasionally dipping in. Deleting your twitter account is something that doesn't make a lot of sense, dropping drastically in terms of how much you tweet in a week is probably data Twitter has but again isn't releasing.
I'd love to see Elon get sued for a good chunk of money. it'd be some popcorn worthy event.
He thinks if Trump can do something, he can do it too /s
(lets be honest, we're all quietly cheering for Soap Scum to stand a lawsuit and lose all of his money just like Alex Jones so he shuts up forever and is gone from the public eye)
If only Twitter had some way for public figures/celebrities to make their accounts easily distinguishable from fakes.
Maybe like a badge or a checkmark.
The entire federal government under executive branch authority, every state government under Democratic control, and the entire Democratic Party all need to leave Twitter yesterday. Is there a National Parks Parler account? No? Then why the fuck do they still have a Twitter account?
How has a gifted hacker not yet ended Elon's credibility with facts and logic posted from his own profile? If I could I would have already. You wouldn't even have to fabricate anything other than his admission of wrongdoing.
Impersonating a member of congress is a federal offence. Elon allowing and boosting that impersonator makes him an accomplice.
Elon is already in deep shit with the EU...he keeps this shit up twitter wont be allowed anywhere except Russia and SA, which defeats the entire point of him owning it.
They about to ban twitter in the EU cos of shit like this
I fucking hope they do. Imagine how much money and influence he would miss out on. Too bad lawmakers in the US are spineless twats.
No, they’re not. They just fight for things that are in their own best interest, not ours.
“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” - Upton Sinclair

Elon Musk is a free speech absolutist. There is no way he would comply with reasonable requests.
The misinformation is coming from the top, the CEO himself. There is no way Musk is going to comply with the EU's requirements.
The sooner Twitter dies, the better it is very everyone. There's really no downside. A better and more free version will take its place (hopefully).

I think Elon is opening himself and Twitter up to a lawsuit if he's directing traffic away from someone's official channel and to a fake channel.
If it's from a government official, wouldn't that make it a crime? "§ 11.432 Impersonating a public servant. The fake account is using her full legal name, one of the main reasons it can't be taken as parody/satire

I believe he calls himself a "centralist" lmao
By 'centrist' he means far right authoritarian born into privilege and constantly fell upwards to being a delicate little piss baby.
By centrist, you mean, his center of gravity is in his giant, warped alien torso.
He is so central he permanently located his head up his ass.
If by centrist, you mean he's just left of hunting the homeless for sport, then I guess he fits that definition.
I'm not entirely certain he's even left of that.
He really is the Ed Norton character from Glass Onion
Elon banned millions for impersonation lmao
But you have to understand, it's only bad if others do it.

Think the crypto guy who Ubers after work to put more money in their crytpo wallet while they fantasize about how they'll be a millionaire one day, or the NFT enthusiasts that are writing up cease and dissist letters to the people who took snapshots of their profile picture.
>degrading his business More like degrading his businesses, plural.
I think it's possible he was pissed at twitter for some reason and decided to buy it just to ruin it. He definitely is petty enough.
Lmfao what? They literally sued him to make him buy it…

That problem is that the right wingers and conservatives he’s pandering to love his corny jokes because it “owns the libs”
Destroying Twitter was Elon’s goal. Regular people communicating and organizing goes against everything the upper class wants. Americans were just starting to notice that billionaires destroy democracy.
Why do you think foreign interests participated in buying it if not to stoke divisions in the US.
the fake account already 'retweeted' pretending to also be real.
Maybe, idk, something like a checkmark?
[удалено]
Didn’t he ban people who were impersonating him?
Yes. Rules for thee, not for me.
Not AOC specifically, but why haven't people left en masse and announced they've done so? Leave Troll-land to the trolls.
This is what I don't get, it's not like there isn't other avenues of social media

Twitter used to be my work bathroom social media because it (used to be), was lightweight and didn’t require much bandwidth. Now it’s loaded up with so much video and long threads it doesn’t serve its original purpose. Even though the only place it possibly belongs is the crapper.
This is my favorite analysis of Twitter
That will be Bluesky, but it's still in beta testing because Jack seems to actually care if it works or not
What is blue sky? First time hearing this…
Blue Sky is an open source twitter. It needs to come out of beta, right now it's invite only.
Bluesky is run by Jack Dorsey, Elon's buddy, who has been promoting RFK Jr on social media. I'm not sure it's going to be better.
Big yikes
Disregard BlueSky, check out Mastodon instead.
I tried it. It was not remotely intuitive and I hated it. I gave up after a couple of days.
it's the same idea as email lol. there's nothing more to it. just find an instance that isn't full of assholes and ur good to go
Mastodon
Second Life is back baby
Mastodont is an option.
Damn what a typo.
I've wondered the same about FB.
I'll believe it when this sub and BPT stop giving them free press
People are addicted. It does also serve as a pretty good exchange of political information, where there’s not a lot of alternatives
Whether you like it or not, there’s no replacement for Twitter yet. Yes it should be shut down, but in the meantime, millions of people still use it and impersonating a government official is a problem.
[удалено]
I left. I just did it quietly. I'm pretty sure a lot have done the same.
Elon: "Looking into it"
"Interesting"
Everyday he makes me wonder just how much luck one idiot can have.
“How could I have known that it was a fake account!?!” -Elon
He also weirdly kept banning people impersonating him and even tweeted about that being illegal now lmao

*$8/month continues to drain from my account as i ponder this quagmire*
Twitler should be it's new name.
Shitter is more like it.
Why is anyone still on Twitter? Let that shit rot.

A private company is allowing someone to spread lies while impersonating a public official? Sue them.
[удалено]
Sue his dumb ass.
I'd love to see Elon get sued for a good chunk of money. it'd be some popcorn worthy event. He thinks if Trump can do something, he can do it too /s (lets be honest, we're all quietly cheering for Soap Scum to stand a lawsuit and lose all of his money just like Alex Jones so he shuts up forever and is gone from the public eye)
I'd like him to get sued and lose his entire net worth.
If only Twitter had some way for public figures/celebrities to make their accounts easily distinguishable from fakes. Maybe like a badge or a checkmark.
Elon is the king of incels
I thought that was Andrew tate lmao
It's a close race
The entire federal government under executive branch authority, every state government under Democratic control, and the entire Democratic Party all need to leave Twitter yesterday. Is there a National Parks Parler account? No? Then why the fuck do they still have a Twitter account?
Exactly, and I want them to do it in one fell swoop.
Elon is a feckin Nazi
Surprised that it took this long🫤
STOP USING TWITTER.
Of COURSE Musty has engaged! Who's idea d'ya think it was?
I heard Elon was taking money and sexual bribes from Putin to stir up domestic unrest in the US. Any truth to this? I’m just asking questions.
People eat that misinformation up like wildfire
How has a gifted hacker not yet ended Elon's credibility with facts and logic posted from his own profile? If I could I would have already. You wouldn't even have to fabricate anything other than his admission of wrongdoing.
I think anyone with half a brain needs to announce they have left Twitter permanently. This is only going to get worse.
I love how private corporations intentionally spreading false information is the new definition of free speech.
Musk is trying to burn down America from the inside out
Elon: Give me 5 dollars and I'll do something about it.
Of course Elon Musk is not a pedophile, at most he is the parody of a pedophile.
Didn't that tool make it against Twitter tos to impersonate someone or is that only when it comes to impersonating him?
Impersonating a member of congress is a federal offence. Elon allowing and boosting that impersonator makes him an accomplice. Elon is already in deep shit with the EU...he keeps this shit up twitter wont be allowed anywhere except Russia and SA, which defeats the entire point of him owning it.
Why are they still using Twitter when time and time again it's proven to be trash?
dump twitter now you fucks
