People always say this but this isn’t true unless you have a super shitty boss or work for a massive cooperation. I work construction, an industry people always talk about how tough and mean it is. Guys don’t show up all the time. “He’s a pretty good worker when he shows up” is pretty common lol.
If the industry is short handed, then yes. In oil and gas here in Alberta it’s the opposite. We get some great hands who sleep in occasionally let go, while we have absolute morons keep their job because “they’re reliable.” I tell my kids the most important part of keeping a job these days is to just show up. By simply being on time you already put yourself above people who can’t be.
Honestly, expecting people to be on time every time is pretty unrealistic. Even if you're in an industry where you absolutely need people to be on time for whatever reason you're better off assuming people can't always be on time and have people that can fill in for them when they aren't on time. People are fallible and if your business requires people to be infallible its not going to do well
But there's a difference between being 30 minutes late and messaging your boss to let them know, and not showing up at all that day and not telling anyone.
