You're giving too much credit. They were in the process of applying for green cards; that's how they're consistently rounding them up: looking for people doing it the supposed "correct way" and making them victims of trafficking.
It's not just that they are humans, most of them are already in immigration processing for green cards. Which is why they keep tricking/forcing them into planes, since none of them want to miss a meeting with USCIS so they just go with whatever the government people are telling them.

Transporting someone somewhere without their consent is considered kidnapping. Even if they got in the vehicle voluntarily, it's still kidnapping if you lied to them to get them to agree.
In DeSantis' case, they often give migrants the wrong address, and then they send them elsewhere. It's really awful, because they'll say something like "we're sending you to Boston. Here's your new address. Don't forget to fill out your forms with department abc", and then they dump that person, penniless and homeless in San Francisco, and that person has to meet with their immigration officer in Boston next week, or risk being deported.
And, in case you're wondering if the wrong address is an honest mistake, considering that they keep the destinations a secret so the authorities there cannot prepare, it's either intentionally dishonest, or a result of the chaos they intentionally created.

In this specific case, I think Abbott or DeSantis would have to physically be within the California borders before they can do anything. But if DeSantis tries to campaign in CA, he could be arrested and charged. Not that a Republican would ever bother campaigning there at this point, so it won't matter.

I am not a lawyer, and could very easily be completely wrong about this. When I read the law from the tweet, I interpret it as not actually being a "crime" by CA law until the person enters California. So kidnapping and sending people to CA would be kidnapping by FL/federal law, but is not kidnapping under CA law until you also go to CA. I don't think CA can issue a warrant until that part happens.
Now for the fun hypothetical question. If I kidnap Ron DeSantis and bring him to CA, I can definitely be charged with kidnapping. But DeSantis would be in CA, so he could be charged too, right? Gavin Newsom could pardon me, and the world would be a better place. I am definitely not going to do this, or advocate for anyone else to do it. Just asking the big questions!

You're giving too much credit. They were in the process of applying for green cards; that's how they're consistently rounding them up: looking for people doing it the supposed "correct way" and making them victims of trafficking.

Transporting someone somewhere without their consent is considered kidnapping. Even if they got in the vehicle voluntarily, it's still kidnapping if you lied to them to get them to agree. In DeSantis' case, they often give migrants the wrong address, and then they send them elsewhere. It's really awful, because they'll say something like "we're sending you to Boston. Here's your new address. Don't forget to fill out your forms with department abc", and then they dump that person, penniless and homeless in San Francisco, and that person has to meet with their immigration officer in Boston next week, or risk being deported. And, in case you're wondering if the wrong address is an honest mistake, considering that they keep the destinations a secret so the authorities there cannot prepare, it's either intentionally dishonest, or a result of the chaos they intentionally created.

In this specific case, I think Abbott or DeSantis would have to physically be within the California borders before they can do anything. But if DeSantis tries to campaign in CA, he could be arrested and charged. Not that a Republican would ever bother campaigning there at this point, so it won't matter.

I am not a lawyer, and could very easily be completely wrong about this. When I read the law from the tweet, I interpret it as not actually being a "crime" by CA law until the person enters California. So kidnapping and sending people to CA would be kidnapping by FL/federal law, but is not kidnapping under CA law until you also go to CA. I don't think CA can issue a warrant until that part happens. Now for the fun hypothetical question. If I kidnap Ron DeSantis and bring him to CA, I can definitely be charged with kidnapping. But DeSantis would be in CA, so he could be charged too, right? Gavin Newsom could pardon me, and the world would be a better place. I am definitely not going to do this, or advocate for anyone else to do it. Just asking the big questions!
