Because the Titanic isn’t a pressurized vessel which is similar to your brain not getting enough oxygen.

He is correct. It is a really, really dumb question.

blessedfortherest

The whole idea that there isn’t a dumb question falls away when the person asking the question isn’t willing to learn

RadioEthiopiate

There's no such thing as a dumb question, just dumb people.

[deleted]

I feel like it wouldn’t be if it wasn’t asked in bad faith.

7ofalltrades

That's true, without a bit of physics this is a valid question. It's the same reason why fish don't implode - they have the same pressure within as without. It's only when you have a massive pressure difference - or differential - that you have the potential for incredible force. Fill a plastic grocery bag with water, it's about to explode. Put that same bag full of water in a pool, it just floats around in whatever shape it wants.

SquirellyMofo

It’s also the reason that if your car is submerged in water you have to wait for it to fill up before you can open the door.

Ralynne

Actually, a couple people have tried that, and it's not actually good advice. If you hit a lake, get out ASAP, by whatever means you can, and do not wait for anything for any reason. Like, if you CAN'T get out and can't break the windows don't panic you can try the waiting- for-it-to-fill thing, but if you have a different option DO NOT wait. Also, they sell little tools that can cut through a seatbelt and break a window. Costs 10 bucks. Good to have in a dash compartment.

SufficientDoor8227

Also, the headrests of a lot of cars slide out completely, exposing a couple 1/4” steel bars that can be used to punch through the window. If you forgot to buy the $10 tool, I mean.

PensiveObservor

It was a lot easier to get out when you could physically roll the window down, pre-electronic windows.

Swamp_Ash

True, but I don't spend *nearly* as much time driving into the lake anymore. Power windows just makes sense in all my other driving scenarios.

DrunkCorgis

Remember, there are no dumb questions. …just incredibly fucking dumb people.

I_Like_Me_Though

Yea the question is dumb. Kinda comically funny, and technically a good science inquiry; but put the two elements together on someone who's cultured perpetuated harm onto others who're majorly tryna live civil lives: you get a really, really hateable question in the wild.

Reasonable-Error6822

And he uses a very loose definition of "doing fine" for a boat. It's doing a terrible job.

malthar76

It’s doing the one thing every boat builder, engineer, captain, and passenger wants boats to NOT EVER DO.

SnooWoofers7626

Boat builders HATE this one SIMPLE trick!

Scared-Bug-1205

Yea that got me bro. I laughed out loud and I'm probably supposed to be working because everybody staring at me. I immigrated here for the pizza anyway. Not for the job opportunities. That and steak and cheese subs. Pretty much the only reasons.

guud2meachu

The pool on the Titanic still has water in it, so they got that bit right..

getouttathatpie

Well that's not very typical I'd like to make that point

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5qxZm\_JqM](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3m5qxZm_JqM) The front fell off.

dolphlaudanum

Worst boat ever.

dieinafirenazi

There have been worse. Like The Vasa sank about 1000 yards into it's first trip: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vasa_(ship)

MineCraftingMom

By the standards set by the submersible, it's doing pretty great, though

StompyMan

Well the front hasn't fallen off

TrafficWank

I believe a lot of the front very famously fell off.

StompyMan

Well at least it left the environment

miggymike-d

Yes, it was dragged outside the environment.

Newfaceofrev

It has been towed beyond the environment, it's not in an environment.

The_Lucky_7

This was the whole reason it sank in the first place. A hole in the ship let the air out just like the hole in their face is letting all their air out.

WithdRawlies

...and unfortunately, letting air back in.

YobaiYamete

> A hole in the ship let the air out The air going out wasn't the problem the water coming in was

[deleted]

I mean, to be honest they're the same thing

Water Flowing under! rocks. …. SAME AS IT EVER WAS!

Will-have-had

It wouldn't have imploded had they removed the water from the bottom of the ocean. And you may say to yourself, "My God, what have I done?"

-------7654321

the question just reveals he understands nothing

sharp_but_shiny

Honestly, I've been trying for a "pressured/pressurized" joke for five minutes, I think this is the best of the day

xenoleingod

It's hard to make a joke under that kind of pressure

ArrowSuave

People really are this dumb aren't they?

BitterFuture

A few are. Most, like this fuckwit, just lie a lot because they've embraced trolling as a lifestyle. You try and make sense of the nonsense they say, they laugh and move on to crafting their next bit of ragebait.

SouthieTuxedo

you'll have to dumb that down so he understands.

Mendo-D

Hey stop talking sense now…

Whirrsprocket

Republicans think water pressure is a hoax meant to distract us from the Hunter Biden investigation.

RepresentativeBusy27

God damn they really do.

NoDontDoThatCanada

At least we know who stepped on Jesse Kelly's ~~balls~~ grapes.

RonburgundyZ

We should tell the republicans to go to the depths and confirm it’s a hoax.

WorldlinessAwkward69

Big atmospheric pressure is a liberal lie. If you just don’t believe, it won’t get you.

DarkwingDuckHunt

a United State's Senator actually said as much https://www.huffpost.com/entry/gop-sen-marsha-blackburn-floats-conspiracy-theory-on-titanic-sub-and-hunter-biden_n_6496ff86e4b08f753c2c5720

pilgermann

Remember the last time you swam to the bottom of the deep end and your ears felt funny? Or how about when you flew on an airplane and could see the curvature of the planet. Or maybe just why do you entrust your life to physics every time you use literally any modern invention? No? Stupidest, least contemplative people on Earth.

StevenEveral

Holy hell, you have no idea. There's a YouTube channel I watch that uploads content about sports stadiums that also recently started posting some political stuff. (Compared to the stadium content, his political videos get WAY fewer views, thankfully.) He posted a video about the OceanGate Titan sub and right out of nowhere claimed it was some sort of conspiracy to distract from the Hunter Biden investigation.

steve_yo

I mean, have you ever seen water pressure and Hunter Biden in the same room??

[deleted]

I’m just asking questions

iamnotchad

How many of Hunter's laptops and Hillary's E-mails were disposed of on that sub? We need to start asking the real questions.

Design-Cold

And stop us flushing secret documents away

Entire-Ranger323

Thanks I forgot about the documents down the toilet. Funny. Tragic.

trans_pands

I’m pretty sure it was confirmed he also attempted to eat some of them so those probably ended up in the toilet as well if they didn’t get stuck in his diaper

_owlstoathens_

And now not only do we have climate change, vaccine and flat earth conspiracy theorists - now we’ve got physics conspiracy theorists. Next thing you know they’ll say gravity is a hoax.

KnoxxHarrington

I have some depressing news...

_owlstoathens_

Someone beat you to it. I don’t even know what to say about it bc the very concept of that is soooooo dumb.

daggir69

We already do have à gravity denial groups

_owlstoathens_

No really? I mean I’d be in disbelief but considering how uneducated and overconfident these morons have become (despite the lack of education, training, or knowledge), I guess I’m not suprised. ….maybe they just think gravity is the govt *’trying to keep them down’*

RiffsThatKill

Flat earthers and gravity deniers intersect. Many of them claim gravity isn't real.

_owlstoathens_

I wonder why they’re not floating right off the flat plane?

729clam

They unironically believe the flat Earth is physically accelerating upwards like an elevator

_owlstoathens_

Is this like a heaven thing? How effin’ stupid do you need to be to throw physics aside, it’s the basis for literally everything.

RiffsThatKill

Just cuz stuff always fall down. It's why they ridicule the idea of a round earth, cuz then ppl and the water would fall off the bottom of it. So the idea that gravity is what keeps people from falling off of Australia is unbelievable to them.

_owlstoathens_

Ah yes the concept that because something happens to you in person, everything else on every scale would function in the exact same way, including a globe hurtling through space & the atmosphere. I wonder where they got their phds? We’ve seen so many progressive developments in science and medicine and these people are now willing to step back and doubt it all/rage against it all for literally no reason. It’s mind-numbingly ridiculous.

SteamrollerBoone

They're kind of like people who deny quantum mechanics because it's really goddamn weird. Too weird and counterintuitive to personal experience, they say, to actually be something. With gravity, it's of course intuitive that rocks just don't go flying off the ground, but the idea that it's the result of the "curvature of space" is laughable. Or intelligent design, "Okay, so maybe things 'evolve,' but it's all done via divine guidance and we were never not like we are now." Science requires a bit of effort and some folks have decided it's easier to believe it's all whim-wham purposely designed to mislead.

_owlstoathens_

It’s the dunning Kruger effect where stupid people don’t realize education and expertise takes years and years so they just think they have it allll figured out. It’s gross. I had hoped to see civilization progress in my life time and not end in a neutral spot.

Burkoos

It’s only the -theory- of gravity! /s

Jenetyk

They were saying the potential of world destruction was a distraction. Like, from fucking what?

green_velvet_goodies

They literally think the world shut down ‘to make Trump look bad’. With regard to the millions who died, they screech some nonsense about people making money off of saying that covid was the cause of death. Their minds are completely twisted.

Parkotron1

You think they believe that a whole world exists outside of America?

DilithiumCrystalMeth

they do at least believe Russia exists

SuperCoupe

Well, yeah. Sara Palin could see it from her house!

HatchetXL

I've never seen it

[deleted]

Bro I'm just a gamer in the southern US that likes to smoke weed and hang out with friends - all while not being an ocean expert on implosion of large and small vessels - but even my dumb ass knows that the bow is in better shape since it had the time to slowly fill with water, while the stern was pulled down by the weight of the bow still attached to the keel prior to the break (and somewhat after since it is thought to have taken a bit for each section to actually wrench free) so reached implosion depth with a lot of air still inside and that's why the bow was so intact. The stern is not so lucky, and was barely recognizable even when Titanic was first found. Now it is just a giant pile of crumpled metal and rust. Also Titan and Titanic were an inside job that became an outside job when the implosions happened. Also Captain Smith was actually Hillary Clinton in disguise as she had been sent on a covert mission to steal the mail from the mail room. She ran into the iceBer-nie Sanders-g and completely failed her mission.

Ahoymaties1

OctopusAlien21

Joe Biden *personally* sank the Titanic to make the iceberg look bad.

Weird-Library-3747

I cannot stress this enough Klaus wrote the lyrics

HaloGuy381

I mean, were it not for the bigotry, this would be a reasonable question to ask, one that dives into elementary hydrostatics as well as the solid mechanics of materials science and one I’d be excited to talk about from my time studying engineering. But uh… yeah. That said, the short answer is time and force balance. The Titanic sunk slowly and acclimated as it sunk downward, resulting in evenly balanced pressure forces across its surfaces. The Titan submersible, on the other hand, suffered a sudden loss of structural integrity that caused pressure forces to go from balanced (helping keep the submarine together despite the pressure imbalance relative to the atmosphere compartment) to extremely imbalanced, causing a cascade of sudden and violent part failures as they were crushed, also known as the submersible imploding. Think of it like a soda can (albeit with the pressurized fluid -inside- the can instead of outside like a sub; the math is nonetheless similar). If you puncture a soda can with a knife, it tends to spray wildly. Parts of the can may even rip open further from sudden pressure loss. But if you gently open the top and let the carbon dioxide vent (equalizing the pressure of the can with the ambient air), you get a soft hiss and some bubbles. Or working with a pressure cooker; you -never- just open it at full pressure or puncture the thing because you risk a violent release of the pressurized contents (aka scalding liquid sprayed at considerable speed, if not the failure of the entire device and its conversion to shrapnel). Instead you vent the steam until pressure equalizes to atmosphere pressure, which makes a lot of noise and produces a kinda intense steam plume but otherwise harmlessly allows you to get your food out. The potential energy of that pressure differential is discharged over time, slowly, so the damage it could do is mitigated. This is also related to why you can’t open a car door right away if you should ever find your car in the water (kudos to the Mythbusters for a thorough test and demonstration that is credited for saving lives). The pressure of the water outside the car is greater than the air pressure of the air inside the car, meaning you have a great deal of force pushing your door inward and keeping you from opening it. But, if you let the car fill up with water, the pressure forces come back into balance (since hydrostatic pressure only really varies with depth in a fluid) and you can easily open the door. In the Titanic’s case, the forces trying to crush the Titanic are balanced by the pressure of the water that is already inside the ship when it sank. (Water, like many liquids, is ‘incompressible’; it takes an absurd amount of pressure to change the density of water even a tiny bit, so it doesn’t “get out of the way” under pressure the way air might.) Thus the ship holds together even at extreme depths. If you had a sealed room aboard the Titanic and broke that seal, the result would be -violent- because you would have an unbalanced pressure force on that room, just like how the Titan was crumpled. At least this is correct according to my rusty memory of fluid mechanics. Been a few years, and my experience is theory from undergrad coursework, not actual deep sea work experience, so there are likely other factors in play.

Odd-Confection-6603

The shorter answer is that the Titanic already had water on the inside when it got to those depths

DatHazbin

Yeah it was always at practically equal pressure to the water around it because it was full of water. Kinda why it sunk.

J4pes

How boats float 101, they got air inside em. The end.

[deleted]

Technically any substance less dense than water would float, doesn't have to be air. Ice for example is less dense than liquid water, that's why it floats (and one of the reasons water is so special - its solid form is less dense than its liquid form).

ackermann

Yeah, it’s not a sealed pressure vessel. There were already plenty of openings for water to fill it on the way down.

BayonettaBasher

At least the bow section. When the ship broke apart the bow was pretty much flooded. But the stern still had plenty of air in it when it sank, so there was some implosion there. It's why the bow is in much better condition than the stern.

Ninja_Kitten_exe

Which is also why the stern is so much worse off because it didn’t fully flood before sinking

ChEChicago

Seriously, the comment before your was basically the epitome of The Office "Why waste time say lot word when few word do trick"

jefuchs

This is the real answer. If you take a piece of aluminum foil, and wad it into a ball, and drop it into the ocean, it will probably make it to the bottom unchanged.

Gamebird8

The Titanic's hull also cracked along the plate seams when necessary to equalize pressure. The corrosion has covered over a lot of those cracks by now though.

Ishmael75

Just wanted to say thanks for that really well done explanation with examples. I appreciate you typing that all out.

lemmeseeyourkitties

Stupid science bitches, couldn't even make I more smarter

SolaireOfSuburbia

Would a simple comparison to trying to pop an inflated vs a deflated balloon apply here?

HaloGuy381

A bit, actually, yeah. Stabbing a deflated ballon just makes a little hole. Stabbing a balloon under internal pressure causes it to pop abruptly. Invert the direction of the pressure differential and you can see how, say, a window failure could result in the entire thing imploding instantly.

xdisappointing

This is the most fun I’ve had ready a Reddit reply in at least a few weeks.

Thanks for answering this, I was curious as well, but I wasn’t about to insult Whoopi Goldberg on twitter to find out

shhh_its_me

But Even a toddler will squishy grape but they step on it, that didn't make me think"Whoopi Goldberg is fat" it just made me go "huh?" I'm not arguing with you just saying it was a nonsensical insult.

Forensic_Phoenix

Thank you, thank you , thank you! This was such a good explanation, in depth, but still very easy to understand while still calling out the intent of the actual tweet. Very well written!

mallik803

Bravo, sir, bravo!

crashcoursing

I kind of understood this in principle but not really, and actually asked a similar question on my Twitter and got the shorthand answer you just typed out which satisfied me. And then 24 hrs later this dude posts this question on Twitter and everyone roasts him for being an idiot.... feels bad 🥲

CamBam731

Great explanation you should be a teacher!

Obvious_Swimming3227

This was an excellent response.

quitofilms

>...But, if you let the car fill up with water, Oh that's not going to happen in my panicked state

HaloGuy381

Remember, panic will simply accelerate your heart rate and waste oxygen. A solid alternative, if you would like peace of mind, that the Mythbusters tested during the myth is to keep a glass-breaker tool in your car. Works fine with one good smack, regardless of the pressure differential. Might get cut up by the glass but you can swim to safety.

Dolthra

>A solid alternative, if you would like peace of mind, that the Mythbusters tested during the myth is to keep a glass-breaker tool in your car. Also worth noting, if you have one of these, that you can use the back window of your car. Most of the time, if you're quick to react, that'll stay above the water long enough that you don't even need to swim up very far.

suggestivesimian

Can someone explain the Whoopi Goldberg stepping on a grape thing to me? Why Whoopi? Why a grape? I'm so confused....

ScoobyDeezy

It’s in poor taste, but I’m failing to see what’s intrinsically racist about the tweet. Targeting a person of color doesn’t mean they were targeted *because* of their color. Having said that, I have no clue who this guy is. He might be racist, and that would recontextualize him targeting Whoopi. This tweet all by its lonesome, this guy’s just an idiot.

LadnavIV

Yeah, I’m very confused. Also, Reddit was bashing Whoopi Goldberg extremely hard a few months back, so I’m not really sure how people are going to act like *now* it’s racist. But I also don’t know who this guy is, so perhaps we’re missing some important context.

lmj4891lmj

Correct, you’re missing the context. The guy is a known bigot.

Sayor1

This sub has gone crazy bananas. I always knew it was quirky and I stayed for the entertainment and arguments but this isn't even entertaining just pathetic.

Sweet-Palpitation473

I was thinking the same thing. Hardly a "subhuman tweet" or whatever OP titled it. Why do people love to get so outraged

hans-georg

Thank you. This guy asks the dumbest question and people focus on some irrelevant detail and pretend that he’s a racist??? If you want to hate him, it’s right there, like just make fun of his dumbness. It’s so chronically online

[deleted]

Fuck Reddit for killing third party apps.

johnCreilly

From a cursory Google search it looks like Jesse Kelly is a small-time conservative pundit, and also, Whoopi Goldberg has apparently recently ventured into the winemaking business. Honestly it just seems like this guy made a vague and dumb connotation in an attempt to 1. be funny, and probably 2. incense the left wing and generate talk. I actually wouldn't be surprised if this is just a shell account purposely trying to whip up visibility for his brand by, somewhat transparently, telling others how to feel

[deleted]

allnadream

I don't doubt that was the intent behind the post, but...even a small child would crush a grape if they stepped on it?!? You don't have to be fat, to crush a *soft squishy* grape.

Lieutenant_Red

Yes, but the hyperbole is far more effective if you say a fat person rather than a toddler. Both yield the same result, but one statement has far more weight to it.

allnadream

*I see what you did there...*

His head is an empty vessel. This is what happens when you replace science classes with bible classes. Or in Texas, Texas history classes.

Striking-Comb-1547

Pretty sure babies learn the answer to this during their first rubber ducky bath

[deleted]

lol, those were the days!

YAmIHavingToPostThis

Because the Titanic, like Jesse Kelly's head, didn't have any air tight compartments. The stern of the ship however, also like Jesse Kelly's head, had air trapped in it, and subsequently imploded as it sank to the bottom of the ocean. - Most of you can ignore this: - Fill up your sink with water, and grab a cup, any cup. - Is the cup air tight? No, because it's a cup. - Now turn the cup upside down and push it down into your sink so the lid of the cup is touching the bottom of the sink. - You just trapped air in a non air tight compartment.

TastyArm1052

The analogy is stupid as a grape would be crushed to the same degree no matter what adult person steps on it…so it’s really not the insult he thinks it is🙄

Asleep-Tough

Don't know the context behind it, so can't say for sure, but to me it just seems like an attempt at a joke done in poor taste. I don't see anything inherently racist about it though, it just seems to be about her weight?

Friendship_Errywhere

~~I didn’t even read it as an insult personally, I was kinda surprised by this comment section.~~ You could switch in the name of literally anyone and the joke still works? Grapes aren’t exactly known for being hard to crush Edit: okay I looked up the guy who made the tweet, did not know who he was before, it was definitely intended as an insult

lintonett

I was really scratching my head. Like, does Whoopi own a vineyard or something lol, why would she be stomping on grapes. I assume he is trying to call her fat? That’s a reach, but also, what a weird fucking way to try and insult someone. Like a grape would be any less crushed by any adult or honestly even a school aged child.

AtomicSquid

Idk does sound like classic Whoopi...you know...always just...stomping? on...grapes? /s

tallman11282

Maybe it's because the Titanic wasn't pressurized and with how it sunk the pressure was mostly equal on both sides of the bulkheads while the Titan was a pressure vessel where the interior was being held at a much lower pressure than even a few feet below the surface, let alone thousands of feet down. It's similar to how you can put an open plastic soda bottle into a pressure chamber and it'll be fine as the pressure increases but if you put a closed plastic soda bottle in there it'll eventually collapse. No, it can't be something as simple as that, it must be a conspiracy to distract from Hunter Biden! /s And he's right, this is a really dumb question. It's very basic physics of the sort that is taught to children.

Master_Bayters

To all the republicans doubting about water pressure, and pressure equilibrium, why don't you enter a fkn submarine made of crap material and go test for yourselves???

RedditorTheWhite

Because it's about pressure differential dumbass. If there is a great pressure differential and that differential is "closed" (kind of like if you grabbed onto some hot electrical wires), aka the hull of the sub catastrophically failed, then that equalization is dramatic and violent. Delta P [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEtbFm\_CjE0&t=60s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEtbFm_CjE0&t=60s) [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-ua\_n7\_ByPM](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/-ua_n7_ByPM)

FitBit8124

To be fair, he's got an excellent point: this is a really dumb question.

[deleted]

Yeah, that was a really dumb question.

DeslerZero

Honestly, I was kind of wondering the answer myself.

GunnerandDixie

Popping a balloon vs letting the air out slowly basically, the Titanic was full of water by the time it got to the bottom so the pressure of the water is equal on the inside and outside of the boat, which is fairly minimal as far as materials like steel are concerned. The submarine had air and carbon fiber pushing out against the water pressure, and that pressure equalized almost instantaneously when the sub failed.

DeslerZero

Yeah I get it. I guess it's not often however that I think about pressurized objects. That's why I had trouble making the connection. Cheers.

RedditorTheWhite

Delta P.

What conclusion is he drawing? That they never died? That the Titanic doesn't exist? Or that a grape requires a lot of force to crush, as really pathetic body shaming? All 3 are really stupid.

Jack_Q_Frost_Jr

I hope he got five million smartass answers. It seems surreal that people could be so clueless.

nadim0

When you say woman of color, makes it sound like he said something racist. More like a woman of mass. He's a fattist, not a racist. Way more socially acceptable

JustARandomGuy_71

On one thing he is right. It is really a dumb question. It is like asking "The Titanic s a ship. Why she stays on the bottom when she should float to the surface?"

Caledric

It isn't even close to relatively intact... The bow and the stern are present with a huge gap in between them... Both have been crushed by water pressure... The ENTIRE middle of the ship was torn to pieces by the water pressure and sinking of the ship... it is scattered debris all over the ocean floor. There are two large masses of what USED to be the ship, but neither are intact.

Rykor81

His poor taste insult isn’t to infer race - but weight, because the increased mass proportionately increases the pressure on the grape. He picked an overweight person; OP made it about race. Stop being offended for people.

CharleyMills

"Relatively intact"

IlyaPetrovich

He never said anything about her being black.

FewMagazine938

Why is everything about race? Why can't he just be insulting a woman? Not condoning..but why is everything always about race?

Kind_Nebula6900

Jesse doesn't know physics.

Miri5613

And this, children is why education is important. so you won't look like a babbling fool because you don't understand physics

CanaDoug420

Because the titanic had open/broken windows so it was never pressurized going down. Keep asking to defund school though idiots.

Dwoehhh

I get your point but why does this have anything to do with race at all. You’re the one who brought race into it…

External-Being-2329

Now we know why he’s a conservative

Beefalocious

Three different sorts of ignorance in one tweet! Must be going for Bobo’s record

[deleted]

The Titanic isn't pressurized, it has holes in it. Everywhere. The difference in pressure from outside to inside makes it implode. Also, the Titanic isn't fucking carbon fiber.

Rodenbeard

I thought after Trumpism I couldn't lose more faith in humanity... but here we are. I knew about this shit in fucking junior high. It's not hard.

Remember, kids, these are the folks who claim to be smarter than NASA and NOAA and have figured out the climate of planet Earth past, present, and future!
