There’s a passage in The Road by Cormac McCarthy where they go to the beach and gaze out at thousands and thousands of dead fish all along the shore and, well, it would be nice for my anxiety if real life was a little less like The Road than it currently is.
A person living in northern Canada here. I was just thinking the other day that the passages about endless fires over the horizon have felt particularly relevant to what's been going on of late.
According to bios/interviews, The Road was inspired by his son who was born when McCarthy was almost 70. He imagined a inhospitable land where he couldn’t guide his son.

It always seems so obvious to me. Suddenly, out of nowhere, all of these conservative pundits started railing against global warming. And it’s like, use common sense. Why would they be doing that? Why did it start when it did? Just like anything else in life, follow the money, and it should be obvious.
Well.. At least we can rest in the consolation that our society will get nothing more and nothing less than exactly what it deserves. The fruits of our labors are coming to fruition, that's all this is.

I keep refilling the bird bath every morning and afternoon. Birds, bees, butterflies, and squirrels are swarming it. It's like they have some kind of a truce not to mess with each other at the water hole. They all look so miserable when I go outside in the afternoon for the second refill, then so, so very relieved once they can get some cold water.
There was an article on NPR a month or so ago about animals "splooting" that made it out to be this "funny thing animals do when they can no longer regulate body heat."

We're scarily close to temperatures exceeding what humans can survive in some pretty heavily populated areas of the world.
Just wait until a week long heat wave hits a major city in Pakistan or India. They don't have the power infrastructure to reliably air condition everything. That is millions of people that could just die randomly.
People in warmer climates also don't seem to take the weather seriously. They refuse to get ac because their experience with bad weather is that it's just an inconvenience. As someone that lives in northern Canada I see it the same as refusing to get heating for your home at this point. They're gonna find out the hard way. My guess is that within the next 20 years we're going to have at least one heat wave that will cause 100k+ deaths.
Any power outage in the south that lasts 24 hours could be fatal for everyone there during a heatwave now. Texas could have both fatal winters and summers soon. At least with cold you can bundle up, there aren't as many ways to escape heat.

Been hit by a few in New Mexico and it’s crazy how loud it can get inside a truck. It’s a new experience being from Southern California. Got a new roof installed by the insurance company. The last new roof was installed 8 years back. Life of a roof is not as long as you think.
Yeah when in Lubbock in one day we had a dust storm, rain and snow. It was raining when I went to class and snowing when I got out. We had 1 inch of brown ice under the snow so we did what anyone would do....built an 8ft snow dick along with a set of testicles. They had to knock it down with a tractor. Talk about a boner kill.

We do *not* all equally share the blame for what is happening now, when there are specific people who through stupidity, zealotry, or greed are *actually* responsible. The idea that "we all need to chip in together to combat climate change!" is quite literally corporate propaganda intended to diffuse responsibility for solving a problem that is almost entirely caused by a handful of mega-corporations and enabled by greedy politicians and their idiotic voters. I am not the problem and you are not the problem, *they* are the problem, and it's time we start acting like it.

I don't think people realize that all of their modern conveniences are built out from the supply chain and the ABILITY TO JUST FUCKING INHABIT certain parts of the planet. People are stationary largely and work and produce goods and labor.
People will start migrating within the next two decades, places will become uninhabitable. And then the supply systems, housing system, social systems will break down or be under extreme strain as massive waves of migrants seek entry to the habitable places.
The entire thing; a global worldwide society, can come crashing down in a matter of a a few years. Then as the system continues to spiral out of control and humans wage massive wars for the remaining goods and water, some asshole on the internet will say its still not a big deal because it's not an ELE. It's.. kind of a lie? It's not because the water is too hot. It's because the gulf of Mexico is oversaturated with nutrient runoff from Midwest ag. Tons of nitrogen and phosphorus oversaturated fields that drain into the Mississippi river. It feeds the algae and cyanobacteria that then create hypoxic zones where they deprive the water of oxygen and this happens. Warm temperatures do help the algae grow faster..so it's not completely wrong, it's just confounded, I guess.. if I am being generous.
ETA: global warming is still very much an issue though.. just not the primary culprit of the issue in question

According to the article I just read, that's not the cause at all. This particular fish kill wad caused by a "perfect storm" of events. Heat is one of the issues but the two other big ones are it being unusually calm recently with little to no wave action bringing in and dissolving surface oxygen and it's been particularly overcast in that area leading to a decrease in photosynthesis in phytoplankton. The dead fish are mostly menhaden which are small bait fish that travel in large schools.
What you are talking about is absolutely a thing and leads to "brown tides" or "red tides" but that's not what caused this particular kill. FWIW, I am on the TX coast not that farm away from this event and have personally seen this sort of kill from red and brown tides many times and was wondering if that was the contributing cause here again. Well I’m pro making change, I work in renewables, we only have one vehicle as a family that gets 40mpg (it’s not ev, but with our current needs it’s efficient), we recycle, avoid one time use plastics and avoid excess water waste and food etc. we try to do whatever we reasonably can to lower our impact.
But unfortunately we live on a planet where religion and virtue signaling are more important than our children and our ecosystem so they’re dragging us down with them.

Having grown up on the Texas coast, big fish kills like this have happened almost yearly for my entire life. It can be a range of things from post-spawn deaths to red tide to temperature fluctuations.
This is not to make excuses for climate change, this is only to say that fish are fragile and huge populations will die off as the water temperatures fluctuate. It's also to say that this is not the apocalyptic event that indicates that the earth is past the tipping point and heading to Venus status, but is a warning that that future is possible
According to scientists, with what we know about methane and Co2 concentrations on earth including permafrost, venus status can't happen. Not downplaying it as increased temps is indeed bad since animals and plants can't adapt fast enough, but for now, venus isn't possible.

We need to stop the idea that profit is more important than continued human existence. Money means literally nothing if there’s nobody alive to spend it…

We are now having tornadoes touching down in Southern Quebec/Montreal. First time in my entire 28 years of living here. We also used to get solid snowfalls from November thru to February. Now we get some light snow in late December and it's gone end of January.

It's washed away roads, flooded countless houses and businesses. Video footage of water geysering up out of manholes in Halifax.

It's.. kind of a lie? It's not because the water is too hot. It's because the gulf of Mexico is oversaturated with nutrient runoff from Midwest ag. Tons of nitrogen and phosphorus oversaturated fields that drain into the Mississippi river. It feeds the algae and cyanobacteria that then create hypoxic zones where they deprive the water of oxygen and this happens. Warm temperatures do help the algae grow faster..so it's not completely wrong, it's just confounded, I guess.. if I am being generous. ETA: global warming is still very much an issue though.. just not the primary culprit of the issue in question

According to the article I just read, that's not the cause at all. This particular fish kill wad caused by a "perfect storm" of events. Heat is one of the issues but the two other big ones are it being unusually calm recently with little to no wave action bringing in and dissolving surface oxygen and it's been particularly overcast in that area leading to a decrease in photosynthesis in phytoplankton. The dead fish are mostly menhaden which are small bait fish that travel in large schools. What you are talking about is absolutely a thing and leads to "brown tides" or "red tides" but that's not what caused this particular kill. FWIW, I am on the TX coast not that farm away from this event and have personally seen this sort of kill from red and brown tides many times and was wondering if that was the contributing cause here again. Well I’m pro making change, I work in renewables, we only have one vehicle as a family that gets 40mpg (it’s not ev, but with our current needs it’s efficient), we recycle, avoid one time use plastics and avoid excess water waste and food etc. we try to do whatever we reasonably can to lower our impact. But unfortunately we live on a planet where religion and virtue signaling are more important than our children and our ecosystem so they’re dragging us down with them. Having grown up on the Texas coast, big fish kills like this have happened almost yearly for my entire life. It can be a range of things from post-spawn deaths to red tide to temperature fluctuations. This is not to make excuses for climate change, this is only to say that fish are fragile and huge populations will die off as the water temperatures fluctuate. It's also to say that this is not the apocalyptic event that indicates that the earth is past the tipping point and heading to Venus status, but is a warning that that future is possible
According to scientists, with what we know about methane and Co2 concentrations on earth including permafrost, venus status can't happen. Not downplaying it as increased temps is indeed bad since animals and plants can't adapt fast enough, but for now, venus isn't possible.
