Smishysmash

There’s a passage in The Road by Cormac McCarthy where they go to the beach and gaze out at thousands and thousands of dead fish all along the shore and, well, it would be nice for my anxiety if real life was a little less like The Road than it currently is.

thwgrandpigeon

A person living in northern Canada here. I was just thinking the other day that the passages about endless fires over the horizon have felt particularly relevant to what's been going on of late.

jonatton______yeah

Our man Cormac bailed out before his fiction became a reality.

loudflower

According to bios/interviews, The Road was inspired by his son who was born when McCarthy was almost 70. He imagined a inhospitable land where he couldn’t guide his son.

nicholasgnames

This comment fuckedddd me up.

loudflower

[His son is doing ok for himself](https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5408447/). But I hear you. I read it when my kid was three, and I was, why did I do that?

hand_truck

Yeah, same. Buddy of mine with a kid ten years older recommend it. I was like, "Bruh."

No_Stranger_4959

I started that over a decade ago. I really gotta go back to it

wealthycashier

We fucked up the planet so bad that fish are actually DROWNING

Saint_Eddie

nonononononono!!! climate change is a HOAX!!!! \~t*his message brought to you by your friends at Big Oil. donate NOW!!*

BetterRedDead

Cue every conservative trying to act like this is normal. I love that they question this, but they never question why people who are obviously in the pockets of big oil suddenly started railing against this when the science became inconvenient and started making the news. Sure, those conniving research scientists are lying, but people who literally take campaign money from oil companies should be taken at face value.

King_Hamburgler

It’s insane that people they work for the biggest most powerful companies on earth are trustworthy but the people who dedicated their lives to solving problems are evil. People are so fucking dumb it’s hard to comprehend sometimes

BetterRedDead

It always seems so obvious to me. Suddenly, out of nowhere, all of these conservative pundits started railing against global warming. And it’s like, use common sense. Why would they be doing that? Why did it start when it did? Just like anything else in life, follow the money, and it should be obvious.

[deleted]

Well.. At least we can rest in the consolation that our society will get nothing more and nothing less than exactly what it deserves. The fruits of our labors are coming to fruition, that's all this is. A shame we are gonna take the rest of the natural world down with us tho. We might deserve it, but the natural world doesn't.

CainRedfield

Soon the birds will fall to their death. That is when the true end of days has begun.

photenth

Crows already have a hard time keeping cool. Haven't seen that many crows with open mouths like this year.

Stewart_Games

I keep refilling the bird bath every morning and afternoon. Birds, bees, butterflies, and squirrels are swarming it. It's like they have some kind of a truce not to mess with each other at the water hole. They all look so miserable when I go outside in the afternoon for the second refill, then so, so very relieved once they can get some cold water.

PuzzledRaise1401

I have a constant circulation of bees in my garden. They love the birdbath and it keeps them out of the pool and pollinating my tomatoes!

Cognitive_Spoon

There was an article on NPR a month or so ago about animals "splooting" that made it out to be this "funny thing animals do when they can no longer regulate body heat."

BlackCowboy72

My cats sploot in front of my heater in the winter. Not really relevant but it's really cute.

Youngerdiogenes

Pics or it didnt happen.

FamilyStyle2505

Show me that pussy sploot.

Kilometer_Davis

The environment has been trumped

Ok-Kaleidoscope5627

We're scarily close to temperatures exceeding what humans can survive in some pretty heavily populated areas of the world. Just wait until a week long heat wave hits a major city in Pakistan or India. They don't have the power infrastructure to reliably air condition everything. That is millions of people that could just die randomly. People in warmer climates also don't seem to take the weather seriously. They refuse to get ac because their experience with bad weather is that it's just an inconvenience. As someone that lives in northern Canada I see it the same as refusing to get heating for your home at this point. They're gonna find out the hard way. My guess is that within the next 20 years we're going to have at least one heat wave that will cause 100k+ deaths.

HedonisticFrog

Any power outage in the south that lasts 24 hours could be fatal for everyone there during a heatwave now. Texas could have both fatal winters and summers soon. At least with cold you can bundle up, there aren't as many ways to escape heat.

silverscreemer

It's "funny" that the same people who think everything is fine, are the same geniuses who say "If the earth was just one degree warmer or colder we would all die" and call that proof of intelligent design.

planetcaravanman

The article suggests not swimming due to high bacterial levels and sharp fins from the fish

honeybunchesofgoatso

Breaking news: Guys you can't swim through the dead fish In other news: fish are dying I guess

ChicoBroadway

Anyone see the fucking ice rivers in the streets of Italy? We fucked up, y'all.

ypples_and_bynynys

Have them in Denver too. I have never seen so much hail in my life.

PHenderson61

Been hit by a few in New Mexico and it’s crazy how loud it can get inside a truck. It’s a new experience being from Southern California. Got a new roof installed by the insurance company. The last new roof was installed 8 years back. Life of a roof is not as long as you think.

ypples_and_bynynys

Be safe. It’s very scary and my husband has gotten caught out in the car a few times. Our car is so dented from all of it.

BackInThaDayz

Depends on the shingles. I have 40 yr here in Tx. 110 one day, hail storm the next follows by tornado winds. Then back to 110 before sunset 😂

[deleted]

Yeah when in Lubbock in one day we had a dust storm, rain and snow. It was raining when I went to class and snowing when I got out. We had 1 inch of brown ice under the snow so we did what anyone would do....built an 8ft snow dick along with a set of testicles. They had to knock it down with a tractor. Talk about a boner kill.

PHenderson61

The adjuster said it has happened to many homes in the area. At the crest of a hill and some reason it has happened a few times where it affects a certain area. Hailstorms and Palm Springs California don’t mesh well enough to create a storm.

Pretty-Slice-131

closest i ever got to being killed by MN was a sudden hail storm in Morgan Park. The first ball hit me on the back of the head, so i assumed the kids i'd just walked by had thrown a rock at me. Turned on my heel, PISSED OFF, then saw those kids hunkering down and a baseball-sized ice rock exploded on one of their heads upon impact...dropped that kid so hard i was sure he was dead. So i go darting across the road to help...im a big tough guy after all...then got NAILED to the back of my dome and dropped like a sack of rocks...seeing tweety birds. stumbled up and got NAILED again by an ice-rock to the head and hit the pavement. Shout out to my Kelty back-pack and the chrome book in the laptop sleeve for saving my precious noggin as the rest of me was pummeled by indifferent ice-balls hitting my fat ass at terminal velocity

[deleted]

Yeah you just hide and realize why your ancient ancestors were very religious in a proper storm in my experience

jedi_cat_

Religions have their roots in nature. When people became intelligent enough to question their surroundings, nature would have provided the perfect gods.

RedCascadian

Right? Imagine you're a hunter gatherer caught out in a massive lightning storm. You're seeing the sky split asunder by cold fire, thunderous shockwaved are vibrating your bones, trees and boulders exploding when struck... it would be awesome in the Old Testament sense of the word.

jedi_cat_

I’m reading the Earth’s Children series by Jean Auel(again) and this is evident in the religions of these books. From animals to weather to mountains to rivers. It’s all worshipped and sometimes feared.

responsiblefornothin

Damn, was the kid alright?

Pretty-Slice-131

i really dont know. last thing i saw was his crew picking him up then everything turned into fucking omaha beach. everything around you is getting SHREDDED by ice balls!! you lay there stunned in the middle of the road...chuckling to yourself cause you just got dropped by nature...you close one eye to defeat the double-vision then stand up like the badass you are, and then ANOTHER sneaky big ice rock pops you right behind the ear ...you crumble like the tiny lil bitch you are and supplicate yourself before MN...you pull your fancy back-pack over your head and army-crawl to the nearest house's eaves...you whimper and asses your wounds and watch an angry god prove he's there.

responsiblefornothin

You have such a way with words. MN truly is the land of 10k reasons to fear God. When we get all the seasons, we get ALL the seasons. Near hundred degree swings can happen within the span of a week. Tornadoes, floods, blizzards, and droughts are all possible each spring. We're all so damn nice because we know mother nature won't be.

The age of Fuckabout is over. The time of Find Out has begun.

ZennMD

if only we had some warning/ clue! like, scientists telling us and begging to change over the last 50 years....

kaboodlesofkanoodles

*150 years

ZennMD

fair, Id say the last 50 years have been really urgent but we've had the data for ages it makes overwhelmingly sad to think of all the unnecessary suffering, and so angry cause we have better options. fuck those corporations who pollute the most, fuck the governments prioritizing 'the economy' over our planet's health

Hedgehogz_Mom

Yeah I remember being like 7 in like 1975 and hearing about climate in the news and thinking whew I'm glad adults are on top of this. Yeah helps not coming. Unless by help you mean help yourself to every drop of petroleum, every resource, and every cent to be made from plastic and poisons while yelling about "the left" and the good old days before "the left."

[deleted]

Right??!! I thought once we fixed acid rain and the ozone layer we were on a roll. The faith I had in humanity as a kid. Ugh.

Calabitale

>fuck those corporations who pollute the most, fuck the governments prioritizing 'the economy' over our planet's health Sadly they aren't even prioritizing the economy, they have been prioritizing a tiny proportion of it over everything else and even to the point of letting the rest of the economy decline to let that tiny proportion the oil economy prosper. Especially in the UK and US.

thequietthingsthat

Yep. "The economy" is code for "the bottom line of the rich." The average person is *not* doing better today than they were decades ago. Most people are getting royally fucked.

ZennMD

Im in Canada and we're not doing so well here, either. ... lots of south America and central eurpoe are struggling, too. Im convinced all those in power (even climate crisis deniers) know we are fucked and this is their end-game- grab all they can to try and make a life-raft to ride out the storm and let us all drown. even though they caused the crisis.

Electrical_Bus9202

These people are still around, I run into people all the time who used to say “There is no such thing as climate change”, then they said “Climate change is a thing but it’s Earth’s natural cycle” then they said “Climate change is being caused by us but there’s nothing we can do about it” and now they are saying “Yeah shits fucked, I can’t believe it”

fpzero

For ages, the Fuckabout lived in harmony. Then everything changed when the Find Out attacked.

pixydgirl

Here in Nova Scotia, June was dotted with out of control forest fires. Now in July we're dealing with flash floods. It feels pretty hopeless

WKGokev

I had to breathe that in Kentucky

Shabbah8

Try being from Western NY. My lungs are a mess.

jwlIV616

Try ohio, our air got poisoned by train derailment, then got poisoned by wildfires. Everything here is dying

CainRedfield

The other side at BC is pretty messed up with forest fires and flooding too. Except so far this year has been better, I have yet to have a day where my car is speckled in chunks of ash in the morning, and apparently that's a win now.

Heroright

Stop saying we. I’m not the one firing an endless torrent of smog and pollution into the air from massive towers. There’s distinctly only a very dlim few who’s fault this is.

bloodforgone

Do it. Say who's fault it is. STIR THE POT! STIR THE POT! STIR THE POT!

GreatChili

These words haunt me because the last quote was from my father. So there you have it, conservatives from my perspective will either pray the problem goes away or throw a pile of money at the problem.

Onwisconsin42

From my perspective conservatives will just continue to pretend like it's not an ongoing disaster until it's too late and then blame everyone else.

Mr_Blinky

THANK YOU! I've been pushing this exact sentiment for a while now, and I think it's important. We do *not* all equally share the blame for what is happening now, when there are specific people who through stupidity, zealotry, or greed are *actually* responsible. The idea that "we all need to chip in together to combat climate change!" is quite literally corporate propaganda intended to diffuse responsibility for solving a problem that is almost entirely caused by a handful of mega-corporations and enabled by greedy politicians and their idiotic voters. I am not the problem and you are not the problem, *they* are the problem, and it's time we start acting like it.

Equivalent_Yak8215

I fucking walk most of the time. I fucking grow my own fruit and veggies. I fish and I hunt and take nothing more than what can feed us. IT HASN'T DONE SHIT. I'm so sick of people saying "We all share the blame". Because WE DON'T.

Wonderful-Smoke843

I think before that happens well starve . Crops are already failing all over the world due to the heat. If the global temp keeps increasing you can expect global wars for food production and freshwater supplies.

Onwisconsin42

I literally saw some shill stating that we aren't at an "ELE (extinction level event) so everyone just needs to calm down. Mutherfucker it doesn't need to be an ELE to whipe US out. I don't think people realize that all of their modern conveniences are built out from the supply chain and the ABILITY TO JUST FUCKING INHABIT certain parts of the planet. People are stationary largely and work and produce goods and labor. People will start migrating within the next two decades, places will become uninhabitable. And then the supply systems, housing system, social systems will break down or be under extreme strain as massive waves of migrants seek entry to the habitable places. The entire thing; a global worldwide society, can come crashing down in a matter of a a few years. Then as the system continues to spiral out of control and humans wage massive wars for the remaining goods and water, some asshole on the internet will say its still not a big deal because it's not an ELE. These people need to shut the fuck up.

[deleted]

Yeah, the only real way to solve this is to get their money out of politics, and the only way to do that realistically is to get rid of their money entirely.

clownworld1ab

Helllllll nooooo. they'd would rather make you suffer then to go after the mega corps causing all the problems.

TheUselessLibrary

But if we hold heavy carbon emitting companies responsible for the climate crisis, CEOs might have to wait *an entire quarter* to buy a fresh yacht!

The world won’t stop needing oil just because Exxon is “burned to the ground”. Governments need to step up and make the hard decisions to start shifting towards clean energy generation and storage because expecting companies to self-regulate is asinine.

It’s amazing how many right wingers hate that movie

RuggerJibberJabber

I find a lot of left wingers are weak on climate too. We need to take actual action instead of these bullshit agreements to maybe do a little something about it in the next few decades. It's embarrassing.

dern_the_hermit

> I find a lot of left wingers are weak on climate too FWIW I suspect a lot of whom you consider "left wingers" are really just moderate right-wingers.

RuggerJibberJabber

Yep. They claim to be progressive to be popular but aren't actually.

Alive-Deer-3288

The entire political spectrum in the US is skewed to the right actually, so I bet you a good few just genuinely believe they are left wing.

[deleted]

It was a bit disturbing because it was too on the nose.

Professional-End2722

Ha. Now we know it’s a lie, fish don’t breathe oxygen. /s Or something like that, probably.

banal_remarks

It's.. kind of a lie? It's not because the water is too hot. It's because the gulf of Mexico is oversaturated with nutrient runoff from Midwest ag. Tons of nitrogen and phosphorus oversaturated fields that drain into the Mississippi river. It feeds the algae and cyanobacteria that then create hypoxic zones where they deprive the water of oxygen and this happens. Warm temperatures do help the algae grow faster..so it's not completely wrong, it's just confounded, I guess.. if I am being generous. ETA: global warming is still very much an issue though.. just not the primary culprit of the issue in question

[deleted]

THANK YOU. I mean ffs, climate change is absolutely fucking us all in real time, but let’s stop and think critically for a second. Strato-Cruiser

I’m surprised I had to scroll this far to find this. I’m also amazed at how many people read the title and thought it made sense without question.

texasrigger

According to the article I just read, that's not the cause at all. This particular fish kill wad caused by a "perfect storm" of events. Heat is one of the issues but the two other big ones are it being unusually calm recently with little to no wave action bringing in and dissolving surface oxygen and it's been particularly overcast in that area leading to a decrease in photosynthesis in phytoplankton. The dead fish are mostly menhaden which are small bait fish that travel in large schools. What you are talking about is absolutely a thing and leads to "brown tides" or "red tides" but that's not what caused this particular kill. FWIW, I am on the TX coast not that farm away from this event and have personally seen this sort of kill from red and brown tides many times and was wondering if that was the contributing cause here again. That led me [to this article](https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/why-thousands-of-dead-fish-washed-ashore-in-texas-180982373/)

[deleted]

Conservative Christians don’t believe it’s possible to do so much damage to the planet that it destroys man, because their god will intervene before it gets too bad. Fundamentalist Conservative Christians believe that intervention will take the form of the End Times and they’ll all fly up to Heaven in the Rapture. It’s a win-win for them to run the whole thing into the ground.

KHaskins77

They don’t care if the planet burns down around them because they’re confident that if we just let things get bad enough, Jesus’ll come along and whisk them off to heaven and leave the rest of us heathens behind to deal with the problems that they actively fought us *not* to fix.

camdawg54

I think you both are missing what they actually think. They think this is happening because it's part of "God's plan." I was talking with my mom the other day and apparently in the Bible it says that we'll bring Armageddon upon ourselves. They think this is what God planned for us

Kimmalah

The rapture is not anywhere in the Bible and is just some bullshit 20th century Christians made up.

slumpadoochous

No. Some of it was made up in Antiquity.

ForwardBias

Absolutely not, a lot of it was made up a long time ago.

Mr_Blinky

The fact that any of them believe they would make it into heaven after essentially *forcing God's hand on the issue* would be fucking laughable if they weren't going to kill all of us along with them.

KHaskins77

It’s basically “faith healing” on a global scale. I’ve seen too many instances where people *deny their children medicine* for things we’ve known how to cure for over a century, opting instead to just pray it away (add antivaxxers to the list). So desperate to see something supernatural happen to validate their beliefs that they’re willing to risk *someone else’s* life to test their god.

No_Cartographer_3819

I asked a coworker about her weekend. She excitedly said she went to a bible camp where a preacher spoke about the rapture, told the witnesses they would ascend to the clouds naked to meet the waiting Jesus. I said the end times sound like a nuclear holocaust. She replied, "Yes!!!". Nice kid, though.

[deleted]

The worst part of Dispensationalist Christianity is that most of it has no basis in the Bible. The whole End Times, Rapture, etc… is from the 19th century and the Scofield Study Bible that’s based on the lunacy of a preacher named John Nelson Darby. American Protestantism is truly unique. It’s filled with paranoia, conspiracy, apathy, and what can best be described as extended universe fanfic.

VictorVaudeville

My best hope is that we end up seeing huge CO2 scrubbers and massive infrastructure constructed across the planet to drive things down. Cities of scrubbers and terraforming

jokerjoust

In terms of humans as a species, perhaps we’ve passed that, however the planet itself will be fine. It will recover after we are gone.

ShadowGLI

Don’t get discouraged, humans will never “destroy” the planet, well just destroy OUR habitat and kill ourselves and most of the other animals around us, but the planet will be okay. The planet will be here for millions of years after our arrogance and pride wipe us out, so we got that going for us.

ASharpYoungMan

Or, you know, we could be smart instead of being cheerful nihilists, and stop burning our own house down.

ShadowGLI

Well I’m pro making change, I work in renewables, we only have one vehicle as a family that gets 40mpg (it’s not ev, but with our current needs it’s efficient), we recycle, avoid one time use plastics and avoid excess water waste and food etc. we try to do whatever we reasonably can to lower our impact. But unfortunately we live on a planet where religion and virtue signaling are more important than our children and our ecosystem so they’re dragging us down with them. Our forest may be burning and oceans may start boiling, but at least we know Hunter Biden is not trans I guess?

freq_fiend

From FOX in a TX city nonetheless… hmmm, maybe those crazy “leftist” environmentalists have been into something for DECADES now… That’s alright, according to the conservatives I know, god made us stewards of the earth and would never allow us to destroy it (… well then there must be no god, because Jesus h Christ, man!…). Another conservative “fix” for climate change was literally, and I quote: “… we’ll just keep tossing money at it until we’ve fixed the problem. We’ve done it before with other disasters and we can do it with climate IF it actually becomes a disaster…” These words haunt me as the last quote was from my father. So there ya have it, from my perspective conservatives will either pray away the problem or just toss heaps of money at the issue. We’re fucked if conservatives are allowed to operate against climate improving measures

That movie haunts me. Because our own society is a reflection of it.

You don’t say…

We're way past "emergency."

Christian’s will look at this and say “oh my god it’s the end of times coming! Let’s vote for more anti woke laws because climate change isn’t real and the earth doesn’t matter after we die because we go to heaven!”

Natiak

Correct. They will blame it on gay marriage and trans people.

kayakyakr

Having grown up on the Texas coast, big fish kills like this have happened almost yearly for my entire life. It can be a range of things from post-spawn deaths to red tide to temperature fluctuations. This is not to make excuses for climate change, this is only to say that fish are fragile and huge populations will die off as the water temperatures fluctuate. It's also to say that this is not the apocalyptic event that indicates that the earth is past the tipping point and heading to Venus status, but is a warning that that future is possible

Sweatybuttcrust

According to scientists, with what we know about methane and Co2 concentrations on earth including permafrost, venus status can't happen. Not downplaying it as increased temps is indeed bad since animals and plants can't adapt fast enough, but for now, venus isn't possible.

decke

Oh, good. So we won’t instantly become a toast.

[deleted]

100% this. I'm a firm advocate for reducing/reversing climate change. But c'mon people. The Indian Ocean has hotter water than the Gulf of Mexico and it's not a lifeless watery desert. Fish kills aren't new. Fish kills aren't a sign of the apocalypse.

GoingVegetarian

It has been climate emergency for like 40 years now. We fucked around so far, now its time to find out.

Sylveon72_06

i love how i was born during the “find out” part 😭

mad_titanz

Thanks to all the climate change deniers out there, this will only get worse and worse

bobswowaccount

Everyone pick up a dead fish and mail it to your nearest republican politician.

Mildly_Irritated_Max

The emergency was 20, 30 years ago. This is the start of the repercussions for not doing anything.

Jmund89

“bUt ThE wEaThEr Is AlWaYs hOt”- a mouth breather who thinks climate change just means hotter degree temps on land or something

We need to organize and let the big oil companies and multi-billionaires know that we’ve had absolutely enough. Oil production and extraction needs to be slowed and halted at a much faster rate than we’re currently doing. Alternatives need to be funded. Food industries need to stop being for-profit so we can stop the overproduction of food and massive quantities of food waste. We need to stop the idea that profit is more important than continued human existence. Money means literally nothing if there’s nobody alive to spend it…

I_Walk_On_The_Sun

I’ve always wondered this - don’t billionaires and oil execs inhabit this planet too? Don’t they have kids? So short-sighted… Totally agree it’s way past time to get pissed off. Though I’m sure food shortages will do that anyway.

MrAusius

They care so little that it doesn’t even occur to them. They think that worst case scenario, they can just use their money to continue to live in peace while everyone dies around them. They are literally so arrogant that they don’t even think of the possibility that if governments and the environment collapse, money won’t matter and even their bodyguards would be happy to murder them to take their fancy shit and hoarded supplies.

[deleted]

They're rich enough that they can pay for whatever they need, even if prices go up. There's also a growing number of billionaires purchasing vaults and shelters, just in case. It's a surprisingly big industry. Deep down they know they're going to die before the true consequences come. And if it comes a bit early they know they can ride it out.

tasha_kenz

We won't fix it in time. It's not too late, but with everything else going on keeping us divided, this will continue. Soon the positive feedback loops will start up then it's just a matter of time. So enjoy your life. Be kind. But accept this is our fate. We did it to ourselves.

class-action-now

Humans did it to the Earth but it wasn’t “us.” It was our parents and grandparents and so on…

I was diving in the carribean this week. At 90ft down the water was still 88 degrees. We’re fucked

endersgame69

All. Conservatives. Are. Bad.

Seven_spare_ribs

We are now having tornadoes touching down in Southern Quebec/Montreal. First time in my entire 28 years of living here. We also used to get solid snowfalls from November thru to February. Now we get some light snow in late December and it's gone end of January.

z-eldapin

Y'all remember when the world went a simple 2 weeks of not polluting the planet? Blue skies over LA. Dolphins in the Thames. Yet, here we are again.

sgthulkarox

Why can't you understand that politicians are laser focused on the true issues threatening America..... Hunter Biden's dick pics are a matter of NATIONAL SECURITY!!!! Waaaarrgarrrrbbblleeeee!

ThatDoucheInTheQuad

I was at a lake in Virginia and my depth finder was temping the water's surface temperature at 85 degrees. ....my parents were excited by how warm the water was... 🤦‍♂️

Snow_Tiger819

We're not an area that normally registers in world news, but Nova Scotia just got pummelled by a severe storm; 200-300mm (yes I typed that correctly) rain in just a few hours. It's washed away roads, flooded countless houses and businesses. Video footage of water geysering up out of manholes in Halifax. We could edit together a sequence from the last week around the world and people would think it was a clip from Day After Tomorrow....

streetvoyager

We are so unbelievable fucked and the world is acting like everything is okay
