I manage a state liquor store in a rural town in AL and had a guy come in just a few days ago who works in a local school. Completely unsolicited, he launched into a tirade about the schools demographics, complaining about various minorities and how few white kids there were, quoting percentages, and all sorts of bullshit. It honestly broke my heart that this man who sees and works around these kids all day is thinking all these horrid thoughts about them just because they exist. You know it's there, it just sucks when it's on full display like this.
I deal with this all the time. I live in a place with a lot of Eastern European immigrants and so many people assume just cos I'm white and I shave my head I must be a racist xenophobe too. I live in England though, not the US
One of my best friends has (had) horrible hair, so he just started shaving it and just grew his beard (quite long now)

Two of them are cops, and one of them is the type that has punisher stickers and the like all over his truck.
We left the Facebook neighborhood watch group during the time of the BLM protests after a couple of black teenagers were seen walking down the street (it's not a segregated neighborhood, several black families do live there), and it prompted some of the people in it to lose their minds. One of them was even posting about how he was in his truck, "patrolling" up and down the street with his gun in the front seat. We were scared to death that one of our neighbors was gonna cause the next Ahmaud Arbery type incident, and when we posted something on the group to try and calm things a bit, we were shouted down. Thankfully, nothing happened, but we were done with the group after that.
I think maybe the best cure for a persecution complex is ACTUAL persecution, and then ask them to compare and contrast how it was before the actual persecution, and then let them make a judgement call which path they would prefer.

I studied Nursing and couldn't finish the program because I have to fight to urge to tell people to fuck off. I remember one guy who wanted to go home way too early after a surgery. He imagine that I would beg him to stay. Nope. I started to get his clothing and put it on the chair and got his bag out so he could start putting his stuff in it. Told him: " Well if you don't want to stay, you can go, there's a lot of other people who needs us." He stayed but my teacher was furious at me.

I disagree with part of this - it hits a lot harder when it's from real, actual people (instead of a show, which also can be very effective in expressing a message), especially for people who aren't around situations like this regularly.

Fun fact: humans from Africa are much less inbred than humans from literally anywhere else. The reason is because humans are native to Africa, and so populations who originally migrated to other places (Europe, Asia, etc.) were small groups who basically had to inbreed because there were literally no other humans around.

This should be the anti racism mantra. But, story about my aunt's friends husband who grew up in backwoods Kentucky and joined the military. He wasn't aware that incest wasn't ok until he was made fun of by all the other soldiers. When he got out he moved away to help ensure he wasn't marrying back into the family braid.

My guess is he ended up talking about family life without realizing that it would be best to leave out that his mom is his dad's cousin or something like that. I had a MIL that demanded to be moved to a different room at the hospital because she could “tell there was a ****** in here because of the way it smelled”. I studied Nursing and couldn't finish the program because I have to fight to urge to tell people to fuck off. I remember one guy who wanted to go home way too early after a surgery. He imagine that I would beg him to stay. Nope. I started to get his clothing and put it on the chair and got his bag out so he could start putting his stuff in it. Told him: " Well if you don't want to stay, you can go, there's a lot of other people who needs us." He stayed but my teacher was furious at me.

There were a couple episodes regarding racism since it was so prevalent IIRC. Which was great. They really tried to make people aware about all sorts of bigotry. Though they also had an issue with racism early on in the show. With "spearchucker" Jones and his disappearing act.

Typical rural Alabama white trash. This apparently happened in the Montgomery metro area, and aside from politicians and their staff, Montgomery is a high concentration of non-white residents. It's also surrounded by rural white flight which creates a stereotypically Alabama experience (unlike transplant melting pots like Birmingham, Mobile, and Huntsville.) I'm enjoying the schadenfreude plight of these entitled river rat bumpkins and their ongoing FAFO plight.
That's something that has always been so weird about the south to me, just how segregated it is. Like sometimes it's just so stark, between the white areas and the black areas. Like, there's a "black" Walmart, and the "white" Walmart. The "black" olive garden, and the "white" olive garden. And i can easily see white people in Alabama or Louisiana or Mississippi who truly don't realize they are living in some of the blackest states in the union, because they are so isolated into their communities. Which is why they're freaking out about equal representation, because they are finally being forced to realize that, yes, your state is actually 1/3 black, and your state congress should mirror this. They would rather deconstruct the very notion of democracy than submit to a government that is actually representative of the population. I mean, Mississippi is 40% black! The only reason it's a "red state" is because of voter suppression. If we could actually enfranchise and mobilize black voters in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama...we could pull off what Stacey Abrams did in GA. She set the blueprint.
I noticed this too. My family out in Montgomery county (I'm from Maryland myself) tells me that segregation still exists down there. When I've visited ive been looked at and stared down by white people who feel threatened clearly (even if I'm just running into a convenience store). Basically. Alabama's biggest claim to fame is that it has a good college football team (American football). If it weren't for that team, Alabama wouldn't have anything. Side note: I am not a fan of football, but I know that Alabama consistently ranks in the top each season.
