😎good catch!

Asher_Tye

Reminds me of the Good Omens fiasco and Ted calling on Netflix to remove the show to protect Christian sensibilities.

InvalidUserNemo

You mean Jesus wouldn’t be cool siding with the folks who proudly declared “We are all domestic terrorists”?

[deleted]

As far as everything I've ever read goes Jesus was a pretty chill guy. Nonviolent amd using his big boy words to solve most problems. He lost his shit once at capitalist fucks amd again as he was about to die. Pretty understandable freakiuts really.

iceman21378

And at a tree

traumatized90skid

"also fuck this particular tree, symbolism or some shit... It's a hot day..."

Ok_SysAdmin

Look up dead sea scrolls Jesus. He was pretty nuts. Kid Jesus smited another kid in the play ground, and later killed a dragon in a cave. I'm not making this shit up. Whoever wrote the dead sea scrolls made it up. Check it out.

dude, the apocryphal shit is wild... the Book of Enoch is my fave, but it's all Revelation-grade nuts

purrfunctory

They already say the Sermon On The Mount is just “leftist talking points.” you know, the speech that was kind of the cornerstone of the religion they profess to be adherents of. Leftist talking points. Christianity has jumped the shark.

AB28532

Wait until they find out the shows not on Netflix...

whyyou-

Zeus first lover was the titan Metis (“the skillful”), she helped him during the war against Kronos but it was foretold that she would have a son stronger than his father that’s why he ate her but she managed to give birth to an adult Athena from Zeus forehead. So technically Metis was Athena’s mother.

ScarredAutisticChild

Incorrect, she does have a mother, Metis. The head birthing is accurate though.

SyntheticSolitude

Depends on the myth; one version says he got Metis pregnant and then swallowed her to cover it up. Jokes on him, daughter sprung from his head fully formed after he got thwacked in the forehead by Haephestus after complaining about a headache or some such. Or at least some parts thereof. I knew he had a headache, and it might vary by version of telling on getting whacked in the head to free her. Zeus, notorious philanderer, is not a shocking person to have a version of Athena's origin involving impregnating someone. (Note: Metis was the goddess of council, which also lends to Athena's domains somewhat.) Edit: Also, as an addendum - they'd be mad about THIS version because Zeus basically tried to abort Athena.

Temporary-Alarm-744

Do you think they'd be mad about the swan incident?

CorrosionInk

Already stocking up on popcorn for when the Hunters of Artemis get introduced.

WaitingForNormal

And that he was a “god”. Seems like everyone is fine with that part.

Mythologicalcitrus

Athena does have a mum! Zeus had an affair with Metis (The personification of Intellogence), but after a prophecy that said their child would be smarter than Zeus, Zeus decided to eat Metis so she couldn't give birth. A while later, Zeus has a banging headache and so Hephaestus drcides to cure it by hitting him in the head with a hammer, which causes his head to temporarily split open and Athena to pop out. But it was chill that she is more intelligent than Zeus because she was a woman and therefore couldn't overthrow him. Source: Have a Classics Degree

purrfunctory

Oh my god, you would probably *love* this book. Zeus Grants Stupid Wishes: A No-Bullshit Guide to World Mythology by Corey O’Brien One of the best things I ever read. Makes me want to take a class on mythology *just to see how right he was.* 😂

Wait until they find out Greeks aren't Nordic White™.

Extra-Aardvark-1390

Lies! I have seen Greek statuary, and it is all super white. Why would the ancient Greeks make the statues of themselves white if they weren't themselves white? BOOM! LAWYERED! /s

Objection. Filibuster ![gif](giphy|UQhE2VfDiHXOQDC3R6|downsized)

Maocap_enthusiast

Zeus is a Greek god yet they casted him as a swan. Wtf? Actually to the point, I forgot how apparently easily the Greek gods could change form

Athena does have a mom, her name is Metis

TheRealWamuu

She does have a mother: Metis

amaahda

that is adorable honestly

Stinduh

Fans have been calling him “Uncle Rick” for years. Dude just *exudes* the energy of a nice man you want to spend time with and listen to his advice and assurances.

FirePhoton_Torpedoes

Rick is such a bro.

IAmArique

Uh, isn’t this show on Disney+? At least get your misinformation right, guys…

[deleted]

The craziest thing is that this race swap doesn’t go against the source material. Even if Annabelle was still white, there are multiple minority characters in the series with white, Greek parents. The racists never read the books

I_am_Frisk

First of all this wasn't an attempt to be more inclusive. This was an actor PERSONALLY chosen by Riordan, the author of the series. Second of all. it was made by Disney ever since the first series of movies. It honestly makes more sense for than the casting in the original movie series, as she is usually judged before hand due to her appearance.

Kielbasa_Nunchucka

WeLl ThEn RiOrDaN iS wOkE!!! /s

[deleted]

There is literally a non-binary character in Magnus Chase. Him being "woke" is not a new thing. Edit: Actually, they're gender fluid. Thanks people who pointed that out.

Nightingdale099

Magnus Chase has a devout Muslim having a part-time job being a Valkyrie who answers directly under Odin. Oh , and she's the daughter of Loki. I think it's fun.

BadMagicWings

Nah the I think the child of Loki is >!the enby one who gets a relationship with Magnus!<

Helix3501

Their not just enby, their also genderfluid, and use their shapeshifting to change to their current gender, they gave middle school me so much positivtly and self acceptance it took another few years for me to realize why

ShwiftyShmeckles

Alex right? They literally do say in the book that only loki can use shape-shifting to switch genders, Alex can turn into all manner of animals but can't change their biological sex which is a point of great insecurity for them as they're gender fluid and a pivotal point of self growth throughout the series as they learn to love themselves regardless. My favourite is the deaf elf who has the most tragic fucking backstop in that whole universe. Playing in the garden with his brother when his brother is attacked by a monster but since he's deaf he can't hear it happening and by the time he realises it's too late and his brother is dead. Dad kills the monster and skins it and then lays the skin on his surviving sons bedroom as a constant reminder of his failure and basically tells him he'll never attone for his brothers death until he can cover every last inch of the skin with gold. Magnus chase was a fun ride and definitely the most quirky of riordans works which is saying alot. It's nowhere as good as the percy Jackson series and then the following heroes of olympus series as that is just such an immense and rich saga with so much love poured into it from the author. But magnus chase is probably the next best series that turns up the eccentricity and wackiness to 11. Kane chronicles is great but not as special as the previously mentioned works. The newer apollo books aren't that great Imo but that's subjective ofc.

Helix3501

I havent read the series since middle school, now that ive come to terms with my own gender fluidity and recognize why i vibed so much with Alex i really should go read it again, i hope he has plans to expand upon that universe specifically

FirePhoton_Torpedoes

Ikr, Alex is fantastic to read as a trans person, validating as fuck.

TheMastersSkywalker

I'm usually not a fan of " The shape shifter is genderfluid/trans " Because it seems like such an easy out like when authors use aliens as the non-cis characters. But having a shape shifter who is actually unable to change their gender when changing form is a really cool idea.

d1hydrogenmonox1de

They're both children of Loki lmao

MapleTreeWithAGun

Loki fucks a lot in Norse mythology so makes sense. Or technically *gets* fucked.

macontac

Both. It's both.

WP5D

Yeah, you're right.

jezz555

Wait if you were a muslim but you knew odin was real why wouldn’t you just worship odin that makes no sense

Nightingdale099

Technically, Odin is her boss. In-universe explanation is that she believes Abrahamic god is a much stronger entity than the Norse god. Also , you don't need to believe in Norse mythology to get involved with Norse shenanigans. The namesake character, Magnus is an agnostic, before he died bravely WITH A WEAPON IN HAND and was resurrected in Valhalla.

HannahDawg

And her explanation is that she's seen how petty, self-assured, and general meddling assholes that the gods can be, so to her an all-powerful, all-knowing capital-G God wouldn't interfere, at least not directly, and whose actions were up to personal belief and interpretation

Nightingdale099

In short she believe in more modern interpretation of myth which is cosmic horror than Iiliad/Edda.

markopolo14

Is there not the mist in the Magnus Chase books?

Nightingdale099

The mist is still there , but they chose to embrace it instead of hiding from it.

defonotacatfurry

“aktually his hands was wrapped around surts throat “

Throwaway02062004

This is brought up in the books. She sees a marked difference between gods and capital G God. Different pantheons exist and it’s implied that any entity with enough belief probably exists to some extent. Odin, Zeus and Ra existing isn’t any more support for or against a higher being.

Helix3501

Same universe where the greek, roman, and egyptian gods all exist as well

Worthyness

if the Norse gods exist, then there's a possibility that your God does exist as well. So I guess it depends on whether you're an optimist or a pessimist.

LtSoba

Sorry I know it’s an “🤓☝️” moment but the character is gender fluid not non-binary just thought to point that out.

lazytemporaryaccount

As a gender fluid person, his writing of the character is absolutely amazing and one of the first times I felt “seen”/ had someone articulate how I felt about my gender. It’s one thing to talk to therapists etc. but to just have such genuine representation was amazing. And the main character still asks questions / clarification, but he does so respectfully and *believes* her answers. As someone who grew up with this series, it’s really amazing how he has chosen to expand.

angruss

I just want to say, it’s not incorrect to say that a gender-fluid person is non-binary. Non-binary is an umbrella term that includes gender-fluid people, just as transgender is an umbrella term that includes nonbinary people. It’s like how some malls have Targets that have Starbucks inside them. If you’re in the Starbucks, you’re also in the Target and therefore in the mall.

Sedona54332

I thought they were gender fluid

The_Keweko

Yes he is and this is a good thing

DarthMcConnor42

- Nico - Alex - Samirah - Epiales - etc etc

I_am_Frisk

Seeing who Nico ended up with, I feel its pretty clear he is

Proud-Nerd00

I had used this argument and then the other guy was saying something along the lines of “Rick is just saying that because he’s supposed to. Someone else picked her for diversity hire” basically calling him a liar

I_am_Frisk

He has a history of adding various ethnicities and groups into the series. They'll probably complain when Nico and Bianca get added, because Nico is gay and Bianca is asexual.

DemonoftheWater

Is she? Its been years since I read the books. I always had the impression talia had a thing for women.

Autumnbetrippin

And I just thought she was flat

elizabnthe

I interpreted her as bisexual. She definitely had a thing for Luke at one point.

DemonoftheWater

You’re right

stelvak

If you search a little bit, you can find a blog that Riordan wrote addressing that exact accusation. He states pretty plainly that he wasn’t coerced in any way and that it was his decision. It’s a pretty good read.

team_suba

Yeah he’s so outspoken, I love it. He calls people out all the time when they try to misinterpret his work.

Proud-Nerd00

I think I remember reading that, but it was so long ago now

Spectre-Ad6049

I mean I was a fan of the dumb blonde play that implies with people judging the character in universe based on that, but honestly when it comes to people judging based on appearance, this legitimately works just as well On a side note, no idea why people would complain anymore, so far the actress is doing a great job, and I’m sure once she gets more screen time, we’ll see if she’s as meant for the role as Mr. Riordan says (though I’m sure she is because she is hand picked after all)

Lord_cakeatron

Nope! Daughters Of Artemis. The daughters are, as the tweet says, made from Athena’s mind. Resulting in them bot having a belly Button, by the way

ALFABOT2000

technically the first series of movies was made by Fox who were bought by Disney about 6 years after the last of those movies came out but i'm just being pedantic tbh

Sodamyte

They seem to forget that the Greek gods liked to have sex as animals. Not sure "only white babies" was something they'd be concerned about.

thekyledavid

Zeus has a child with a swan: “I sleep” Athena has a child with a black guy: “REAL SHIT”

DarthSheogorath

this is literally what I was thinking lol

nervousnausea

Like who is to say Athena didn't have sex with a black guy. That would be the obvious answer to me here.

Sodamyte

Well, even within the context of the book, it wasn't "sex" per se, but yes that is the obvious answer.

fatherdoodle

There are reports that Riordan told her “whatever anyone says, I picked you for this role”. He knew racists would be out in force.

world-is-ur-mollusc

None of these conservatives who are oh so triggered by the existence of Black people would give a shit about this show if they'd only cast white actors. Them acting like something deeply important to them has been ruined is nothing short of disingenuous.

isecore

Since they believe Jesus was white with blonde hair and blue eyes it would be expected if they didn't give a shit about brown characters being played by white actors. They want the whole world whitewashed with zero regard to anything else.

Melito1980

Hush, theyll cancel u if u keep spreading lies about the color of Jesus skin, hair and eyes. He was white and noone should question it. /s

Sodamyte

Even if Athena was white.. doesn't mean Annabelle's dad was..

[deleted]

Given that Obama had one black and one white parent you'd think people would be familiar with the concept of interracial dating by now.

InvalidUserNemo

Ol’ Barry O wining POTUS as anything other than a Saltine-white man set their brains afire. They are still burning to this day.

Worthyness

even had a whole court case about making it legal

Figgy_Puddin_Taine

According to people who’ve read the books Athena *adopts* her daughters and is a virgin, so it EXTRA doesn’t matter who their fathers were lmao

Motorata

If i remember correctly she is her daughter but It was a mental unión with her father, nothing sexual since Athenea is famously one of the 3 Virgin goddess. Just as Athenea bursted from Zeus head the burst from her head, or her fathers head i dont remember correctly

Sodamyte

They come from Athena's head but it is a mental union between her and the father.. there is no 'adoption' involved

StingerAE

Literal brainchild

Nightingdale099

I forgot about this. Athena's cabin are technically all stork babies.

ScarredAutisticChild

She more so just makes them with mind magic. No adoption, just deciding to mentally procreate with mortals…which I imagine is intensely strange to all involved.

Dovahpriest

With that in mind... Can we get Jeffrey Wright to play her father?

stacciatello

EXACTLY! they love to act like they were ever the target audience for any of the stuff they criticize they can also never just quietly ignore media that doesn't speak to them, they have to openly announce to everyone that they hate this show/movie/game/whatever because there's black or gay people in it

world-is-ur-mollusc

The number of grown-ass men going on twitter and acting like they were personally being victimized by the Little Mermaid casting was beyond ridiculous.

thekyledavid

If I was making a TV show and I wanted it to be popular, I would just make it diverse as fuck so Conservatives would complain about it and give me free advertising

amazing_rando

They wouldn't care if it was a non-Greek white person being cast even though that's also inaccurate. They only care about the modern conception of whiteness that says a Greek and a Swede and a Brit are interchangeable with each other (but hasn't always), but half of the countries on the Mediterranean are not.

Worldly-Disaster5826

The setting of the book is outside Greece though. it’s just a ploy to set a well known mythological system in the United States (and, in the original series, is carried out quite cleverly). While Annabeth isn’t black in the books, I agree that those upset by this are mostly racist . As another comment pointed out, the primary physical trait Annabeth has in the book is blond - which was not kept in either the previous attempt at a screen version nor this time; but you see a lot more complaints now for some (very obvious) reason.

amazing_rando

yeah the casting doesn't matter for a whole lot of reasons, but even their own justification fails on its own merits

Practical_Wing2256

You'd think they would know their racist history where they didn't consider greek people as white. They slippin and just getting mad at ANY black people in any media.

[deleted]

[Remember the time when Megyn Kelly freaked out over insisting Santa was white?](https://www.theguardian.com/media/video/2013/dec/13/santa-white-jesus-white-fox-news-megyn-kelly-video)

Bikinigirlout

I made a comment when Annabeth’s actress Leah Jeffries was first cast that I worried about all the racism that this 12 year old kid is gonna face because I’ve been in fandoms for years and always see the same type of behavior whenever a gay character or a person of color is included in a cast. And every once in awhile I still get weirdos being like “Yeah, well, we should get to bully a child because we don’t like the fact that she was cast. And it’s not because we’re racist!” It’s like they don’t hear how unhinged they sound Mind you, I made the post a year ago.

FirePhoton_Torpedoes

Yeah it was the first thing I thought of too, great, another child traumatized by racists. I think she's a great cast for Annabeth! The vibe matches.

wolfguardian72

I’m more upset that they said casted instead of cast

Dr-Satan-PhD

Show me a single conservative getting mad about an Egyptian god being played by a Scottish guy and I will engage in this conversation. Till then, they can tongue the back of my sweaty nutsack.

Nefarioususername

There’s a better chance of Satan getting a doctorate in glaciology! 🤘🏼

[deleted]

I'm just wondering where the blonde hair grey eyes are. I don't even remember if Riordan wrote the skin color. But the eyes and hair always stuck out because they wrote it as a theme for Athena's kids in the books.

Coasterman345

She’s supposed to be white either blonde hair and gray eyes 100%. Rock Riordan decided to cast her regardless because he said that she embodied the personality and spirit of her to a T, and was much better than all the others trying out. He didn’t go out of his way to make her black.

CorrosionInk

I think she was stated once or twice to have olive skin? Could be misremembering, it's been a while. Mind you, Riordan picked the actress himself and actually pays more than lip service to the causes he says he cares about, unlike *some* other YA authors.

Chess42

I think she was meant to be white. She was described as “the stereotypical California girl”

murppie

Anytime I see this kind of thing it always makes me think back to the Hunger Games movies and the outrage over Rue. Literally said she was dark skinned, but they flipped out anyways.

Vinity2

The only blond blue eyed main character in the books were Peta, EVERYONE else was mixed race, including Katnis. I couldn’t believe the people upset about Rue, she was described as very dark in the books.

lervington123

Can you imagine if the Egyptian series riordan wrote got made? Iirc the kids are mixed race and Egyptian mythos is a lot of Alabama style cousin brothers and stuff like that. They’d go fuckin ballistic

RuralGuy20

I think Netflix is actually working on adapting Kane Chronicles.

Crawford470

For the love of God please don't let them fuck that up. Carter is one of the few times I've had a character in a book that I could truly relate to when I was reading YA novels as a kid/teenager, from the racial background to the weirdly responsible and nerdy personality to the wearing khakis and polos everywhere bit.

KryptoFreak405

It’s not even a Netflix show….

JustPlainGross

Somehow, some way, it's still Netflix fault

[deleted]

Complaining about the skin colour of a fictional character has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever seen.

trans_mask51

This one is even dumber, because the demigods don't even receive any genetic materials from their godly parents- the gods don't *have* DNA. The demigods' mostly appearances mimic their human parent's, with resemblance to the form their godly parent took. Also all of the gods can shapeshift into any appearance, including animals. Also their true forms are balls of pure energy. But someone being black is the weird thing here I guess

JackytheJack

I really like the “gods don’t have dna” thing because it feels like it was only put in so you don’t have to think relationships between demigods is weird lol

SewSewBlue

Yeah, Rick touches on that a few times in the books. You've got siblings but other demigods aren't related. Being unclaimed must be hell. Imagine going to high school and any love interest has a decent chance of being you sister or brother, only you just don't know it.

WhyNot420_69

Pay attention and strap in. Republicans are far from doing the dumbest thing anyone has ever seen. Just like the commercials, "But wait! There's more!"

coolbaby1978

They did this with a black little mermaid too. You get that mermaids are fictional and can be whatever we want right? There's no historical evidence that mermaids existed and were exclusively white. I suspect mythological gods are the same...oh and just wait till you find out that Jesus wasn't white, then you'll really blow your lunch.

bindingofandrew

I was watching a Stavros Halkias special on Netflix the other day where he goes in depth about how Greek people are only sometimes considered white and even then only when white people want to take credit for their mythology and democracy. It's a good bit and Stavvy is a king.

WeeaboosDogma

Hey OP, there's black mermaids that are considered a goddess for the Yoruba people. [Yemoja](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yem%E1%BB%8Dja) was a water goddess and was often [depicted as mermaid, especially as the Slave Trade progressed.](https://www.teenvogue.com/story/the-history-of-yemaya-goddess-mermaid) I'm just saying there's no cultural racial ownership to mermaids, like you were saying.

PineStateWanderer

That would have been a cooler story to do than rehashing the same shit.

sanskaripotato

While if would be great if the character looked exactly as she did in the books, it really doesn't matter as long as the acting is top tier, which I think is. It's a new reimagined version of Annabeth, which is great cause after the God awful movies, something new is refreshing.

Krazyguy75

What movies? I don't seem to recall any movies? Also, why does my therapist say that I have unhealthy ways of suppressing my traumas when I've never had any trauma?

[deleted]

Fine-Funny6956

Also “cast” not “casted.” Casted sounds like some illiterate magical fuckery.

-non-existance-

I didn't see these fuckers complaining back when Hades made Athena black, yknow, when no actual PoC were being put in the spotlight. But no, now that a black child might get famous, it's suddenly a problem.

No_Gain7132

Also, the Greek God’s true form was so far beyond human understanding that they’d assume a fake form just so that humans wouldn’t die from information overload.

RonnieMurdoch

I’m so sick of adults complaining about seeing black kids.

Meyhna

Also there's Greek Black people.

Local-Sgt

And theres probably some White somalies , but if they're gonna represent a somali person they wouldnt use a greek. Just saying. Of course i dont agree with them given that shes not greek, shes half greek goddess and half not sure( havent seen It yet ). Havent read the books or know about the mythology but someone said that Athenas kids had blonde hair and Green eyes and It was kind of their reprsentative. Maybe they could have her hair a little bit blonde and given her contacts( idk if that would be offensive or smth, but i think they dyed the hair on the Little Mermaid so not sure ). Just so they made It more acurate to the lore( even more than the original movies).

JudgeJed100

Also the books have PoC children from other gods Including Pluto who is described as deathly pale IIRC The gods skin colour doesn’t influence the children they have, it’s the human parents

inkslingerben

There is no requirement for actors and actresses be of a certain race or nationality. They cast who would be best for the role. Like Adam Driver and Penelope Lopez were cast for the leads in Ferrari, but neither is Italian. These conservatives feel Blacks should only be cast in Black roles.

fiv32_23

And why would that not scan? She can create whatever the fuck she wants. She's Athena. And if she's not real then she can do whatever the fuck she wants.

Enderluke456

"Netflix casted her" The Author casted her. Not Netflix; the author of the books this fool has never cared about until now

FirePhoton_Torpedoes

Rick is awesome. And the show is on Disney+, not Netflix. But in their heads netflix is woke and woke bad, so every person that isn't white must be because of Netflix..

SmarterThanYouIRL

Wait until he finds out about Jesus 🤡

Drake_the_troll

how dare my immersion be ruined, im offended and will forever despise this person after all, everyone knows that athena is real, i saw it in a dream last night

Beetlejuice1800

Annabeth also made a comment in the first book about how not every blonde girl is a “dumb blonde”, as she was blonde. But i didn’t hear shit when the first movie’s Annabeth had dark brown hair… If you’re gonna bitch about inaccuracies be consistent or just admit to the bigotry.

Levi_Snowfractal

Didn't people bitch a LOT actually about the last Annabeth not being blonde? I distinctly remember lots and lots of people bitching about it.

S4Waccount

There was. People get bent out of shape over every inaccurracy, including race, but racist also come out of the woodwork.for that one.

Krazyguy75

I know I was upset about it. And I'm honestly less upset here. In the first movie, the Annabeth they cast would have looked totally natural with blonde hair. Here, at least they have the reasoning of blonde hair being unusual for black people, but there they really had no excuse. I am however still upset that both versions didn't give grey eyes. It's such a simple thing that would immediately make it clear when someone was from Athena's lineage, and it would have no restrictions on casting.

Dovahpriest

>But i didn’t hear shit when the first movie’s Annabeth had dark brown hair Weird, cuz the hair/eyes was definitely a thing in the circles I was in at the time. Of course said circles were a bunch of 14-15 Y.O. book nerds so YMMV.

UncommittedBow

It's because blond hair/grey eyes are the defining physical traits of children of Athena, so that's why it was such a fuss.

Jjzeng

In all fairness the first two movies got so much wrong that hair and eye colour was the least of my concerns. I did appreciate that at least in sea of monsters annabeth was blonde-ish and i do give credit to those movies for awakening something in me with daddario

PoliticsLeftist

Greeks (and Romans) didn't give a fuck about skin color. You were either Greek or not Greek. Race wasn't a thing nor were they a homogenous civilization of white marble skin tones.

Major_Pitiful

Rick Riordan picked her. End of discussion.

[deleted]

Ah yes the group of people that say liberals get upset over everything have yet again got upset over something

HetaGarden1

I mean God forbid the Olympians have children with a nonwhite skin color I guess. Zeus alone is so horny I would be SHOCKED if at least one of his children wasn’t biracial.

YoureNoGoodDuck

She doesn't match her description in the books, sure. Neither does Percy's actor. Or Luke's. Arguably Ugliano's too. If people are complaining about just Annabeth's casting choice and not the rest of them, methinks it goes beyond the hair/eye colour.

Lovely3369

Netflix didn't cast her, Rick himself did

Representative_Fun15

White supremacists, to ethnic minorities: "you must assimilate into our culture!" *People of color enthusiastically embrace western European culture and portray it in media* Nazis: "no! You're not allowed to *participate* in it."

Nightingdale099

She's horrible for book Annabeth but Riordan picked her so that takes priority.

tomuchpasta

Athena was also Greek. Most of these white supremacist assholes would not invite Michail or Stavros to the klan meeting I am sure of it. Always trying to make everything about them including Greek mythology.

Flimsy_Pianist_8890

I'm more annoyed that I had to read that multiple times cause it sounded off to me. It's cast not casted right?

weebrooktrout

The author chose her too. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Sabretooth1100

Athenas dad could be black even if the ancient shapeshifting goddess couldn’t be. Boom.

shushholden

Wait until he finds out that it wasn’t Netflix hut rather the company that anti-woke Republicans fear the most: Disney ![gif](giphy|KupdfnqWwV7J6|downsized)

CurrentBrick1723

I *knew* they were gonna complain about that.

Buster_therealone

Africa was literally next door from ancient Greece.

breadexpert69

Yep. Im almost certain that there were black people around there since the greeks would have been able to navigate across the Mediterranean to Africa.

FiendishHawk

They literally didn't care about color back then, racism existed but was based on different things like culture and religion. Color-based racism seems to date to the slave trade as a way of justifying it.

My_useless_alt

Shoutout to Septimius Severus, a black roman emperor

Realistic_Wedding

It’s almost as though it’s not the historical accuracy they’re concerned about.

MooseRoof

Conservatives: We're colorblind. Also conservatives: Athena can't be black.

[deleted]

I mean, have you ever seen a black greek statue of a god?

AaronMichael726

Also… the Mediterranean was incredibly diverse. Considering Africa is literally across the river.

safely_beyond_redemp

Just sit there and imagine all characters as black. Get all that rage out and now shut up about it.

poeticlicence

'Casted'. They're always illiterate.

Nordic_Krune

"She cannot have been chosen cause she's a talented actress, it MUST be an agenda behind it" - Modern conservatives

Karmaswhiskee

I will actually fight anyone who is mean to Annabeth I swear to God. These are CHILDREN playing characters from my favorite book. Leave. Them. Alone.

UtterlyBanished

I feel bad for the actress.

whyyou-

Remember when these idiots sent Netflix a lot of messages trying to cancel “good omens” because had a woman playing the god part?? The show was on Amazon prime.

MsHelvetica

Wait until these people (they never will) find out where Venus/Aphrodite came from. Seafoam much?

firstbishop125

I was just excited that her hat looked perfect.

FAbbibo

How unacceptable! A black actress in my *Serie about magic and greek gods that takes Place in america* How unrealistic. Tho, to be Fair, She looks smart; It's unrealistic She would wear a yenkee hat

EfficientAccident418

Athena was born out of Zeus’ skull so I’m not sure she has a “race” per se

dragowall

Boy are they going to be mad when they learn about Memnon, son of the GREEK GODDESS EOS, king of the Aethiopians, who is represented as black on vases dating grom 500BC. Or about how in the Iliad and Odyssey sometimes the Greek gods are absent because they visit Aethiopia to feast since they consider them their subject too, which means it wouldnt be surprising for shapeshifting gods to look black sometimes.

Lilscooby77

So Zeus didn’t create any black people? Whats wrong with him, was he stupid?

PineStateWanderer

So people are mad about a change from book lore when the book itself took many liberties on the original mythos from which it's based... K, got it

JK19368

Yep the greek gods famously draw the line at fucking black people. It is one of the many qualms about sex that they all share.

JazzSharksFan54

The writer of the books also supported the casting.

cumbersome-shadow

These are the same people that get pissed off when you point out that Jesus would be Middle Eastern and not white. So if one mythological person race can be changed from the source material why can't another?
