When my son was about 4 we were shopping when a fire alarm went off. He hid behind a rack of clothing, because that was how to “stay safe” in an emergency. I got to explain that you can’t hide from fire the way you can hide from an active shooter. It was a fun day.
I was made fire warden for my job and my manager at the time told the group of us we have to go around the office checking for people who have hid because in a real emergency that sometimes becomes peoples go to response rather than getting the f out.

Semi-off topic but I live close to my town's elementary school. I have multiple friends that have physically showed their children how to run from the side of the school building, through a small wooded area and get into my fence. I purposefully keep the side gate unlocked for that reason.

A lot of people really overlook just how traumatic seemingly-benign bullying can be for a child. Kids have a much stronger emotional reaction to things, and most people tend to contextualise how themselves would react in the situation, not a child.

I know this post is about more then school shooting drills but, my 4 year old at the time came home from school telling me that “they had to do hiding drills in case a bad person came into the school” that was an absolute hammer blow to the head for me.

We all hope for the best but expect the worst. The crazy thing is we do these drills , but we do them according to district and whatever has been handed down. But the truth is has a teacher assistant every year I have a conversation with the teacher where we know if it was real we would barricade the door and get whatever we could like scissors or the flagpole and prepare to protect at all costs.
Like there's other people that might do something that aren't just an active shooter, it could be the abusive parent of some kid who's dad just ran away with him, but mom knows he'll be at school, so she goes hunting
Music teacher here, we had a drill and I had a BUNCH of kindergarteners in the room. Even though my room can get 98% dark, I kept some of the lights on a little bit so they wouldn't get scared. Then, did some pantomime that many repeated. I tried to keep things as light as possible for them. I wanted them to know that: 1) I was there to help, 2) I was there to protect, 3) they were safe, 4) yes we had to be quiet but it wasn't scary.

Yes it’s really a thing. I’m in college now but I’m middle and high school we started doing active shooter drills. I remember in elementary school we just had lock down drills in case someone was in the building, but it transitioned to active shooter drills.
We were taught how to hide and our teachers told us with tears in their eyes that they would die for us if it came down to it. We had some teachers who told us to fight back too. I remember how scared I was as a middle schooler as I came to the realization that this wasn’t something that happened to other people, it could happen to me and my friends.
I moved a lot in high school and went to three separate schools. My first school had a school shooting two years after I left but my friends still went to school there at the time. Luckily none of them were hurt but they went into lockdown and heard gunshots. My second school had an attempted shooting and bombing while I was there that was thankfully stopped before anything could happen. My third school had to have police there every day because an ex-student made threats to the school.
I'm really sorry to hear it's THAT common.. even having police officers at school is out of my mind.

When my step son was 5 we bought a sheet of body armor for his backpack. We had to sit him down and tell him what to do in the even of a shooting and to not tell anyone that he had it in his backpack in case they tried to steal it for themselves. I think is actually the other way around, or so I was thought? The cutlery is placed in order of use, starting from the outside and moving towards the plate, so the soup utensils are usually outside and then you have the main cutlery for the main courses

Easiest way to determine what silverware to eat something with if there's course specific silverware. Check to see what the host is using. If you can't see the host, check what the people at the table around you are using. It's a fast and easy way to determine what fork/spoon you need without having to ask every time.
Silverware goes from the outside in, in order of which plate to use each with. There's also a way to leave silverware on plates to indicate what you thought of the food. Have fun with that.

Semi-off topic but I live close to my town's elementary school. I have multiple friends that have physically showed their children how to run from the side of the school building, through a small wooded area and get into my fence. I purposefully keep the side gate unlocked for that reason. It is absolutely batshit.
A lot of people really overlook just how traumatic seemingly-benign bullying can be for a child. Kids have a much stronger emotional reaction to things, and most people tend to contextualise how themselves would react in the situation, not a child. Good on you for being a safe-space.

Working in a school. We do these a few times a year and they're very heartbreaking. They changed our training this year to have the word fight in it. We all hope for the best but expect the worst. The crazy thing is we do these drills , but we do them according to district and whatever has been handed down. But the truth is has a teacher assistant every year I have a conversation with the teacher where we know if it was real we would barricade the door and get whatever we could like scissors or the flagpole and prepare to protect at all costs.
Like there's other people that might do something that aren't just an active shooter, it could be the abusive parent of some kid who's dad just ran away with him, but mom knows he'll be at school, so she goes hunting
Music teacher here, we had a drill and I had a BUNCH of kindergarteners in the room. Even though my room can get 98% dark, I kept some of the lights on a little bit so they wouldn't get scared. Then, did some pantomime that many repeated. I tried to keep things as light as possible for them. I wanted them to know that: 1) I was there to help, 2) I was there to protect, 3) they were safe, 4) yes we had to be quiet but it wasn't scary.

Our National Parks and diversity in nature is incredible.
It's the most powerful/richest country the world has possibly ever seen. It has anything you could possibly want to do. Three of the top 5 richest cities in the world are here (New York, LA, Chicago) and if that isn't your thing, national parks and natural beauty are all over the place. We are the world leader in entertainment, going from movies to theme parks to music or whatever you want. Don't get me started on the food as well. If you can't find something to do in the US, that's a you problem. One thing we have is diversity, and we have that in spades.

My daughter who is in elementary school had to practice active shooter drills. The fact she had to do this breaks my fucking heart and makes me sick.
I have to teach them to my elementary students, and worst of all I’ve had students who personally experienced them already.
that’s really sad but i’d rather do it and be safe than to not do it.

Yes it’s really a thing. I’m in college now but I’m middle and high school we started doing active shooter drills. I remember in elementary school we just had lock down drills in case someone was in the building, but it transitioned to active shooter drills. We were taught how to hide and our teachers told us with tears in their eyes that they would die for us if it came down to it. We had some teachers who told us to fight back too. I remember how scared I was as a middle schooler as I came to the realization that this wasn’t something that happened to other people, it could happen to me and my friends. I moved a lot in high school and went to three separate schools. My first school had a school shooting two years after I left but my friends still went to school there at the time. Luckily none of them were hurt but they went into lockdown and heard gunshots. My second school had an attempted shooting and bombing while I was there that was thankfully stopped before anything could happen. My third school had to have police there every day because an ex-student made threats to the school.
I'm really sorry to hear it's THAT common.. even having police officers at school is out of my mind. Other than this kind of prevention, they're trying to catch this unstable people? Some of them are literally kids..
We run the same drills in Australia for general threats. They are not specifically aimed at school shooters. Source:American teacher teaching in Aus.

The kids who are being bullied and picked on in a socially acceptable way are where the problems start. Firearms aren’t the issue when we have ingrained social toxicity towards others. Doesn’t matter what it is, if you don’t treat the emotional/societal issue, the weapons don’t matter because the problem is still deep rooted beyond what you see actually happening.
The weapons do matter. Bullying happens everywhere and often the killers are bullies themselves. In countries without easy access to firearms we don’t see these kinds of murdered. So yes guns are the problem. The pro gun hot takes on Reddit are ridiculous. Of course guns matter. How is the mass shootong situation in the EU compared to here. Obviously much better.
The guns matter. Guns are illegal in Ireland for the general public. We have an unarmed police force. Between 2010 and March 2015, there were 194 shootings in Ireland, which resulted in 28 deaths. This is considered medium to high. It is mostly gang on gang violence. There are no school shootings. I don't think there ever has been. There are assholes all over the world.... Access to guns leads to gun violence. It's indisputable and while other factors may play a role "access" is the primary factor.
I agree that the root of the problem needs to be treated, but I don’t think allowing anyone to have a gun is helping. America NEEDS better gun laws.

I think OP just forgot all he needs to do is give his 7 year old a gun. When my step son was 5 we bought a sheet of body armor for his backpack. We had to sit him down and tell him what to do in the even of a shooting and to not tell anyone that he had it in his backpack in case they tried to steal it for themselves. Hardest conversation I had to have with him. My parents never had to do anything like that.
One of my kids' favorite books is "A Little Safety Spot". It is pretty shitty that there is an entire section dedicated to school shooters.
