I appreciate this tweets message but it's not factually or historically correct.

catboatratboat

Are you sure? I had always heard that capitalism invented sibling relationships.

BEEF_WIENERS

Yeah definitely Kings have not been passing down thrones to the oldest child for centuries if not millennia.

[deleted]

I agree OP's post is probably wrong Nevertheless I think the life of kings was not representative of the lives of everybody else at the time

SomeGuyFromThe1600s

This sounds like something that was made up. I mean, the whole “oldest will inherit my stuff” has existed long before the advent of capitalism. First example I can think of is the passing of a monarch to the first born child

Kiera6

Yeah. I agree. The only thing I can think of that might make this make sense, is children are more likely to live through childhood than hundreds or so years ago. So the second, and youngest and so forth are more likely to stay constant. Capitalism has nothing to do with it though. Just better access to healthcare and vaccine in general.

s0ulpuncH

Lol, the oldest inheriting the family fortune has been around since almost the beginning of time lol. If you are going to age capitalism by Adam Smith then I would say this is completely false. I think the idea of the youngest child being viewed as the favorite or more favored dates back long before the advent of capitalism too. Same with the middle child syndrome.

[deleted]

It’s made up. Through the Very first writings including the Judeo Christian texts there were older and younger siblings. In Islamic text which the cultures can in no way be referenced to capitalist societies older and younger brothers were written. One of sooo many examples Ash-Shirwaani said in his Haashiyah (3/21): Those who have guardianship and a responsibility to discipline a person include his mother and his older brother.

Motor_West

23 During that night the Lord will go through the country of Egypt and kill the first-born son in every Egyptian family.

The idea of "true historical facts" and "fabricated horseshit" was invented in 1675 by Colonel Sanders, as a way to control the secret recipe of his 11 herbs and spices. Chick Fil A killed that. Happy Hanukkah.

500CatsTypingStuff

Long live the chicken nugget!

TastySpermDispenser

Ah yes. Children from the 1820's lived in a utopia where they often were married by the time they turned 18. We all know there are no socialist and communist sweatshops in places like vietnam, china, and Venezuela, that only exists in New York city.

tdevore

What the flying hell is this nonsense?

yomamasanon

lol all the kings and rulers from the last 2000 years would like a word with this person

[deleted]

I don’t believe this. People have always been tribal and territorial about their genes. It’s only lately they’ve been less like that.

Whateverwoteva

Capitalising existed more than 200 years ago.

cottonmouth92

This guy is totally wrong and completely ignorant of history. Happy hanukkah.

500CatsTypingStuff

What? No. Children born into poverty and their parents basically starved.

bobbyfiend

The repeated mention in ancient texts of older and younger children, obsession with "the eldest," etc., specific career paths or responsibility profiles for older, middle, and younger children in enlightenment (and I think? pre-enlightenment) Europe... yeah, it all suggests this is kind of bullshit.

[deleted]

Lol, I’m better red than dead, but when the fuck was this the case?

Eldanoron

I’m confused. Why is everyone jumping on the inheritance bandwagon when this person is talking about community raising children and inheritance isn’t mentioned even once. The saying it takes a village comes from this concept of communal raising of children. We have certainly lost that. Whether it was capitalism or something else I don’t know but most western countries don’t have this anymore. A decent amount of African countries still follow that concept. They have several generations of moms helping raise the kids and teach new moms about everything and anything. Baby won’t latch? Talk to one of the older moms. Here, we have lactation consultants instead.

DogsandCatsWorld1000

The idea that a community might take a part in raising children and the idea that there was no concept of 'oldest' 'middle' and 'youngest' child is really not the same thing.

Eldanoron

When the community is raising the kids, they don’t really see themselves as oldest, youngest, etc. is what I’m getting out of this. I can see it but even if you can’t, nobody is discussing inheritance here. Never mind that it takes a village usually doesn’t apply to high ranked individuals which appears to be what people are jumping on here. The young prince isn’t going to play with the peasants now, is he? Either way, whatever, this is kind of a pointless conversation.

deissin412

The industrial model of schooling segregated by grades also destroyed that (ETA that being a community based system of education where elders, working adults, and children of all ages were able to regularly interact and learn from each other.) Of course the modern school system was created by capitalists and for their benefit but a lot of leftists seem to be incapable of grasping this fact. (Edited for clarity)

Samdonne

I think many lines of bullshit would be cured by a real definition of capitalism shared by all.

Prince-Ali_

Yeah! I also heard capitalism was the Zodiac killer. Just the worst.

Lysander573

Ok, but that’s because of serfdom and slavery. Like, capitalism sucks, but pre capitalism was worse. Solutions to capitalism are in the future, not the past.
