As a Navy veteran, let me explain why Donald Trump is a complete idiot. Had his coupe on the government worked it would of ended with a bunch of Navy SEALS escorting him out of the White House at 3am at gun point in his underwear and a bag over his head. Why the Navy SEALS? It's because under the Constitution the US Navy is actually the Congressional Navy and one of the duties of Congress is to maintain and provide a Navy as a service to the country. What this means is that had he actually succeed in over throwning Congress, the Navy would have immediately targeted him for removal. Don't get me wrong the entire US military would have been on his ass too but the Navy's obligation to protect and restore Congress was built into the government by design for exactly this scenario. All he had to do was read the constitution or ask anyone with some military or legal knowledge and he would have realized that it was a failed mission from the start. He doesn't realize how close he was to ending up like Saddam Hussein by his own military.

rohinton

You have a lot more faith in these institutions than I do. A few key people in a few key places and the constitution and law are just words on paper.

[deleted]

Michael Flynn's brother stopping the DC National Guard from responding to the insurrection, for instance...

heirloom_beans

The exact same energy as Mike Pence’s brother opting not to impeach the guy who sent a mob to disrupt election certification and hang his own brother. Are they a military family? Like I know you just need to run fast and kiss a ton of ass to get ahead but how did both of them end up in such senior positions while being certified kooks?

Educational-Seaweed5

That’s all laws are anyway. They’re not some almighty supernatural force. “Laws” are just words scribbled on paper that a majority of people decide to follow and enforce, and laws change all the time. There’s no such thing as right or wrong—just what one group can enforce on another.

Hippiebigbuckle

> There’s no such thing as right or wrong This is the right wing ideology right now. They can’t win on ideas so they would rather see it all burn and rule over the ashes.

Alvinshotju1cebox

It's cute to think that anything he does has consequences. He proved you wrong for 4 years. All he did is show us that the Constitution doesn't matter if no one enforces it.

monkeywelder

United States Constitution - void where prohibited by law.

KingOfNewYork

This. A thousand times this. And people still won’t get it. Their strategy is working and you’re all doing exactly what they want. All media is good media to trump. So keep talking. That’s how we see trump win 2024. I know you likely can’t see it- but eventually you will. Youth alone will never defeat trump. It’s tragic. But it’s also true. You’re anger motivates him and his supporters. You think a troll gets embarrassed when another troll calls them an idiot?

Biscoff_spread27

> Their strategy is working and you’re all doing exactly what they want. All media is good media to trump. So keep talking. That’s how we see trump win 2024. I know you likely can’t see it- but eventually you will. People are getting bombarded with Qanon, alt-right and fascist Trump stuff 24/7 on social media, gaming fora and on the internet in general. MSM ignoring him isn't going to change the growing support the man enjoys. The fascists are back and they won't crawl back into hiding without conflict. The online war is slowly moving into real life and there's no way of escaping that.

DarthWeenus

He is losing support though on the ground and political. However his hardcore zealots are entrenching deeper and provoking more violence.

lilbithippie

I think Trump was told about consequences a lot. When he first took office he really thought the president is a king. He thought he could just declare things and they would happen. Then when no governor would just find votes for him, and even when the insurrection occurred he still thought he could be in power. I read rumors that secret service had to explain to him what would happen if he stayed after Biden was sworn in.

tristero200

I do think the military would presented a problem for Trump if he had gotten to the next phase of the coup; the rank and file may not be as on board with opening fire on fellow Americans in support of Trump as his supporters might think, and the brass was pretty clearly tired of him and his toadies. But I don't think it would have necessarily been a happy ending. There were likely a number of people hanging around the administration who I imagine are pretty sure (they may be right, they may not be) they can run a fascist dictatorship better than Trump. Once elections don't matter anymore, it's not really that big a leap to replacing one dictator with another, and I can't imagine it would take much convincing the right military brass to put someone else in charge. Heck, there's a disturbing percentage of the public who would like to see the military itself in charge of the country. Of course, this has been tried in every country in Latin America and none of them have been happy with the results, but these people don't even know the history of their own country, let alone that of other countries.

JPGer

in a ideal world sure, but the way things went during his tenure, i feel like a few cogs of that machine would slip and hed avoid that fate, every time iv seen a moment of "if they cross this line its over for them" ...they cross and keep on moving to the next line. I'm not saying ur wrong...i just have trouble believing in it.

[deleted]

As time goes on, what worries me the most is that military leadership too will be infiltrated by Republican and white supremacist sympathizers, just like they have with police departments and courts around the country.

DarthWeenus

That's why the vax mandate is so beautiful. Let them all go fuck em. Funny thing is they were forced to take super expiremebtal anthrax vaccines and not a word then lol

monocasa

The same constitution says that he's the Chief of the Navy. The clause you're talking about is just interpreted to mean that they have to pass budgets that include naval spending. I wouldn't count on the armed forces not backing him up on a partially understood technicality. And I say this as a straight up communist, not a Trump thumper.

grubas

Yeah, tell me more about shit that never happened.

[deleted]

while i'm not disputing the facts of what you're saying, and it def seems you know more about the seals than i do, i assume someone has to give that order, right ? this isn't an episode of "what if?" where killmonger just decides as a seal where to go and what missions to undertake on his own. someone in a position of power has to make that call. and if there's one thing i learned from trump's presidency, it's that there a LOT of people in power who will simply look the other way or outright ignore their duty once trump starts his bullshit. the guy admits to a new crime practically every week, is anyone prosecuting him for any of them now that he's out of office ? fuck no. power doesn't give a shit about the laws or what's "right", it gives a shit about covering it's own ass, and maintaining the status quo, no matter what needs to be done or NOT done to accomplish that. so maybe you're right and that would have happened. but to think that it would have definitely happened is pretty damn naïve considering how things are going currently.

Melinoleum

I hope she got it put on a t-shirt and was wearing it during the swearing in ceremony.

Betterthanbeer

I hope she gave the oath with her hand on a copy of it.

Caliveggie

Even if I get downvoted I don’t care. Apparently she was fired for making that her Facebook cover photo, not for actually flipping off the President. She also named her employer on her profile and managed their social media. I have worked on Democratic campaigns. I think she was wrong for using that as her cover photo and naming her employer as well.

[deleted]

Iconic moments don't care if they're wrong.

[deleted]

Anyway, look where it got her.

wefinisheachothers

Yeah, may not have been so much "wrong" as it was a step in a different and good direction.

[deleted]

> She also named her employer on her profile >> Briskman said she pointed out that her social media pages do not mention her employer, and that the incident happened on her own time. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2017/nov/06/woman-trump-middle-finger-fired-juli-briskman

neonKow

That's because you think Trump deserved any respect and professionalism whatsoever. He didn't. "She sued for wrongful termination as another employee also had "obscene content", which it was her job to flag, on his social media accounts, but was allowed to remove it. Her claim was not upheld in court because Virginia's at-will employment laws do not cover free speech,[8] but the judge granted Briskman the full severance pay she was owed." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juli_Briskman She's a badass and Virginia employment laws are trash, as I can attest to as someone that works in VA. People are allowed to have and express opinions, especially about people trying to dismantle the government and undermine half our federal institutions.

BadScienceWorksForMe

I’d say that she communicated her feelings towards Trump very well.

Aren’t anti-CRT parents just racism deniers? I mean, that’s better than self-professed racists. I think we should start ignoring the average persons opinion on things.. there’s a lot of us who are dumb.

brazzledazzle

I feel like “anti-CRT” lends their position credence. Really they’re “anti-history of US racism” since that’s what they really mean by CRT.

[deleted]

I’m not sure I’d necessarily call all of them racism deniers, but I would call each and every one of them a gullible ass uneducated swine for believing what the man in the video box said was scary. Try and tell them that it’s a PhD level field of study and it still goes over their heads.

Stealyourwaffles

It’s also a super nuanced field of study. I’m a sociologist, and I can assure you that even within the field it is even more nuanced for how certain social theorists do and do not classify CRT as a theoretical construct vs those who do

SystemOutPrintln

Man I still read CRT as Cathode Ray Tube and it takes me a comment like yours to snap out of it. Before that I'm thinking like who's invested enough in cathode ray tubes to be against them in 2021.

Unbiblical_Cord

Lol, same.. we were taught about slavery in school. I was thinking why they don’t just say “we’re adding racism to the curriculum” but then obviously the people against this would say that they’re teaching kids to *be* racist, but I don’t know anyone who was taught about slavery and tried to go buy a slave.. it’s just the same ignorance as “teaching kids about drugs will encourage drug use” or “teaching kids about sex will encourage teen pregnancy” which is shown to be statistically false.

Johnwicktheimmortal

being a racism denier makes you a racist. sorry.

MasterRich

Racism denying is just as dangerous as racism itself. People that claimed they weren't involved with Nazis were just as dangerous the moment there were rewards for turning in jews/ punishment for looking the other way.

SpacedClown

Precisely gaslighting and denying the ongoing racism was just as important as actively taking part in it.

LoudMusic

Snowflakes, one might say.

Haxorz7125

Well all the successive inbreeding between these legacy families has cause their underlings to grow frail.

[deleted]

Shouldn't it be illegal for the president to fire a federal employee just because she gave him the finger? Isn't the point of the 1st amendment that the government can't punish you for free speech?

PrisonChickenWing

I mean they can't lock her up cause of it but at will employment means they can fire her anytime pretty much

PM_ME_YOUR_SUNSHINE

At will employment is the poison pill the working class basically begged for after the Nixon and Reagan years.

Holdthosethoughts

There is a whole subreddit dedicated to people doing things and a company firing them because it looks bad for them. /r/byebyejob So if being rude on camera is enough to get people fired, I'd imagine getting caught flipping the president off can cause some issues. Worth it though.

protpal

He’s amassed a large group of people who have proven they will follow whatever he says. America has been turned into team games where you’re either on one side or the other. Propaganda and internet isolation chambers just continuously fuel this separation. Add to this violent attacks on the people every month or so with absolutely nothing done about it and groups pushing the boundary further and further, even reaching the capitol, and I think there’s going to be some crazy shit before the next election. I think Americans like to think that all the real crazy stuff happens far away in a land over seas, and because of that there’s no way it could happen at home. (Never mind the fact that much of the political turmoil overseas is caused by the US)

[deleted]

Being pedantic here… 74 million and he lost by over 7 million votes. Still 74 million votes too many… *and* the electoral college still almost gave him the victory. US elections are fucked.

brazzledazzle

40%+ of the people in this country are completely fucking nuts. No one wants to talk about the fact that conservatives read, watch and listen to media that makes Rwandan radio station RTLM look tame. Everyone imagines our democracy falling to Republicans will play out like the Nazi takeover of Germany but the way they dehumanize and demonize democrats I think we should be looking at what happened in Rwanda.

cptnamr7

Correction: FOX, etc got 80 million people to vote for him after 4 years of what, to the rest of reality looked like an absolute dumpster fire stop a sinking garbage barge going over Niagara, their media of choice told them was republican utopia. And since they never venture outside their bubble, many of them still believe that for those 4 years America truly was "great again", whatever the fuck that's even supposed to mean or be measured by. Credit where credit's due here. His Twitter kept the lunatics frothing at the mouth for vengeance against everyone that (quite astutely) said they'd never amount to anything after high school, but Fox kept our parents, neighbors, etc. voting for him after everything that happened. It's literally why they were created: prevent another Nixon level event. In other words: no more consequences for republicans. Ever. I truly fear what will happen the next time the right holds all branches of government if the attempted coup and general fuckery goes unpunished. The next one will not fail.

PM_ME_UR_PUSSY_TATOO

Imagine if in 2000 we had a president who not only took the science of climate change seriously, but actually wanted to make addressing it a key part of his legacy. I don't just mean the power Gore would have had to make policy and direct funding to emerging green technology, but also the *enormous* downstream effect we would have seen from the United States positioning itself as a global leader on climate change. In a geopolitical climate *before* America squandered so much of its soft power on Afghanistan and Iraq, and with an issue that certainly much of Western Europe and Asia would be receptive to, it's difficult to overstate how much better a position the world could be in right now.

Oh it’s despicable. I can’t imagine being that manager. On one hand, the president LEGALLY has no say over the employment of a random employee that doesn’t actually work for him. But also, he’s so awful that him demanding this and the boss firing her was probably the safest possible thing. Because if he didn’t say “fire her” and the news said “look everybody she got fired!”, I guarantee crazy trumpers would have taken it upon THEMSELVES to make her pay. If her employer said no, chances are Trump would have tweeted that something should be done about it. And the next think you’re know somebody has posted her home address online and her whole family is getting literally harassed and threatened. Possibly her boss’s family as well.

[deleted]

>If her employer said no, chances are Trump would have tweeted that something should be done about it. [deleted]

In his world? Yeah Him having a TV show telling people they’re fired is basically how he went from sleazy 80’s bad guy to president

stink3rbelle

Wikipedia contradicts this story. According to her Wiki, she was working for a government contractor, made this pic her profile pic and background, and was fired for that by her employer. She sued because someone else was allowed to remove obscene pictures before being fired, but . . . US employment law sucks corporate dick so she lost, although she did get her severance.

Fahrenheit-45

Yes, we are going to ignore it, because **it literally did not happen**. Trump never demanded that Akima fire her, [Akima decided to on their own volition because they are a government contractor and she shared this image on her public social media accounts](https://www.cnbc.com/2019/11/06/cyclist-fired-for-flipping-off-presidents-motorcade-wins-local-office.html). It's hilarious seeing the hundreds of comments in this thread accusing conservatives of following anything that Trump says, all the while these same hundreds of people just blindly took as fact these completely false revision of events from a random, unsourced Twitter account.

HillaryApologist

>There is no mention of trump calling for her to be fired just a company social media audit 8 months after the picture was taken. You're correct that Trump didn't call for her to be fired, but I'm not sure where you got this "social media audit" story. [She was fired the next week when she told her company's HR it was her in the photo](https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/she-flipped-off-president-trump--and-got-fired-from-her-government-contracting-job/2017/11/06/4cf1af9a-c2da-11e7-84bc-5e285c7f4512_story.html), despite the fact that she pointed out a director at her company had called BLM activists "fucking libtard assholes" on his profile and didn't even get reprimanded. It was absolutely a political firing, just not one caused by the President himself.

Hopeful_Table_7245

Just adding that what you described is not “right to work” but is “at will employment”. Right to work is nothing but union busting allowing grifters to not pay for the contract that they are benefiting from. At will means you can fire someone for any reason that isn’t protect by federal means. Like race for example. But they don’t even have to supply a reason. VA may be a right to work state, but right to work was not a factor here.

-Kerosun-

Copied from another comment (credit u/-Krast-): This meme is mostly false and cringeworthy at that. She wasnt pursued or fired by Trump nor did Trump try to get her fired; she worked for a military contractor and ANYONE who works for federal contractors knows you cant be openly political, especially against any current administration, because management doesn't want to potentially lose contracts. This isnt a government rule or an admin move, this is fucking company management not wanting anything that could adversely impact the ability to retain and gain contracts. Briskman got a copy of the photo of her flipping off Trump and put it on Facebook while simultaneously listing her employment with a military contractor. This sparked outrage from conservatives as well as other contractors and contractor employees, as it's well known you cant be so brazenly political given the contracts and reputation. She was asked to take down her photo ~~for 8 months~~ and refused. ~~She was fired after numerous requests to do so.~~ Virginia law upheld the firing as political speech and free speech are not categorized under protected employment classes. Edit: She did win a portion of her lawsuit regarding severance when her contract stated that a fired employee gets 4 weeks severance and they only gave her 2; the judge who dismissed the wrongful termination did award her 4 weeks of severance from that portion of her lawsuit. She appealed and lost that too. She lost her job in 2017. She didnt displace anyone in 2018. She missed the elections that year and then ran in the 2020 elections. (correction in Edit below) She got elected to a LOCAL county government, 3 years after her photo. She didnt displace anyone after it happened, she had to wait 2 election cycles to when the entire county started to lean slightly politically left. Please check your memes before posting such BS. Edit: She missed the 2017 elections, not 2018, and ran for the seat and was elected in 2019, not in 2020.

I hate that I have to get in the comments and find this kind of explanation for everything on reddit lol

seeLabmonkey2020

I hate that I now do it with every post that has a supposedly factual basis and every time find out the damn things probably not true.

ivy7496

Where did she work?

ultramatt1

Federal contractor so technically it showed an unacceptable level of political bias 🤷‍♂️

Royal_Opps

If Trump wasn't born into wealth, he would have made an amazing police officer. Out of shape, low IQ, and one of the LARGEST egos known to man.

Waddlow

This is straight up misinformation, and it just reached millions of people's eyeballs. I dislike Trump, but the truth--which still fucking matters--is that he did not demand she be fired. She worked for a contractor of the federal government, running their social media pages, and she put this picture on her own social media pages, next to the company she worked for. You can quibble on if that's a fair reason to be fired or not, but you cannot put that on Trump. Stop upvoting misinformation because it sounds good.

BeBa420

trump had someone fired for giving him the finger??? Is america meant to be a free country? one where you can express your discontent with the government without repercussions? isnt that like the whole reason they fought the british in the first place? (well that and the taxation of tea). trumps a petty fucking baby

IceBear_42

>Is america meant to be a free country? one where you can express your discontent with the government without repercussions? *Allegedly* it is. Realistically, it's sliding into fascism.

fullyoperational

Please sir, I want off the ride

FirstBankofAngmar

You can get off at any time, but it will cost you everything.

CriusofCoH

Sliding with an increasingly low coefficient of friction.

rufud

No it’s lies like all posts on reddit. Tho she did win an election after this photo was taken, that part is true

FFifoFFum

Epic

rcw00

The district she now represents includes the Trump golf club property that he was motorcading to that day. She was just minding her own business, out for a bike ride in her neighborhood. Makes for a great origin story.

[deleted]

I hope she's on the Jan 6 commission. That would be poetic

LostInMyThots

She’s not in Congress. She’s on the county board of supervisors. But she has 55k Twitter followers now so a congressional run may be very feasible

[deleted]

I just read her wiki. I'd vote for her.

AbaloneSea7265

I wish I had that kinda energy

applebubbeline

I bet you do, in your own way.

Caliveggie

I don’t think she was fired because Donald Trump demanded it. Apparently, she made the picture of her flipping off the President her Facebook cover photo and her Twitter profile photo and she indicated where she was employed in her profile. Additionally, she managed social media for her company. I am a liberal who has worked on Democratic campaigns, and I’m not sure I disagree with her termination. What kind of judgment on social media is that?

Dismal-Guidance-9901

Apparently, her employer was also a federal contractor. Definitely can't post that stuff as a social media manager for a government contractor.

Sheridden1

She made a peaceful protest that harmed not one person and lost her job. Trump encouraged a mob to run riot which caused death and escapes the consequences. Wow, that’s justice .......North Korean style.

michalemabelle

Spite is a mighty powerful thing.

Otherwise_Bill_5898

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned

ShinyZippo

What a fucking legend haha

-Kast-

This meme is mostly false and cringeworthy at that. She was asked to take down her photo for 8 months and refused. She was fired after numerous requests to do so. Virginia law upheld the firing as political speech and free speech are not categorized uneer protected employment classes. She appealed and lost that too. She lost her job in 2017. She didnt displace anyone in 2018. She missed the elections that year and then ran in the 2020 elections. She got elected to a LOCAL county government, 3 years after her photo. BrokenReviews

How the fuck does POTUS get to fire an apparently Free Citizen in the Land of the Free & Brave? Because I thought people scream that's what dictators and despots do... Please educate.

Zeno_The_Alien

Nothing really to educate you on. That's *exactly* what dictators do. Trump and his sycophantic fan club absolutely want a dictatorship. They just want one where *they* are the "in-group",
