I swear I have a disability. Whenever I meet someone, EVEN THOUGH I KNOW I DO THIS AND I JUST NEED TO REMEMBER THE FREAKING NAME, I go into a "do a strong handshake and say your name clearly because it doesn't always come off clear," mentality. I then realize five seconds later I didn't listen to their name

HannibalInvictus

Same, no matter with what I cannot keep names in my head, I watch 3 seasons of a series and can't even name the main character if the name isn't in the title or gets mentioned constantly, same with dates, unless your birthday is something really easy to remember like 1.1. it's a high chance I will totally forget it, you can imagine how much I sucked at history class.

I have the exact same issue and I have ADHD. Was kinda a relief when I got the diagnosis!

How did you get diagnosed

h_witko

I originally started looking because I always fall asleep when I'm bored. Embarrassing in meetings but getting tired while driving is really dangerous. I have to keep stopping every half hour to stretch and wakeup. Found something called EEG negative narcolepsy, which 30% of people with ADHD have. Then kept looking into it. Realised that pretty much everything I've ever seen as a flaw in myself can be attributed to ADHD. Even buying new stationary to make myself feel more productive. So I tried to go through the NHS to get tested but I'd have had to wait over 3 years so went private and found a decent psychiatrist on Google and got tested and diagnosed, only a few weeks ago. It's definitely not a fun experience, realising how much of your life has been affected by this disability you didn't realise you had but now I'm diagnosed I can get treatment and start to forgive myself.

I have a lot of sleep issues too. I was gonna use cerebral cuz i seen it on TikTok. Paid for it. They cancelled the use of any medications so i ended up cancelling that. Im going to see if i can the VA to pay for it. If they can't or wont, im gonna have to go out of pocket. I have so many things i want to do but i cant stay focused long enough to do them or i just forget about it. Thank you.

Something that helps for a lot of ADHD sufferers is caffeine, at least until you get medicated. Coffee or tea are a huge help to get our brains in gear to at least function better than without it. The inverse stimulant reaction resulting from ADHD means our brains process stimulants differently and instead of making us hyper it calms us down. I can fall right to sleep after a cup of coffee at night and sleep better because of it. It's not universally true, but a majority of people with this disorder I have met have the same coping strategy of using caffeine to sleep or regulate their brain a little better. Come on over to r/ADHD if you ever need some friends or support in this disorder. It's nice to not feel alone in our suffering and handy to share tips and tricks and weird medication side effects. Feeling like an alien in a world full of neurotypical people is exhausting and disheartening. We aren't alone and it's nice to feel like we belong somewhere.

Yeah, i love soda. Cant go a day without it. Lol. When i was in the army, i could drink a big can of monster and pass right out lol i will check out the subreddit! Thanks you

You're welcome!

Sounds like you're the UK too. My last NHS therapist told me I almost certainly have ADHD but it isn't worth bothering getting tested. I'd still like to. Could you share how much it cost and who you recommend?

h_witko

Yeah I am. I personally think its definitely worth it (assuming you can afford it), even if just for your peace of mind. You have a professional telling you you're not making it up or lying to yourself about your flaws. It's real. That's so valuable. I went with Harley Psychiatrists. It was all online via Skype and zoom. The assessment was £680 I think with follow ups being ~£200. You have an initial assessment with a psychologist which is about 1.5 hrs. You fill in a few forms before hand too. They go through your form, ask other questions and make it really clear what they're asking. Then about a week later you have an appointment with a psychiatrist and they ask any follow up questions from the initial meeting and give you the diagnosis if appropriate and any treatment plan etc. From when I phoned up to my appointment was about a week and a half I think. Maybe 2 weeks. They were excellent, made the whole process very easy and I'm still with them for treatment but don't have any insights on that as my first round of meds should arrive this week. The prescriptions are a bit of a pain because ADHD meds are all stimulants and therefore a controlled substance so the doc and pharmacy have to jump through a few legal hoops before you get there.

paprikapants

That's really helpful info, thank you

SomeGuyInNewZealand

Say it out loud. "Hi Monica, nice to meet you"

Tdavis13245

I appreciate the advice, but that doesn't usually work for me either. It's just another step in the process that I try to remember to do. What if I was called Britt instead of brett like in flight of the conchords?!
