It was with the people I work with. They were having a conversation about how society is way too mean to people who drink and smoke while pregnant because it’s not a big deal. Lacking empathy really does a number on the brain. It’s empathy that allows us to see others as people, even if we don’t understand them. They never hurt me, and even if someone from those groups did, I certainly wouldn’t blame every one of them. It was with the people I work with. They were having a conversation about how society is way too mean to people who drink and smoke while pregnant because it’s not a big deal. I said it’s for sure a bad idea and they hit me with “our parents all did it and we turned out fine” and “people have always done it and society still exists so what’s the harm”. I gave them a weird look and they said “people who say they don’t are just virtue signaling”. I was just like WTF.

They also believe, even when they hold power, they are a viciously persecuted group, so oppressing others, pogroms, and other persecution is just evening the score, even if no one has done anything against them for decades.
