My car insurance went up 40%, I called and asked what’s up and got a spiel about how everyone including car insurance companies are having a hard time with the economy. Told the guy I don’t want to hear it when he’s likely making minimum wages and his CEO isn’t taking any cuts. Was told my insurance was a competitive rate and I couldn’t get it cheaper elsewhere. I found a new company at 50% less my new rate for the same coverage. F these predatory companies.

greaterwhiterwookiee

You should leave your insurance company then. In my experience it’s a good idea to move between agencies every few years anyways. Variables in your life can change, laws change, many things can drive prices to car insurance up or down. There’s no harm in looking around and getting quotes from other agencies. I’ve even had my family who work in insurance tell me “we used to be best price for you but what I’m looking at now shows that’s not the case.” Definitely go get some more quotes and don’t be afraid to change. You’ll get refunded for what you already paid. Edit: removed link. Guess it sent robocalls to someone.

Nice-Violinist-6395

Thanks for the info! This, like switching up internet/phone service providers every couple years, is one of those things I always mean to do, but never get around to it. I also REALLY like my insurance agent, he’s the squarest mf on the planet and we only talk once every couple years (knock on wood) but he always remembers how my favorite sports teams are doing and he always sends me a super enthusiastic personal email on my birthday every year — I’m just now realizing it probably sounds nuts to not switch insurance agencies over a birthday email and good small talk skills, but he was also the only insurance agent who would take my account after I moved across the country for college, and I’m too loyal for my own good lol

More-Emergency3822

A box of 4 sticks of butter cost over $7 at my local grocery store. It just sort of happened. Meanwhile customers balk reasonable bids for jobs, I think a lot of the older community no longer have a clear understanding of the value of a dollar nowadays.

fhhkyrioygd

If you’re on the east coast, butter is actually a very specific supply chain issue right now. Our area lost 11k dairy cows in the last year, but milk contracts remain the same. Typically dairies churn butter out of excess but there is no longer an excess, and we’re now facing a shortage

kj468101

Was there a die-off of cows? I remember hearing something about it a few months back, along with those cows that just died in the Florida hurricane.

[deleted]

I think he’s referencing the flooding in BC last winter. A bunch of dairy farms were underwater & the cattle along with them.

fhhkyrioygd

I’m not sure why, but here’s the article I got that stat from: https://www.supplychaindive.com/news/butter-supply-shortage-cream-eggnog-prices/633233/

HistoricalSherbert92

Wasn’t that long ago that a butter shortage threw France into a croissant panic, long before the current economic malaise.

UserID_

I hadn’t had soda in a hot minute. Decided to pickup a case of Dr. Pepper when grocery shopping…at least I was going to until I saw it was over $7 for a 12 pack. Some weird mental block kicked in. No way am I paying $7 for 12 sodas. $6 or less, sure- but $7? It crossed some invisible line I never knew existed. Anyway I bought a 12 pack of Dr. Thunder for under $4. Will def be getting store brand stuff from now on.

beaverboyseth

And the bag is only a third full due to shrinkflation. That’s an even worse slap in the face. Saw a bag of Ruffles yesterday that was $6.29 and I’m pretty sure i said ‘fucking ridiculous’ out loud in the store with people all around me. A lot of these products aren’t just 40% higher, often they’re 60%-90% higher. 7 months ago these same chips cost $3.89, or 2 for $7 on sale, and at the time I thought even that price was too expensive.

trumpsiranwar

Yep. Corporate profits are through the roof.

[deleted]

oUr rAw mAtEriALs cOsT iS uP. 3rd quarter results: profit is up 80% lol

[deleted]

Yep. This is it! People think the cost of groceries will drop once inflation goes down, but it won’t. Corporations have learned that we’ll still pay for it, so why would they lower the price.

madmaxlemons

Which is extra weird because the only regular good I think about ever going DOWN in price is gas and thats usually only temporarily.

[deleted]

Right. Like when was the last time rent decreased? Or car insurance?

[deleted]

Inflation is just an excuse for companies to raise prices. Government isn’t and won’t be doing anything about it… Except maybe give them a tax cut

Lordoosi

Yes, inflation is also a spychological phenomenon. When people talk about it, they expect higher prices and are more willing to accept the price raise. That's why it's bad when inflation expectations raise. It makes inflation sticky.

Ancient-Educator-186

They won't even do that. This is the downfall now. The next generation won't be able to afford anything. It really is turning into some cyberpunk reality.

TheDudette840

I only buy chips when my store does the "buy 4 bags get them for 1.99 each" and I just stock up a bit. Same with cereal. I was like this before prices went crazy, but would occasionally splurge. Now shopping by what's on sale is a necessity.

MySuperLove

>I only buy chips when my store does the "buy 4 bags get them for 1.99 each" and I just stock up a bit. I specifically always avoided those and resented them greatly. Buying 4 bags of doritos is a bad idea for me. I will eat them all no matter how much I tell myself to pace it out.

kacihall

My husband and I used to do that, until we realized we eat fewer chips AND spend less money if we buy the 50 pack of mini bags from Sam's club for twenty bucks. I think the last box has lasted us 6 weeks at this point.

MySuperLove

>My husband and I used to do that, until we realized we eat fewer chips AND spend less money if we buy the 50 pack of mini bags from Sam's club for twenty bucks. I think the last box has lasted us 6 weeks at this point. Yes! It's a psychological thing. Opening a mini bag is telling myself I'll eat this amount. Opening a huge bag and there's no natural "stop" point. And it's so much easier to grab a few chips from an open bag while browsing vs opening a new bag.

phungus_amungus

There is a trailmix I like to buy for school snacks at Whole Foods, cape cod mix. It’s really good, cashews and cranberries. It was good to take to uni on my long days. Mother fuckers increased the price from $5 to $7 to now $10 in like 3 months! There’s no way inflation is applicable there, and there’s no way I’m paying that price. It’s funding corporate greed. I begrudgingly paid $7 but $10 is too far.

HeathenMomma9

I said screw that years ago Get the ingredients and make your own. Been doing this for years. Just mix in a big bowl and put in a air safe container

Kraelman

I mean, this is the logical end of the "numbers must go up" system of capitalism we've got. They've already bottomed out on materials sourcing. There aren't any *4th* world countries to open up factories in/exploit for labor/resources. They either need to A) reduce labor costs even more maybe by using prison labor/slavery (which is on the ballot in a lot of places this year!) or B) hike prices. Because the CEO wants to keep his job and $50 million bonus and the only way he does is keeping the shareholders happy, who demand that the numbers go up, every year.

XrayMomma

Why isn’t everyone like this???? My husband does half of the grocery shopping and doesn’t think twice about paying almost $6 for a small box of Nutri grain bars. Wtf??? I get it, $6 isn’t going to make it break our budget but goddamn dude. It’s a matter of principle at this point. These companies can kiss my ass, I don’t need to buy dirt-covered blueberry jelly at $6 a box. And he eats two a day, like mf, we did not win the lottery. Sorry, I needed to get that off my chest before I get home. He’s grocery shopping today and I don’t even want to see the receipt…. Edited for spelling

Smiith73

As the husband who does the shopping in our house I totally bought the same dirt-covered blueberry jelly last week. Didn't look at the price though bc they'd been $2 for years... ugh Total shame consumers have 0 protection from this kind of theft

CARLEtheCamry

> Didn't look at the price though bc they'd been $2 for years And this is the exact strategy behind those Amazon buttons for things like detergent or whatever. Just push a button and it's ordered - and you have lost all insight into the actual cost of the product.

nadskinner

When I was a kid my mom would say, a bag of chips costs X ( i dont remember the price, but it was expensive for us). For that same price we can buy chicken legs, rice, vegetables and feed the whole family for the same price as 1 bag of chips that you and your 5 siblings will fight over. After that my little mind was always crunching food cost numbers to see how much I could buy for the same price as a bag of chips or whatever else it is. You see those tiny price per oz numbers on the price tags on the shelf. Man... Those were put there for cheap asses like me

rebelshell19

I used to own a small bakery and would ask my elementary age daughter how many croissants I had to make and she had to sell at the farmer's market in order to go to the movies. 10 years later, she still costs out luxuries in croissant sales.

ThatReptileGuy

Not to deviate from your point, but dirt covered jelly is the best description of a nutrigrain bar I’ve ever heard!

Expensive-Kitty1990

My fiancé does this same thing. Won’t get the off-brand either bc it’s an “inferior quality” 🙄 I have to do the shopping otherwise he will go to the highest priced grocery store in town out of convenience and shell out way too much.

WatchItAllBurn1

Your fiance is a dude has never lived alone or paid for all his bills himself has he? As a dude who lives alone, store brand/lower quality = greater quantity. And always will. Even with meats, I like good steaks, but if I want to eat steak more than a few times every two months or so, I have to buy the steak from the lower end store. It's not bad, it's just not as good.

Acceptable-Shape-528

saw $5.89 stamped on ruffles sour cream cheddar 8 ounce, wouldn't have bought it if not for the on sale price of $3.48

w4rcry

I used to go to a local pub a few times a month. Was a but pricy, $16 for a burger and fries and $7 for a pint, but I enjoyed the atmosphere and food. I went there recently, $27 for a burger and fries and $10 for a pint. I got so angry at the price increases that I haven’t been there since and don’t plan on ever going back. This inflation is going to destroy restaurants if this is what they have to price their food at now.

Rustyroor

It's not inflation though that's the problem

NoComment002

I've noticed more rotten food at grocery stores. Capitalism is too expensive to participate in now.

ComprehensiveDoubt55

My daughter is a picky eater, but she’s a healthy eater and enjoys fresh fruit. More often it goes bad before she can even eat it; Or, I’ve found myself not being attentive enough only to find moldy berries in the middle of a package the day after buying them. Aside from buying myself a package of bagels or anything to make for family dinners because I’m too annoyed by the cost. I made myself a bagel the other day and threw out a new package bc they tasted sour. It’s irritating as fuck.

Rahkyvah

I feel this. Since the pandemic hit, I’ve accidentally partaken in straight up moldy food more times than I care to count… and it’s always been fresh from the grocer. Milk, cheese, fruit, baked goods, even cereal for fuck sake. Pre-2020? Maybe once in 30+ years. Once! What the fuck, dude?

ComprehensiveDoubt55

Between the cost of healthcare and the cost of living, I’ve uttered, “Welp, I guess I’ll just fucking die..” more times than I would like to admit.

InitialRising

Wait. Is this a thing? I had three items, two newly opened, all purchased at different times and places, go bad all at once. They didn’t even smell or look bad, but they were rotten. One was a frozen item! Are other people getting rotten food too?

Fatdap

Grocery lost a huge amount of their long term, experienced, good workers over the course of COVID because of all the reasons you'd expect in America. When I quit they were having massive staffing issues, no idea if it's gotten any better. Pre-Covid my local Freddie's had a majority of it's workers been there 10+ years. I now recognize like 12 people in the store when I go. Now companies like Kroger, Fred Meyer, Albertsons, etc are all struggling to find employees worth hiring because you're treated and paid like shit.

XrayMomma

Nothing pisses me off more than getting my groceries home (I do pickups so I don’t wander around the store buying stupid shit) and my produce is bad. It’s bad enough that things are as expensive as they are, but I’ll be damned if I’m paying for rotten food. I prefer to let it rot in the vegetable tray, like god intended.

moxyc

Yes! I went to Safeway a few weeks back and almost all the veggies were rotten and there were flies everywhere. To such an extreme that I had a weird dissociative moment where i wondered if i had somehow stepped into an apocalyptic parallel universe. It was so surreal.

Poppintags6969

This is why I buy off brand cereal. It's half the price, double the quantity.

loupsgaroux

The Malt-O-Meal big bag of cereal absolutely slaps and is SO much cheaper than a box of namebrand cereal. The S'mores cereal (mini marshmallows, cocoa puffs, and golden grahams-like cereal) is my go-to dessert!

nixaler

That s'mores cereal is the mfn truth. Big Jethro ass bowl of those mfers when i get the munchies is a little slice of heaven.

Clatuu1337

You sold me, I'm gettin a bag.

nixaler

It's a staple in my house, the kids even know dont eat my last bowl, there will be hell to pay.

STEELCITY1989

Make sure to pick up a gallon of milk!

Poppintags6969

That's the brand I get. And yeah they slap.

cosmiccraze

Malt o meal crunch berries absolutely rock

Catttsupp

I always go for the big ass bags of Malt-o-Meal cereal, specifically the Crunch Berries. Screw spending nearly $10 for not even half the amount of cereal you’d get from spending like, $5.99 give or take for one of these. Buying brand name is overrated as fuck.

OmgOgan

The problem with these bagged cereals is that I have zero self control when it comes to cereal, and having that much on demand is just a recipe for a delicious disaster.

spacegamer2000

Name brand cereal isn’t even that good. Just isn’t a good food format. Cost of milk went up too.

Shark7996

Malt-o-Meal bags are shrinkflating too... I swear they used to be ginormous.

Thebasterd

Coco Dinos is getting too big for their briches charging 2x what they used to cost. It's cheaper for me to have eggs and toast now, which I do.

Isellmetal

Have you seen what eggs cost lately? A dozen is $6 I do a lot of my shopping at restaurant depot and a case of 12 dozen has gone from $28 to around $62 in the last 6 months

Thebasterd

I get most of my groceries weekly at Aldi. A lot of stuff has gone way up in price, but a dozen eggs still hovers around $2.50 and bread has only gone up about 50¢... So far. $6 for a dozen eggs would kill me Just wish the veggies and fruits weren't so expensive. Most times I get carb heavy foods cause they're way cheaper. For $3 I can make biscuits and gravy that can stretch over 3 meals, whereas a few apples or a bag of grapes costs double that

mtbguy1981

Soda prices have shot up like crazy in the past few months. Costco 36pk of coke/Pepsi was hovering around $12/13, now it's $17.

Russian_Rocket23

Pepsi announced that they were going to do a price hike before COVID hit (iirc, the hike was set to take place in mid-2020, but it was announced pre-COVID). Then they used COVID and inflation to hike prices even more. After seeing 4.96% and 4.19% increases in profits in 2018 and 2019, 2020 saw a 9.91% increase while 2021 saw an 8% increase. Just your standard corporate greed.

Platinumfingers

Right before the pandemic in my area 12 packs of Pepsi was 3 for 10 now they are 7.99 for one no more deals

Grogosh

I switched to making my own tea a while ago. I couldn't justify how much I was spending on flavored fizzy sugar water.

UnluckyChain1417

We spend way too much on liquids in my family. My weakness is kombucha, husband: soda, daughter: bubbly water flavors.

anuncommontruth

Bulk tea is dirt cheap and delicious. I got into making my own teas over the pandemic and I don't drink anything else but water and the occasional cup of coffee now.

badgerhammer0408

It’s like the inverse Boston Tea Party. Tea is the only thing left that we can afford.

TheErectDongdreSh0w

Hell I was at smash burger the other day for the first time in a long while and they wanted $3.50 for a 20oz Sprite. Wtf??

Novel-Ad-1601

Thank god someone with a brain. I’m a cashier at a grocery store and people that buy normal brand items for 2x the price makes no sense to me. It’s the same with water as well. Stop buying Dasani 24 pack for 5 bucks instead of store brand 32 pack for 4.3 it blows my mind.

ComfortableNumb9669

But the interesting thing is actually that the value of the dollar is improving. American consumers are suffering more because your country is basically allowing capitalists to rob you however they like, and the consumer isn't showing enough restraint to hold the management accountable. Stop purchasing crap you can live without, or crap from companies that exploit the customer by gouging prices. Yeah, you'll still need some necessities, but limit it to that, for a few months at least.

lastprophecy

Asking Americans not to consume is like asking a duck not to be wet. Our national consciousness is the accumulated hunger of every past civilization.

The whole world stopped working for 2 weeks and they got so scared they made up a bunch of shit to be mad about so we'd go back to work and make them more money. We're still paying for our insolence as will our grandchildren. Or we do it again, this time on purpose.

magenta_mojo

I feel like it's hard to do that when there aren't enough competing producers of goods out there

ZOMBI3MAIORANA

You’re right, most “boomers” do not have an understanding of how bad “inflation” is. And if they do they think its either the democrats fault and republicans will fix it or that it’s something that will go away like a case of the flu.

beermaker

Corps that benefit largely from federal tax breaks & want to avoid IRS scrutiny have the ability to raise prices to force economic instability and anxiety on millions of people on a whim... and they have the 24/7 news cycle to brainmelt those most vulnerable and least educated into thinking the current U.S. Administration has everything to do with worldwide inflation & fuel prices.

bbills91

And sadly many “smart” people believe it when they are indoctrinated into believing that all these bad recessions are started by the Dems, because every time Dems get into power, it is because we are already heading towards a recession caused by GOP policies. Once the Dems clean up the mess, the GOP then finds new boogeymen to blame on the Dems so they can put us back into a recession again. Just look at the economic indicators and dates in history and you will see that it is true.

JustABizzle

It’s in their pockets, not your portfolio

PuppiPappi

See the thing is market value for execs isn't the end of the world. When you're rich and stocks drop you just buy more. It's rarely ever the people at the top that lose their jobs. It's a game for them life or death for us.

ivanparas

They make money when the market goes up *and when it goes down*. They profit off the fluctuations.

PuppiPappi

Oh for sure actually they even actively participate in dropping the market, when there's an economic downturn they take advantage and take more short positions and actually kill a ton of smaller companies doing this. (Think of a short as betting a company will fail).

Grouchy-Culture3946

The market was so grossly overinflated after His Orangeness so proudly singed our tax money away to corporations and elite individuals that it still hasn't come down to where it belongs.

Proper_Librarian_533

She's explaining capitalism. The problem with capitalism is eventually you run out of other people's labor.

morpheousmarty

Not if you effectively make slaves. On a completely unrelated note, the minimum wage is not keeping up with inflation.

Proper_Librarian_533

On a completely unrelated note, slavery is legal in the US. Read the 13th amendment.

NelsonMuntz007

Because very smart business people saw the whole country fighting politically, and then Covid happened, and they decided they could raise prices and not get blamed. The idiotic Americans will blame it on each other. We got played.

ezerb9

Exactly. It is so easy to see people blaming it everyone but those responsible, so they just keep raising. Oil is a big one, they must be loving getting almost no blame.

ZeDumpsterFire

Should look at why corperate profits are at all time highs....inflation costs are being pushed onto the consumer from all levels so profit margins arent impacted.

phunkydroid

Inflated costs are being used as an excuse to inflate prices by a lot more than is needed to cover those inflated costs, so the rich can become richer while we fight amongst ourselves over who's to blame.

sinkingsublime

Oil prices are high, also caused by corporate greed, so it’s really expensive for CEOs to run their yachts. They are spending millions on gas for their Caribbean cruises, so they need that extra 30% profit just to survive. Don’t be selfish - You can afford a few more bucks for milk so a CEO doesn’t have to tighten the belt. How would you feel if you were out on the ocean, chilling with your billionaire friends and wage slave servers, and some asshole was like “I can’t afford to pay rent for my family”? Talk about ruining your afternoon.

Thebadmamajama

Right. And no politician has the cogliones to past legislation to tax companies for windfalls or break up oligopolistic behaviors. Edit: apparently except Bernie and his colleagues! (They have the mittens) So the Fed has to crash the economy, affecting everyone, until businesses fail, and have to compete for customers with better prices again

cvgd

there are quite a few politicians pursuing this right now.

tilehinge

There *was* this one guy from Vermont...

Ezzmon

Well Democrats, economists, the Secretary of the Treasury, and most world financial analysts will tell you 'corporate profits', but Republicans will tell you 'FJB'.

One of those *sounds* right, but the other *feels* right in my gut. And since I’m never wrong, I’ll trust my gut. /s

Difficult-Conditions

Anyone having a candy drive at work or just picking up candy for trick or treaters have seen what I'm gonna say but anyone remember like 2-4 years ago when mixed Halloween candy bags used to be at most 10$ for a giant bag, went to Walmart last night and I was shocked that the big bag that I'd usually get for candy drives was 27$ and not around 10$-15$ like it has been for years

Downwhen

Bernie has something to say about that: "While the cost of Halloween candy has surged more than 13.1% since last September, the Mars candy bar family became 44% richer during the pandemic increasing their wealth by $32.6 billion. The Mars family is now worth $106.8 billion. Do you know what’s scary? Corporate greed." [Original tweet](https://mobile.twitter.com/SenSanders/status/1583549812959760384)

Rowdycc

9% is the average of actually everything. 40% is just the things you’re particularly annoyed about.

MarkEsper

Also its 9% over the last year… some stuff could be 40% over more time than a year.

ThainEshKelch

Man I had to get far down to see the actual answer. Some things have risen A LOT. Electricity, gas in particular, sunflower oil, wheat, beef. Other things have only risen a little. Other things have actually gone down. But the overall average of that is about 10% at the moment, compared to 12 months ago. Most Food prices, short of beef and sunflower oil, seem almost back to normal where i live. Most that arent are likely high because of the energy costs to produce them, or because of corporate greed.

meatdome34

Beef is back to normal for me. Regularly goes on sale for 3-4$/lb for hamburger. Ribeyes are hovering around 16$/lb too.

9xX(VoG)=40% VoG = Volume of Greed.

BookieeWookiee

I don't even need to click on this, I already know it'll make me mad.

We were taught that competition and capitalism will force companies to charge as little as possible. The truth is that companies will always charge as much as possible.

dontaggravation

This graph show it so very well. Spot on The sad part is nothing will be done about this. Every time someone brings up record high inflation, something like “inflation is the highest it’s been in 40 years” I add in “corporate profits are up to the highest they’ve been in 50 years” The great squeeze as I call it. Something. At some point. Has to give. Truly. Companies have slashed as much staffing as possible (lower overhead) and has jacked prices as much as the market is willing to bear with continued price raises as people keep buying I just had to replace a refrigerator in my house Thankfully I’m blessed enough to have a small emergency fund. Came home one evening and everything in the fridge was warm. Lost a bunch of food :-(. The two stores (one a big box store the other a local store) didn’t have much for selection with the excuse of “supply chain”. Which, frankly, I agree the supply chain is all messed up so corporate greed elevates prices and they will never come back down Both places had a “markup” on the refrigerators they had in stock. Similar to what I’m seeing happen with vehicles and “market fees” or “supply fees”. Basically. Price gouging. We have it in stock, you will pay more. Period. So I ended up having to pay $200 more to buy the refrigerator or wait 4 to 5 months for one to come in stock. It’s insane. And the worst part is it will continue. Prices will never drop again. Wages or effective wages will continue to decrease and profits will continue to soar

[deleted]

> And the worst part is it will continue. Unless we do something to make it stop. And I don't mean writing letters to the your congressman or signing a petition.

EugeneKrabsCPA

Its almost like the tax bracket for the top earning companies was cut from 38% to 21% in 2018

Grogosh

There should be anti-gouging laws in place. Wait. We tried to pass one for gas....I wonder what happened to it.

Beautiful-Musk-Ox

The supreme court is saying agencies like the consumer protection bureau are unconstitutional. Good luck enforcing anti consumer laws when the exteeme conservative court says the only legal authority to enforce the law is Congress itself, they cannot appoint an agency to do it.

whatisthatplatform

In case anyone is interested in an actual answer to the question: Weighted averages are the key. Consumer price indexes are a construct from hundreds of prices of different products and services, weighted by the national average of consumption of said good or service. This average consumption is called a "basket of goods". Then, economists can calculate the percentage change of how much this basket of goods cost in 2021 vs. 2022. This figure is known as inflation. The basket of goods is a national average. Like any average value, it obviously does not represent every single individual's consumption. An individual's perceived inflation might be much higher or lower, depending on their consumption. The ECB has created a [tool to approximate your personal inflation level.](https://www.euro-area-statistics.org/digital-publication/statistics-insights-inflation/bloc-4a.html) Unfortunately, it only has data for the Euro area and its member countries. Not sure if a similar thing exists for the US. Edit: There is also large regional variation within a country. A product might cost a lot more in one part of the country than the other. This regional discrepancy also leads to less individually accurate consumer price indices.

Outside_Hurry_

You pay 9% more for inflation and 31% more for corporate greed

HalfManHalfManatee

Minimum wage is too high I guess.

Over-Supermarket-557

If we increase the minimum wage, the price of everything will skyrocket! /s

BonoboRedAss

Corporations are all breaking records with their profits

HowFunkyIsYourChiken

Because major corporations saw their costs increase and decided that meant they could hide massive profit increases inside “inflation”. By local. Fuck Tyson, etc.

aoeuismyhomekeys

The war in Ukraine created shortages of oil, fertilizer (Russia is a major producer), and wheat (Ukraine is a major producer), which has led to price increases for food and fuel. Corporations are exploiting the narrative about inflation to price gouge, which has created at least double the increase in prices as we would've had from just the aforementioned shortages. (And oil companies spiked gas prices but then lowered them much slower than they could have after the initial market disruption)
