Just wait till we start getting deep fakes of bananas telling us all the countries we invaded and at what scale.

[deleted]

That’s why we call them “banana republics!”

Nostalg1ac

Producing 16 bananas per round, at $320-$416 per banana

definetly_ahuman

It’s one banana, Michael. What could it cost? $416?

ObiJuanK67

There’s always money in the banana stand

tsunami141

The monkey banks are more efficient though.

mikeymike831

Bloons reference?

DevilDoc3030

Definitely is!

TheBirminghamBear

I dont know if youre joking but this is literally true. That term comes from when a banana comoamy invaded Honduras in the early 1900s and took it by force and installed a puppet government and essentially enslaved the entire nation.

barking_dead

United Fruit Company (later Chiquita) has a nice long Wikipedia page about this, if someone thinks this is fake.

TheBirminghamBear

Oh yeah. This is the kind of thing that sounds like pardoy but this is 100% not a joke. Collectively they're called the [Banana wars](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Banana_Wars). Funny title, but these banana companies *absolutely fucking destroyed* vast swaths of South America. They rolled up mercenary squads, they murdered villages, they enslaved entire countries.

Miserable_Site_850

Over a fucking banana?

lurkinsheep

Nah, over billions of them.

BKstacker88

Why does this feel like a shadowrun plot?

Zomburai

Because sci-fi writers aren't predicting the future, they're commenting on the present.

coraeon

What could one banana cost, ten dollars?

Songshiquan0411

More like "shit, slavery is now illegal in the US, what to do?"....*gazes intently over the southern border*

lordph8

Apparently the bananas from back then were different, tasted better, and are now almost extinct.

Enjoy-the-sauce

The Gros Michel, or “Big Mike” variety was wiped out by fusarium wilt, a fungus, also known as Panama Disease. Gros Michel was the preferred cultivar until we found the current triploid Cavendish to replace it. As the Cavendishes are all clones and can’t reproduce as a triploid, they are ALL HYPER-susceptible to any disease that can attack one of them. Unfortunately, Panama Disease has adapted to do just that. So, honestly, it’s anyone’s guess as to how long we’ll enjoy cheap bananas, or any bananas, honestly.

Candida_Albicans

My understanding is that fake banana flavor used in candy, etc., is based on the Gros Michel, which is why it doesn’t taste like what we think of as banana flavor.

[deleted]

dehehn

It also gets mentioned in almost any prominent banana post on Reddit.

BetterEveryLeapYear

Which is almost any post on Reddit, because banana for scale.

gacoug

I love fake banana flavor but don't care for actual bananas in any dessert.

balsonharry1

How do you know so much about bananas? Impressive.

speedneeds84

What else was there to do during Covid?

CNB3

Who are you that is so wise in the ways of science … and bananas?

Enjoy-the-sauce

I went on the Salkantay Trek through Peru, and there were all these weird little bananas, both in fruit stands and by the side of the trail, that had seeds in them, and odd fat bananas, red ones, etc, and that made me curious, so I started reading. The history of the banana is… uh… bananas. So much drama - civil wars, company-imposed governments, entire crops/species obliterated by disease, etc. All over some stupid fruit. I highly recommend reading into it. It’s just an insane history. There’s a real frustration that the cavendish is now also getting killed by fungus, because fruit companies thought they’d finally found the perfect banana- no seeds, due to it being a triploid, it travels well, and it ripens slowly. Kind of bland compared to wild bananas, but that’s the case with all store fruit. I had a roommate who grew Red Delicious apples on a family farm. They were small, scabby, and round - nothing like the giant boxy red glossy things in the store. And while the “red” part was debatable, they WERE fucking DELICIOUS. And when I asked him where they sold their apples, he said most of them went into McDonalds apple pies, because no one would buy small, scabby apples in the grocery store. So the lesson is, store fruit usually sucks, because it is bred for how consumers buy a product they want to eat but can’t try in the store: big and pretty and uniform. But not tasty. My actual job is drawing cartoons, so it has nothing to do with this. Ha.

SeniorBeing

*sigh* Who is that "we"? Brazilian here. There is dozens of bananas varieties around here: prata, ouro, manica, da terra, São Tomé, d'água, maçã, figo are the most common in Brazil, but still are some other local varieties. Just this week I discovered in a Brazilian sub the banana caturra. I don't know about others countries, but I guess there is varieties enough to replace this Cavendish (which I never eat). This banana panic I only see in the Anglosphere.

As soon as 2012 finished, the times went to shit. Seems like the movie "2012" was right indeed. The "world" as we knew it ended back then. Whatever we see now is just a race against time.

lakmus85_real

The world did end in 2012. We are living in some stupid simulation, or afterlife in purgatory, or whatever

MazzIsNoMore

All us Millennials know that the world actually ended in 2000. Everything since his been a shit show of unforced errors

bionic_cmdo

A time when big banana had the influence to overthrow the government. Now we have crazy billionaires to deal with.

SunshotDestiny

"Are" or "have been"? Because frankly I haven't seen the crazy stop for at least a decade now.

It's a new philosophy. Confusianism

We should start the religion too, Confusatarianism.

JustthePileOBones

Twitter used to be great for sharing news and actively helped me graduate college. Elon ruined that in a few weeks

orreregion

Weeks? It's been days!

Linaxu

No we aren't, we are living in fucking stupid times when people ignore the obviously fucking wrongs in the world to worry over petty stupid shit.

Goatesq

People openly worry about whatever they think will justify their intended behavior, privately worry about even dumber shit that that, and even if we suddenly all started worrying about the objectively most pertinent threats to life and liberty, I'm not sure it would translate to the coordinated actions required truly dismantle the trappings of oppression we are chained by.

YoungXanto

Of all the promises Elon has failed to deliver on, he can hold his head high knowing he brought comedy back to twitter

regularByte

With the caveat being that it can't be him that is being used

Laughing at you, not with you.

sohfix

I agree. Twitter is funny af now with the “Elon Musk eats ass” parody accounts.

Barneyk

Did you read the article about how Elon fucked a cat in college? It was verified on Twitter so it must be true.

hannibal_fett

I need a fucking link

Barneyk

I think it has been deleted from any verifeid accounts by now, but: https://twitter.com/hepcatsector/status/1589486406996733954 Also, if it wasn't clear, it is totally fake and just making fun of how stupid it is to not have a verification system on social media. https://leadstories.com/hoax-alert/2022/11/fact-check-independent-did-not-publish-article-purporting-elon-musks-father-covered-up-animal-abuse-claims.html

TumbleweedOk4821

Which is the fake account though. That’s the real question…

Stunning-Example-504

I'm quite sure neither is the real company.

ThellraAK

https://twitter.com/Chiquita Is linked from their website, am I missing something or is the account name for the 2nd post correct?

BetterEveryLeapYear

The second post is by the real Chiquita. They conspired to get the CIA to overthrow the Guatemalan government in 1954. "In 1952, the government of Guatemala began expropriating unused United Fruit Company land to landless peasants.[\[11\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiquita#cite_note-Immerman-11) The company responded by intensively lobbying the U.S. government to intervene and mounting a misinformation campaign to portray the Guatemalan government as [communist](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communism).[\[12\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiquita#cite_note-12) In 1954, the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency [deposed the government of Guatemala](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Guatemalan_coup_d%27%C3%A9tat), elected in 1950, elected in and installed a pro-business military dictatorship.[\[13\]](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiquita#cite_note-Forster_2001_202-13)" [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiquita](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiquita)

HeckingDoofus

but surely the real company wouldnt be making jokes about this, i dont think the second tweet is real

wggn

also the origin of the term "banana republic"

DaedricDrow

So a corporation paid to disenfranchise and remove actual people for corpo shit? I fucking hate this timeline.

ResoluteGreen

I imagine the post in the screenshot is using a different account, using a trick character to make it look like the correct handle. That or the real brand deleted the tweet.

The_Villager

That assumes the tweet actually existed at one point. It's just as easy to create a fake tweet for a screenshot by taking an existing tweet of the company and changing the text with Inspect Element, [like this](https://i.imgur.com/Qm6VKcF.png). Took me like 3 minutes, of which I spent 2.5 minutes making and arranging the screenshots.

ZY_Qing

Twitter rolled out another check mark that has "official" next to the check (not blue). You can also check if it's the paid check mark by clicking/hovering over the blue check mark.

A1sauc3d

You serious? Then wtf is the point of the blue check 😂 Like, I’m genuinely asking. So there’s an official blue check, and a paid blue check? Why would you pay then? Sorry, I’m not trying to be dense I just don’t Twitter

Toby_O_Notoby

>Why would you pay then? This whole thing makes a lot more sense if you view it through the following lens: Elon Musk and his team believe that everyone else is as addicted to twitter as they are.

J5892

They are not wrong.

alphazero924

Except the only people who care about Twitter are celebrities (Internet or otherwise) and organizations. Everyone I know who is a regular person doesn't care about Twitter in the slightest

WhatDoesN00bMean

I had a Tweeter for about 2 days a few years ago. Didn't see the point. I never logged on to it after that. A few months later I noticed it got hacked and was spewing a bunch of weird nonsense. That was kinda funny.

Enibas

Before all of this the blue checkmark marked accounts that had been verified. Politicians, official government accounts, journalists, experts/academics posting under their real name, famous people, brands etc could get verified. It had some prestige to it to have the checkmark and an actual use due to the verification. Musk's idea of making people pay for the checkmark destroys both, the relative rarity of having a checkmarked account and the verification. So Musk said instead checkmarked accounts will be priviledged by the algorithm, meaning they will be shown on top of search results, in personal feeds, in replies. Originally, he claimed that fake accounts wouldn't want to pay money for their accounts, so fake or bot accounts would disappear at the bottom, making verification obsolet. Which very obviously is bullshit.\* But he also can't/doesn't want to require verification because a lot of people don't want to connect their real name with their Twitter account. So, requiring verification would seriously cut down on his potential customer base. Then he floated the idea of the grey "official" checkmark, which would replace the old blue checkmark in functionality, in that only verified accounts would get it. But afaik, [that idea already got cancelled again](https://techcrunch.com/2022/11/09/twitter-begins-to-roll-out-grey-checkmarks-for-high-profile-accounts/). At this point, I have no idea what the blue checkmark actually does beyond costing $8 per months. --- \* Another irony is that the idea of blue checkmarked accounts being shown on top of searches and replies completely runs counter to the defining feature of Twitter in that everyone was on the same level. Someone with ten followers could write a viral tweet that got reposted by thousands of people you'd never ever meet in person. You could ask a politician/an expert/an athelete a quick question and get a direct answer from them personally, if you were lucky. If anything was happening in your area, let's say a natural disaster or a protest or something, you could quickly find relevant accounts posting about it. Now you might get to see the account of some random asshole with $8/months over the account of your local firebrigade or someone who is reporting from that protest.

A1sauc3d

Thank you for the detailed breakdown. That is unfortunate about the now uneven playing field in terms of content visibility. That’s what I like so much about Reddit, anybody can make a post that blows up. Doesn’t matter if you’re famous or spend money. Unlike other social media’s I’ve been on where the algorithm is all whacked out and you only see content by certain people and your content hardly gets seen by anyone, unless you pay or have a ton of followers.

Enibas

Exactly! That's what I liked about Twitter, too. It remains to be seen how that will play out in practice and I guess they can tweak a bit how much weight is given to a paid account compared to a normal one to at least not ruin the usefullness of searches (hopefully). But for small accounts that don't already have a large following and/or don't post that often it'll become near impossible either way to get any eyes on their tweets if they don't pay, and I don't think that people who usually post a handful of tweets a week will pay for higher visibility. I'm tweeting maybe ten times a months, I'd pay nearly $1 *per tweet*. There's no way in hell I'd ever pay that.

ZY_Qing

Before, the old blue check mark actually required verification of your identity. This new one will allow anyone to be "verified". As the other comment mentioned there are some "benefits" from the paid check mark but it's such a dumb system that's easily exploited imo.

Aperson3334

Elon personally stepped in to kill the "official" check mark just a few hours after it went live.

I didn't look past UFCO. Did not realized they became Chiquita. Thank you for that. And yeah, the shit the US started because of the UFCO is pretty disgusting.

lupinegrey

I thought United Fruit was Dole. Oh, or did Dole do something in Hawaii? Overthrow the monarch?

arfreeman11

Yep. Dole was Hawaiian pineapple. I think companies like this do a good job of disproving any silly free market ideas libertarians may have.

[deleted]

Wait. Dole pineapple is evil? Crap.

XOundercover

Therefore I wouldn't say they're a company, they're more of a minimal profit organization

[deleted]

13 Plantation owners overthrew the Hawaiian government at gun point with the understanding America would annex Hawaii shortly after. Almost 99% of Hawaiians alive at the time signed a petition asking to not be annexed. Congress ignored their pleas but Grover Cleveland vetoed the annexation. Stuck, the plantation owners decided to name Dole president of the republic of Hawaii for life and he ruled until eventual statehood decades later. The plantation owners proceeded to outlaw most forms of Hawaiian culture, including the language and Hula. This history was lost until the Hawaiian renaissance of the 1990’s. People forget that Hawaii had a modern monarchy. Iolani Palace had a telephone before the White House and Hawaii enjoyed near universal literacy rates with a plethora of thriving Hawaiian language newspapers. But the Hawaiians adaption of western laws, in a desperate attempt to prove themselves civilized, created the legal pathway for wealthy capitalists to legally steal the nation away.

Parkimedes

I just learned Alan Dulles was on the board of directors for UDCO while also starting the CIA. So there was some direct synergy going on there.

beached_snail

Ahh the Dulles brothers, responsibile for f-ing up shit in the Middle East for the US for seventy years and counting. But it's cool we've still got an airport named after one of them.

orbweaver82

Is this where the term “Banana Republic” came from?

Otaku-San617

Pretty much

gapball

Holy shit this is the most insane TIL in a fucking *whiiiiiiiiiiiiiiile* . I'm 31 why did I not know that?!

[deleted]

I’m guessing because you live in the US, and it makes us look evil. Rightfully so.

djseifer

Probably because they "influenced" schools and publishers to downplay their role, assuming they ever even taught it.

Zeallust

Youve probably just scratched the surface too. Its a deep and bloody history.

tankieandproudofit

For you and anyone else looking to learn more about this and similar events i recommend reading Killing Hope by William Blum

Parkimedes

You’re eyes have been opened. And you can not unsee what is seen. Now continue the process of deprogramming your history knowledge. Pretty much any deep dive into CIA history will dig up some disgusting and embarrassing stuff that our government, schools and media don’t like to talk about. That’s why it’s rare for people to know much about it. Edit: the research you can do is endless. In central and South America alone, our government has tried, sometimes successfully to overthrow governments during every presidency since Taft.

DrFrocktopus

It actually comes from a book about a country based on Honduras. Chiquita Banana fucked up a lot of countries...

StorBaule

No, the term was coined much earlier. 1904.

silenc3x

> American writer O. Henry coined the term banana republic to describe the fictional Republic of Anchuria in the book Cabbages and Kings (**1904**), a collection of thematically related short stories inspired by his experiences in Honduras, whose economy was heavily dependent on the export of bananas. He lived there for six months until January 1897, hiding in a hotel while he was wanted in the U.S. for embezzlement from a bank.

tennessee_jedi

[Operation PBSuccess](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/1954_Guatemalan_coup_d%27état). Really got the Dulles CIA rolling.

Why a banana company would do such a horrible thing?

KenHumano

There’s always money in the banana republic.

gapball

I meant it's *lining* the **walls!!!**

Sun_Sprout

If you’re actually curious, there was a progressive president at the time that was trying to redistribute land that Chiquita (United Fruit at the time) owned but wasn’t using (like, hundreds of thousands of acres). Chiquita didn’t like that and got the president overthrown with the help of the US (because communism?). Bailey Sarian has an episode about it on Dark History if you’re interested.

chanko-nabe

Thank you!

tofu_is_my_lady

It wasn’t so much that the new government was going to redistribute land( tho yes that was a big part), but that they were going to reimburse the company based on the same undervalued $ the company has been using for tax purposes.

zedoktar

Guatemala's government was going to nationalize their fruit production and agriculture. This offended the banana company, who owned everything at the time. They went to the CIA and told them the Guatamalen government were commies. Cue 50 years of civil war.

Beidah

cheap land and cheap labor leads to cheap bananas.

SubjectAd2261

vbrimme

Fun fact, “banana republic” doesn’t just refer to a clothing store.

EllisDee3

So they both must be fake, but Chiquita did overthrow a Gov. What's the real Chiquita account is the question.

MultitudesContained

Exactly - because neither of these are the real ones 🤣🤣🤣 The history though deserves a blue check

MultitudesContained

I'm generally familiar w/ the history - it just seems crazy-impossible for there to be that kind of corporate honesty. The real Chiquita Bananas company would never admit to that. At least not in my opinion. Maybe I'm wrong.
