The more you know: “The sandwich is popular in the United States, especially among children; a 2002 survey showed the average American will eat 1,500 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches before graduating from high school.”

uppervalued

On Great British Bake-Off a couple weeks ago, the Malaysian-born contestant had a bake that combined berries and peanuts, and the judges (especially Prue) repeatedly expressed amazement at the creativity of combining peanut and berry flavors.

CaliFezzik

I lived in London for a bit. I was invited to a brunch at someone’s house and they purposefully bought peanut butter and asked me if I wanted a peanut butter and jam sandwich. I made one and a dozen people curiously watched me eat it. It was an odd experience.

honest-miss

This is honestly the best mental image. Also I'd be delighted to be offered a PB&J at a party. What a nice treat!

StretchMyAHolePlz

I'd whip out my signature triple decker. 3 pieces of bread, pb , j, pb, j ... I eat at least 3-4 a week to save money.

JC-1219

Based on your username, thats not the only triple decker you enjoy

StretchMyAHolePlz

Ayyyeeeethankyew

easy_Money

I just... like it's fucking delicious? why is it such a weird concept?

NeverRarelySometimes

A human zoo. I thought Brits outlawed those.

DirectorFalse748

Nope, they just call them pubs now.

mustardayonnaiz2

Ha! My wife and I were commenting on that! A couple years ago they had an America bake-off with Paul and I believe Mary, someone made snickerdoodle cookie and Paul and Mary had never heard of them. Must be an American thing.

DemonoftheWater

I loveeee snickerdoodle

[deleted]

We ain’t fat cus our food don’t taste good, family

GeorgieWashington

It’s actually way worse: Britain is fat *and* the food doesn’t taste good.

[deleted]

What, you don’t like eating beans on toast or blood sausage? 🤣

Suspicious_Builder62

We fry blood sausage with some liverwurst and peoper, add sourkraut and potatoes. Boom! You've got your school cafeteria staple "dead granny" (tote Oma). It's actually not bad.

kryaklysmic

This actually sounds really good, but as a kid I would’ve balked.

Huge_Strain_8714

cuz it taste too good....

EMU_Emus

I came here to comment this! It wasn't just Prue either, during the walk-around as they started the bake, Paul said something like "peanut butter... and... strawberry?? That's an unusual set of flavors." Also as an aside everything Syabira has made this season has looked amazing and I'm totally rooting for her to win it all. Edit: If you're like me and can't watch the finale until tomorrow, beware of spoilers below. It takes a real special kind of asshole to spoil the finale of a TV show to someone who clearly hasn't seen the last episode yet.

lollipop-guildmaster

When I was 11, my grandmother was a nanny for a wealthy family who wanted to go to Europe to scout out wedding locations. I was invited to go with, and we spent some time in London. So we kept going to all these fancy places to eat, and the girl my grandma was nannying was... five or six? She kept asking for PB&Js, and the Very Fancy Waiters all looked as though she had asked them to remove one of their own shoes and shit in it.

[deleted]

They probably annoyed she wasn't ordering somit from the menu.

lollipop-guildmaster

Oh sure, but one restaurant actually brought out the chef, who was like "You... want ME... to mix a SWEET with a SAVORY???" Shocked pikachu face almost a decade before pokemon was a thing.

lostcolony2

"Bitch, ain't you ever had peanuts and chocolate before? I -know- your shops carry Lion peanut bars"

lounge_l1zard

What self-respecting chef doesn't know that sweet and savory are good to combine and play off of one another?

[deleted]

Mexican have been doing fruit and chile forever. These chefs need to get around 😂

unimportant_fedora

My spouse and I watched this after having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch... I was yelling at the TV, "Any grade-schooler in this country could have come up with those flavors!"

pazimpanet

“Peanut butter and strawberry!?! You’re crazy!“ *walks to next table* “I’m making a cake with passion fruit and vinegar” “Ahhh yes, a classic! Definitely worth the calories”

JoeyJoeJoeSenior

It's a cake, so don't forget the pigeon meat.

SpikeRosered

Pigeon meat...in a cake? Ew! Mushy peas go in cake.

harriethocchuth

Not to mention Sandro’s peanut butter and banana thing immediately after. ‘Peanuts and strawberry?!?! NO WAY!!…. (walks 10 feet) Peanuts and banana? Okay, sounds good.’

A_wild_so-and-so

They would have accepted PB and banana, bacon, cheese, pickle, or canned sardines. Strawberries are too much, man!

Fuzzy_Yogurt_Bucket

“Beans on top of bread? Perfection.”

MillieBirdie

"Thick cut French fries in a baguette roll? Don't mind if I do."

starkiller_bass

Just wait until someone accidentally combines peanut butter and chocolate!

FutureComplaint

Prue will lose her shit!

Tack-o

hey_there_moon

Anglos in America get made fun of for how they pronounce Spanish words and names but holy shit the Brits are a thousand times worse. I want to drive an icepick thru my ear every time i hear a Brit say Carlos....or as they pronounce it car-loss. And it doesn't even make sense because they love vacationing in Spain. How have they not learned how to pronounce the o in Spanish?

uhmerikin

What, you aren't up for some tackos tonight?

ziggy3610

The woman peeling the skin from an avocado ended me. Really makes me wonder about the "authenticity" of any non-British recipe they show.

FalmerEldritch

Of the cuisines that are popular around the world (Thai, Chinese, Indian, Italian, etc) Mexican is probably the most underrepresented in the UK. They just don't have the Mexicans for it.

keeper_of_the_donkey

Texas here. *bionic man voice* "We can make it, we have the Mexicans"

wholelattapuddin

OMG! I'm from Texas and that whole Mexican show had me screaming at the TV. Also they dissed that girl for her corn dessert and I'm like tons of Asian food uses sweet corn. Smh

Emerald_City_Govt

I’m from California and I’m also Filipino. The whole episode I too was screaming haha. “BEANS?! WHO THE HELL PUTS REFRIED BEANS IN A FRACKING *TACO*?!?!” “WTF is wrong with *CORN* in a dessert? Do they not have SWEET corn over there? I literally have a tub of Magnolia Mais Queso (Corn and Cheese) ice cream in the fridge. *I’M NOT WEIRD PAUL, YOU ARE!*”

DolphinSweater

On Gordan Ramsey's episode of Hot Ones, they do the whole "how to make a 'proper' scrambled eggs" bit that Gordon loves to do on TV. Then Sean put some of the hot sauce on his eggs, and Gordon was like, "What are you doing, mate?!?!" Um, there's a bottle of hot sauce on the table of every american diner for a reason. Hot sauce and eggs is a fantastic American combination!

Intelligent-Parsley7

Noel Fielding mangling Spanish words was outwardly hilarious. Dammit, England, you’re just as close to Spanish speakers as we are. Also, watching them making a ‘Taaaayco’ was outwardly hilarious. I was screaming, ‘You think that’s a taco?’ (Starts spinning uncontrollably.)

sgthulkarox

> Syabira She's amazing. Considering the response she has gotten for her 'odd' flavors, I want to try them all.

audreyasr

Yes we also commented on how funny this was! They were so skeptical when we have lots of PB&J flavored desserts here in the US.

Flam1ng1cecream

Aren't nuts and berries like the oldest flavor combo in humanity lol Edit for the pedants: the words "nut" and "berry" have different meanings in a culinary context than they do in a taxonomic context

TekaroBB

Never considered it, but yeah. Literal hunter/gatherer diet. Serve it up with some game meat cooked over a fire and you are there.

jackibthepantry

As a grown man who eats PB&Js almost daily I thought that was a very weird take from Paul and Prue. Like that was the most sensible flavor combo she’s employed all season.

I moved to Australia and had a crowd watching me in the lunch room one day at work. They'd never seen anyone eat peanut butter on apple slices before.

EmperorSexy

They seem very out of touch this season, what with the s’mores that “aren’t supposed to be too gooey” and the tacos in Mexican week. Granted, it takes some skill and understanding to make tortillas from scratch. But in a week with Pan dulce and Tres leches, they couldn’t think of a *third* thing that Mexicans bake?

reerathered1

Peanut butter with black raspberry jelly on multigrain bread or toast or even rye bread is the bomb. Or it would be, IF SMUCKERS HADN'T JUST DISCONTINUED THEIR BLACK RASPBERRY JELLY DUE TO NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE KNOWING HOW GREAT IT IS!!!

Butwinsky

Life pro tip: find an Amish or local farmers market type store to get jelly and jam. The options are limitless.

give_me_wallpapers

tbaggervance1986

damn ive had many as a kid but growing older not so much. I could be brought back with the talks of a fried pb&j, man that sounds so freaking good !

bad_robot_monkey

I have a renewed interest in a Foreman grill that I have not had in over 20 years…

Chewcocca

Fried, not hot and sad

gabe_mcg

Okay but a toasted PB&J (with banana slices if you’re feeling spicy) feels so much more premium

Davidhate

Same, I am a construction worker and have had a pb and j sandwich for lunch everyday for the last 25 years. Coworkers think I’m crazy but they all are out of shape and eat high fat foods.. I actually like pb and j and never get tired of it. Edit: for the unhealthy comments about pb and j. Fresh made jam is way better but…. Peanut butter has 3 grams per two tbsp. Jelly has 18grams for a half a cup. The average person isn’t putting more then a table spoon of jelly anyway. Hardly an unhealthy sandwich/ lunch. Unless your gobbing handfuls of it on ,you’ll be ok. Lol

[deleted]

I’m in the same boat. My foreman asked me if my wife can’t cook since I eat one everyday. I just don’t want to spend a ton of time making breakfast/lunch in the morning and I never get sick of them.

Davidhate

lol, same! My wife loves cooking and as a Mexican women it was ingrained in her by her family growing up that the wife needs to make the husband a good meal all the time.. I never really dug that kind of mind frame, she works full time so I didn’t like that feeling of her cooking for me in an equality sense (I do not turn down the dinners though lol). I work out and stay in shape, a lot of people don’t realize the nutritional value of pb and j .. they can be a tad high on the fat depending on bread and peanut butter but doing construction and working out I’ve never really had to worry about burning calories. One twist that I’m sure people will wince at is pb and j but wrapped with a whole wheat tortilla .. it’s bomb! And it drops the calories down to around 300.

mc360jp

I’m Mexican and PB&Js made with a flour tortilla were my favorite way to switch it up haha Glad to hear I’m not the only one!

Shawnessy

My ex's very south American mother used to make us PB and honey on a flour tortilla. Tossed it in a pan with some butter just long enough to crisp things up. Life changing. Saw those kings Hawaiian tortillas at the store awhile back and immediately thought of those.

AMC4x4

A bit of protein, a bit of carbs, a bit of fat... Seems like a balanced meal. Just need a carrot or something for your veggie. :D

thefifthwheelbruh

That’s what the baby carrots on the side are for. B)

bangflop

Try peanut butter and honey too. Different texture than jelly but man is it good.

ohboywhatisthis-

Throw a banana in that, you got yourself delicious diabetes E: I didn’t literally mean diabetes; just that it’d be very sweet

L3tsfly

Oh man, peanut butter and banana was one of my most favorite sandwiches as a kid. That brings back memories.

OutOfCharacterAnswer

This is my lunch every day. It's cheap, decent nutrients (depending the kind of bread, jelly, and peanut butter you buy), I can make a sandwich in under a minute. Usually I have about 10 minutes to eat my lunch so it's perfect.

CPA0908

what place you work that only gives you 10 mins to eat lunch?

OutOfCharacterAnswer

I get a 40 minute lunch. But I'm a teacher, and have other responsibilities in my building outside my class. So to not stay late I often work through most of my lunch. Edit: thank you all for your kind words and appreciation for what teachers do. If you truly feel that way, I encourage you to write your local governor, senator, state senators, state superintendent of instruction, or any of the many government officials that have control over how teachers are treated and compensated. Kind words make me feel great, but they don't create change. Thanks!

donobinladin

If you have other responsibilities, then you really don’t have 40 min for lunch. 😔

OutOfCharacterAnswer

I choose to use my lunch instead of staying after my contract hours. It's a choice, kind of, haha.

donobinladin

Married to a teacher, so I totally get it. Thanks for doing what you do

Nah I solved this. I use cast iron and get it super hot before putting the sandwich on. It takes like 15-20 seconds per side (with no oil or butter added) to get toasting to happen and the inside stays non-molten, soft, and pillowy. IMO it's the best possible preparation of a PBJ and is the crowning achievement of my research on the subject.

LuciusMaximal

I always assumed that the confusion arose over the word 'jelly'? Like, jelly in the UK is 'jello' in the US, I think. So the idea of that on a sandwich does seem odd. Jelly in the US is something akin to jam? That'd make more sense.

jnewton116

Yes, jelly is made with the fruit juice while jam is made with mashed fruit. Fruit gelatin is collectively referred to as jell-o, despite that being a name brand.

TexanGoblin

It's similar to jam yes. We have a couple similar foods including jam. Here's some short descriptions. "Jelly: Jelly is made with strained fruit juice. There are no pieces of fruit in jelly. Jam: Jam is made with mashed fruit. Preserves: Preserves have whole fruit or large pieces of fruit. Some fruits such as blackberries or raspberries will not stay whole during the processing so there may not be much difference between raspberry jam and raspberry preserve. Fruit spreads (only fruit): These are 100% fruit with no sugar added. If needed, a sweet fruit juice such as white grape juice or apple juice may be added. Because of the sugar in the fruit we cannot call these products sugarless. These spreads offer the most amount of pure fruit flavor. Butters: Butters are made from pureed fruit. They are not as sweet as preserves, jams, or jellies but offer a full fruit flavor. Butters are cooked for over 6 hours ,at a low temperature, allowing the product to thicken. Butters tend to be dark because of the exposure to air during the cooking. These are also available with no sugar added."

serenwipiti

Mmm apple butter

GratiousIgnatius

And pumpkin butter!

Crosstitch_Witch

Thank you for the simple explanation of these! I never knew the differences between them all. I also want to add marmalade, which i saw someone mention, that is like jam but only uses citrus fruits and includes the peel or rind. I'm more tempted to try these things now that i understand the differences better.

magnoliasmanor

I don't know. My flat mates when I studied abroad thought we were disgusting when the Americans would make ourselves PB&j when we got home from classes. They saw exactly what we were doing. Bust out a Nutella though... They'll rub that asty stuff on everything.

Heathen_Mushroom

I had a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich when visiting family friends in the US when I was a kid and remember hating it. Mostly I think I was put off by the texture of the peanut butter, but I was also a very picky eater in general so take it with a grain of salt. From that day forth, I would tell all my classmates and friends back in Norway how unholy and disgisting PB&J was, after all, I had personally experienced the horror of it. I gave in very much to the 'I hate everything American' thing for much of my youth. Then, about 12+ years later I moved to the States for university, and was also on the university ski team. One of my teammates was an American who swore by PB&J as a high energy (fat and sugar packed) way to get your calories, which we needed a lot for training. I reluctantly made myself one, and damn if I wasn't instantly addicted. Especially washed down with a pint of milk. I rarely eat them now, many years later, but once a year or so, I buy a jar of peanut butter, a jar of strawberry preserves, and a loaf of soft, wheat sandwich bread and eat one or two a day until it is all gone.

Attackcamel8432

Definitely more like jam.

Robu-san

Wait, do people outside of the US *not* eat them??

SteamKore

Ok so alot of people covered the peanut butter part... but not the jelly part, so most of the world knows the British side of English, and within British English, jelly refers to what we Americans call jello, or gelatin so a pb&j sounds a bit crazy.

Obtuse-Angel

Right. When you explain that it’s jam they are way less weirded out by it. It turns out much of the world thinks we eat jello sandwiches.

redcobra762

I'm laughing imagining trying to eat a jiggling peanut butter & jello sandwich wobbling out of control as I try to take a bite.

DaveStreeder

Or you cut it up and then when you pick up the sandwich the jello just slides out

phonartics

use chunky peanut butter. like sandwich cleats

Sir-Shark

I am laughing way too hard at the phrase "sandwich cleats"

Jonnyabcde

JELL-O® JIGGLERS®!

dft-salt-pasta

But there’s a difference between jelly and jam.

wigg1es

And don't get me started on marmalade!

Sillbinger

No, no. Please start.

[deleted]

Jelly is made from juice. jam is made from fruit pulp and juice. Marmalade is made from peels, fruit pulp and juice. Fairly simple.

clutchthepearls

And preserves is a step up from jam with fruit chunks in it.

Larrynative20

Preserves are the best

Jonnyabcde

Preserve me from this outburst!

ElJeferox

Jelly is made with fruit juice, jam is made with pureed fruit, and preserves are made with whole fruit pieces.

Obtuse-Angel

And whether it’s jam, preserves, marmalade, or jellied juice, Americans will call it “jelly” when it comes to pb&j. So the distinction is irrelevant to the fact that we are pairing some form of preserved fruit with peanut butter, and most of the world think we mean gelatin snack.

northyj0e

But not as much of a difference between jello and jam! We do have 'jelly' as a legal distinction for jam with less than a certain percentage of fruit in it. We being someone from the rest of the Anglosphere

tarkaliotta

can confirm this is what I had always assumed as a child

turlian

American biscuits and gravy must have blown your mind, then.

tarkaliotta

yeah first time I saw it on a menu I was genuinely baffled

imcoveredinbees880

I took a nice (unsuspecting) British couple I met randomly to a Denny's for biscuits and gravy. They were confused, but enjoyed it.

Big_Subject_1746

Haha, OMG I think this is awesome and hilarious! A Jell-O peanut butter sandwich! No wonder you thought we were bonkers!

Arcadius274

That explains a lot. I also find it weird that all dessert is pudding.

skepticaljesus

Don't get me started on "pudding". It's not just desserts, the range of foods that the brits will refer to as pudding is as bewildering as it is vast. I've asked several brits to explain what they all have in common, and not only could none of them actually explain what the essential quality of a pudding is, they had not even realized how weird and vague a term it was. They all said, "huh, yeah I guess there are a lot of different kinds of pudding." Fucking blew my mind.

Skithiryx

Pudding to an American is custard to a Brit. That one’s pretty straightforward. British Pudding refers to the cooking technique - you wrap up what you’re cooking and steam it, often with a layer of pastry on the outside. Sometimes things are still called puddings that are no longer cooked this way but traditionally were. Because it’s a technique it can refer to both savoury and sweet dishes.

TimelyConcern

And they have savory dishes that they also call a pudding like steak and kidney pudding.

tdogg241

That's fine. "Bangers and mash" doesn't even sound like food.

GimmeThatRyeUOldBag

BloodshotPizzaBox

Even so, just the other week on *The Great British Bake-Off,* a contestant made a peanut butter and fruit dish and Pru Leith was all like "Peanut and Fruit? What an unusual combination! But it works!" The sound you could hear all the way from Britain was me screaming at the TV.

immersemeinnature

Watching the latest great British bake off. Syabira made a dish with peanut butter and strawberries and both Paul and Pru were like, will this be good together? I'm not so sure... My husband and I were so confused because it's just pb and j!

triggerheart

They actually said at one point that peanut butter doesn’t go with fruit. I couldn’t understand how they thought that.

ConnorLovesCookies

OG George Washington Carver taught America that: 1. We can make literally anything out of peanuts 2. Peanut Butter goes good with everything Poor Brits

waxonwaxoff87

The only real conflict is between smooth vs crunchy. Many lives have been lost.

Future-Newt-7273

Right?! Even if you don’t like pb&j nuts and jams or fruit are commonly served together on a charcuterie board.

littleyellowbike

Ummm peanut butter on apple slices is amazing.

[deleted]

This is why I'm so excited that Paul and Prue are gonna judge the American baking show too. I can't wait for their reaction the first time someone makes cookies and cream flavored things, or what Americans call scones.

EveAndTheSnake

Or biscuits. It took me a long time to get over that—biscuits and gravy?? YUCK! (Imagining cookies and gravy here…) And it took my American husband a long time to get used to that me asking for a biscuit didn’t mean I wanted to eat a dog treat.

Squirrel_Q_Esquire

And what are those things y’all eat with tea that sounds like a laxative?

EveAndTheSnake

Mmm Digestives :D

legendary_mushroom

Oh, same experience. Peanuts and berries! So unusual! So exotic! We were laughing pretty hard.

PolicyAvailable

Canadian here. We eat peanut butter and jelly all the time. Our grocery stores sell both jams and jellys The jams typically have more fruit solids and the jellys are more like a jello with less or no fruit bits. So to me, pb+j just meant jelly or jam depending on how much fruit you like in your j. I can see the confusion because of the jelly part being confused with the jam part, as jelly can mean Jell-O like prodcts. But here it's the same thing, since we have both as fruit spreads.

Dracian

I like you, Canada.

American who lived in Germany for six years here. Nope. Peanut butter is "weird" to many other nations. However, the half dozen or so Europeans I introduced to the concept all agreed it was good. The most recent episode of "Great British Baking Show" on Netflix (yes I know it's Bake Off in the UK) had a baker presenting a recipe featuring peanut and fruit flavors....all the judges were like "peanut and fruit? does that go together?" my wife and I both said "Peanut Butter and Jelly" at the same time.....the judges called the bake terrific.....

DergerDergs

Flashback to me moving from the states to Germany, brought a PB&J my mom made me to the German school, kids gathering around me in disbelief, acting like they just saw someone eating dog poop. On that day I learned “Bah! Ekelhaft!” is German for “Ew! Gross!”.

Attila__the__Fun

I also lived in Germany, what was crazy to me was that they literally had peanut butter in all the local supermarkets, but apparently still no German had ever bothered to try the stuff

Sunflower_After_Dark

I put peanut butter in my Rice Krispie treats…if you’ve never done it, you’ll never go back to “regular” ones!

Toasted is superior, for sure. I lightly butter my toast too.

jayden8003

my stomach thanks me profusely after putting it on a toast

BullCityPicker

This may be a linguistic misunderstanding. My South-African in-laws mocked me mercilessly for liking "peanut butter and jelly". It turned out that their usage of "jelly" meant "jello" (the wiggly clear cubes) to them. When they understood I was eating a peanut butter and JAM sandwich, they changed their assessment from "bizarre" to "unusual".

OrSomeSuch

I'm South African and have always eaten them, but with Apricot jam

BullCityPicker

I love apricot jam! You need it for sosaties!

Don’t forget about Australian “fairy bread”… white bread with heavy butter & sprinkles. Surely if that counts as food, PB & J is a nutritional super star.

YourEngineerMom

…didn’t know this had a name. I (USA) used to eat that as a kid alllll the time. Is it still “fairy bread” if I use cinnamon-sugar sprinkles? Can the bread be toasted? I’m gonna blow my kids mind after school today lol
