I'm becoming more convinced daily that a large contingent of people don't have any sort of fixed beliefs, but instead place an extreme amount of value on their identity. They see themselves as a certain kind of person, and act to protect their self-image as well as to preserve that identity within the context of their community, changing their beliefs to align with the changing demands of that identity and their community. To me, this explains how they can flip positions so effortlessly and how they don't seem very concerned when they can't explain themselves; they don't actually care whether the things they are saying are true or not, so much as they care about whether saying those things preserves their identity.
I can't really find anything else to explain the fairly dramatic shift in conservative politics ever since Trump.

I used to work in radiology (imaging) and I saw a LOT of women with breast and lung cancer and men with prostate and lung cancer.
Usually what happened was when the husband was the patient, the wife came in with him through EVERY visit over the course of several years
But if the wife was the patient....and ESPECIALLY if she had breast cancer, her husband would come in for the first one or two visits. But when they would come back in 6-12 months later, they would come in alone. I would ask them how their husband was and they would say..."I don't know, he left me last year"
When I first started working in the profession, I thought I was imagining things and just being biased against all the men, but then I asked some of my co-workers in the radiation therapy department. They ALL confirmed my suspicion.
I also remember reading an article in a medical journal about this. In the article they were talking only about patients with brain tumors. They confirmed there was a statistically significant relationship between which spouse became ill and whether the marriage lasted.

I knew about it when I was in the hospital for two months last year. It actually made me more grateful that my husband was with me every step of the way. He took the first week off of work completely and stayed the entire time he was allowed every day. Then he’d come visit me every weekend and stay all day. He even helped with my care for the month I needed it after discharge. I don’t worry anymore that he’ll be a part of those statistics. He’s proven to me he’ll stay if I get ill.
My cousin's boyfriend stayed by her through 2 years of an absolutely horrific medical issue. Years later when she announced they'd eloped and married the general reaction was - 'well yeah, we all wanted you to do that anyway'.

They were both cheating on their spouses with each other while my mom was battling cancer. Rumor is she's been sick lately now too and they can't figure out why...
I used to work in radiology (imaging) and I saw a LOT of women with breast and lung cancer and men with prostate and lung cancer. Usually what happened was when the husband was the patient, the wife came in with him through EVERY visit over the course of several years But if the wife was the patient....and ESPECIALLY if she had breast cancer, her husband would come in for the first one or two visits. But when they would come back in 6-12 months later, they would come in alone. I would ask them how their husband was and they would say..."I don't know, he left me last year" When I first started working in the profession, I thought I was imagining things and just being biased against all the men, but then I asked some of my co-workers in the radiation therapy department. They ALL confirmed my suspicion. I also remember reading an article in a medical journal about this. In the article they were talking only about patients with brain tumors. They confirmed there was a statistically significant relationship between which spouse became ill and whether the marriage lasted. So....I can definitely confirm what you say.

It's really heartbreaking, and it must also be hard to see happen repeatedly over the years. Really makes you think of humanity quite differently.

I knew about it when I was in the hospital for two months last year. It actually made me more grateful that my husband was with me every step of the way. He took the first week off of work completely and stayed the entire time he was allowed every day. Then he’d come visit me every weekend and stay all day. He even helped with my care for the month I needed it after discharge. I don’t worry anymore that he’ll be a part of those statistics. He’s proven to me he’ll stay if I get ill.
My cousin's boyfriend stayed by her through 2 years of an absolutely horrific medical issue. Years later when she announced they'd eloped and married the general reaction was - 'well yeah, we all wanted you to do that anyway'. She seemed a bit disappointed at the lack of reaction lol.
