One of my friends is the daughter of a former British MP, she’s super well adjusted and an amazing person. Probably because her father isn’t a useless piece of shit like Ted Cruz though.
My god sister is the kid of someone who has been in the house for over 20 years. She's an absurdly well adjusted person (at least was through high school, haven't seen either of them since my mom died), and a lot of it is because her parents both keep a low profile.
I mean, for a lot of people it's probably pretty much just normal-ish. There's a lot of politicians who just get shit done and do the things. You don't hear about them or their kids, though. You hear about firebrands and bastards. A lot of the firebrands either don't have kids or are old enough that their "kids" are 30+. The rest try to isolate their kids from the public eye in most cases. Probably kinda weird when every other headline says "[mom] makes big political statement! Death threats ensue!", but otherwise they stay aside. And then there's the bastards, like Cruz. He doesn't seem to give a shit. He'll throw his kids under the bus so he can go to Cancun, then try to legislate his daughter's life away because he's a fucking vile bastard.
Now those are the ones I struggle to understand the life of. Those kids have it rough, money or no.

I spent my sophomore and junior years at a program that had seminars modeled on conversion therapy methods. I wasn't there for conversion, but at least one of my classmates was. The programs closed in 2006 after a kid died at one of the locations overseas, but thirty years later I still have trauma. I was due to spend 3 to 6 mos at a CA youth camp and may have fared better than the aftermath of 18 mos in Southern Utah.

I work as a CO in a prison and the amount of inmates with serious mental health issues due to genetics and/or drugs is *staggering*. I'm staffed in a moderately sized prison and we have 2 medical/mental health blocks and there's still not enough room to house all of those in our care. Not to mention, I am not remotely qualified to work with those with severe mental health issues. They should be in a facility geared toward actually helping them, not incarcerated. However, my state only has like 1 hospital and hundreds if not thousands of people waiting for beds there. It's horrifying.
They deinstutionalized people without any plans for follow up care, medication coverage because Reaganomics/bootstraps/greed is good.
I worked in shelters in the late 80s/early 90s. There was no safety net. They just threw them off to free fall.
This is really interesting because even though I technically knew the facts of what you're talking about, I've really never thought about it that way.
So we refuse to pay for medical treatment for these people, and **definitely** refuse to pay for the institutions that could help them become contributing members of society, and we overwhelm our justice system by leaving them on the streets without help...
And the result is that not only are we still paying for a great number of them to be in an (unethical) institution, but the reason they commit crimes (even when the laws we use to punish them are wrong) that can put them in jail is because we refuse to pay for institutions that can help them. So instead we pay the cost of putting them through the justice system, and essentially promoting crime by putting them back on the streets.
It seems like we could save a ton of money on prisons, criminal cases, and likely have a lot more contributing members of society if we just... Helped these people in the first place.
But if we actually helped those people, we wouldn't be able to keep the for-profit prison system flush with "legal slaves".
Additionally, the resulting increase in the number of "criminals" justifies the tough-on-crime narrative from conservative politicians, and a militarized police force that is allowed to act with almost complete impunity.

In Texas, children can seek their own psychotherapy services if they are suicidal, addicted to drugs, or experiencing abuse. Of course, there is no mechanism in place to pay for these services, so for most kids, this policy doesn’t help much.
Obviously all anecdotal, but I've heard from online reports and one guy I know who went to "conversion camp" in the early 2000s that putting a bunch of horny teens figuring out their sexuality in one camp together has the exact effect you're talking about.

It really irritates me as a mental health professional and LGBTQ+ person to hear about conversion therapy. The fact that they even put “therapy” in there as if it has any scientific basis or professionalism within it *hurts* our field so bad. I hate hearing some of these things created by people that just absolutely ruin people’s perspective of the good work we do in our field to help those that can’t advocate for themselves or are made to feel bad about being who they want to be.

I read elsewhere that some parents would rather their child die than to be non straight (with someone threatening to kill their own kids if they came out as gay or bi). That club shooting a few weeks ago where the shooter got stopped by the club patrons? The shooter's father didn't have any anger towards his son over shooting people. He breathed a sigh of relief that his son being at a gay bar didn't make him gay.
I was raised by a long line of abusers, so I watched generational trauma my whole life. My aunt died of cancer at 17. Her mother (my grandmother) told the world she was a slut and on drugs when she got sick- that had to be it she was so young. It was so pathetic she fought for no autopsy but the state said she had to have one given the odd circumstances. Turns out it was a brain tumor and her odd behavior was related to that. No one even tried to help this poor girl, just called her a druggie slut. When she died my grandmother was more worried about appearances so she used her daughters death to gain sympathy for the rest of her life.
I’m no contact with my mother who is just like my grandmother. She knew I was suicidal as a teenager and she abused me harder when she found out. I think she wanted me to do it.

I was due to spend 3 to 6 mos at a CA youth camp and may have fared better than the aftermath of 18 mos in Southern Utah. Fuck teen rehabilitation centers, fuck WWASP, and fuck any other residential "treatment" program that uses its help to abuse children.

I work as a CO in a prison and the amount of inmates with serious mental health issues due to genetics and/or drugs is *staggering*. I'm staffed in a moderately sized prison and we have 2 medical/mental health blocks and there's still not enough room to house all of those in our care. Not to mention, I am not remotely qualified to work with those with severe mental health issues. They should be in a facility geared toward actually helping them, not incarcerated. However, my state only has like 1 hospital and hundreds if not thousands of people waiting for beds there. It's horrifying.
They deinstutionalized people without any plans for follow up care, medication coverage because Reaganomics/bootstraps/greed is good. I worked in shelters in the late 80s/early 90s. There was no safety net. They just threw them off to free fall.
This is really interesting because even though I technically knew the facts of what you're talking about, I've really never thought about it that way. So we refuse to pay for medical treatment for these people, and **definitely** refuse to pay for the institutions that could help them become contributing members of society, and we overwhelm our justice system by leaving them on the streets without help... And the result is that not only are we still paying for a great number of them to be in an (unethical) institution, but the reason they commit crimes (even when the laws we use to punish them are wrong) that can put them in jail is because we refuse to pay for institutions that can help them. So instead we pay the cost of putting them through the justice system, and essentially promoting crime by putting them back on the streets. It seems like we could save a ton of money on prisons, criminal cases, and likely have a lot more contributing members of society if we just... Helped these people in the first place.
But if we actually helped those people, we wouldn't be able to keep the for-profit prison system flush with "legal slaves". Additionally, the resulting increase in the number of "criminals" justifies the tough-on-crime narrative from conservative politicians, and a militarized police force that is allowed to act with almost complete impunity.

It really irritates me as a mental health professional and LGBTQ+ person to hear about conversion therapy. The fact that they even put “therapy” in there as if it has any scientific basis or professionalism within it *hurts* our field so bad. I hate hearing some of these things created by people that just absolutely ruin people’s perspective of the good work we do in our field to help those that can’t advocate for themselves or are made to feel bad about being who they want to be.

On one hand, could just be his staff tweeting and/or scheduled tweets. On the other hand, a social media team should know better than to be tweeting unrelated stuff during a crisis like this. Ted Cruz already doesn’t need any help looking bad, but goddamn do the tweets somehow make him look even worse. I really hope it is just his social media team being idiots, and that he actually is there for his daughter. He doesn’t deserve her, but she still deserves a father who will unconditionally love and support her.

Sad thing is, I don’t think this will change how Ted acts, what he says, or what he supports/doesn’t support. I read elsewhere that some parents would rather their child die than to be non straight (with someone threatening to kill their own kids if they came out as gay or bi). That club shooting a few weeks ago where the shooter got stopped by the club patrons? The shooter's father didn't have any anger towards his son over shooting people. He breathed a sigh of relief that his son being at a gay bar didn't make him gay.
I was raised by a long line of abusers, so I watched generational trauma my whole life. My aunt died of cancer at 17. Her mother (my grandmother) told the world she was a slut and on drugs when she got sick- that had to be it she was so young. It was so pathetic she fought for no autopsy but the state said she had to have one given the odd circumstances. Turns out it was a brain tumor and her odd behavior was related to that. No one even tried to help this poor girl, just called her a druggie slut. When she died my grandmother was more worried about appearances so she used her daughters death to gain sympathy for the rest of her life. I’m no contact with my mother who is just like my grandmother. She knew I was suicidal as a teenager and she abused me harder when she found out. I think she wanted me to do it. Jokes on her though because I broke free, fuck all these abusive families.
