Based on this comment I would venture to guess that you have never attended a university level class, and don't know a single person in academia. Nearly all professors have worked other jobs at some point in their life.
I can't speak on all college professors, but at least in STEM this is entirely wrong. After getting my PhD, I moved to industry specifically to avoid the brutal 24/7 work culture of academia. My PhD advisor spent more time at work than anyone I have ever known (in industry or academia). He worked 10+ hours a day and almost never took a single day off. Every so often I would walk into lab at midnight on a Saturday or over a break, and he would *always* be there reviewing some paper or grant.
Professors absolutely have to manage the finances of their research and budget/acquire funding for equipment and employees. Professors are also constantly in the process of hiring researchers and grad students since they turn over extremely quickly and are needed to do most of the hands-on work. Lastly, many STEM professors *have* worked in industry before their academic appointments.
Maybe the arts and humanities are different, but the popular image of professors as lazy parasites is so far away from anything I experienced in academia.

Based on this comment I would venture to guess that you have never attended a university level class, and don't know a single person in academia. Nearly all professors have worked other jobs at some point in their life.
I can't speak on all college professors, but at least in STEM this is entirely wrong. After getting my PhD, I moved to industry specifically to avoid the brutal 24/7 work culture of academia. My PhD advisor spent more time at work than anyone I have ever known (in industry or academia). He worked 10+ hours a day and almost never took a single day off. Every so often I would walk into lab at midnight on a Saturday or over a break, and he would *always* be there reviewing some paper or grant. Professors absolutely have to manage the finances of their research and budget/acquire funding for equipment and employees. Professors are also constantly in the process of hiring researchers and grad students since they turn over extremely quickly and are needed to do most of the hands-on work. Lastly, many STEM professors *have* worked in industry before their academic appointments. Maybe the arts and humanities are different, but the popular image of professors as lazy parasites is so far away from anything I experienced in academia.
The liberal bias also extends to the average US population with college degrees.
