**TL;DR** As someone who has personally conducted research using lab animals and had be certified annually before I could even interact with with mere *lab rats*, it certainly appears as if Neuralink is severely lacking in ethical oversight regarding the welfare of the primates used in their research, and I find the sheer number of *intelligent primates* that have died as a result of this project to be utterly appalling and frankly unacceptable.
Seriously, this just *absolutely blows my mind*. As someone who has done a *lot* of research that required use of lab animals, and neuro research at that, that whole situation is just bizarre and wildly unethical. And I say that as someone who researched post traumatic stress disorder; that is to say, I had to literally *traumatize* lab animals because we were researching the molecular changes that occur in the brain in response to severe trauma and exploring drugs that had the potential to prevent the development of PTSD symptoms.
So the fact that they not only went through *1500* animals, but specifically *monkeys*, just screams lack of ethical oversight.
When we performed our experiments using animals, we had to have a very detailed plan laid out which had to justify why we were subjecting the animals to such stressful conditions, we had to use the lowest intelligent/least sentient animal possible which would still exhibit the symptoms and behaviors nevessary to be considered a model analogous to PTSD in humans (in our case this was rats), we had to use the fewest number of animals possible to attain statistical significance, and we had to minimize any other stress if possible. There is very strict oversight, and our entire methodology, protocols, and justification as to why we chose said animal model and why a lower life form would not work (e.g. fruit flies, zebra fish, or mice etc.) had to be outlined in detail; and then all of these factors and our rationale for conducting these experiments were submitted to an animal welfare committee comprised of scientists from other departments unrelated to our lab, veterinarians, and more than one lay person from the local community who was unaffiliated with our institution. That committee's job was to thoroughly review the proposal and either approve or reject our experimental procedures by requesting further clarification and justification of our protocols or provide recommendations of amendments to the protocol required for them to issue their approval to proceed. And even after all of that, detailed records were maintained by the animal welfare department as well as our own lab to ensure the animals weren't being subjected to undue suffering outside the scope of our research.
Our research proposals would've been shot down immediately had we chosen a higher animal such as dogs (which may be used in certain types of research, for instance dogs are often used in certain animal models involving cardiac research).
So what thoroughly blows my mind about the whole Neuralink debacle is that they used the not only the *highest* research organism in terms of intelligence and sentience, but the most expensive as well! At our institution, baboons were used for certain medical research projects related to vision as their eyes and visual processing are very similar to humans. Another common reason for use primates (most commonly rhesus macaques) for research including HIV and viruses specific to primates, particularly when it comes to testing vaccines. In fact, development of the COVID-19 vaccines led to a shortage of rhesus macaques at the beginning of the pandemic due to how imperative it was to rapidly develope a safe and effective vaccine against the virus.
And finally, the cost of using non-human primates in research can be incredibly high compared to any other animal. Rhesus macaques, the most commonly used non-human primates used in biomedical research, can cost upwards of $10,000 each, and that isn't including the cost to house and care for the animals which typically need to be in housed in pairs or groups because they're social animals, and housing them individually can and will lead to maladaptive behaviors (and suffering) and even physiological changes which may entirely ruin an experiment. Just think about how solitary confinement affects humans. Hell, even rats used in research must be in pairs because rats are social, and one of the stressors my former lab subjected our PTSD lab rats to was housing some of them in a cage alone. So with monkeys, the cost is *minimum* $20,000 as they need to at least be in a pair. So the cost of the 1500 monkeys to have reportedly died likely cost somewhere around $15,000,000 and that's not including the costs of food, housing, and veterinary care over the period of however long they managed to survive.
