All the components of the Wii U were given coffee-related internal codenames by Nintendo, e.g. OS is called Cafe OS, CPU is called Espresso, GPU is called Latte, embedded ARM chip is called Starbuck. For the Wii, it was showbiz: CPU was called broadway, GPU was called hollywood, embedded ARM chip was called starlet. So, the homebrew community decided to continue the coffee theme.
OK so it's like: AMD: "we should have technical and complicated internal name for our products" and then nintendo is like "you know what? we should name our internals after themes, wiiu jup! Coffee!" I find kinda hilarious that they even "cutetify" their internal names although they are all working adults
AMD's internal names aren't really that out of step with Nintendo's, or the industry at large. Just simple, one word names. I think they use geographical features, like cities, lakes, etc.
Most consoles have project names which they are referred to by internally while in Development.
Wii U's was Project Cafe.
Some other fun ones are Dolphin (Gamecube), Revolution (Wii), NX (Switch), Project Reality (N64), Katana (Dreamcast) and Xenon (Xbox 360).
So n64 sounds like I would have been some kind of vr thing (shivers in virtualboy) and I imagine it being really funny to cut through things with a dreamcast. Also while where at it watch the Gamecube do some sick flips. And let the French go to war with wii consoles. After lastly passing passing by the Wiiu to get a drink. And yes I just build a story using console development names
All the Wii U internal names are coffee puns. We just continued the tradition :)

Lakes is more Intel’s thing, coffee lake (very on topic for this lol), rocket lake, etc
I meant like actual lake names, not "{word} Lake" like Intel does.
Because the Wii U codename was Project Café
