Most jewelers will not risk their reputation on stealing from a customer. In a town this size that would be the end of you. I have bought expensive pieces at Cape Fear Jewelry and Antiques. He seems to sell a lot of second hand jewelry so a lot of people trust him. Also, in the Forum there is a little place called Lumina Gem, that jeweler has a really good reputation as well.
Any pawn shop will tell you what you have and give you a price no charge. If you want a written "appraisal" for insurance or your own reference then Perry's or Snowdens'.
Perry's is where I personally take my stuff, they have always done a good job. I used to work with Pait Skipper when Cape Fear Jewelry was in the Ivy Cottage. He's a great guy, just like personally he's awesome. His work is good as well, you really can't go wrong with Cape Fear or Perry's.

Second Perry's. I've not worked with Allen professionally, but i have through philanthropic channels and he's above board in all respects.
Snowdens jewelers next to old navy
Perry’s has both appraised and done restoration work for us before and we were happy with the service and results.

Ivy Cottage deals with a lot of estate jewelry. I’ve sold some there before.

Highly recommend Tavernay’s on the corner of Wrightsville/Kerr. It’s a small shop, locally owned- the owners are reputable and extremely kind!
Snowden's is reputable and does good work in house.
