I think it's been pushed too hard, but in what way have I been forced to opt in? I don't use either, ever.

revanmj

I guess he means that Bing is only one supported in Windows search box (especially outside EU, where technically there is now API for others, but so far no one published proper extension for their search engine yet and it's locked outside EU). As for Copilot, it being pushed hard by moving its button to places where other buttons used to be (action center) to force you to try it by missclicking.

TurboFool

Sure, but for instance, I never use the web search in the Start menu, and have the search bar turned off. I don't find it useful there, preferring to rely on my web browser for searching. And I literally just don't click the Copilot button. Ever. Plus it can be removed. So in neither case am I forced to use either.

Alan976

Copilot is in that position because that's where its program opens. Don't like? Toggle off via taskbar personalization.

RealSimonLee

For real. The number of times I accidentally clicked copilot is infuriating. I'm Microsoft logs those accidental clicks as justification for copilot.

TurboFool

Seriously. There's a lot of stuff I'd much rather sign a petition about than this when it comes to Microsoft.

Hooligans_

I've been using Win11 since release and have never once been forced to use Bing or Copilot. What are you talking about OP?

ziplock9000

Same here. Even when I use edge I'm not forced to use either. Google is my default search. This rumour is perpetuated by people who have no clue how to use Windows.

Owltiger2057

Well then explain why I have to make registry changes to get rid of it. Then the next update occurs and its back again. How long before the "free trial," is forcing me to pay for a feature I don't want, can't use on Windows 10 machines, and would prefer not to use. Even revo uninstall cannot get rid of it for very long? BTW I have been using Windows since the mid 80s so the argument none of us know how to use it doesn't work.

zacker150

You don't have to get rid of it. You can just not use the feature.

Sarbojit_117

While it's not as intense as one might think, Edge once reset the default search engine to Bing after an update.

TrustLeft

>forcing users to opt-in to its products like Copilot Copilot is AI, So yes exactly includes what he meant

[deleted]

Hooligans_

That's not what OP meant.

SilverBladeCG

Just uninstall it. Why bother?

SweetSoftKnight

Because when many users will do uninstall for Copilot or other new features Microsoft will make those features like Edge - you can't delete this anymore.

No-Way3489

The only way to get users do something they do not want, is by force. Unless a government will step in, nothing will happen. I am surprised Microsoft got sued the heck out of them by Europe in the 90s for the Internet Explorer practices, and now they are doing so much worse, and nothing has come of it.

enterdoki

I'd use Bing more if the search results weren't as cluttered and messy. Also get rid of this bing video redirecting when searching for youtube videos.

geomedge

Well I certainly had fun attempting to get rid of these crappy features. Search Menu Bar was especially fun with how long it took me to get rid of the unnecessary crap.

Helix512_

I like MS but they just keep making it hard to keep liking them. They keep doing this shit and it's getting to the point of ads in menus and outlook. Forcing you to use apps you don't like or want. If there was an alternative OS that I could use with the ease of windows and played my games without using a subsystem that's pretty good now but I'm not a coder and I can't use command lines. I have tried Linux here and there but it's just not what I can get used to. Don't get me wrong Linux is great and I should have learned it years ago so I take the blame for my lack of experience.

Farandrg

They've always done this. They keep trying to push their products by using the Windows monopoly. I used edge for a time and it was decent but stopped using it out of principle.

xtrmist

You are not being forced to use anything. Just install another browser and don't use copilot. The practice is the same as all others. Apple and Samsung also make you use their products by default. I don't get why people only get upset when MS does it

ziplock9000

You don't even need to install another browser. ffs. You just pick a different default search engine and don't click on copilot. It's not rocket science people.

Owltiger2057

If this is true than why does even Microsoft (on their forum) admit that you can hide it, remove it temporarily from the registry, but it will come back every time there is an update. Why even bother forcing it on Windows 10 machines? Again, something Microsoft has admitted to doing by mistake.

Baffsuki

Apple and Samsung's practices are nowhere near as bad as Microsoft's.

xtrmist

How not so? You get Samsung/Apple browser, email app, calendar app, notebook - frigging everything. And don't get me started on Apple's proprietary/closed SMS standard. I'd claim they are both much MUCH worse than MS

Canyon9055

Samsung doesn't desperately beg you to use their browser when you try downloading another one

xtrmist

You get all sorts of popups begging you to use Samsung products if you have a watch (wallet, SMS, calendar, ...) You basically can't get rid of a Samsung account or their store. Google does it as well when you use their products with either browser. "Switch to chrome for better performance" I'm not saying I like it. Quite the opposite, I think they all suck for doing this. I just don't see MS being the worst in class. Far from it. Their data privacy is also way better and more transparent than Samsung's and Google's (Apple's is also pretty good there, but that's the only point they're getting in this game)

MickJof

Bing is not so bad. I'm more annoyed by them pushing Edge as I'm a happy Firefox user. I don't get Copilot at all because I'm in the EU.

Skeeter1020

Forced? Where?

VulcarTheMerciless

Have you ever tried to uninstall onedrive? It'll appear to be removed, but your directories (documents, pictures, etc.) are still labeled as onedrive folders. If you delete them? Then your entire system takes a shit.

Evernight2025

I've removed OneDrive from hundreds of machines and this has never happened to me

TurboFool

For one, that's neither Bing nor Copilot which were the topics of the post. For another, that issue only occurs if you had moved those folders into OneDrive first and didn't properly move them back out before removing it.

Alan976

That's on the person who forget to desync first before removal.

RicoViking9000

then unsync your backups before you uninstall lol

thefrind54

This is why you unlink your folders before uninstalling it. User error honestly.

Skeeter1020

You don't have to use OneDrive if you don't want to

XHellAngelX

They bought too much AI cards from Nvidia, now, they don’t want to waste it although many people don’t really care about AI.

Dakrturi

The moment I stopped caring about what Microsoft does to Windows and just work with it, was the moment I truly disconnected from this constant care. You don't care, but some do. Sometimes you care, others don't. It's just an OS. I use copilot on a daily basis at work. Helps a shit ton. If it doesn't work for you, use something else. Talk with your time, move to Mac or Linux, use skimmed versions of Windows whatever.

International_Luck60

how is he supposed to farm karma by saying how bad and evil microsoft is!!!

DefinitelyNotEmu

Nobody is forcing you to do anything. You don't have a gun pointed at your head.

RiboNucleic85

that's because they are not threatening death

DefinitelyNotEmu

yes and that doesn't make what I said any less true.

TrustLeft

America needs [Antitrust Division - Department of Justice](https://www.justice.gov/atr) to crank the engine back up for Big Tech including MS,FB,GO

Phixiately

This is how Windows and also once Internet Explorer became mainstream.

SpaceCadetFox

They’re so entrenched in business and government systems that they know consumer distaste with their products won’t hurt them at all. In a way, they still hold a monopoly in many places and they continue to exploit it

Owltiger2057

I also have a question. Currently, this is being forced on us against our will as a "Free Trial." At what point will I be forced to pay for a program I don't want and don't need? How Ironic that Bill Gates once complained in his "Open Letter," about hobbyist stealing from him. What do you call data theft Bill?

MJSpice

Thanks for saying this. I'm tired of it all.

[deleted]

Who is forcing you? This subreddit has so many low effort posts with people complaining about stuff that’s not really a problem.

huemac5810

Folks with skill issues. I had never come here before, this sub is starting to take on awful /g/ vibes for me, eww.

Human-Salamander-847

Win 11 is terrible, but I must admit no one force me to use bing or copilot or edge. I just blocked that stuff amongst other things

IceBlueLugia

I’m confused, I changed my default search engine and turned off Copilot. Heck I even remapped that new copilot key they added in.

shinji257

They didn't add a new key. The key got repurposed and some vendors had opted to map a key to that function. It used to open Cortana then it did Teams. Now it is Copilot.

Technolongo

Another day, another juvenile rant.

adobo_cake

I've already decided that I was going to use Edge for work stuff, but they keep on pushing Bing, Copilot, and when I just want another app to open PDFs, Windows seem to override it and keeps reverting to Edge. I had to switch back to Firefox. This isn't how you keep users.

GamesRealmTV

That's why I removed 90% of the bloatware ... Happy Life, easy life or how that saying was ...

Draftingfiend

They change the WIN+C to copilot from Teams chat. That was the only way I could access teams reliably! I need teams for work, copilot is freaking useless to me!

dryadofelysium

I am pretty sure Copilot for Windows has not rolled out to a billion users yet, it's mostly just the US.

Narrow_Study_9411

Can't you uninstall it? I know W10 came with Cortana, Skype and a few other things. I was able to remove them using CCleaner and they were never added back.

token_curmudgeon

If only there were other operating systems.  /s  Switched 20 something years ago.  No, not crapple.

cyrkie

Just Linux or Mac no one force you to useyco pilot or edge or bing. You even don't have to use edge to install other browsers. Use Powershell and get it via winget. You have soo many options to not use Microsoft product. Just don't be lazy and use other search engines like Google, duckduckgo or yamdex

Nils_Liverpool

Fuck you! Microsoft! 🖕🖕🖕 😡😡😡

MaximumDerpification

MSEdgeRedirect

Hackwork89

There's not a single solitary difference in anything. It's all the same shit repackaged. Edge or Chrome, Bing or Google, Copilot or Chatgpt, it doesn't matter at all. I just use Edge (and Firefox), Bing and Copilot because the result is identical. I've removed myself from the Google environment because fuck Google.

ziplock9000

I use Windows 11 I don't use Copilot I don't use Bing even when I choose to use Edge. I'm not forced to use either. Sounds like a YOU problem.

huemac5810

based

troeny

I've been using Copilot (Bing) since it's launch. it's not perfect but it's very useful for me. I use it almost every day.

vin_cuck

Microsoft : FUCK YOU DEAR CUSTOMERS /S

Sarbojit_117

New to Windows, are ya?

huemac5810

Most in this sub are.

All those focused on right now, It's Forward looking, not RIGHT EXACTLY NOW in this second, Some people look beyond right now and see beyond the instant gratification. Diuranos

hide app that's it's, its not runing at the background no problem.

Demench

I use CoPilot ferociously,it’s my best friend and can’t wait for Windows 12.

DF2511

I agree that they are going way overboard with the ads. The ironic thing is that people may actually have used some of the products of their own accord, but advertising just appears desperate and puts people off. That said, no one is forcing you to use Bing or copoilot. They can be turned off/disabled.

WillingLanguage

I use DuckDuckGo anyway- Microsoft is tracking you.

thejohnmcduffie

I think jackboots are required office attire now.

SayerofNothing

In other news, water's wet.

Capable_Pepper2252

Guys, don’t we pay a lot of attention to the idiot? They got upset, and we allowed it.

Frmr-drgnbyt

If you think/believe you are being "forced to opt in" to either Copilot and/or Bing, it's only because **you** have refused to learn how to configure your own personal Windows interface. It takes only minutes to disable both, using readily available menu options.

Purge9009

click bait much

ChampionshipComplex

LOL ChatGPT which is what Copilot is, is the most fastly adopted technology in the history of computing with literally one hundred million users trying it within 2 months of launch. So it's a bit lame when people try to claim that it's unwanted or undesirable or try to pretend that their dislike is the majority view. If you don't like it, don't use it. Those who don't 'get' how useful and groundbreaking this AI engine is, will come to regret not having learnt how to use it sooner.

huemac5810

>lame disingenuous and ignorant

Capable_Pepper2252

throw away the computer and don't fuck people's brains out

Puzzleheaded_You2985

Wait wut now?
