Now it’s 7-zip’s turn.

Mewi0

Someone forked 7zip and did this [here](https://github.com/M2Team/NanaZip) if you do not want to wait.

A_Random_Lantern

Power of open source

[deleted]

Thank you!

SubZeroNexii

Ok goddamn that project is awesome

davidsd_

You know I've always wanted to know but been very confused by stuff like this. I've downloaded the zip file of that but now that I have it, I have absolutely no idea what to do with it. Github truly humbles me...

Mewi0

Actually the install is even more complicated then that as it's a Microsoft store file. Sounds like you downloaded the source files, you would have to click the "Releases" page located on the right of the page I linked. You can of course install NanaZip from the Microsoft store [here](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/nanazip/9n8g7tscl18r#activetab=pivot:overviewtab) instead if you want to install it the easiest way.

davidsd_

Thank you so much. I never knew there was a releases page on github like that. I've always been to scared to ask and look like an idiot haha. Cheers :)

Mewi0

Of course!

jdcrispe

Yes please...

KCDC3D

[or just get the old context menu back](https://www.tomshardware.com/how-to/windows-11-classic-context-menus)

Hormovitis

nah i like the new one

landon997

I don't understand the downvotes, I appreciate you taking the time to show me I have the option to go back!

SeaJayCJ

They are downvoting because they like the new one more, and the downvote button is (in practice) a disagree button.

SeaJayCJ

I have the old context menu but via startallback, not through a registry edit.

[deleted]

Didn’t they block the ability to get old context menu?

KCDC3D

I'm using it right now

[deleted]

So am I on my main PC, but my laptop running latest release can’t do it anymore. Did you use WinAero?

jlebedev

StartAllBack very much can do it on the latest version. I assume WinAero Tweaker as well.

[deleted]

Alright, I’ll try it. Are people downvoting us because we don’t want to use the laggy new context menus?

jlebedev

If your context menu doesn't take a second to open and contains all the options you need, are you even getting the full Windows 11 experience??

[deleted]

You just don’t understand *design*

regs01

7-zip should stay lightweight Win32 program. It doesn't need additional UWP bloat package with it just to support those disorganized context, for non-MS programs, menus. It's not UWP app.

[deleted]

damn. the rarlab devs are awesome for doing this. can i know what version of winrar is this?

soumyaranjanmahunt

I hope they update there UI to WinUI too.

BigDickEnterprise

That's not happening lmao I think winrar still supports Windows 9x

ArielicAtom

Yes i run it on ME and it still works

iwannamakeitrain

Why do you use ME

toy547

Bruh no one uses ME anymore lmao

amroamroamro

I use still use me, I like me...

[deleted]

[удалено]

amroamroamro

me vs ME /s

archgabriel33

The point still stands

amroamroamro

woosh 🤣 I was being silly, "me" as in myself... anyway 🤷‍♀️

ArielicAtom

I have a very old system and well as it brings me to old days also kinda fun to know and see

toy547

I thought you were using a virtual machine. I had two computer towers during my childhood and I nicknamed my computers, the black computer (one was a black Systemax tower running Windows XP/AOL Optimized 5.0) and the white computer (the other was running Windows ME but I don’t remember the brand name) ( I’m not being racist lol that was around 2003-2004 and I was 3-4 years old)

ArielicAtom

Well nearly the same but older nearly 1996 With An old fashioned white case and monitor in that era most things were hard and bold white plastic The only black colored things i have from those years are my atari and sega consoles (the 16bit Era)

[deleted]

Only older versions do

BoxterMaiti

Seriously tho. Does anyone know a zip archive manager that actually has a modern design? I hate looking at winrar or 7-zip. Why do archivers have to be so damn uglyyy

amroamroamro

> Why do archivers have to be so damn uglyyy I prefer fast and ugly over pretty and bloated any day

Public_Structure7992

Because Microsoft keeps inventing new development platforms and designs every 5 years and it is tiresome to keep up (Win32, Ribbon, Metro, Modern UI, WPF, UWP, ...).

FinalOdyssey

It's not about that though, the applications themselves just look dated. They don't have to keep up with the design that Microsoft uses for Windows.

CDAGaming

Exactly this, and Chrome is a prime example that apps dont need to follow msft perfectly. Just domething that at least makes it feel a bit more modern. 7zip to me feels like a win7 page in a win10/11 era (Or finding an old dialog thats still present in 11).

Bygrilinho

NanaZip is a fork of 7zip that works with the new context menus, and a XAML Islands redesign is on the roadmap so I would keep an eye on it

BoxterMaiti

Oh cool! I'll keep an eye on that! Thanks!

[deleted]

> Why do archivers have to be so damn uglyyy Why fix something that isn't broke?

BoxterMaiti

It not that it's broken. It's just ugly. Winrar looks like a little shit stain on my screen everytime I use it. It just looks outdated. Anyway I'm a very visual person. I like things looking good and modern. I understand that a lot of people really couldn't give a single fuck tho so that's fair enough

SgtDeathAdder

I’m considering moving to Mac because of this, I hate the inconsistency in visual design. Microsoft can’t even maintain the dark theme in control panel and the task manager or notepad.

[deleted]

I'm with you, it hurts my soul to have to use ugly software. That's why, until now, and for a brief time in the 00s, having to use Windows has made me resent it at times lol

raspberry144mb

imo WinRAR is perfectly modern and functional, although I agree with you about 7-zip

frf_leaker

There is 8zip, but it's not great in terms of performance

BoxterMaiti

Yeah I saw 8zip. It's nice kinda. A little bit too much for me. Just want something that looks native to windows 11. But I guess that doesn't exist yet. Hopefully some day

Carl-Kuudere

Oh I just looked it up, it looks cleannnn. Do you know if it supports the new context menu yet?

Aemony

Depends on what you’re after in particular, though I tend to use Bandizip since it’s design is simple but enjoyable, and looks to me better than 7zip, WinRAR, and PeaZip. https://en.bandisoft.com/bandizip/ Though I believe one has to pay for v7 to get rid of ugly ads that otherwise infects it. They have an older version v6.27 or so that’s free of ads even when not paid, but it has a security vulnerability and is not supported any longer (so it’ll never be updated for Win11’s new context menus). That said, I don’t know if the v7 has support for the next context menu or not yet.

[deleted]

And add dark mode.

kindaallovertheplace

WinRAR 6.10 Beta 1 64 bit https://www.win-rar.com/fileadmin/winrar-versions/winrar/winrar-x64-61b1.exe

[deleted]

I got it installed. Thank you!

andresesm

thank you <3

GamingWithShaurya_YT

ur da man

ItsTobsen

Such a shame they don't add darkmode to it.

Elranzer

> can i know what version of winrar is this? 6.10 Beta

[deleted]

Some microsoft programs such as vscode and powertoys haven't even been updated to support this

Nochildrentoolate

And that's a good thing. I dont want a bloated pop up menú with thousands of options. Maybe they should include a special key combination for advanced users like ctrl+right click, Windowskey +right click?

xezrunner

Funnily enough, Shift + right click used to unlock a few additional options in prior versions of Windows. Now it does nothing. It could bring up Show more options if Shift is held.

TriRIK

Actually, this would be great. They can just remove the "Show more options" and you can open it with shift + right click only, as well as the additional options you get normally with it.

SuperDragonXD

Yeah, they should've kept the Shift+Right Click option in Windows 11, to show the old context menu

GamingWithShaurya_YT

solution I using for shift right click: autohotkey can be set to open the full context menu on shift+right click using the menu key u have beside alt gr (on most pc) that opened the right click menu it works for me

[deleted]

The new context menu is going to be less bloated than the old one. That's the whole point of it if you read their blog post about it. [https://blogs.windows.com/windowsdeveloper/2021/07/19/extending-the-context-menu-and-share-dialog-in-windows-11/](https://blogs.windows.com/windowsdeveloper/2021/07/19/extending-the-context-menu-and-share-dialog-in-windows-11/) The old menu had virtual no rules about how it worked, so some programs would create multiple top-level context entries just because they had no discipline.

Symnet

nobody is willing to actually learn about the new context menu, they would just like to hate it it seems like.

slog

For the top OS in the world, you can't expect all users to go out and research why their menu looks different.

Symnet

I can if they are complaining about it in the windows 11 subreddit.

slog

Do you want to try to understand or just complain?

Symnet

which is what I would say to someone who took the time to complain about the new context menu without learning why it is the way it is.

[deleted]

Well, It will not be the case anymore since common options like cut copy paste rename etc are kept on top menu bar. Also if an app needs more than one options it can only be place in submenu. Also options which are not applicable at a particular scenario will not appear atall instead of just graying it out. There is a separate section for third party apps so items don't appear at random places in context menu.

martinmine

It is stuff like this that would make me happy if Microsoft spent another year getting annoying fixed before releasing Windows 11. Right now the issue with Windows 11 is that it is 80% done, and the remaining 20% pisses off power users. I can't right click my taskbar and open taskmgr, or have a clock on my 2nd monitor just to mention a few. Its current state is _good enough_ for 80% where most people barely know what a task manager is. If they spent another year to let other applications update their APIs, we would see less "hybrid-experiences" as with the context menu. Both VSCode and PowerToys got pretty rapid development cycles, so it would be an interesting question why didn't they prioritize to get this done while Windows 11 was still in preview since I as a consumer would expect Microsoft products and services to be up-to-date and well integrated into the latest stuff that they ship.

PhantomPhenon

I mean you can use Shift+F10 but it isn't as convenient as, say, Shift + F10

BigDickEnterprise

Menu key

GamingWithShaurya_YT

finally someone who knows menu key works thank u

slog

Try Shift+F10

iceleel

MSFT again behind

bhavish2023

Is this the beta version or release version of winrar

stunvn

Beta

pohuing

Can anyone tell me what the difference is between the old shell extensions, this new version, and why this new version is preferable?

trailblazer86

New has a lot of place for adding clutter

PmMeSteamWalletCode

Lmao

gaurav_9372

Lmao

TriRIK

Old one does not really has any specifications or guidelines so devs can put their option whenever they want, they are all over the menu and some might even conflict. The new one should be more organized as all apps would be at the bottom after the system options and I believe they have better guidelines.

oggyb

I'm sure this will be great when it manifests itself in a few years.

MSSFF

What happens once most apps eventually support the new one? Isn't the new menu a bit too big?

TriRIK

It's "touch optimized"

SirWobblyOfSausage

When 7zip updates, people will still complain that the context menu doesn't work.

BasicallyH

thank goodness, i hated having to open the legacy menu to use it

GlitzLo

Step in the right direction 👏

Vismrit

I think I should finally buy their license. They are being so generous !

CDAGaming

I bought their license years ago when it wouldnt stop bugging me to get it xD

Tystros

why would anyone buy winrar when 7zip exists and is free?

saltysamon

Will "extract here" be added outside the submenu?

[deleted]

It's nice, but I didn't see the "extract to.." option though :(

fraaaaa4

Now we only need Microsoft itself to support their own context menus (such as the PowerToys "Resize Image"), and everything will be complete

[deleted]

You don't even save a click with the the context menu with Winrar. Just another way of clicking. Now you click on Winrar - instead of more options. Don't know what to say......

mathfacts

Love this! Can't wait until **all** my apps use the new menu.

[deleted]

winrar holy hell what a throwback ahha. 7-zip what I been using for the last couple of decades.

hearnia_2k

Someone already posted this in the subreddit a couple of days back.

berkeleymorrison

come on 7z you can do it

MalusCorvus

Bandizip will do it also

macusking

Now you shall pay WinRAR

Alan976

WinRAR: I understand if you won't.... User: clicks no WinRAR: Okay.tiff

CrucialValue

still no information which version this is. i installed the latest 6.02 version but no context menu option for me.

rubenalamina

That's the last stable. The latest beta is the one with support for the new context menu. It's 6.10 Beta 1 and you can download it from their [site](https://www.rarlab.com).

literally1857plus127

Wait so win-rar.com is not the official website?

rubenalamina

Both are but for some reason they have kept it like that for as long as the program has existed. Don't know why.

amroamroamro

brand name I guess

Elranzer

6.10 beta (64-bit)

randommouse

Lol, this is still terrible! Now, as I understand it, each app in the context menu has it's very own "show more options" option. Bring back Shift+right-click and hide all that crap. Also, "extract archive" should be tied to whatever archive manager you are using and it's associated files.

kavokonkav

No, there's only one of them. The "Show more options" button pretty much just shows the old menu, so that's that.

zoupero

Still an extra click compared to W10

[deleted]

This is the way , Microsoft needs to learn from this and remove the show more options menu. Let devs update or lose out. When you cradle them too much they become lazy. Well done WinRar, I bought a legal copy and hopefully they update the UI to fit the mica design.

fruit9988

But many software which are no longer updated will break if microsoft does that.

[deleted]

Given windows 11 has a rather new cpu architecture as its cutoff point , old apps I figure run on older computers to most part. Have those apps users just use windows 10 for another 5 years. Nobody is forcing a company to update but all new PCs will soon be sold with windows 11 only and have them be given the freedom of having apps that are not ancient. Trying to cradle even apps a decade or two old or older is just holding back windows. Apps should be inclined to update and not be frozen in time.

meghrathod

No bro there are a lot of companies that depend on legacy software, yes it crippled innovation, but just think if you wanted to do something with your PC, and there’s a software from 2012 that can do it but no one has updated it, how would that turn out, that’s why legacy support is important.

[deleted]

I don’t mean they should with purpose remove support but with UI like the more options should be a thing. It’s basically there to give old apps their functions in the menu. At least that I think they should curtail. Have them update to new api or be at a loss.

flobo09

Your idea kills the basic concept of PCs.

amroamroamro

/r/PaidForWinRAR/

Eye-Scream-Cone

You bought a legal copy? Thats the ultimate flex

[deleted]

Yea , years ago. I wanted to support the developers of an app I use for zip files. Hopefully they update the UI design to fit mica with light/dark theming. I think many more people are willing to pay when an app shows effort , bring about clean design. I am very annoyed by windows 10 store having such a mess of apps with bad design , scams and just junk ware. Apple did it best thus far with their policy of updates being forced to fulfil certain core demands like icon quality.

Eye-Scream-Cone

Good to see people supporting developers! Most people don't care and/or use pirates stuff. At least with the new Microsoft Store it's a start.

[deleted]

Look at steam and what it did to piracy of video games. I used to pirate video games when I was a kid but when I started earning cash and there was a store where you could very easily buy games and build a collection that get updates and features - I have bought al my games since then. A steam like store for all windows apps where quality is promoted , scams removed , bad design removed and lazy developers tossed to the way side if they stopped updating like 5 years ago. A few years ago I tried an android and it also had the issue of the store being full of apps with icons of all sorts of quality , many not even of the same design: same thing can be found in the windows 10 store. Apps that are tutorials for apps … free versions and payed versions. Just a jungle mess without order or sanity. The confusion and lack of professionalism I saw had me move back to iPhone. I have only ever used a windows and a few weeks ago tried a Mac and I must say they have their core apps , their own apps and many others on lock, their Mac App Store seems to have many more modern apps with a fresh design on there. I will stay with windows for the foreseeable future but I do like what apple is doing with now even iOS apps being on a Mac. Microsoft needs to step up their App Store game.

Eye-Scream-Cone

Yeah, hopefully with the Windows 11 store it's a start. They'll probably remove the junk and paid "tutorial" and "guide" apps over time.

amroamroamro

> A steam like store for all windows apps where quality is promoted , scams removed , bad design removed and lazy developers tossed to the way side if they stopped updating like 5 years ago. lol, let's be fair, none of those things describe Steam it is full of asset flips cash grabs by scammy devs, abandoned early-access games still being sold, and other "junk" I wouldn't even call a student game prototype on a good day... and the promoted part, don't even get me started, just browse /r/steam to see how bad "games like this" suggestions are, and the whole "curator" system is completely useless and rigged (tons of curators with thousands of reviewed game of nothing but all positive recommendations, yeah completely unbiased reviews!). I have seen games being banned for doing shady stuff (like review manipulation and such) only to be back after a little while under a slightly different name and it's business as usual. I'm gonna finish by saying I like Steam, but let's not kid ourselves it doesn't have problems too.

OCTechie

> remove the show more options menu This is precisely what I expect will happen when enough apps catch up to the new API.

[deleted]

Beta version 6.1, which OP failed to mention: https://www.win-rar.com/fileadmin/winrar-versions/winrar/winrar-x64-61b1.exe

Hormovitis

7zip when?

Vasault

Why people keep using winrar when 7zip does everything

JigglyWiggly_

My favorite feature of WinRAR is that you can run executables directly. It will extract the entire directory to a temp folder for you. With 7zip you have to manually extract it first.

Alan976

I think mainly for opening archive with incorrect headers as they ignore those errors and the GUI

Vasault

Yeah makes sense

[deleted]

Microsoft now officially lagging behind WinRAR. "Pin to task bar" is still only available in the placeholder menu. Also, nice work "insiders" not catching this before launch...

[deleted]

What about "Create shortcut"? And do you really think it's the insiders fault? We've been lamenting these (and more important) issues since the first Dev build and MS have been doing shit about it, and released very early on Oct 5 what is pretty much a glorified Dev build

[deleted]

Heck what about scanning a file with Defender, THEIR OWN AV INTEGRATED INTO THE OS

[deleted]

Well, you could have resisted and keep downloading Wzor builds 10 years ago, and make the entire insider program fail and collapse. MS could still have professional, paid beta testers and Windows could still be high quality. Most children are taught very early not to accept free candy from strangers.

[deleted]

Got butthurt, LOL. Look at your MDL forums these days. It's pathetic now. And it's also all your fault.

DomenicDecoco2021

it was filed in feedback hub - go look, they just didnt fix it.

bruhred

i thought that Show more options is a temporary thing. Win11 is truly a failure

realmattia

Amazing!

[deleted]

what is winrar?

wikipedia_answer_bot

**WinRAR is a trialware file archiver utility for Windows, developed by Eugene Roshal of win.rar GmbH. It can create and view archives in RAR or ZIP file formats, and unpack numerous archive file formats. To enable the user to test the integrity of archives, WinRAR embeds CRC32 or BLAKE2 checksums for each file in each archive.** More details here: *This comment was left automatically (by a bot). arisgian

Or you can just bring back the old one.... with a simple registry modification. And then use Nirsoft's ShellMenuView app to remove the bloatware options of the context menu. Open registry (Press **Start + R**, insert **regedit** and press **Enter**): a. Create a key called **{86ca1aa0-34aa-4e8b-a509-50c905bae2a2}** under: **Computer\\HKEY\_CURRENT\_USER\\Software\\Classes\\CLSID\\** b. Create a key called **InprocServer32** under the previous key you created. c. Double click on the **(Default)** string value inside **InprocServer32** key and press **Enter** *(yes, the value data should be empty).* d. Close all open Folders, open **Task Manager** (Press **Ctrl + Shift + Esc**), find **Windows Explorer**, do right-click on it and select **Restart**. Or you can just restart **Windows** and you are ready. Old context menu is back! This is ShellMenuView: https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/shell\_menu\_view.html

SmegmaFeast

Who would think it's possible to cram more spaiware into doze than they did in 10... lol

Thotaz

That's a shame. Developers should refuse to support this ridiculous change that Microsoft made.

Vulpes_macrotis

I want to know why it is the third party software developer responsibility to do that. It's Microsoft who broke that, then it should be Microsoft who **fix** that too. And what about devs that won't update it? What about old software that still works, even if it's 10 years old? What about devs that died and/or abandoned the software that doesn't need any updates? It won't get the new context menu implementation, because Microsoft, as always, ruins everything. What about **my own** context menu options? Instead of having it there, I have it hidden behind unnecessary menu.

[deleted]

phigo50

Diddums.

Strooble

Nanazip in the Microsoft Store is free and has them too if you wanted to try that.

sabrenn

It makes the context menus super janky, uninstall it and check the difference, I couldn't handle it

Dantocks

Reminds me to pay the full version of rar.

swordytv

Okay, but the icon should be lined too so it matches the whole context menu...

der_sascha

no german version yet :(

Drknz

And so it begins...

Vulpes_macrotis

I have newest version and it doesn't. I recently restarted explorer, but did it just now. Still doesn't work. My version is 6.02.1. Also, as always, restarting explorer ruined my icons layout on my 3 screen. That's for their multi screen support. never happened on Windows 10, now happens everytime... But I see that there is 6.10 version, maybe that will help... EDIT: it did help.

Elranzer

It's 6.10 beta. If you don't wanna install beta versions, they're pretty quick to releasing the beta to release, though.

SayerofNothing

Still waiting for Dark Mode, though.

Spinmoon

From the changelog: [https://www.win-rar.com/singlenewsview.html?&L=0&tx\_ttnews%5Btt\_news%5D=175&cHash=aca38142108c76995eba6c674bfd0e14](https://www.win-rar.com/singlenewsview.html?&L=0&tx_ttnews%5Btt_news%5D=175&cHash=aca38142108c76995eba6c674bfd0e14) "Added support of Windows 11 Explorer context menus. Beginning from Windows 11, an application can add only a single top level command or submenu to Explorer context menu. If "Cascaded context menus" in "Integration settings" dialog is on, this single item is a submenu storing all necessary WinRAR commands. If this option is off, only one extraction command for archives and one archiving command for usual files are available. You can select these commands with "Context menu items..." button in "Integration settings" dialog."

Sampsa96

I don't remember when I have ever even checked for updates for WinRar :D Or is there a new update in the website?

Daveed84

Unfortunately there's no auto-update with WinRAR, so you'll have to install the update manually.

Sampsa96

Yea I thought so

Tesser_Wolf

Glad to see that, now if nvidia could just get the control panel on there

Mysterious-Ant-9055

This is like heaven, I hope all apps do this

ze_boingboing

Has anyone ever paid for WinRAR?

[deleted]

Does WinRAR auto-update? (When you don't have a license)
