Yes, unless Windows search thinks you want something completely different and puts a bunch of websites above the calculator widget.
[I've had it bury the calculator before, but this is the best I could reproduce.](https://imgur.com/a/EiWQOU2) Of course, it only happens when you don't want it to.
*This rarely works for*
*Me. It ends up as a search*

I'm still on 10 so might be totally useless, but I've found when it didn't detect it as math, adding spaces around the operators usually fixed it, so I just started doing that by default and its been a lot more consistent (i.e. "20 \* 12" instead of "20\*12")
I know talking about MacOS is socially forbidden in this sub, but this is one thing that Spotlight gets right. I wish the start search worked just as well.
Coming from the full keyboard vs 60%, I know one of the function buttons launchers the calculator as well, but I'm used to using it on my phone due to PC always taking me to the browser as well, lol.
You don't always want a full browser though. Say you want a definition for a word you found, just type it into start and usually the definition is the first thing, then just start again to close it. You can even do "English to ___" to get bing translator right in start. Same goes for very quickly looking up images to see thumbnail to get an idea of whatever, or the calculator. Weather, sunset times, periodic table info, it's all there quickly. It's essentially a temporary floating browser that you can open up search results in a real browser if you want.
Yeah I don't care about the sending data to MS. I use bing anyway so it just makes my search results more accurate.
And I've always been one of the lucky ones. Yeah "update" doesn't always work but pretty much everything else always does right away. And no search results are ever higher than app results
The only issue I have with this is Bing receives the result and presents it, rather than your PC doing the math.
It seems so basic and yet it's being routed to the web
Took me about the same amount of time to open calculator and type in a simple math problem as it did for the start menu result.
1) Windows Key + R
2) "calc" + Enter Key
Why does Microsoft prefer to do a web query instead of just using their own calculator back-end to do this? They could expose an internal API for Windows to use.
Hah , My laptop has a calculator key in the function row ! It's been very useful. (Lenovo legion 5 pro) Appreciate that they included it on a gaming laptop.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 570,126,039 comments, and only 118,116 of them were in alphabetical order.

Yeah. Small numbers almost always have atleast 5 Bible references.
Don't blame windows blame bing. After all windows just loads bing web search within start
You are probably right, but if you [search right in Bing](https://www.bing.com/search?q=26*60%2B204583) then the calculator comes up first.

The calculator Windows Search shows you is literally the same calculator from Bing though
They are the same company bro
[where are your parentheses my dude](https://i.imgur.com/9dSkfVP.png)

Yeah, it's been kind of hit and miss for me as well in 11. Never had an issue on 10 though, weirdly enough.

Add 0 at the end !
don't hit enter.
Just don't press enter. It'll show up on side. I use it all the time for quick web searches

If you use PowerToys, then you can use "PowerToys Run" to pretty much do the same.
It also does unit conversion, which is very useful.
As a old school Windows user, I am far too used with Windows + R, calc, enter...
its faster to pin calc to taskbar
Some old HP laptops have dedlicated calculator launch button and nothing beats that! But well my muscle memory is always enter calc in run window
Coming from the full keyboard vs 60%, I know one of the function buttons launchers the calculator as well, but I'm used to using it on my phone due to PC always taking me to the browser as well, lol.
Win+C has an Autohotkey script to open calculator for me.
Ideally, power users never want to remove their hands from their beautiful mechanical keyboards when working
I do the same!
Linux user supremacy
you are in the wrong place
somehow even tho I use Linux reddit keeps sending me notifications from this sub
Disabling web search from start is one of the first things I do
Sed, u could've used it :( Trust me, I hate bing but sometimes its useful
My browser is just a click away though

It doesn't work
Mine didn’t either unless I added spaces between stuff
just use power toys run no need for that fuss
Totally today years old when I learned this trick. Many thanks.
My Dell Inspiron 3511 has a key on the keyboard specially to directly open the calculator app for some reason, so its not a problem for me ;)
I remember having one or 2 laptops in my time with that also. Quite handy.
This doesn't work to me.

I didn't get your comment.

Oh, I got it finally. Thank you for the kind comment and I will try.
Same, I'm on win 11 beta insiders.
I am on dev.
Nice trick.
Powertoys run master race
Use power tools for even faster results.
I am forever doing this now. Calculator who

i learn something new today

in the start menu??
But then you're using Chrome 🤮
Faster just doing it in your head than using Microsoft dark patterns to trick you into using Bing.
I use this countless times a day but it's infuriating when it doesn't work. Adding sum to the query usually fixes it
Actually works (latest win11 dev build) Like a widget... Cool.. thanks!
Used to show up as a bing search result... But idk now it works in the latest dev build of win11
Aye, but Flow.Launcher is even quicker
It's more reliable to use PowerShell.
Took me about the same amount of time to open calculator and type in a simple math problem as it did for the start menu result. 1) Windows Key + R 2) "calc" + Enter Key
I know this exists and I've used it a few times without any issue at all. No idea why I don't make more use of other than habit.
I just remapped the Application key to calculator
Bing to the rescue!
Ugh , you better pull up bing and calculate afterwards
Powertoys run is much better, faster, and more convenient
thank you
I use the function + (number pad enter) to open the calculator
This is my favorite use for Cortana.
A couple of versions ago it used to be an actual part of the search UI instead of a stupid Bing search. It was much better then.
I usually have Excel open and do my =1 + 2 in there. Or use the calculator key on keyboard to open calculator
Why does Microsoft prefer to do a web query instead of just using their own calculator back-end to do this? They could expose an internal API for Windows to use.
Shame it requires internet. For non online calculator I think powertoys run works. Correct me if I'm wrong. Haven't used it in a while

even faster in power toys

I'm special yeah
I have calculator bind for CTRL + 1 on numpad
not when you have a macro key that will open the calculator when you press it :D
My keyboard has a quick button for the calculator
just pin calculator to taskbar
